  Yes that's correct. The LR catalog must be on the computer's internal drive. Then when you have smart previews activated you can change the image without going through the reader that they are connected. When you connect this drive images will be updated.

  Simply COPY these 4 folders on your internal drive in a folder called Lightroom catalog that you create. Then open LR and go on the file menu point and select open catalog. Navigate to the folder you created called catalog in Lightroom and select the Lightroom Catalog.lrcat 5 file and click Open.
