Q: do you have a Norton or McAfee free trial come preinstalled on the computer when you bought it (and that would have been installed, but not valid, when you reinstalled Vista)?

A: McAfee has been the free trial when I bought the laptop.  I've tended after the expiration on the McAfee.

Comment: If you didn't let the McAfee free trial expires before replace you it with the application of Trend Micro, chances are that you should not have to reinstall Vista.

When you reinstalled Vista, McAfee free trial was also reinstalled, but not valid. You should have (1) uninstalled McAfee free trial AND (2) download / run the McAfee removal tool (see below) before installing Microsoft Security Essentials AND BEFORE that you have installed the Windows updates.

That being said, see if the following solves your problem:

1. download the McAfee Consumer Product Removal, save it to your desktop tool:http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe

2. close all open applications (that is, anything with an icon on the taskbar).

3. click right on the file saved in #1 above, and then select run as administrator to run the utility. DO TAP not your keyboard until the race ends, then restart.

4. open Internet Explorer (only) to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737 & run the difficulty.

5. open Internet Explorer (only) to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058 & run this difficulty in DEFAULT and modes and AGGRESSIVE. [1]

6. restart once again & test.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[1] full Disclosure: the difficulty operating in AGGRESSIVE mode will remove your update history but not the list of installed updates.
    Can you tell me if I need to load the upgrade of Windows 7 or Windows 7 program?
    I have a HP computer I bought a year and a half.  It came with Windows Vista.  Yesterday, while trying to load my Kodak camera on the computer, the computer kept freezing.  After trying all day getting something to work, I decided to get out the manual because I am almost computer illiterate.  He had instructions on restoring my computer, but I didn't completely read the instructions because I had spent so much time trying to make it work.  It was not good.  Everything I've done seems to have deleted Windows Vista... I get a screen that reads like this:
    Cannot start Windows Windows Boot Manager.  A recent hardware or software change might be the cause.  To solve this problem: 1. Insert your windows installation disc, and then restart your computer.  2. choose your language settings, and then click Next.  3. click on repair your computer.  If you do not have this disc contact your system administrator or the manufacturer to rely for assistance.  File: \windows\system32\winload.exe status: oxcooooooF Info: the selected entry could not be loaded because the application is missing or damaged.         My question is this: Windows Vista is still on my computer?  The man I spoke with the geek squad at best buy told me I just need to buy Windows 7 and download it and my computer wouldn't be good as new.  I went to Wal-Mart because Best Buy has been closed at the time wherever I have to go, and the only Windows 7 they have is an upgrade of Windows Vista. The Windows 7 upgrade will work?  The man at WalMart, told me that I have to go out of town to get the Windows 7 program because it would not load without Windows Vista.  I don't know if I need the program or the upgrade.  Help!
    At the startup/power on you should see at the bottom of the screen either F2 or DELETE, go to Setup/Bios or F12 for the Boot Menu.
    In addition, ask them if you have a recovery Partition on your computer/laptop to restore it to factory settings.
    Normally, you have to press F10 or F11 at startup to start the recovery process...
  • Pavilion dm4-3090se: how to use the SSD after restoration of the system of Windows backup disks?
    Hello
    After a lot of work, I finally could restore my OS using Windows backup disks that I created a few years back. (The OS has been corrupted when the power has been accidentally deleted from the system and the battery was dead)
    Restoring backup widows put everything on 444 GB C drive.  Nothing I put on the SSD drive d:-20 GB and there is nothing in the tools of HP E: drive - 4 GB
    How can I make use of the SSD drive to help speed up the system?  I see the system starts and runs more slowly now.  I'm ready to blow the current operating system and re-run the Windows backup utility.  But I need to know how to use the SSD during the restoration.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thank you
    Hey @llebrez,
    Welcome to the Forums of HP Support! This is a great place to find solutions and help our community!
    I understand that you have some information about using the SSD in your HP Pavilion dm4 Beats Edition Entertainment Notebook. I'd be happy to help you with that.
    The SSD in your laptop is used for a technology called Intel Smart Response. Intel Smart Response uses the SSD as a type of Cache smart to help load the items faster. The reason why that is not used currently is because the restoration of the system is not designed to use the SSD for intelligent caching and is not able to establish that on its own.
    If you want to configure Intelligent caching on your laptop, you can follow this guide provided by overclock.net: how: implement the Intel Smart Response Technology (SSD caching)
    I hope this helps. If you have more questions that I'm able to answer for you, please do not hesitate to ask.
    Please hold me.
    By pressing the Thumbs Up button below, you can always say thank you!
    See you soon.
  • my computer crashed and restored using the system recovery disk. I saved all the files using a .fbw format. I can't read. What should I do?
    My computer crashed while updating. It's a double 4 year old HP desktop processor. I could get into the repair screen, but nothing would be useful. I backed up data (115 GB) using the tools available on a drive hard usb. They are under the folder MINWIN and meet 31 different files. All I get is the demand to put in the disc. I copied the last file on DVD, but it will not read it. All other recovery programs say there is no backup file.
