Cannot insert license in an ESXi host

I can not insert the valid of ESXi keys to change evaluation mode Full license an unlimited license manages the host and the license doesn't "stick" I r its license problem so I need to get the timeout message.   Can I delete multiple hosts, insert the license and then re add hosts?

Sorry for the very late reply.

I was using the license for ESXi free Hypervisorr.  I could insert but the message was that she was allowed to always.  However, I had installed the trial vCenter and Windows Server Technical Preview.  It was impossible (for me) to tell the Vcenter VServer not managing ESXi hosts. Spend too much time on it I tried to uninstall the vCenter but apparently, he wrote many keys in the registry that are not removed automatically.  Unfortuantley it does for many, if not more, VMware products install on Windfows operating systems.  They expect that for sure you will want to install product Ref.   That is why the ESXI thought it was even if it was handled (from a non-existent server).  I asked the problem by far for a few days and then continued to the next version of what is now officially called Windows Server 2016 previews tech build 9841 (of October) would stop work on 15 April in any case, I found my copy of the server.   The next is expected early next month.  So I deleted all the Windows Server that was VM.   Iwill install vSpre customer t (not the web client!) and must be driven to re-inter code by ab.  If Esxi still thinks its managed by a non-existent Windows Server so I guess I hope it works maintenance or re - mode install ESXi servers.

Although tedious to be sure, it's the only way to learn - the documentation is totally insufficient.

Thanks for the reply.

I havn't done it myself yet, but I think you should be able to achieve your goal, follow these steps:

-downgrade license keys CPU Essentials to v5 im Portal MyVMware

-the value of the new vCenter Server Evaluation Mode (actually maybe not necessary)

-Add the licenses of Essentials v5 license vCenter inventory 6

-Add hosts to the new vCenter Server ESXi 5.5 and assign licenses Essentials guests

-re - assign the license previously removed to vCenter Server

  • Cannot access vm 5.1 Esxi host visitors

I have a vma and a windows PC as guests on a 5.1 Esxi host.  I can access the host and two guests I can ping everything on the network and guests can ping each other.  I can't ping my subnet guests, but guests can ping my workstation.  I can ping the guests of a workstation on the same subnet.  I think with a new 5.1 installation, you cannot ping to other subnets, but I can't access the VMAs on port 5480 to manage either. There is no firewall between my workstation and guests.   Help!

  • Cannot add VMFS datastore to ESXi host

    Hi all

I have a problem with the CF 1 logical unit number which can be seen as a device through several paths on all 10 hosts in a cluster, but it appear as a data store VMFS on 6 of the hosts. Other LUNS of the same Bay appear correctly on all hosts. 10 guests see the LUN with the same LUN ID and all hosts are identical regarding the version of ESXi (5.0 Update 2), HBA and firmware models.

On the 4 hosts who can see the device but not the VMFS data store, it seems that he sees the LUN as a snapshot: 'list of snapshot storage vmfs esxcli' translates into:

    4f5e5cbb-a87cd2c6-86e9-d8d385f98034
    Volume name: LUN101_SAS2
    VMFS UUID: 4f5e5cbb-a87cd2c6-86e9-d8d385f98034
    Can mount: true
    Reason of mountability-United Nations:
    Can will: false
Reason for non-resignaturability: the volume is actively used
    County of measure pending: 1

The UUID VMFS above matches the UUID VMFS seen on 6 guests who can see the VMFS data store.

When I try to use 'Add storage', the device appears with a lambel VMFS: LUN101_SAS2(head). I don't know why (head) was added to the label of VMFS. Oscreen n the following signature to keep 'existing' and "Assign a new signature" options are grayed out. The only option is "Disc Format. I need to keep the existing signature because it run virtual machines that have their files .vmx and hard on this LUN.

Would the fact that I have virtual machines running on this LUN, I cannot choose the option to "keep the existing signature?

I need to Storage vMotion these virtual machines to a different LUN before I add the VMFS datastore to 4 guests?

    TIA

    Hey RoscoT;

    Try the following command

    #esxcfg - volume - l

    This should show the volume

To constantly increase the volume, use esxcfg-volume - M followed of the UUID or volume name

  • How to recover the license of discommissioned ESXi host?

On the web, my understanding is that when we stop the host ESXi, the license will be available for the vcenter Server.  However, the license is not released.

Is there any step that we missed?

    Your opinion is requested.

    Thank you

Judgment of the host is not enough.

