Curiosities: what happens if I restart the NFS server?

Hi guys,.

I use Linux as a NFS data store. I'm just curious, regularly there as updates of the kernel, etc. that requires a reboot. What happens if I restart the NFS server without:

1. turn off the virtual machine on it

2. without disconnecting the ESXi host data store

What is the proper way to restart the NFS server?

Thanks ^^

If you mean 'a good' (without no timeout error appears in the log), then delete NFS datastore is the whole procedure before you restart the NFS server. Unlike datastore VMFS, by removing the NFS datastore, that this will not completely remove the storage at all, instead you only remove it from the ESX host and you can reconnect the NFS mounting even whenever you want.

    Hello

Since you say that it works perfectly in safe mode, I think that there is a problem with a driver or an application causing this boot loop.
Please see this thread with details exactly what a clean boot is and how to use it to solve the problems of this kind. The idea behind a clean boot is to identify the exact cause of the problem so that we can fix or remove the troubled application.
  • What happens IF we replace the default certificates for vCenter 5.1?

Does anyone have specific vmware documents indicating what happens IF we replace the default certificates for vCenter 5.1 SSO, inventory, Web Client etc... services?

I found this below at page 19 of https://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/products/vCenter/VMware-vCenter-Server-Single-Sign-On.pdf

    Certificates update

When you install the vCenter Single Sign-On, each component that registers with it - including

vCenter Single Sign-On himself - uses SSL to communicate between components and saved solutions.

By default, SSL certificates are generated automatically by VMware installation and upgrade process

and are sufficient for the operational security for most VMware customers.

Some clients prefer to use their own self-signed or purchased SSL certificates. A tool has been developed to

help the insertion of these certificates after vCenter Server installation. Because of the additional knowledge

required to create and install self-signed certificates, we recommend that you review the following knowledge of VMware

    basis of articles:

"Deployment and using the tool to automate SSL certificate.

    (VMware 2041600 knowledge base article)

"Generation of certificates for use with the VMware Certificate SSL automation tool"

    (VMware 2044696 knowledge base article)

In 10 years your vCenter starts (because of expiry of the certificate).

Your users will see pesky warnings of SSL certificate when connecting components.

Apart from that all traffic is always secure and encrypted with certificates by default, you have simply a chain of trust for them.

  • VMware converter restarts the physical server after cold clone

    Hey

This can already city, but I can't find any discussion about it. I do a few P2Vs using the bootable disk to Vmware converter 4.1.0 cold clone. We have not all KVM/IP switches, I visit the server room to check the status of the conversion. The problem I have is that once the converter is completed, it randomly restarts the physical server, I converted (does not seem to happen to any of them). Of course, I don't want the physical server switch on again as changes could be made to it. I don't see any option in the converter to tell him not to restart or even stop that would be ok?

Has anyone encountered this problem and maybe a solution?

    See you soon

This is a very dirty hack that will do what you want

Edit the coldclone.iso and delete the file... \I386\bootfix.bin.

If you delete this file from the CD will not be asked to "press any key to boot from the CD" - instead, it will always start in the CD.

So this also means you must change the boot sequence for the physical machine BIOS to boot from the CD-ROM.

Then - even if the CD Coldclone restarts for unknown reasons - it will never restart under the original system, but raise the CD.

  • VMware converter restarts the physical server after conversion!

    Hello

This can already city, but I can't find any discussion about it. I do some V2Vs using the converter Vmware 4.1.0

The problem I have is that once the converter is completed, it randomly restarts the physical server, I converted (does not seem to happen to any of them). Of course, I don't want the physical server switch on again as changes could be made to it. I don't see any option in the converter to tell him not to restart or even stop.  It's a VtoV.  He is a SQL Server. Windows 2003 64-bit.

I try without shutting down the server at all because it's a production server.  I don't have a Vcenter (to copy to an esxi to an another esxi).

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Hello

For sure in the Converter 4 there is an option for the source stop server after migration.

Below you will find a screen of VMware converter 5 with the option you are looking for. It is available at the end of the migration Assistant in OPTION --> option advance section

  • A solution to the "unable to connect to the NFS server" that I can't understand

(This question is related to the interaction between ESXi and FreeNAS and talk a lot here, but the solution was finally on FreeNAS configuration change, so I hope it's ok that I post in this forum.  It relates to the use of FreeNAS of ESXi).

I have a FreeNAS system set up specifically for the copy of the virtual machines of my ESXi server as a backup mechanism.  I tried to mount a NFS of FreeNAS disk and ran in a (what appears to be, from discussions on the forum, a common place) problem.  ESXi, during an attempt fix the part gave me the "unable to connect to the NFS server" message.  The search in the log files, I could see some more detail, but nothing that pointed to a solution.  I also searched the logs on the FreeNAS system, nothing helps.

I was using the IP address of the FreeNAS (static address) system instead of the DNS name when you are trying to reach the storage.

