Convert ESX 3 VMs vSphere 5 mV (Win 2 k 3 STD).

Hello to everyone.  Familiar with ESX 3 but a beginner to vSphere 5.

I have a single host of ESX 3.0 (Yes... he have updated years ago... I don't know) that I am now ready to move VMs from him at our new 5.0 ESXi host (vSphere Essentials so I put my vCenter available now).  My problem is that vSphere converter does not list Win 2003 STD as a compatible host OS... ?  The converter just does not work on a Server 2003 STD or if she isn't just officially supported?  Just one question before I go hunting a herring-saur.

Also, if anyone knows a set of documents or a path to do this conversion, I appreicate a pointer in the right direction.

Thanks in advance!

Clark

I assume you are talking about http://www.vmware.com/support/converter/doc/conv_sa_50_rel_notes.html#guestos

Windows Server 2003 SP2, R2 (32-bit and 64-bit)

This means that Windows 2003 with SP2 and R2 are supported.

  • Convert/export Workstation to Vsphere?

I don't know if this is the proper forum for this.

I have a v7 Vmware Workstation WITH 1 instant machine I want to export so that I can run in Vsphere 4.1

There is a vmware KB article:

Export of VMS in VMware Workstation to ESX

(I don't have the KB # because it is not print)

In any case, this means that you can do this WITH snapshots (I blieve this is point 5).

Now, if I use the instructions, it will fail with 'comments unsupported OS' (SLES 11 64-bit in this case).  For some weird reason.  If I adjust the "OS" type in vmware workstation so that there 'another 64 - bit', then convert it.

But it does not in the snapshot.

Unfortunately, I need to bring during the snapshot.

But I see a completely Ko diff, which indicates that you CAN use the converter with snapshots.

    So what KB's right?

Import a VM WS with snapshots on ESX (i) AND by keeping the snapshots is not supported by any version of the converter.

If a KB is claiming that this is possible, it should be fixed.

However, you might think of ways to do it manually - but the effort would be significant - nothing that could be done with a procedure ' click here / click here.
I would consider rather to create two or more different VMs

  • Convert ESX 3.5 in 4.1 virtual machines

    Hello

I want to migrate from ESX 3.5 to vSphere 4.1. I need to convert a virtual machine or can I just copy them?

    Sorry for my bad English.

ESXi 4.x supports hardware version 4 virtual machines in order to run virtual machines hosted on your system without modifications 3.5.  It's a good idea to update the VMware Tools after you migrate the virtual computer and if you want to take advantage of the functionality 4.1 you can update the hardware virtual machine (for version 7) once you have migrated the.  You can run machines virtual version 7 on ESX 3.5.

  • How to add in DVS ESX hosts with vsphere SDK for perl?

    Hello

I am a newbie to vsphere SDK for perl. Just started using it for automation of one month back. , I was looking for options to automate the addition of ESXi servers and their physical cards in the distributed virtual switch. I got some details on how to add using powerCLI. However, my requirements are in the use of vsphere SDK for perl. Any help would be appreciated.

Have we not like subroutines or plug editable in vsphere SDK for perl inorder to add host ESX in DVS. ?
    Thank you and best regards,
    Lebou

You can certainly do it in Perl.  I don't have a working example, but perhaps that William will be when he catches this thread

If I have time tomorrow, I'll try to put something together to help you get started, but you can also simply map the logic of LucD script.

Basically Get - view is equivalent to Vim: get_view() and New-Object calls should be mapped to the type of object in Perl, for example, instead of VMware.Vim.DVSConfigSpec New-Object, we $spec = DVSConfigSpec-> (again).

  • Recommendation for disaster recovery on the spot for a single server ESX from VMware vSphere 4?

I'm exploring setting up a new Dell server running ESX 4 vSphere VWware and wonder what is a good solution to allow a recovery solution disaster on-site in the event of complete failure of the server?  At the very least, I think that I would need a server similar to the site, but not sure if vCenter or what solution would allow the ability to quickly recover virtual machines, I had running on this single server?

    Thank you

Only for simple cases of storage shared. Veeam does not free ESXi support, but you can actually buy vSphere Essentials (3 guests more a vCenter) for a total of $ 500.

Create new role with stock / VM only create rights and assign this role to the user on the data center level without spread.

  • Restore (1:1 copy) all ESX without VMs on other machine

    Hello

We use 12.0 Backup Exec For Windows Servers , and we saved the whole ESX3.5 without virtual machines using RALUS.

HOWTO (1:1 copy) to restore the entire ESX on another machine (the same material)?

Should I install first default ESX installation and try to restore using Backup Exec?

    What partitions?

We would like to have the same partitions on the other server.

    Hello

No idea. Never has undertaken research for her. Consider the following:

Duration of the period to restore backup? 30-60 minutes

Length of time from scratch with a good documentation and config script? 10-20 minutes

As it is very quick and easy to install just and config, I never considered the VMware ESX operating system restore. Its virtual machines you want to restore not ESX. In addition, ESX is material specific to given. You can restore to different hardware and things wouldn't work, especially virtual network configurations. It is the best practice from scratch and use a run book or script to perform configurations.

I am in the final stages of planning for my upgrade from 3.5 to 4.1.  My only is the question in abeyance for the moment, she is sure to have my current 3.5 servers and my new 4.1 server points to the same SAN LUNS?  Everything I read leads me to believe that it should be fine, since the VMFS format is the same between versions, but I'd rather be safe than sorry.

    Thank you.

Should be fine since the two using the same version of VMFS. The only thing you might want to include is, virtual hardware version (4 and 7). Once you upgraded to version 7, you will not be able to run the version 7 VM on 3.5 hosts more.

  • Conversion of 4i VMs on ESX 3.5 ESX

We are preparing to install ESXi on a new Dell R710 server. We have 3 guests ESX 3.5 running in production. I am trying to decide whether to install ESXi 3.5 or ESXi 4. We want virtual machines that are running on the ESXi box to migrate ESX 3.5 cluster if necessary. I looked the Converter release notes and sees no ESXi as a platform to source converter supported. He said vSphere 4, but I wasn't as sayint that esxi 4 has been supported.

So... If we want configuration VMs on our ESXi host and migrate running on ESX 3.5, should we simply install ESXi 3.5 or can converter downgrade our VMS in ESXi 4 ESX 3.5.

Let me know what your experiences have shown you.

    Thanks, Aubrey

So... If we want configuration VMs on our ESXi host and migrate running on ESX 3.5, should we simply install ESXi 3.5 or can converter downgrade our VMS in ESXi 4 ESX 3.5.

ESXi is a supported source and destination for VMware Converter.  When we support "ESX" This includes ESXi and "ESX Classic" people have come to know.

In regards to moving between versions... If you use vCenter 4.0 to manage these hosts, you can migrate them using the context Menu option "migrate."

The only restriction is to ensure that all virtual machines are built to specifications ESX 3.5.  i.e. vHardware 4 and no. thin disks.

    Kind regards
