  Regarding the .dot file, this is not a graphic file. A .dot file is a MS Word template file.

  It works for the other connections on this machine.  So, with the worries of shrinking to s/o the origin of the problem,

  I saved my files and re-created a new account.  The new account works fine, so I deleted the old account.

  I really don't know why this has happened given I have not installed the brand new s/w recently.

  Copy what is between the = lines, paste into a new Notepad document and save it as "helpsvc.reg" on the desktop.  Including the quotes in the name of the file if the notebook does not add '.txt' at the end of the file name.  If so, just remove the .txt from the file name extension. Then double-click on helpsvc.reg to the desktop, then choose to merge the file with the registry.  Reboot and see if that helps.

  This problem can occur if the file is not supported by the player or because of missing codecs.

  If you use video app, then try using Windows Media player and see if you can read the file.

  If it points to the app store at the time wherever you play the file, then you may need a supported codec

  To avoid file names in ide.properties 'OpenedFilesHistoryItem' lines. It was earlier implementation and now it should be paths to directories only. Of course, there is an old code in some of the file browser dialog boxes. Or there is a problem when migrating preferences between versions.
