  I also tried to uninstall the printer and found a driver for a HL-1230 for Vista 64-bit (I am running Windows 7 64-bit) and installed.  After I restarted the PC, I think it works.

  So I have now two separate "devices":

  -my HL-1030 masquerading as a HL-1230, defined as a printer, and

  -a 'controller', knows it is a HL-1030 but for which there no driver IEEE-1284.

  I think it's the HL-1230, that works, but it would be nice if I could get my hands on a HL-1030 pukka (64-bit) driver so that the computer could stop pretending.

  I dare not change anything at the moment where it stops working...

  Specs: Windows XP Home Edition version 2002, Service Pack 2. This is the version of XP OEM. Processor Intel pentium 4 2.00 GHz. 1.50 GB of ram.

  After an unknown incident (i suspect headphones usb), my wireless USB key has ceased to be recognized as such and become everything simply an "unknown device" under "USB bus controllers. Although windows tells me there is no drivers for the device installed, the wireless pen drive is signed with the Publisher of Microsoft Windows with a version of driver 5.1.2600.0, Microsoft being the driver provider.

  Compound number, the 802.11 device is listed under "Other devices" when 'show hidden devices' is selected and the variable "devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices" entered "environment variables", but is washed out-showing that the system thinks that the device is not currently connected to the computer.   3. Select the option to uninstall.
