Cannot decompress files/folders on Vista

Every time I try to open a file compressed on my computer, Internet Explorer keeps opening & closing, repeatedly, and it forces me to restart my computer. It is my understanding that on Vista when you try and open a zip file by double-clicking it, he automatically unzips the file for to view you this content. Can anyone help please?

Help files offline with all the challenges of Vista, but most of the time it works.  However, I have a number of files that are currently available offline that I no longer need to use offline.  I followed the normal steps of the click right and is going to click on the button "Always work offline", but it is disabled (grayed out).  I thought it might mean that I'm out of sync, but after a synch-all, the selection is always disabled.  Is there a way to Vista to do this?

  • Cannot add files/folders to the Media Player library

Hello.  New user of Windows Media Player (WMP) here.  Using Vista business so I think I have Media Player 11.

I have MP3 (converted M4a format) files on an external hard drive.  WMP will play them very well, but I can't seem to add them to the "library".  I tried to manually add the folder to the external hard drive, these files are in the folders that WMP scans to add items.  When I press 'OK', WMP seems analysis this folder added (it shows some 3 000 scanned files), but it only shows nothing added to the library.

I cannot rip from CD for this external hard drive and WMP looks ID, create folders and copy the songs to the disc hard drive very well (AND add them to the library very well).  But I can not "RIP" these MP3 files anywhere... "RIPPING" seems to be only for the files on CD and the computer.

I must be missing something simple!  Is it possible to add these existing MP3 files to my library?

    Thank you!

Your library has probably been corrupted, so it needs to be reset, by following the instructions for WMP 11 Vista at http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html#medialibrary . Note the reset of the library will make you lose all the counts to play and possibly ratings too.

After the reset of the library, add the folder music on the external hard drive to the list of WMP watched folders.

  • cannot share files from my Vista computer

I have a home network with 4 PC on it. My main PC is a Vista desktop computer, it is connected to my router. The other PC is connected wirelessly. I have a laptop with windows 7. and 2 other desktops with xp installed.  My problem is the following... I have no problem to share files and folders off my public folder on my Vista machine with the rest of the network, but for some reason, I can't share files or folders on my home network on any other place on the Vista PC.  I have an extra hard drive 500 gig installed on my Vista PC I want to use it as a central backup for all of my network drive... but for some reason that I cannot share any files or folders on this drive. I have no problem sharing the drive with other users on this pc... but I can't do it shared on the network. I tried all the conventional techniques of sharing, but no luck. I just get a message that the network resource is not available. It appears on my network under the PC, but it is not accessible. Initially, I wanted to share the entire disc... but advised him to be just a folder in the drive to share rather than trying to share the root of the drive... but still no luck.   What Miss me?

Note: this is a problem with all of my machines in network... not a single one of them can access this drive.

  • Cannot restore files after reinstalling Vista

My problem is that doubles 1. Everything I know about building and nothing about computers and 2. When I had trouble with my Word program, IE. It took 10 to 15 minutes to load, someone suggested that I reinstalled it to try to solve the problem. There can be no. Then, he suggested I have reinstall full vista I did. He asked if I wanted to back up my files, to which I answered Yes. It took several hours to install fuly and when I got home he had finished and almost nothing on the screen except a few editing base.  He had of course saved and everything saved on the hard drive somewhere, I had a friend TI to throw a glance and he was not at all familiar with it. But he had found and restored in a file named "bob."  But the big problem is that I can not open an any of them as file extensions are unknown. I really need to bring them especially my photos. My backup of records were destroyed in a fire of the site office and all the photos of my partner who died since in a car accident, were there. So close they are tempting, but cannot display. I tried to Microsoft to take over my computer remotely and sort it out for me, but may not return to the right place in the vast world of Microsoft.
Anyone can help, but it must be in plain English and not the computer language.
    My computer is a Dell Dimension 9200 and vista is small business. ;

    Hello jonowlbarn,

Thank you for using the Microsoft Windows Vista Forums.

Before you reinstalled Windows Vista didn't have you backed up your files? If so you back up your files on the same hard drive that Vista has been installed on?  If Yes, then performed reverse would be erased when you remove Vista.  I added some information below for that matter.  Please let us know status.  Thank you!

To make sure that you do not lose the files you create, edit and store on your computer, you must save the regularly. You can back up your files any time or manually configure automatic backups.

Note The ability to set up automatic backups is not included in Windows Vista Starter and Windows Vista Home Basic Edition.

    1.

Open the backup center and restore by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking system and Maintenance, and then click backup and Restore Center.

    2.

Click back up files, and follow the steps in the wizard. If you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

No backup files on the same hard disk that Windows is installed. For example, to make the back not files on a recovery partition. Always store media used for backups (external hard disks, DVDs, or CDs) in a safe place in order to prevent unauthorized access to your files; a separate fireproof place of your computer is recommended. You can also consider encrypting the data on your backup.

  • Windows files & folders in Vista

Where can I find a good tutorial on the way files and folders are structured in Windows Vista?  I need to restructure mine as thinking that Vista has just been installed.  I know that favorite links appears in blue at the top with Doc, pictures, music, etc.  Then under this office and users, etc.  Where the Public appears in this hiarchy as well.  Anyone know if there is a source that explains how this should be implemented?  In addition, I need to know how he handles the files that are saved for a particular user.

