  I am running Vista Home Premium

  I have a samsung spinpoint 250 GB laptop drive that goes wrong (already has bad sectors). I bought a WD 250 GB to replace. I used Acronis True Image to clone the drive... Apart from a few bad sectors I had to ignore. The cloning process has successfully completed.

  Now, when I start vista on the new drive. He tells me that I need to install a driver for the WD hard drive, although when I go to Device Manager... It is listed here in disk drives, and he says it works normally.

  When I try to run windows installs automatically the driver... he cannot find. If I try to manually Guide, he says he finds the driver encounters an error and cannot install it.

  I just wanted to give an update on how I solved the problem, if someone is facing questions that I had.

  In the end, the problem was that vista did not want that ALL drivers be isntalled... I tried usb drives etc. whenever I had the same problem... Windows could not find the drivers, or if I have it directed to the pilots, he would encounter an error and could not install.

  so, as a last ditch effort. I found this site that talked about the driver clear cache of vista... and they even provided a batch file that backs up and delete the cache driver for vista. and WHICH fixed my problem immediately. Once I ran the batch file. I managed to install the hard disk driver, USB drives, etc.

So I used a little program (productkey86.exe) out of the registry. So far so good. So I installed vista with this productkey but now my computer is telling me that I need to activate. When I try to activate microsoft says: impossible to activate the product.

  The problem is that the key on the lower side is an OEM license key and doesn t work with normal Vista installation diskettes. So that s the problem why you can t activate your Vista installation.

  You wrote that you have a Vista installation disc. Why you n t use the key that belongs to this disc? This would work ;)

  If the original HP recovery partition is intact then you should be able to create the recovery media.

  Before attempting to improve once again, use a hard drive of commerical known reliable product imaging in the image of your hard drive to external media.  This will save you a lot of time and effort, if you never experience questions requiring to return to a fresh factory restore and then have to go through the whole update process again. The image will also save you if your hard drive fails.  If the HP recovery media is the plain W8 then take the shot.  Then after all the updates are applied and your with set success to date to W8.1 and then take another picture.

I tried a dozen ways to rebuild blocks of MS and it me at every turn. I was able to download win7 from MS, but not with an OEM key. I tried a win8 Dell another disc, but do not have the key.   Serial number, placed at the bottom of the device belongs to the Vista preinstalled on your laptop.
  It s version an OEM and, generally, the serial key does not work with other versions of Vista operating system.

  If you want to install and use a different Vista operating system on your laptop, you will need to use the key supplied with the installation disc.

  But in your case, I would order a new collection of Toshiba of the ASP or from this site:
