Change license to essential to Enterprise Plus 5.0 cluster

Good morning guys,

I need help on the amendment of license for a SME clients.

In fact, we have a cluster with only 3 5.0 Esxi hosts and a vcenter license with the essential Pack.

Add other hosts and the customer has already purchased the Enterprise more licenses for guests (old and new).

What is the best way of change the Licensing without creating problems in the production environment?

Do I have to Unplug le hosts de vcenter, changing the vcenter licenses and then reconnect the different host to vcenter to new by assigning them a new license? We would like to avoid creating a new cluster to which Add former ESXi nodes to maintain some configurations (as fencing for a CentOS cluster). Thanks for your suggestions regarding
Antonio

Hi Antonio,.

There is no impact to change the license at all. You simply replace the current license with the new. Not need to unplug the host or any other thing.

This is the KB.

Thank you

  • vSphere Enterprise Plus & SMP 8 licenses see

    Hi all

This post is to understand in some detail more added functionality SMP 8 channels with the purchase of the vSphere enterprise than allowed.

We just bought a new battery of vSphere with Enterprise license (guests are taken-2, 4-cores CPU based) and upgrade to vSphere another battery of existing ESX 3.5 servers (hosts are 4 socket, 4 core based processors).

We know that, according to the license of the company, we will be able to assign our VMs a maximum of 4 vCPUs each (and up to 6 cores per physical processor).

Should upgrade us to Enterprise Plus licensing, what would the number of vCPU max we can give in to a virtual machine in each of our farms? Would he still be 4 (since our CPUs are anyway all 4 cores) or 8 (for both the 'old' farm hosts 4 4-cores and the new farm-based based on 2 hearts 4 guests)?

In fact it is not clear to me if the maximum number of vCPU is always equal to the number of physical processor cores (e.g.: max vCPU & lt; = carrots/physical CPU AND max vCPU & lt; = 8) or not.

For example, I would have a crowd of vSphere license-powered Enterprise Plus and ewuipped with 2 processors 6 hearts, vCPU how can I assign to a VM as a maximum? 6 or 8?

Thank you very much for your help.

    Best regads,

    Salvatore

Enterprise Plus allows you to assign 8 vCPUs, Enterprise and bottom - 4.

It does not matter the number of cores is on each physical processor. The only requirement - the total number of cores must be greater than or equal number of vCPUs you want to give a VM. So 2 quads allows you to create 8 vCPU VM.

  • Assigning carrots not processors in Enterprise Plus

I have a dilemma that the introduction of the Enterprise Plus has created for me. I drank the Kool-Aid of VMWare and taken my company with me and I was positive of the plu company would solve all my problems, but instead, it has created a new problem that I did not anticipate. I hope someone called it and a workaround or some news on this issue of the fixation of VMware.

We run virtualized SQL and until plu company, our SQL servers were 2 to 4 processors, no problem. Hosts run us these are core (8 cores) of the x 4 2 channels or 4 channel x 6 main systems (base 24 total). We had several loads of work requiring more than 4 cores, so we left those physical. When the plu company came out, we had the ability to assign up to 8 cores for a guest, now I could virtualize workloads. I thought it would be fantastic, but instead, I now have a problem with windows, see 8 processors.

Microsoft has recently changed their licenses to be much friendlier to virtualization. They now allow SQL to be licensed while only running on a virtual machine based on the number of vCPUs assigned to the guest divided by the number of cores per processor in the host system. So in my example, I have a box of 4 x 6 with a virtual machine running 8 vCPUs. Microsoft says take 8 vCPUs divide by 6 cores per processor and determines that I need license 2 (1.3 roundups) licenses processor SQL standards to be legal. See page 29 of the doc SQL licenses for examples http://www.microsoft.com/sqlserver/2008/en/us/licensing.aspx if you are interested.

So, I only need to buy 2 licenses processor SQL standard edition to the Microsoft license requirements. This is the problem come. VMWare is not with 2 processors to 4 cores, or some other combination, it presents all processors with none of the nuclei to the guest OS. The guest operating system sees only 4 processors and therefore SQL. I can install Windows enterprise and see 8-processor SQL will use only 4 as the SQL standard allows only 4 processors, so to see all 8, I need to install SQL enterprise. While this works, it isn't something I should do, and I'm not technically a license for the company of the two OS installation.

The huge problem it causes is the cost. On a server to 4 physical processors with 6 cores of each, if I had to run windows directly on the box I have to Windows standard license ($1 K) and the SQL Standard for 2 processors ($8K per proc) for a total of $17 K and my SQL server can use all 24 cores. If I run this same machine on top of VMware with 8 vCPUs I now run Windows Enterprise ($4 K) and SQL Enterprise for ($20 K per proc) for a total of 84 K $. I can't pay an extra $67 K to virtualize each workload.

This problem would be easily solved if VMWare just processors with carrots to the OS rather than the processors to without seeds. Any ideas?

  • Upgrade to ESXi 5.1 (free version) to vSphere Enterprise Plus 5.1

I've been running the free version of ESXi for a few years now and I am currently on version 5.1. Recently, I decided to buy Enterprise Plus licenses to take advantage of features such as vShield and agent less backups.

in any case, I loaded the new license in vSphere client and it shows now all the options available in Enterprise Plus. The profile of the iMage is ESXi - 5.1xxxx - standard. Is it enough just to load the new license or is there a different image that I need to use instead?

If it's a different picture can I put it on top of what is installed without losing the guests?

    THX!

It won't matter. Host---> Configuration---> Licensed features---> if it shows more Enterprise, then you will have all the features. I have attached a screenshot to show what he looks like. If it's the same then you don't have to worry.

  • VSA license and essential plus

Hello everyone, how are you going to do?

Guys, I have a question about the license of AUV with essentials more. I brought the most essential and installed 2 hosts and the ASB. Everyone says that VSA is now FREE with any purcharse essentials more BUT I Don t have a key to it, and it is to show that it will expire.
I called VMware and they told me that nothing will happen after him experies, that I m 'legal' with this solution.

    Someone knows something about it?

    I m using ESXi 5. 1(b) with VSA vsa-VMware-all - 5.1.1.0 - 859703.iso

    Thank you

The display of the license is confusing, but you're all set.  You have an evaluation license VSA, Essentials and an Essentials licensed + license.  The ASB on watch box that VSA uses the Essentials + license, not the eval license.  The license Essentials + shows that no expiration.

  • Is ESX 5.0 Enterprise Plus transferable license server? If I bought used?

I bought a server provided with 'VMware vsphere 5 plu enterprise number of virtual machines', already allowed for unlimeted installed on it, this was one of the old servers disused software top what I remember...

    1. am I now own this software provided with the equipment on which it is?

    2. If Yes, would this software attached to only this material, or could he be wiped hardware and software reloaded on new hardware?

3 or is dependent on your stay with the original owner? can it be transferred from owners?

Just curious, I currently run esxi 5.1 on a new system. This system, I want to talk about is a former server, I want to sell and so would like to know my legitimate legal options to exit the software out there and sell. Or maybe remove the license key and keep myself to use it on a newer server hardware, or simply delete if I don't own the software: (.) It's coming off a hungry sunserver, noisey old power which must be sold.

You can transfer a license that you own server to server.

You cannot use a license which has been on a server that was purchased from the previous owner of the server.  The following is from the EULA for vSphere:

    2. LICENSE GRANT.

2.1 scope of license. Subject to the terms and conditions of this EULA, VMware grants you, during the licence term, a license, non-exclusive and non-transferable use the software, in the form of executable code only, the territory, for your internal operations in accordance with (a) Documentation; (b) the Type of licence for which you have paid the applicable fees; (c) other applicable restrictions set out in the order. The software license is limited to the amounts specified in each order there is.

  • Volume under license of Windows 7 Enterprise Edition new install hangs at disk.sys

Original title: installation of new Windows 7 hangs at disk.sys

We have conducted our mail, ftp and video servers on XP because we expected a software upgrade for our video server, so that we can install Windows 7. The MB is a Gigabyte GA-H55M-UD2H Revision 1.0. Last week, I took the server down to do the installation of Windows 7 Enterprise. Using the ISO downloaded from our Volume Licensing account I burned onto a dvd it and booted from it.

The system should start and begin installing Windows. The files would load and the screen change to . Then nothing. I fought with him for two days and I tried a thousand (Finally, much) "solutions, I found online, but nothing has worked.

I cloned the drive that contains the system partition - formatted system partition (to record the logical drives on the other partitions) - and tried to install on the empty system partition. Same failure. I allowed the system to boot from the hard drive to the existing installation of XP and it worked normally (it's how I could get away with spending so much time on this: I could put the machine into service between tests).

I took the drive cloned out of the machine and bread-boarded it with a new motherboard (different mfg/etc) and the monitor. I also moved the DVD player, I used during the installation of the system has failed.

I started the machine, started on the burned dvd, and Windows 7 is installed perfectly. I have not installed all the drivers disk from the MB manufacturer.

I moved the hard drive to three different Virgin machines awaiting completion and it Windows 7 has started and ran on all of them.

O.K. - the server: re-installed HDD, disconnected from the other HD, DVD players, etc.

Same failure: Windows 7 starts and crashes after a few seconds. The first time he hooked while to what was supposed to be the same point (disk.sys) guess since the time. Every other time it hangs after startup repair supply and completing l

Go to research on the web it is clear that it is not yet near a problem isolated - I found pages and pages of the report and a variety of approaches to fix - it would take a lifetime to try them all. Surely MS is aware of this - it is hoped (in vain, I'm afraid) that he would have been treated by them. Maybe it's one of these 'features' that defies explanaton. But I hope not.

Is anyone able to make a suggestion? TIA

  • The upgrade of our guests 5.0 ESXi and vCenter Server 5 and 5.5 Enterprise Plus

We are the 4 upgrade hosts of ESXi 5 to 5.5

We add 4 more guests with own ESXi 5.5 installed

We are also upgrading our vCS 5 in the vCSA 5.5

    Using Enterprise + licenses

Question: I'm trying to understand the best way to achieve this transition.  4 guests run about 100 virtual machines and 4 guests we add are clean slates.

That's what I think... Please help me guys

    1. once the 4 new hosts are installed in the Datacenter clean running ESXi 5.5 I will deploy the vCSA ovf and register 4 guests with the Linux-based device.

    2. now, I have 4 new 5.5 ESXi hosts registered and running with vCSA 5.5 but I still have my old 4 guests with ESXi 5 and registered to the old vCS about 100 virtual machines running WIndows

    3. at this point I think stop on my older hosts 4 virtual machines and remove them from the vCenter Server inventory Windows and everything just their registration with the new vCSA

    4. Will be all my virtual machines or transferred with the hosts if I close them and put the hosts in maintenance mode?

    5. now, I should have all 8 guests registered with my new vCSA.  But the original 4 hosts have yet to be upgraded to ESXi 5.5

6 move 100 virtual machines to the new 4 hosts running ESXi 5.5 and upgraded the 4 former hosts.

    7. now, I should have 8 guests with ESXi 5.5 using the vCSA

    See you soon!

    Pretty much.

To make things easier, you can deploy the EGGS for vCSA in your current vCenter (if I remember correctly import an OVA using vCenter allows you to set certain options that should be set to the vCSA shell). After making sure that the vCSA online & configured, you can then install ESXi on all your new hosts, add them to a cluster in the vCSA and put a few trials of virtual machines on there to confirm the network setting is configured correctly. Once it's done (and assuming that the old and the new hosts use the same shared storage) you can stop the vCSA, remove it stock Windows vCS, please write it on one of your new hosts and turn on. You have now two environments (5.0 and 5.5). Next if you disconnect a host from 5.0 vCS (with virtual machines running on it), you can then connect it to the vCSA 5.5. Assuming that the vSwitchs standard networking of the exchanges that are the same name in both environments, you now can vMotion VMs between host 5.0 and 5.5 cluster. At this time, you can repeat with all remaining hosts until everything has been made the transition without service interruption. This will leave a lot of old objects in your old 5.0 vCS, but if that is getting trashed it isn't a big deal.

  • vCentre with vSphere Enterprise and vCentre with vSphere Enterprise Plus

We used 4 * VMware ESX Enterprise 3.5 U4 with Center Virtual v2.5 to our datacenter keys for 2 years. With the release of vSphere we have upgraded to vSphere Enterprise with vCentre since we had bought maintenance for 3 years.

Now let's deploy another 4 * vSphere Enterprise more than servers in one of our other data centers in another location and use of the vCentre same server as our key data center. Two data centers are connected via an MPLS connection.

My query is what is happening with regard to the two lic. and the characteristics of vCentre/vSphere so we have a places vSphere Enterprise Clusters and in another site running a vSphere Enterprise clusters rained for two configurations of the plant as the vSwitch distributed with Ent to a network running. More and the other added features more from the company. What happens if we use the Cisco Nexus 1000 what impact also who have on the global configuration if a site is running Enterprise and other companies.

And also how should I handle the licenses of some of my servers are Ent. and others are Ent. More?

    Thank you very much

Of course also take into account the fact that you can't mix and match servers with different levels of license

For example: If you use enterprise more to Host Profiles and dvSwitch - you can't have the ESX hosts with a lower level of the license in the same cluster