You must remove the host to vCenter as well.

  • vCenter 6 in a WAN configuration - cannot add 6.0.0 ESXi host, is stuck at 80%

    All,

I tried a day now to find a solution to this. We have 6 break-in LAN1 vcenter, connect a host ESXi LAN1 and ESXi another I LAN2. LAN1 and LAN2 are connected with IPsec. Resolution of DNS works both ways, as far as I can tell and all ports are open between the hosts. We had everything up and running but due to hardware failure, needed to replace the ESXi I LAN2.

With the new host in place, I am not able to add to vcenter. I tried to use the name and IP address. I even downgraded to a previous version of ESXi, but all does not work, stuck at 80% progress bar. Then the message "Failed to contact the host specified." Checking the logs I see that vcenter is actually connected to ESXi in LAN2 and creating the account vpxuser to communication works in one way at least.

I remember I had the problems of implementation of the previous host in LAN2, but all of a sudden it worked simply.

Someone at - he had no idea where to start looking?

Make sure you have the MTU settings assign identical values everywhere.

  • Upgrade license on ESXi host for a Standard license for vSphere

On an ESXi host using the free version, I understand that to have it managed by our current Server vCenter (which is licensed to vCenter Server Standard 4) we must update the license on the ESXi host for a vSphere Standard license. First is correct in what I think? I know there is another option using the vSphere Essentials, but this only covers 3 hosts of what I read and we have 4 hosts ESXi we want to manage, and also we would prefer to have all managed under the vCenter server if possible.

Second, if it's true, it's as simple as putting in the new license key on the ESXi host, and then I will be able to manage through our current server vCenter (who also manage our ESX host)? Or it would be a full erase + install different version of ESX on each host?

    Thank you

you are perfectly right and it's as simple as that. Just enter the new key on the host computer through the vSphere client and add it to vcenter.

The standard license is the one you want.

  • Cannot assign a license to VMware ESXi 5.0 hosts

    Dear all,

I installed vCenter Server 5.0 standard IBM x 3550 M4 and VMware ESXi 5.0 Standard for two M4 IBM 3650 x servers. I can attribute vCenter Server Standard 5 license to vCenter Server 5.0 but I can't affect VMware vSphere 5 Standard licenses for both ESXi 5.0 servers. Each server has 2x6Cores 2.3 GHz CPU (12 cores total). VMware vSphere 5 licenses that we purchase are VMware vSphere 5 Standard for 1 processor (VS5-STD-C) x 12, which is unlimited cores per processor. Can someone tell me what is the problem here and the reason why I still can't assign license to two 5.0 ESXi hosts.

    Rgds,

    Syairus

If I understand correctly you have 12 licenses for 1 CPU each! In order to assign a license to a host of the CPU, the license capacity must be equal to or greater than the number of the host CPU. You can combine licenses in the portal My VMware.

BTW. for two host with 2 CPU each, you need only 4 licenses of CPU (not 12), as processors/sockets are allowed, not carrots.

  • Mobile 5.1 ESXi host in vCenter unpublished 6 - license?

    Hi all -

If I take an ESXi host 5.1, previously managed (under license) via a given vCenter (also v5.1) and its key in the inventory management, then I disconnect/remove this host from the vCenter 5.1 and connect it to a completely new vCenter, what happens to the host of license?

It disappear and become a 60-day eval, or his license key moves WITH the host in the new vCenter?  (The new vCenter in this scenario would have absolutely zero license keys from host ESXi that apply to guests of ESXi 5.1 existing installs below)

I was wondering what 'happens' in this scenario I have the document our so-called steps for migration.  Yes, I know that this could / should all be tested "in the lab" but don't get started me on that.  Thanks for any comments on what I can expect.

My best guess is that the host will LOSE its license now, it becomes a 'standalone' ESXi host when disconnected and removed from the old vCenter (via the "Delete" command).  I want to just make sure that it is also fully functional, if she has run VMs on it at the time or not (although Yes, I'll put it in maintenance mode before removing the old VirtualCenter and join a new).

And Yes, of course I have old games of the existing environment 5.1 ESXi license keys.  I'm just trying to set expectations as to what is happening in licenses-wise once I move the host from the old to the new vCenter.  I have all pretty well understood technical pieces, including AVS and DVS network considerations.  Thank you.

