Dell PowerEdge T20: Hard drives

Hi, I'll build a MS SQL Server for a small lab. I chose the Dell PowerEdge T20 Spec1-T20-004 configuration server. And I want to use two additional 5 TB in RAID1 disks. Since all the documents, I found from dell (including telephone support) they only sell/pick-up drives up 3TO. I don't...

Dell would have sold the T20 with only up to 3 TB of disk. Any modern system supports over 2 TB disks (no currently achievable limit does exist on modern Intel SATA controllers).

Thus, 2 to 5 discs should not be a problem. Note that unless you add a raid controller, at best you might be able to run firmware raid (supported by Windows and Linux, maybe, but not things like BSD or VMware or more).

If you plan to run the raid software, then obviously just about any OS should work with it.

the current RAID is RAID 0 and I found that a backup windows (from previous system admin) file so it is possible to format the two HDD, configure RAID for RAID 1, install windows, and then restore the backup?

also, I was reading this article " " but I couldn't change the RAID, so any suggestion?

You need drivers ("hard drive" version, run to extract before use):

  • Updated Dell C640 laptop hard drive

    Hello

I have a laptop Dell C640 with a 30 GB hard drive in it I want to improve.

I'm looking to install a hard disk of 160 Go in there and have a few questions.

I have located the hard drive and knows how to get it out but I was wondering if I could just copy my drive C everything on my external hard drive, remove the old hard drive, install a new one. Then boot up my laptop to my external hard drive and when loading upward just copy and paste the contents of the C drive on the new drive and all works normally when I disconnect the external hard drive?

    Your help is greatly appreciatted.

Simply copy the files will not work. You need either to CLONE the drive or make a disk IMAGE and then later RESTORE that image.

Fortunately, your new hard drive will almost certainly come with cloning software. Just follow these instructions. After the back if you need assistance.
  • Dell XPS 410 HARD drive has been reformatted accidentally.

HARD drive has been reformatted accidentally. I'm not interested in the stored data, I want to just go back to the factory settings.  Operating system is Vista.

    Thanks for any advice.

You will need the recovery media you do when you received the system - attach the flash drive or insert the first disk in the backup media, power and press F12.  Start since the media and follow the prompts to reload the factory software image.

If you do not prepare a media defined in advance, you will need to contact the customer service Dell to buy a game now - they are in fact not able to provide Windows Vista at this stage.

  • Dell Inspiron 3520 - hard drive failure - how to install Windows 8 on the new hard drive

I bought Dell Inspiron 3520. My hard drive has stopped working completely. It was stated as dead hard drive by diagonstic center.

I have now bought a new hard drive but have lost data and windows 8 preload on the original hard drive. Dell did not provide any recovery disk for Windows 8 pre-loaded on portable hard drive. How can I then install windows 8 / 10 on my new hard drive?

The .iso image file official 10565 has only:

    • Overview of the House of insiders
    • Overview of the Insider Pro

Unfortunately, there are 5 editions of Windows 10 and so 3 are missing. If your key is not automatically entered and accepted, it's probably a simple language edition or edition N.

When Microsoft release 10586 - TH2 - 1511 Version they will probably have an .iso that contains all 5 editions in 1 .iso or alternatively 5 .isos distinct (I hope as the first case that it will make Windows installation much easier).

  • My Dell XPS 8300 hard drive fails? Intel Rapid Storage detects the error when starting upwards.

My computer (dell xps 8300) has recently frozen and when it restarts it scored one of my RAID 0 hard drives as being a mistake. Surprisingly, my computer still works as always and after an investigation, I traced the gel to vuze trying to check a file after he was already down. I deleted the files causing the freeze and have not yet encountered any more freezing problems. But I'm still very worried, so I ran a disk check, who quickly said the disc is clean, and I also ran tests HD (Long & short) dell support center several times and they always say that readers are working properly. Today, I ran a checkdisk windows another who had a lot more time but seem to come clean. But to restart the computer disk was marked later once again as being a mistake. So I ran the tests of short and long and difficult road dell support center, once again, and the sound still saying everything is working properly. I then decided to try to start some other diagnostics of hard disk: seagate seatools and rescuer of Western Digital. The player has passed the tests of the Seatool, but almost immediately failed the tests of rescuer WD giving the error that there are too many bad sectors. Any advice on how to proceed would be much appreciated!

