Convert a physical machine with attached LUN

Hi all

Need to convert a physical server (windows 2003) that has 2 LUNS attached but I'm not shure about the correct procedure to do this.

I think that the two options I have are:

1 stop of the database on the phsysical Server service.

Clon hot server

Map the phsysical (database) LUNS on my esx servers

Add LUNS to the server virtualized with RDM

cold 2 clone the server whose only the operating system disk

Map the phsysical (database) LUNS on my esx servers

Add LUNS to the server virtualized with RDM

This procedure are not? You have no experience on something like that?

Thanks in advance

So it seems that my procedures are 'almost' correct, right?.

Yes

Your suggestion on the subject of convert SAN disk was my first choice, but do not have enough storage available to it virtualizes.

Right, this could be a reason.

Another reason could be the time required for the entire conversion.

The best option I can suggest is to use VMconverter to convert the server and local all disks (excluding the iSCSI LUN) then create a new hard drive for your VM which is of a size equal or superior to your iSCSI storage space.

Configure the iSCSI storage in the virtual machine, and then use a (free) software as Robocopy to copy the files on the new hard disk on your VM.

This process will take only marginally longer than with a VMconverter.

  • Virtualize a physical machine with SAN-attached storage

    Hello

We are looking to virtualize a physical machine in W2k3 with SAN attached storage.  Ideally we would like storage as RDM due to migration, is possible without destroying all the data that is held on this subject?

    TIA

    David

Just use converter for local disks.

Then map your SAN disk to your ESX (masking of storage).

Rescan ESX to see the new LUN (under the storage card).

Finally add the virtual machine to the RDM disk (use virtual mode to use instant VMware).

  • 4 virtual servers in a single physical Machine with a physical LAN card, how possible to assign 4 different unique to each virtual server IP address?

Can someone tell me please, that each server Machine should have an IP address of seprtae to connect the client computers. If we have 4 Server virtual machines in VMware in a physical server with a LAN card with only a MAC address. How can assign us the same IP address to all computers in Virtual Server 4? While we need four IP addresses of different/seprate for each server computer to connect to client computers. can someone explain to me please. (will be greate if you can give me a few examples). Thanks in advance.

You will need four different IP for each virtual machine, and each VM will have a different MAC address generated automatically by vSphere.

Assuming you are using vSphere, I highly recommend you take a look at this document: http://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/virtual_networking_concepts.pdf

  • Convert a physical machine in image

    Hello

I'm currently looking for a solution where I have a few physical machines to Windows 2003. I need to make an image of the machines on a USB drive and then import the image on a VMWare ESXi server on another physical location later.

VMWare converter can only convert directly to an ESX (i) server and not to an image.

Are other solutions that could solve my problem?

    Thanks in advance.

You can use the stand-alone converter to do.

    1. Select the Source Machine

    2. Select destination Type > VMware Workstation or VMware virtual machine

    3. Select the VMware VMware Workstation 8.0 = product

    4. Select a location for the virtual machine > Browse > YOUR USB DEVICE

After this procedure, in another physical location, rerun the converter

    1. Select the Machine Source = VMware Workstation or VMware virtual machine

2 search for a virtual machine image or source > Browse > YOUR USB DEVICE

    3 destination > choice your e.

  • Storage VMotion for a virtual machine with SAN LUNS attached to it. They are all going to?

    Hello

Don't know which section of this post, so sorry if its wrong.

We are eager to Storage VMotion of our SQL VM. These are our SAN 3040 of NetApp. In the virtual machine (windows 2003), they have also connected to the network SAN NetApp 3040 LUN.

What I need to know is, if we tried to do the other (NetApp 3170) SAN Storage VMotion problems due to the fact that its storage not only fast vMotioning of VMs its self, but also the LUN or LUNS will remain on 3040, and the virtual machines moved to the 3170?

    Who is?

If more info should help just shout!

    Cheers in advance...

    RDM's Raw card device.

As I posted earlier, you need to move data to the Raw LUN for LUN Raw new either through data copy inside the VM if you map the new LUNS brutes who him or copy.

When I delete the ethernet controller, install the vmware toolbox (disk is mapped) and check for the ethernet controllers are new hardware installed again unsuccessful. The strange thing is when I install a new virtual machine from scratch, I network

How can I install vmware on my machine replicated network drivers?

    Kind regards

There is no evaluation or trial version! What you download is a normal version of GA fully functional and is no different then if you bought it and using a serial number which never expires or simply by using a serial number which will expire in 30 days.

Attach a copy of the configuration of the VM targer .vmx file and the vmware.log file.

Also check for the existence of the following in the configuration of the VM Windows 7 .vmx file.

    ethernet0.virtualDev = "e1000"

  • Compare the performance of virtual machine using RDM for physical Machine with HBA

With the help of some great users, I recently converted a node of a cluster, MSCS running Server 2003 and SQL 2000 to a virtual machine for the cluster resulting has a physical node and a virtual node using RDM drives. See http://communities.vmware.com/thread/187822 If you're interested.

Now my question revolves around performance. Colleagues who manage programs running on that cluster related that a backup every night a database on the thesystem take 10 minutes on a physical hardware and takes 30 minutes. A restoration took 45 minutes and now takes a little less than three hours. Is this kind of drop in performance to be expected? Is there some specific changes that I can look to improve performance.