    Hi Clyde,

    1. do you get an error message/code?

    2. What is the model number of the external drive?

    3. What is the brand and model of the computer?

In order to diagnose the problem, you can check if Device Manager disk external drive is listed:

    a. type devmgmt.msc in the start menu, run the box, then press enter on the keyboard.

    b. in Device Manager, check if the hard drive is listed in the list of devices.

  • Impossible to delete some files on windows vista (read-only cannot be deselected, either)

Right... excuse me for grammar mistakes, I'm Dutch. So there you go.

I am a user of Windows Vista on a HP Pavilion Entertainment PC. I uninstalled World of Warcraft yesterday, and there are two files that I can't remove, no matter what I try. If I want to delete them, I first get this:

    http://img691.imageshack.us/img691/483/eerstdit.PNG

Can I get something I can't print screen for a reason, telling me to give my permission as an administrator of the laptop. What I'm doing. Then, I get this:

    http://img691.imageshack.us/img691/1054/endandit.PNG

Remains and stays and stays (you get the picture), no matter how many times I click on 'Retry '. Of course, when I press cancel, it stops completely, and the files are still there.

== Fun facts (or something like that) =.

    http://img62.imageshack.us/img62/7725/mapwb.PNG

None of the files are marked as "read-only":

    http://img62.imageshack.us/img62/6421/FileProperties.PNG

But the plan is amrked as such... However, the name of the map can be changed. (As seen when I changed it to 'h' instead of 'World of Warcraft' to see if it would somehow effect). The names of the files, however, cannot.

    http://img62.imageshack.us/img62/9439/mapproperties.PNG

When I try to change the map to 'no read-only', simply unchecking the box and try 'apply' or 'ok', I get the same response from the computer I get when I try to delete the files: no way I'll do .

I tried to do since the mode without failure of the laptop with the same exact results. I am the only admin on the computer (in fact, I'm the only account outside the 'guest' one) and Yes, I am enrolled in the two-person-list, who is an administrator (which is strange in itself, because, as I said, the other account should not exist even) have the files.

Of course I can't open the files, because the programs they were running with disappeared with uninstalling WoW.

    http://img707.imageshack.us/img707/5599/Openen.PNG

And this is my story. If nobody here knows, suggestions to other places that they might know are also welcome.

Try to use one of the following free products to remove the file/folder.  Unlocker to: http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/System-Miscellaneous/Unlocker.shtml or file Assassin http://www.malwarebytes.org/fileassassin.php (with or without forcing the deletion: http://www.mydigitallife.info/2008/12/27/force-delete-cannot-delete-locked-or-in-used-files-or-folders-with-fileassassin/). These programs often work when normal functions remove Vista not work correctly.

If this does not work, it may be a permissions problem.  Try to give permission in their own right and also appropriate.  Here is information on how to do these two things:

To view your permissions, right-click on the file/folder, click Properties, and check the Security tab.  Check the permissions you have by clicking on your user name (or group of users).  Here are the types of permissions, you may have: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/What-are-permissions.  You must be an administrator or owner to change the permissions (and sometimes, being an administrator or even an owner is not sufficient - there are ways to block access (even if a smart administrator knows these ways and can move them - but usually should not because they did not have access, usually for a very good reason).)  Here's how to change the permissions of folder under Vista: http://www.online-tech-tips.com/windows-vista/set-file-folder-permissions-vista/.  To add take and the issuance of right of permissions and ownership in the right click menu (which will make it faster to get once it is configured), see the following article: http://www.mydigitallife.info/2009/05/21/take-and-grant-full-control-permissions-and-ownership-in-windows-7-or-vista-right-click-menu/.

To resolve this problem with folders, appropriating the files or the drive (as an administrator) and give you all the rights.  Right-click on the folder/drive, click Properties, click the Security tab and click on advanced and then click the owner tab.  Click on edit, and then click the name of the person you want to give to the property (you may need to add if it is not there--or maybe yourself). If you want that it applies to subfolders and files in this folder/drive, then check the box to replace the owner of subcontainers and objects, and click OK.  Back and now there is a new owner for files and folders/player who can change the required permissions.  You can change now switched to read-only (even if the main folder indicates that they are always read-only - you can access yourself as the owner).  You can keep them in read-only to other users, customers and administrators even (although they can support themselves and access, if they wish, and it is really not that you can do to stop it except protect the file with a password by using a 3rd party product.)  Here is more information on the ownership of a file or a folder: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/67717-take-ownership-file.html.  To add take ownership in the menu of the right click (which will make it faster to get once it is configured), see the following article: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/add-take-ownership-to-explorer-right-click-menu-in-vista/.

If this does not work, try to reinstall WOW and then uninstall it with Revo http://www.snapfiles.com/reviews/revo-uninstaller/revouninstaller.html instead of using the option to uninstall Vista (Revo does a better job and can cope with these two files during the process).

Good luck and I hope this helps!