Lack of an operating system is the message you get when in fact there is a properly peripheral storage seen by your BIOS, but it is not a valid partition with a valid boot sector table.

I fear that you may have installed the operating system on a RAID-0 configuration and only now try to start from one half of the band?  Yes, you can WD 500 GB RAID-0 an and a 1 TB Seagate together.  It would be foolish (same capacity as a single player, but all the falls of RAID-0) but the computer doesn't know any better.

The RAID configuration (breaking apart the RAID) must arrive before the installation of the o/s.  The RAID/mobo card is one of the early stages of the process, he takes these 2 physical disks and mounted as a storage to the motherboard, allowing it to boot from it etc.

No matter what is happening currently, my advice would be to remove the RAID from the system discs.  You don't want a broken drive / failure connected, even if you do not use it because the computer will continue to warn / complain the RAID broke, the startup BIOS will be keep showing you a disc is seen mistakes SMART, and finally the failed drive can degrade to the point it actually damage something.

  • Dell N5050 - new hard drive, no WiFi

Just installed a new hard drive in a N5050 Dell laptop. I have no WiFi signal and the antenna is running. I guess that I have not installed a driver or something. I have the CD Driver provided with the laptop originally. There are only 2 choices for drivers. On East Realtek RTL81XX PCI - E card WLAN - I installed but it seems that this is not a wireless driver. It keeps saying that I have a loose cable. The other on the CD is 1525 Wireless Atheros WLAN Mini Card computers desktop, but when I try to install this one I get an error of installation DW: Setup cannot run on this platform. Please select package for your operating system. Should which driver I?

Hi all, hey just a note to say I've set. Since she had no internet signal I have download the drivers on a memory stick and then try to install on the laptop, but I kept getting errors in digital signature. What I ended up doing was restarted the laptop and press F8 to keep me my Start menu. Once there, I disabled the verification of signature. Rebooted and then the pilot had worked. Once I had a driver to work, I was able to connect to Dell, enter the number of my service and it looked all good drivers I need and install. After this, I restarted and press F8 and reactive the verification of digital signatures. It now works like a charm. Might have been a long journey around him, but I'm back in business. Thanks for all the ideas, they have certainly helped.

  • PowerEdge 2900 hard drive upgrade

Am trying to upgrade and back a DPE2900 that was dropped on my knees together.

Ive replaced the two power supplies.

    DPE2900 2nd gen, W2008 R2 server OS, PERC5i, YM-158MBo, 16 GB of RAM.

I'm looking for input on the feasibility of the following:

8 - WD60EFRX red WD 6 TB IntelliPower 64 MB Cache SATA 6.0 GB/s 3.5 "Bare hard drive NAS RAIN 10 disks for storage.

2 - WD Re WD5003ABYZ 500 GB 7200 RPM 64 MB Cache SATA 6.0 GB / s 3.5 "Datacenter capacity hard drive internal bare drives in RAID 1 for operating system.

I also need to find the Bay of Flex 1 x 2 and wiring for this upgrade.

All comments and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hello. Unfortunately, the PERC 5i does not support 2 TB + drives, so this won't work. We also recommend the use of certified Dell discs to ensure communication also own firmware.

The modular Bay 1 x 2 are on the web by many third party retailers. Check that you are getting all 3 cables that should come with the modular Bay.

Please let us know if that helps.

  • Cannot add ESX/PowerEdge 2950 hard drive

Hello..  I have a Dell PowerEdge 2950 with a Perc6 / i.  I am currently under VMWare ESX 3.5i using RAID 5.  I added another drive and try to add that, for VMWare.  Looking at the sensors, the UNCONFIGURED GOOD watch drive.  When I try to add through VIC using storage - & gt; Add storage, the disk is not there.  I looked everywhere to try to add this drive but its got the best of me.  What I am doing wrong?

Ideally, I would like to add to the RAID 5 array, but from what I've read is not possible.  Suffice to just be able to add the period dang by car.

    Help!

    -st

The boot server and press Ctrl + R and go to group configuration, look at the table manager and add the new virtual disk. Don't try to split the table 5 in place or you may lose your data.

  • PowerEdge T310 Hard Drives die!

