Best practices in VMWare ESXi 3.5 installation and deployment of VMDK u3?

Hi all

I'm about to implement virtualization on my business technology

I've got these resources to be used by VMWare ESXi 3.5

Dell PowerEDGE 2950 III

  • 32 GB DDR - II 667 MHz

  • internal 4 x 500 GB SATA 7200 RPM HDD (RAID 5) - I know that it's slow to host the VMDK

  • Internal USB slot on the motherboard (but not USB flashdisk?)

Dell PowerVault MD3000

  • 10 x 300 GB SAS 15 k RPM

  • 2 x Dual port Gigabit Ethernet NIC (x 4 in total)

  • iSCSI - 2 x Gigabit Ethernet for the switch (mute not to VLAN)

I wonder where I should install the VMWare ESXi? for the VMDK, I believe that the deployment in the SAN is the right place.

and any suggestion for the use of the SATA HARD drive internal?

any comments would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

You mean Deployment.jpg diagram?

In this case, there is an error.

You need a network 2, not 4.

Each controller and each NIC (on ESX) must have an IP in a net and another IP in the second NET.

ESX guests 4 targets, 2 in a net, 2 in the other.

no doubt this question has been answered not once... Sorry

I would like to know the best practice for the storage of the vm and its virtual hard disk to a SAN.

Any show advantage does make sense to keep them on separate LUNS?

    Thank you.

It will really depend on the application of the virtual machine - but for most of the applications no problem by storing everything on the same data store

  • VMware ESXi freezes during installation

I have problems to install VMware ESXi on a HP dl380 g3. Accessing the server using its iLO interface. I boot from the cd and choose Setup ESXi. Then, it load the following modules (vmkboot.gz, vmkernel.gz, sys.vgz, cim.vgz, ienviron.tgz, image.tgz, install.tgz). After that, he said "Booting MBI = 0x000100d8, entry = 0 x 00100212" and freezes. By freezes, I mean that my keyboard is blocked so I can't even disable caps lock on or off. I let it sit for 10 min and she still fails. I tested the cd trying to install it on a virtual machine, and it seemed to work fine. So, it doesn't seem to be a problem with the disc.

Any ideas on what could be the problem?

    Thank you

The processors listed don't look like 64-bit processors. I couldn't find a solution for this kind of material. My workaround, however, is to simply continue using ESXi 3.5 on these and ESXi 4 on more recent/64-bit servers.

  • What are the best practices for creating only time data types, and not the Date

    Hi gurus,

We use 12 c DB and we have a requirement to create the column with datatype of time only, if someone please describe what are the best practices for the creation of this.

I would strongly appreciate ideas and suggestions.

    Kind regards
    Ranjan

    Hello

How do you intend to use the time?

If you are going to combine with DATEs or timestamps from a other source, then an INTERVAL DAY TO SECOND or NUMBER may be better.

Will you need to perform arithmetic operations on time, for example, increase the time to 20%, or take an average?   If so, the NUMBER would be preferable.

You are just going to display it?  In this case, DAY INTERVAL in SECONDS, DATE or VARCHAR2 would work.

    As Blushadow said, it depends.

  • VMware ESXi 4.1.0 and snapshot problem - no disk space

    Hi all

We now have a big problem with our free space on the disk. We are using VMware vSphere (vSphere Client ver 4.1.0 and VMware ESXi ver 4.1.0):

Our vm has 2 HDD (500 GB, 1 TB). Now we have only 20 GB of free disk 1 and several snapshot files. To remove the snapshot, we need more than 20 GB of free space (corect?). What we need to do more free space? We can move snapshot files from the first disk to the second disk?

    vmware_1.png

    snapshot.png

    Thanks for any help

    concerning

    Dragan

First of all, you can redirect your new snapshot on another store/disk as explained in this article "http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1002929".

Secondo, you can delete snapshot older and smaller but not all together as explained in this article by Duncan Epping "http://www.yellow-bricks.com/2008/01/07/delete-all-snapshots/."

  • Can I install the vmware tools on a HP Proliant 380 G5 with VMware ESXi 3.5 Installable U3 with HP management components?

    Hello, I have install ESXi 3.5 U3 on a Hp Proliant 380.

I have created a virtual machine to Windows 2003, and when I want to install VMWARE TOOLS from Vmware Infrastructure Client, it does not install on the virtual machine vmware tools. Nor has received all messages from a Client Infrastructure and neither of the virtual machine.

    Why could this happen?

    Thanks in advance

    NO.

The installation of vmware tools lies in an iso file, which is located on your host ESX itself and is mounted on the virtual machine when you click "install vmware tools".

Weather or not your host has a cdrom drive is not serious, you can always add a virtual cdrom drive to your guests and use iso files, or the cdrom drive on the PC that you are using the VI client from.

If you vm doesn't have a virtual cdrom drive, it can't mount the vmware tools iso, and you cannot install the vmware tools.

  • VMware ESXi 5.1 Installation repair

I have a 5.1 host that does not load. I'm trying to find how to fix the esxi installation 5.1. When I boot to the iso installation that was used, I'd expect a repair option.

    Hello

You do not have an option of repair on ESXi. Once you start with Installation ISO. continue upwards and on the next screen, promt, you will be prompted with a startup message

found the existing VMFS partition found. you want to keep the partition, select Yes.

