Cannot remove my USB safely

I am not sure that this is the appropriate for this forum, but I didn't know where else to post.

It seems like every week, I have a new problem with my laptop!

I have a laptop HPG50-126NR 4 to 5 years. I am running Windows Vista Home Basic, 32-bit with Service Pack 2. Yesterday, I needed to work on some documents of my SanDisk USB key. I did it without any problem.

However, now I can't remove the USB safely. When I click on the green check mark in the lower status bar right, then he said "Remove USB mass storage - device Drive G.» When I click on it, a pop up says:

"Windows cannot stop the 'Generic Volume' device because it is in use." Close programs or windows that might be using the device and then try again later."

Well, all programs and windows are closed to my knowledge. At least, I don't see any open. My guess is the key USB hangs by a window (maybe Firefox is running in the background) or a program that attaches to the USB, but I have no way of knowing. I can try sutting down, but I am concerned about the documents on the USB.

Any ideas what to do or the best forum I can ask.

Thank you.

Hello

Thanks for posting on the HP Forums!

I understand that the computer can't find not safe eject a USB device. I apologize for the inconveniences of your laptop, but I'll see what I can do to help you!

First of all, this happens with multiple USB devices or alone. If this happens with one, the unit could be in trouble. If this happens with multiple devices, then you know that the problem lies in the computer. If this is the case, try the following steps:

1.right - click on your taskbar, and then select Start Task Manager.

2. look for Explorer.exe and interrupt the process.

3. click on file, then new task. Type Explorer.exe and let it restart.

At this point, you should be able to remove media. Please let me know your results. Thank you for bringing This problem on the HP Forums. Have a great day!

  • Cannot stop a USB device due to some unknown program running.

If I can't stop a device USB due to some unknown program running (like a virus), how can I find the program, so that I can stop it with the Task Manager?

    Hello

The message (this device is currently in use. Close any programs or windows that might be using the device, and then try again) is usually the result of an application, file, open the document, audio or video, or any other application is being used (ranging from the USB key) when you try to remove it by clicking Remove the device safely in the notification area.

The error can also be caused if your anti-virus is actively followed / analyze the USB drive. Normally, where the withdrawal of a USB flash drive, Windows must stop all operations of reading / writing on the disk so that it can be removed safely. If this is not the case, the flash player may be damaged or lost or corrupted data. However, if Windows determines that a file is in use, it can then provide a message that indicates the volume cannot be stopped now.

So, before to eject or unplug a mass storage device, make sure that none of these activities are performed on the mass storage device before ejecting.

    A cut-off device

Most USB devices can be removed and unplugged. When the fact of unplugging storage devices, such as USB flash drives, make sure that the computer has finished saving all the information on the device before removing it. If the device has an activity light, wait a few seconds after the light has finished flashing before unplugging.

If you see the icon remove the device safely in the tray on the side right of the bar tasks, you can use it as an indication that devices have finished all operations in progress and are ready to be removed. Click the icon and you will see a list of devices. Click the device you want to remove. Windows will display a notification to tell you that it is safe to remove the device.

I also suggest you make a system full scan just to be sure.

Note: The data files that are infected must be cleaned only by removing the file completely, which means that there is a risk of data loss.
  • Cannot eject the USB device.

Cannot eject the USB device. I don't see the icon to safely remove in the task bar.
I tried to run the following path, but not luck.

    (C:\Windows\System32\rundll32.exe shell32.dll, Control_RunDLL hotplug.dll)

The icon is hidden behind the small arrow in the lower right of your screen.  Click on that, and you will see a number of icons, which one will remove safe material one.  Be aware that unless you have a removable USB device connected, the icon will not be there.

    Good luck.

  • Not able to remove the USB stick while Labview is open

    For all the gurus.

I'm using LabView 8.5 and made an Application that requires the user to download the data of the disc/USB. Then, when VI works user invited to select a. TXT from USB to download file. Here, the entire operation ends as desired. Only ONE PROBLEM I am facing is when download completed attempts to the user to 'remove the USB' where gives windows a warning saying USB is in use and cannot be deleted.

This particular VI I use function of file dialog box to browse USB and let the user select a file. I even tried to use the function to open the file, but it gives same error.

The only way I can pull out USB after the download is out of Labview which is not feasible for my application.

is this a Bug in 8.5 or is there a different way to do it?

