  I'd be interested to see a report of Disk Defragmenter. Open Disk Defragmenter and click analysis. Select view report, and then click Save as and save. Now find VolumeC.txt in your My Documents folder.   Your description of what you did does not sense, so it is difficult to determine what are the things to the State in so it is difficult to give you advice on how to solve this problem.

  The lower pane should have a color bar (or bars) that indicates if the space is used as a partition primary, unallocated, etc..  You can see the colors associated with different types on the view > settings > appearance tab.  The lower pane should also indicate if the drive is "online".