If you have the host as disconnected or no answer yet on the vCenter server take a screenshot of your host-network--.configuration guts to networking. You will lose

network config and the need to recreate the same. But you can save your data from VMFS partition.

  • Best practices of Vmware with Vstorage

    Hello

I'm under the process of implimenting a virtulized with HP EVA CF based storage environment.

The Setup program that would be two esx/esxi hosts would be linking EVA 4400 and connect via FC HBAS on each host.

We have enteprrise licnese with us as well as the Cisco nexus switches. I'm uncomfortable with the configuration of the Nexus.

    Need expert advice on a few quick questions;

    1. should I keep the VM on a storage shared for vmotion etc. Yes, I think so.

    2. how to get EVA configured for optimal performance. There will be 4 VM running on each host ESX/ESXI.

    3. should there be separated by machine VM LUN on by hostor how this work.

    4. do I need to use the grouping of NETWORK cards that I don't have two NICS for each host.

    5. I don't have an idea on RDM. It's worth should be used? Under what scenarios it is used and what not?

    Kind regards

    Sushil

A quick google search returns the following doc, am sure that there are quite a few other resources that model-specific maybe you use:

    http://h20195.www2.HP.com/v2/GetPDF.aspx/4AA3-3801ENW.PDF

BTW, yes the for loop will change the default psp for all the LUNS online. As I said, changing the default psp to your HOME will do as well, but requires a reboot...

    Good luck!

  • Best practices for the use of the DPS and cloud logins creative?

    Hi-

I did have a chance to respond to my question via Google... If there was a previous topic posted on the forum about it, my apologies.

We users of DPS Pro for several years now, and in the early stages of the evolution of our software to cloud creative teams. We always use the Pro DPS account to produce a monthly magazine for iPads, Android and Amazon devices, but I'm trying to understand how our connection CC and 3 different connections rendition DPS will play together.

Right now, we're on CS5.5, so when we publish to different renditions, we record and off the Folio Builder when we need to access each account:

    [email protected]

    [email protected]

    [email protected]

Once we move to CC, I'll be connected to this account (for me, there [email protected])-who is also mentioned as having access administrator and DPS App Builder in the dashboard of the Administration of our account Pro DPS. DPS account

Is there a way to get my CC/DPS [email protected] connection to allow me to create renditions in the three accounts - magazine, magazine_droid, magazine_amazon - or I have to log in and out of the Folio Builder in InDesign CC to create these "renditions", as we do in CS5.5?

And if it affects my CC updates somehow to log in and out of all these accounts?

Thank you in advance for your help!

    Kristina

Your journal in the constructor of folio and your journal in CC are separated.

  • OBIEE installation and deployment on AIX

    Hi Experts,

I installed OBIEE 10.1.3.4 on IBM AIX 5.3 (full installation with oc4j). Now how can I deploy the application which had Windows, I could choose the url for the presentation of the services and send it to the customer by which he could access the respective areas. But in AIX, after completing the installation, I do not know how to proceed (may sound silly, but you please forgive me... new in OBIEE... :)))

    Help and advice needed!

    Thank you
    AK

The URL will be exactly the same as a Windows installation, but will have the name of your Unix server. You will need to learn how to start and stop services OBIEE and OC4J on Unix. It's pretty well documented on the Installation of the Infrastructure and the Configuration Guide.

  • Best practices of ESXi.

I'm trying to find out if I implement best practices correctly on ESXi 4.1 U1. Our facility has two on-board NICs and a quad card NETWORK to use for data and management networks. We have fiber for the side storage. If I understand the latest practices should I trunk 6-port then use port groups to manage traffic VLAN where going.

My question is this does not put excessive pressure on the network card that is used for the traffic of vmotion/vmkernel? If I put the switchport in one VLAN specific datagrams wouldn't get inspected and abandoned by the switch asics as opposed to the ESXi host to have to deal with them? I don't know if traffic would have a significant impact, so be it, but wanted to check before the implementation...

    Thank you
    Froggy

I guess that you are concerned about air on the ESXi host performance, because it must deal with VLAN tags.

Don't worry about this. The overhead is minimal and modern NICS also have material unloading of functions for VLAN that will be used by ESX in many cases of handling.

However, remember that you have no safe the uplinks on the physical switch! Just create a virtual switch and add all the rising physical their. ESXi them then use all function of the active/standby/unused attribute that you can set by group of virtual ports.

  • Best practices for vsphere 5.1

where can I find the doc more up-to-date about berries EQL configuration / best practices with vmware vsphere 5.1

    Hello

Here is a link to a PDF file that covers best practices for ESXi and EQL.

    Best EqualLogic practices ESX

    en.Community.Dell.com/.../20434601.aspx

This doc mentions specifically that the storage Heartbeat VMKernel port is no longer necessary with ESXi v5.1.  VMware has corrected the problem that made it necessary.

If you add it to a 5.1 system it will not hurt.  It will take an IP address for each node.

If you upgrade 5.0 to 5.1, you can delete it later.

Here is a link to VMware which addresses this issue and has links to other Dell documents which confirm also that it is fixed in 5.1.