I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this problem or something similar:

We have about 100 of T310 in production running with RAID configuration mirrored (Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 hosts - they are obviously not 2012 because this RAID "Controller" does not support the server 2012 and will never be according to a Dell representative with whom I spoke). This is the RAID software built into the BIOS (PERC S100 I think) or whatever for Windows (not sure if it works with other OS?). I'm certainly not an expert on this particular RAID "Controller", but I'm having a bad experience with it or with hard drives that provides Dell. Now until someone enters the speech 'you get what you pay for', I am quite aware of this, especially at this time. Here is the situation that we face. We have 2 servers at each of our branches, and each server has 2 discs. That's a total of about 200 hard drives. Currently, 50 of these 200 readers are omitted. Normally, I would not worry. See, the subject of a RAID is used to provide tolerance of the redundancy and fault when one (or more) disk fails. Then... I should be able to just stop the server, pop another drive, hop on Dell Server Admin and rebuild the RAID, right? NOPE! Here are the results of the last 6 attempts of service with gradient records machines:

3 servers never started upward after be closed (two physical disks mirrored in a failed State)
3 servers booted up back but the RAID rebuild failed because of too many errors on the remaining drive

Now, these servers are not THAT old. In fact, some of those who have placed disks have in production since a little over a year. It does not matter if there is dust in the computer; We had total failure on machines with ZERO dust inside or on the readers. Supplier of readers also doesn't seem like some are Seagate and Western Digital are of importance. Now, I do speak not only on disks that has been corrupted and could be reformatted. I mean they stop actually spinning (think click of death most of the time). Embarrassing enough, I have to admit there are a few cases where I could slap a sense in them (literally - yes I actually physically struck against a hard surface readers and they have began to turn again, at least enough to recover virtual machines).

Now, I went to the bottom of the avenue to try to set up alerts via Server Admin but I noticed that, in our case, the events in the log do not always indicate the drive failure and don't seem to even not always detect the degraded state of the virtual disk (actually, a failed drive is often reported as being in a "ready" State) ", apparently thrown out of the RAID as a renounced child). This means I can't rely on that as a solution. But, well, that's all beside the point... We decided to replace the drives in servers with a single solid state (System of the pair of two servers at each location actually provide redundancy anyway and we were to replace servers at locations where both servers have degraded virtual disks to prevent total failure). No RAID means that we can at least go ahead with Server 2012 and get out a few more years of life of our T310.

I recognize and I probably shouldn't be, that we have absolutely not been diligent to keep the firmware up-to-date (Yes, SHAME ON US, I know...)

Anyway, enough with my history of sobbing and my expert "data medico-techniques"... sharing I'm just curious to know if anyone else has had negative experiences similar to mine. I might also note that we had problems of disk failure with a lot of recent desktop models that use the same drives that come with the T310. I thought it also interesting that we have a couple of T110 out there who are both much older than that of the T310 and have never had a disk failure (keeping my fingers crossed). It's just a shame that we have a few desktop computers (Dimension 3000) who worked for 7 years with their original hard disks and in general, we get no more than 1-2 (maybe 3) years with the things they've been giving us lately. They just don't make em like they did I guess! Anyway, thanks in advance for your time!

    > if anyone else has had negative experiences similar to mine

As a TECHNOLOGY company, we ended up with two T310s in the field before we realized what the S in front of the model number.  A PERC, a software controller had never been in the past, and we didn't expect the default controller for a small business server with SAS 15 K of Dell discs would be.  Of the two, the two had a drive replaced in their bays.  The servers were under warranty, all two S300 controllers and both have been only less than two years.  When talking with Dell technicians, they were very skeptical that readers actually had a problem.  Before we did anything, they wanted the drivers and firmware for controllers and disks up to date.  Then after several attempts, they decided to try a car and if it does not, try a controller.  Is not big thing to inspire confidence.  If you read the questions, you will be fine is based their concern about the false reports.

The next issue focuses on hard drives.  It's easy.  This is because the readers never get a rest.  Unlike with a hardware controller, the drives are insanely busy all the time.  Give up the collar and watch.

Another problem is the only work of S controllers with Windows.  This may look like a small point, that this is not the case.  This means that backup software top of range such as ShadowProtect, IMPOSSIBLE to restore your system in case of failure, only the Microsoft Windows backups can.  Fear that you get the idea that you could do with Windows PE, I have news for you, it does not work.  They have no drivers that will load with it.  Dell has no apologies for the S controller if you enter in this situation.  It also means that many partitioning utilities do not work because most are? nix based.  In addition, recovery tools do not work for the same reason.

I hope to spend the first of our T310s in the field in a H700 this weekend, and another after the tax season for another client who does not know yet what is to come.