    Any help will be appreciated.

You can call the Windows API SetCurrentDirectory function (see attachment), but if you follow the link you will see it warns about its use in multithreaded applications. I have no experience with it, so I can't comment.

    Registry warning:

Sometimes, this problem is due to two Windows that have been corrupted registry entries. To resolve this problem, you must use the registry editor to remove the damaged registry entries.

However, serious problems can occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you proceed with caution. For added protection, back up the registry before you edit it. Then you can restore the registry if a problem occurs.

For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, proceed as in the KB Article:

  • After that, remove the USB

    Hi all

I recently purchase player Sansa e270 now my query is when I connect the drive to my laptop is shows only connected to the screen and I am not able to perform any other operation on my player.

Also once I'm done to copy all my files on the drive, and after getting a message from windows Vista to safly, disconnect the player. Sansa displays a message as disconnected, and then remove the USB of my laptop, Player automatically restarts and refreshing database shows.

What is a normal activity after plugging the USB cord into the laptop and safly remove the USB to the laptop.

    Thanks in advance

Yes, quite normal. However, I recommend that you use the 'Safe To Remove Hardware' icon in the system tray before unplugging.  After you use your player should show "Disconnected" then you can unplug safely.  It restarts again and refreash data base.

  • How do I remove the USB key in Windows 7

I just upgraded from Vista x 64 to Windows 7 Home Premium x 64. All right, as far as I can tell, but I don't see any way to stop or remove a USB HDD. When I am using a flash drive, the context menu offers the possibility to "Eject", but this option does not appear for USB drives. What Miss me?

The icon 'Remove hardware safely' is available for USB drives, too. It mine, shows anyway. You probably just hid it. Win7 does not display the default icon more.

  • ESXi USB, what happens if you then remove the USB boot?

    Hello

Someone in our team IT wants to use ESXi 5 bootable, i.e. start an ESXi host for a 2 GB USB flash drive in order to save the cost of buying the hard drives local to a RAID set.

I know there are a few downsides to this, but one thing I wanted to know more precisely, it is what happens to the ESXi if you remove the USB or the USB drive goes down, while the host is running. The army continues to operate, as it will be charged the ESXi image in memory? Or it will fail if it cannot see the USB as it initialized from?

    Thank you!

ESXi will work on - running some virtual machines are not affected.

Usually, there should be no problem to plug new - but I have seen cases where the system does not start after a rough unplug - so avoid it.

  • Remove a USB IRDA caused stop "panic."

After you click safely remove hardware - USB IRDA my computer crashes and I have to turn the computer off. If I leave the attached USB IRDA and sign out of windows and VMWare Fusion, I can remove it then physically without a problem.

I use the USB IRDA with program Polar Trainer Pro on Vista on a MacBook 13 ".

Apple's USB drivers had a bug in OS X 10.5.6 which would cause panic in some cases.

How about you go to the Tools menu > modules and disabling the add-on!

Not that I can find a "manually change the files' on the site of the add-on.

I can find a manually records sort that does exactly what it says, but does not add and the columns you show. I can also find "additional folder columns" which aims to give your comments headers. The page Add on like the third picture shows a right click option or click to turn on the power on and off columns.

  • Cannot remove the ghost folder. Error message: there is no such mailbox

When I configure Thunderbird to connect to my Alpine Webmail, I had to rearrange my folders. Cannot remove a folder titled "mail" because according to TB "there is no such mailbox" but still shows on the tab my folders. I read through the previous discussions and have tried to unsubscribe the ghost folder, but that did not work or the other. I have a Mac OSX if this affects what it is. Please let me know if you have any suggestions. Thank you.

Hello world. I solved the problem... somehow. By removing the account of Treasury Board and put in place again, TB has been able to sync with the files that were on Alpine. The ghost folder still presented (despite not existing not not on the Alpine site), but by changing the directory to the IMAP server of "mail" to "mailbox" the ghost folder disappeared. I found myself with records who have been named oddly (most likely due to the change of the name of directory) so when I changed the IMAP server directory to "mail" it reset my files with the way they were, with the exception of the ghost folder, that was no longer there. I'm not entirely sure why it worked, but in case someone else has a similar problem, I recommend to give it a try.

Thank you all for your comments and help.