The virtual machine works like a single virtual machine on a machine of update3 ESX3.5. ESX server has two processors Quad-cores and 32 GB of ram, 30 GB assigned to the virtual machine.

Any help or pointers to more information would be greatly appreciated.

Check your card vSCSI.  If you P2V'ed, you're likely to have a Buslogic adapter.  The Buslogic adapter will limit the length of the queue 1 and limit the I/O.  Replace with the free and see if that helps you.

  • Need help to start a partition converted previous physical Machine manually in VMDK

I had a problem with a HD that was not in a State of health , I was able to make a backup with Acronis Image Home in time. The backup has been partial, the original disc had 4 partition (3 primary and bootable partitions and a logical partition of data only), it was a Boot Manager to boot Windows 7, Windows Vista respectively (2), WindowsXP (3) (1). I made a backup of the W7 partition and the DATA partition.

I had no need of the old disks of Vista and Windows XP, and that's why I made the partial, not backup to disk backup.

I want to virtualize the old machine. Using VMware vCenter Converter I could not convert the tib file, it gave error, probably because it was only a partial backup of the first and the last partition.

So I have chosen to follow a different path, I mounted the TIB file, which has mounted the two partitions as separate discs, then using Backup of EASE, I made a backup of the first partition (Windows 7) and converted to the VMDK image using VDDK 5.1

Now, I created a 9 VMX (Using VMWARE) Workstation, which asked me to convert the VMDK in version 9.0 (I said NO). I also converts the data partition later.

. Starting the virtual machine, he started for the Boot Manager, but obviously it does not work, no matter what boot option I chose I get this error:

    Status: 0xc000000e

Info: The boot selection failed because a required device is not accessible.

If I remember well using VMware converter, the software takes care of the conversion of the machine as well as pilots of controller used when the machine has been installed on the real hardware.

Now, I need solve this problem and I need advice to do all the steps safe and functional without worries.

Priming for sure and partition table sector must be updated to reflect a disc with only a partition and must also solve the problem of all the drivers installed in the system that could give a problem.

I have the installation DVD of Windows 7 has tried to fix the trunk then now, it identifies and the main C: Partition successfully deleted other references of boot partition. The system seem to start but I got a BSOD:

    Status: 0x0000007B

I think that the problem is related to IDE drivers or something, how do I fix this problem?

    Relok.

Sorry - I'm in a hurry and don't have time for lengthy explanations.
Take a look at my site http://sanbarrow.com/p2v2008r2.html
It has a section "patch - easy alternative."
    This applies to win7, 32 and 64 and 2k8r2

Use a recovery CD if the builtin recovery mode cannot be started.

Also, make sure that your vmx always have lines
    scsi0. Present = 'TRUE '.

    scsi0.virtualDev = "lsisas1068".
  • Cannot virtualize my physical machine with Vista 64-bit

    Hello

This is very similar to the previous discussion...

I built a x 64 bit windows vista from my physical laptop system image.  It is a HP Pavilion DV5-1253 CL model.  I have Windows Vista 64-bit installed on it.

But when I try and either build a new x 64 machine, or try to load this x 64 vm, I have done, I get this:

Software virtualization is incompatible with the long mode on this platform. Long mode off. Without the support of the long mode, the virtual machine will not be able to run 64-bit code.

    What is going on?

If it is not supported, what should I do to get Vista running on it?  I don't have the provider's Setup diskettes.  The OS is on the hard drive in a recovery for purposes of recovery partition.  Do I have to buy a 32-bit HP or elsewhere to make this work?

I looked at the BIOS setting and don't see anything about Virtualization or in long mode.

    Scott

I'm afraid there is Word options available since it is a hardware problem. You must either upgrade the current system with a CPU (most BIOS) that supports VT - x or get a new PC.

To convert Windows 7, you must at least VMware Converter 4.3. However, I would suggest that you use for the last beta 5.0 version http://communities.vmware.com/community/vmtn/beta/public_converter_50?view=overview

  • Convert a physical machine but split to 2 databases

I will migrate a server terminal server for vmware and it has 3 readers a disk C:, D: and E:. I was wondering if anyone knows how to put the C: and D: drive on the data store 1 and the E: running on the data store 2. 1 data store is located on the local computer that esxi is installed on and data store 2 is a NFS share that is located on a NAS. If someone has done or knows how to use vmware converter or any other way made me know thank you.

Using standalone converter, you can choose to put each volume/drive on another store data during conversion.

I think that you must choose Advanced on the part of the data in the wizard store.

  • Convert True64 Unix physical machine into a Virtual Machine

    Hi all

I wonder if I can convert the physical machine with True64 Unix virtual machine or not.

    Server version: AlphaServer 4000/5/300 - Tru64 Unix 4.0 D / TruCluster Ver 5.1

    Can anyone suggest me?

    Thanks in advance!

    Hello

Welcome to the VMware communities forum.

Don't you can't virtualize the machine to the VMware platform.

The reason is that the server uses the alpha microprocessor and not a standard intel x 86/intel x 64 compatible.

You will need to migrate to new hardware or reinstall the server from scratch on a different linux/unix as a platform.

You may be able to migrate the data. It's usually pretty easy on unix-like platforms, but you'd have to testrun this part of course.

    Hope this helps,

We will be upgrading systems VMware communities between December 10-12, 2010. During this time, the system will be placed in READ ONLY mode.
