  It is a very old thread, but... in order to use all of your memory, you need to install a 64-bit version of Windows.   About 3.25 GB is the maximum that can be used by a 32-bit system.

The reason why I ask this is that I find a bit strange that my custom PC has a total of 8GBs of RAM but XP only can use a 2.96GBs total or 3GBs if I use one of my two video cards (currently using a GPU SLI configuration). So is one such update for XP or I'd be better off getting Win7 or Win8 when it comes out?

  one thing you might try is to search the whole file system (make sure to include also hidden sites) for the term bookmarks*.json - if all results appear with a date in the file name that is before installing windows, then you probably import them into your firefox profile.

  It's not easy to say why it happens. It is possible that there is something wrong with the HARD drive. The WinXP use Win98 FAT32 and NTFS. This is a problem.
  I recommend that you format the HARD drive completely before starting from the Win98 CD.