After hours of trying different methods, creation of username on FreeNAS trying up to ESXi, scouring through all the various points of ESXi config, etc. I am getting nowhere.  Then I came across a post somewhere (not here on the forums, but in a blog somewhere) that said add the ESXi server to the hosts on the FreeNAS system file.

Once we added - bingo-test.  ESXi logged in straight away and I am running.

Now, I am trying to determine why the addition of ESXi machine to the FreeNAS hosts file would allow ESXi to connect.  Anyone have any ideas?  The IP address of the ESXi system was already in the allowable range set up in the UI on FreeNAS.

    Thanks in advance.

Mounting NFS export list process requires the resolution of the customer's name. When a customer initiates the request for an NFS share, server checks its list of export for the requested directory and the name of the customer in this access list for this particular action. Now if the server fails to resolve the name of the initiator denies his request for the mounting of this share. In order to overcome this problem, you must have a dns server in the network, or do you have enter you the names and information of IP address to the server hosts file

  • What happened to my system, the automatic updates has been interrupted.

It was September 28, 2009. I was surfing the net and 24 updates automatic updates downloaded - I think - and updated my genuine Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium OS when my connection and I was disconnected. The update, then stopped to 68% or something... After that, I turned off my laptop. While I stop, the updates INSTALLED themselves so I just let it happen. Then after that I turned on my laptop again. But instead to display the log on screen, it showed a dialogue (with the same background as the log on screen) who says:

    «Configuring updates: step 1 of 3 XX % (2/3, 3/3)»
Please don't turn off your computer.

. on the third phase (3 of 3) he has just reached 92% then showed another dialogue box "Shutting Down". After that it just rebooted and the process goes on again and again. Now I can't connect to my laptop. What can I do?
I do not reformat... Help, please... the recovery is safe?

I have a MSI X 310 for computer pc laptop. with integrated Windows Vista operating system.

    Hi Joel,

Thanks for posting on the Community Forums of Microsoft Vista.

Try to start the computer in safe mode and check if installation is complete. To start in SafeMode to restart the computer and keep pressing the F8 key. Once you see the safe mode option select it and press ENTER.

Once you're in safe mode, you try to restore system to a previous date when the computer was working fine.

To restore the operating system to an earlier point in time, follow these steps:

    1. Click Start, type system restore in the search box, and then click System Restore in the list programs.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type your password or click on continue.

    2. in the System Restore dialog box, click on choose a different restore point and then click Next.

    3. in the list of restore points, click a restore point created before you started having the problem, and then click Next.

    4. click on finish.

The computer restarts and system files and settings are back to the State they were in when the restore point was created.

Access the link below for more information about the system restore.

    It will be useful.

  • What happens if I delete the files in the Temp folder in Windows 7?

What is happening in the windows--> Temp folder in windows 7, and if I delete the files there, that will be a problem?  I want to free up the disk space of 1.8 G, but can't find any info anywhere of the consequences of deleting these files, what they are for, or how they got there.  Thank you!

In general, it is safe to delete anything in the Temp folder.  Sometimes, you can get a "Cannot be deleted because the file is in use" message, but you can just ignore these files.

For safety, do your Temp directory deletion right after you restart the computer.  Sometimes a program installer will put something in the Temp directory it needs to complete the installation after a reboot.  If you restart and wait a bit so that they were, whatever left in the Temp folder should be OK to delete it.

If you want to be conservative, use the built-in Disk Cleanup tool (type of cleaning disc in the search box).  If you select "Temporary files" as one of the elements to clean (deleted), by default, that Disk Cleanup removes only the files that have not changed in 7 days.

  • HA 5.0 - what happens if not all the VMs of high priority start?

If you are using vSphere 5.0 with the new HA and I have selected for example 10 virtual machines with a high priority and the rest with a way by default, then after failing the medium priority VMs should not start until all the high VMs have been restarted.

However, if for any reason a priority high THAT VM does not start - what will happen with the environment? They will wait forever or is there any time-out value that will allow them to get actually?

Also, if all the high VMs restart successfully, when are usually begun average VMs? Is there any time or similar value that governs this?

Prior to 5.0, HA will re-start all virtual machines more or less at the same time. The priority of restarting been really used only to decide _which_ vms to failover if there are not enough resources to restart all the. In 5.0, HA will restart all virtual machines of high priority before starting to restart more low priority vms. This ranking is only with respect to the operation 'turned on. As soon as all virtual machines of high priority are turned on, HA will increase to restart the Middle, then the vms of priority below. High-priority virtual machines can still be booting virtual machines of medium priority starting power. Once HA has restarted VMS high priority it passes immediately to lowest priority those - it does not wait for 30 seconds. And as already mentioned, this ranking is only for initial failover attempt. If some high priority vm fails to failover for a reason, HA will not until failover of VMS of lower priority if the retry of the high-priority virtual computer restarts may occur during or after the lower priority vms are be toggled.