    Help
    Hello
    1. are you able to boot to the desktop now?
    2 have you tried to reinstall the operating system?
    3. what program did you use to create a backup?
    4. do you get an error code or error message?
    According toOberwald, it seems that fbw files are generated by HP, not Vista backup tool. I suggest you to read the following article to restore files from Microsoft.
    Backup and restore: frequently asked questions:
    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows-Vista/back-up-and-restore-frequently-asked-questions
    If you are not able to boot to the desktop, then I would suggest trying the following methods and check if it helps.
    Method 1:
    Start in safe mode and then try to run the restoration of the system to a point before you install the update and check if the problem persists.
    Step 1: Start in SafeMode in Windows 7:
    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows-Vista/start-your-computer-in-safe-mode
    Step 2: System Restore:
    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows-Vista/products/features/system-restore
    Method 2:
    If you used a third-party program, and then try to restore using the same program and check that it works.
    Also check the FAQ from HP or post the question on a forum of HP.
    Hope the information is useful.
  • X1Carbon does not start after restoration of the USB
    I have a new X 1 carbon 3443CTO Win8/64. After the configuration and test, I wanted to give it to one of my users so I did a "factory restore" using recovery media created by following the guides posted here and elsewhere:
    Control the media of Panel\Recovery\create etc.
    Went as expected. When I ran the recovery - I have taken a step further and called Lenovo as the step that calls for repartition disks reported ambiguously: 'No' (keep existing partitions) reported that a partition is not found "required" Yes seemed exaggerated. The tech told me to proceed by Yes.
    Once the recovery is complete - the system has rebooted. Restarted in the Boot Manager - I chose HDD0 and was immediately referred to the Boot Manager. I called Lenovo and referred to my existing case and told me; "Well do it all again" I did. Same result.
    So - I have created another USB key from a whole new 3443cto carbon X 1 and ran in recovery - same result.
    I then created another set of recovery on a new USB - same result media.
    When I access training with Advanced\Command prompt the windows directory, program files, etc are all there, but nothing I do (Ran BCD fix mbr etc.) will only boot disk.
    Any ideas?
    Today, I called Lenovo and the only choice that gave me was back which I guess I do.
    Question - is a downgraded supports or has a return Service support has deteriorated since last year?
    Before leaving the office, I decided to repeat the exercise once more. This time, I used USB 3.0 500 GB drive that I created last night. I ran the option "update files". When he finished the system booted Windows 8 However he presented me with an opportunity to enter a name and a password. The previous credentials did not work, nor null credentials and there is no option to create a new account.
    I have re-run recovery, this time choosing to keep partitions and basically do a factory instead of reformatting redefined and.
    Once completed, the system booted Windows 8 and the possibility to choose the country. At that time, I have dagprogramm off the system. I guess it's back to the new factory.
    My hypothesis is that in the course of the original tent to refresh something has gone wrong with the drive and running BCDedit solved the problem? Who knows?
    In any case-problem solved. What worries me is that never once in 3 calls, I did Lenovo has someone at - he tried to help me solve the problem. I am the author of the decision - I choose servers, desktop computers and laptops. We use Dell servers and desktop computers the Thinkpads for laptops.
    Support IF Lenovo has become this bad, I'll start to buy Dell laptops. I think I have to raise my w/Lenovo support.
    Hello
    Try Firefox Safe mode to see if the problem goes away. Firefox Safe mode is a troubleshooting mode that temporarily disables hardware acceleration, restores some settings and disables add-ons (extensions and themes).
    If Firefox is open, you can restart Firefox Safe mode in the Help menu:
    • Click the menu button
      click Help
      then select restart with disabled modules.
    If Firefox does not work, you can start Firefox in Mode safe as follows:
    • On Windows: Hold down the SHIFT key when you open the desktop Firefox or shortcut in the start menu.
    • On Mac: Hold the option key during the startup of Firefox.
    • On Linux: Exit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run firefox-safe-mode
      (you may need to specify the installation path of Firefox for example/usr/lib/firefox)
    When the Firefox Safe Mode window appears, select "start mode safe."
    If the problem is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, theme or hardware acceleration. Please follow the steps described in the section Troubleshooting extensions, themes and problems of hardware acceleration to resolve common Firefox problems to find the cause.
    To exit safe mode of Firefox, simply close Firefox and wait a few seconds before you open Firefox for normal use again.
    When find you what is causing your problems, please let us know. This might help others with the same problem.
    Sounds like a problem with the recovery disk or the new HARD disk if your computer starts up fine with the old HARD drive...
    In your case before you start a lengthy discussion, you should try a Microsoft Windows disk to install Windows. If he work it seems that only the recovery disk is defective.
