  I'm afraid that the only reliable solution is to add memory. You might have seen in other discussions, some users have been able to install ESXi after a BIOS update for example,..., but with only 2 GB of RAM - even if you are able to install ESXi - you can't do a lot (such as the installation of VMS).

I currently have 8 GB of RAM in my box of ESXi. I have 4 VM with memory assigned as follows: DC - 2 GB, EXCH - 3 GB, DEV - 1.5 GB, WEB - 1.5 GB. I have VMware Tools installed on all guests. Its use on the summary page is between 6.3 and 7.8 GB depending on what I am connected to and what I do. Now for the questions...

  I use a single WD VelociRaptor 300 GB for the virtual machine. It's a pretty good running in an office environment, but there is no match compared to the same simple RAID company. As I understand it, if I add an another VM and take the total allocated more than 8 GB of memory, the hypervisor will be forced to use balloning or start paging on its own. Is this correct? Would it not be better, from the performance perspective, in order to reduce the memory allocated from my current VM is a little to catch an addition VM 1 GB?

• Recommendations of VMware ESXi memory?

  I run a G5 DL380 with 16 GB of RAM.  We have four virtual machines of WIndows with 2 GB assign one, 4 GB full-time assigned each to two others and 5.5 GB assigned to the last.  That leaves 512 MB of left to the service console.  I want to know if this is recommended or if there is a better way to do like sharing memory etc..   Memory allocations (allocation) are the maximum rates of real memory, so that means if the VM needs 4 GB and you allocate 2 that it swap the disk. Granting of 4Gig does not mean this will keep the RAM. If the virtual machine does not use memory, it will be returned to the pool. If you have placed a reservation on the memory, then it will monopolize the memory under contention.

  So every VM requires memory overhead to support hardware virtualization. ~ 100-400 Meg Depending processors etc.

  The best way to allocate memory is to grant what you think will be the absolute max and leave bookings to unlimited for the rental of the virtual machine, the optimizations memory deal with it.