  • Cannot apply license to ESXi 4.1

Finally got a 64-bit hardware I could install ESXi 4.1 on.  I downloaded and installed fine.  Go to y to connect and I get the message saying that I have a 60 day trial and need to install the license.  Well, for the life of me I can't figure out how to install the license!  I found a video saying that you just go to "license" when you connect to your VSphere Client.  When I'm in the VSphere client, however, I don't see an option "licenses" that I can go in.  I see only 'roles', 'inventory' and 'log' (see image).

Can someone help me understand what Miss me?  ESXi is supposed to be the "free version", right?

Click the inventory button, find your ESXi host, go to the tab configuration - service under license - edit.  There, you can add the key without expiration date

It is an ugly one. At least a restart if not re-install. To minimize downtime, you can close out of virtual machines to the inventory and put them on another host/cluster.

  • Director of the laboratory - cannot export to ESXi host (SMBMount unsupported)

    Hi all

I had this problem since the liberation.  This is my environment:

Director of the laboratory of 4.0.1

    vCenter 4.0 Update 1

    ESXi (3 guests) 4.0 Update 1

Shared storage: EMC SAN with NAS volume on gigabit ethernet.

I opted to use on ESX ESXi VMWare's future, as far as development.

My problem is this: when I click to export a configuration of Lab Manager, it fails with "Error in export."  The details of the message are:

    * Error export the Configuration.

vCenter Lab Manager cannot find that any suitable host connected to the "NFS Datastore" data store for this operation.

Host 'ESXi1' is an ESXi host and does not support smbmount.*

I installed ESXi being under the impression he was supposed to have all the same functionality as ESX.  Now, I have myself screwed... my users will sometimes have to export configurations to test booting the VMS of USB dongles (as there is no USB transfer directly to a virtual computer that it's time to start).  If at least 3 times a week I have to export virtual machines, one by one, to a network share, which is quite tedious and quite annoying.

Is on the timeline of development?  I noticed that the 4.0.2 has been released, but by its requirements (http://www.vmware.com/support/labmanager40/doc/releasenotes_labmanager402.html#newfeatures) it does not support ESXi 4.x, which is strange because the requirements for Lab Manager 4.0.1 (http://www.vmware.com/support/labmanager40/doc/releasenotes_labmanager40.html) list ESXi 4.0 as a host in charge.

Can someone please shed some light on this issue and maybe get it on the development plan for the next version of Lab Manager?

    Thank you!

    -Jesse Reinhart

    stemplar,

We don't do generally no update notes version after a product has been released.

In addition, it is not specific to Lab Manager, ESXi does not support required... orders so Lab Manager is just stating the restriction of resource pools provided.  As far as I remember, ESXi did not support smbmount (or mount-t smbfs) since its inception.

  • Can we change ESXi host license license free licensed?

We currently have two additional CPU of ESX license so that we can assign a new install ESXi host that is not connected to FC SAN.

However, we would like to know because of the need, can change us the license assigned to the ESXi host under a free license, so that we can use it on another ESX or ESXi host?

    Thank you

Yes, you can change any time, licenses you have is only the functionality.

If you run virtual Center and you have a rich license feature and decided to change for free, save a single license, you could end up losing the functionality and the ability to power on if some vm of the vcpu exceed your new license mode.

But tehcnically licenses you can change anytime, you could even remove a license and return to eval for 60 days.

  • vSphere 4 + ESXi 4: Image using a RDM cannot be migrated to a different host, card held locally RDM?...

I have two servers ESXi 4.0 and one of vSphere (4.0), their management. These two ESXi hosts can see a LUN on a NetApp FAS2020 and they see it as the same device (if I change the name on the same host, its automatically changed on another host). I have also a larger NFS volume that I use for my VMDK files, and it is on both ESXi hosts. All my guests use the NFS data store for their primary, and several disks use it to a secondary drive.

I have a specific host to use an iSCSI LUN of the NetApp for its secondary drive. I added it as a Raw Device Mapping (tried physical and virtual), but when I go through the installation program, must I store a map file of the LUNS on a data store. Unfortunately, the single data store, you have an option is the LOCAL DRIVE of the ESXi host. As soon as you start the system and try to migrate, it fails because the second vServer cannot reach the mapping file that is located on the first vServer.

What I'm doing wrong here... Why can't store the mapping file ROW with the rest of this VMDK and file EXCHANGE virtual servers?

I think it is because the file pointer needs a block device. You can check KB for details. And Yes, you need another logical unit number (type vmware) and create a VMFS on it to store the pointer files.
