DEP problem

I have Vista 64 bit machine and when I tried to install a game, I came across a DEP problem which I fixed it by putting a check in the "enable DEP for all programs and services except those I select:
I ran the game without any problems for 2 weeks or more.
But now, when I try to start the game, I get the same error DEP. So I went back to system properties and the area of the DEP performance options and I no longer have the choice of checking or unchecking, the two options in the Data Execution Prevention tab are grayed out.
Any idea what I can then?
Thanks, Dave

Hello HarryMudd,

Please use the Microsoft Answers form.  The link below describes DEP and has options you can try.

    Hi bspack12,

    1. you receive messages or error codes?

Data Execution Prevention (DEP) is a security feature of Windows, tracks how programs use memory. If DEP finds memory used incorrectly, DEP closes the program and let you know.

    Step 1:

Try the following steps to turn off DEP for iTunes and check if you open iTunes.

    a. open system by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking system and Maintenance, and then click System.

    b. click on advanced system settings.  If you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

    c. running, click settings.

    d. click the Data Execution Prevention tab and then click on turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select.

    e. restart and see if it is resolved.

  • How to solve the problems of DEP IE

DEP PROBLEMS Internet Explorer keeps closing

Just thought that I will answer my original message as no one has come back with a solution. I discovered that this seems to happen more often if I don't let the site download completely before closing it - in other words, when I decide that it is not the site I want to see. If I wait for everyone to download, I don't get the message of the DEP.

  • Turn off DEP in hardware

I have a HP Pavilion dv9000 running Vista Home Premium SP1.  I'm trying to remove Norton Internet Security in order to install a different virus program.
Uninstall Microsoft immediately blocked and uninstalling Norton works partially before stopping with a message that it has been terminated by the DEP.
I ran the prompt for the value of nx AlwaysOff, restarted and confirmed the code SupportPolicy = 0.
Rerun the tool Norton plant yet.
Should I turn off DEP at the hardware level - this possible?
    Thanks for any advice.

    Hello

Disable, not uninstall, all the components of Norton, including all startup entries, services (use of msconfig for it) and restart. Once disabled, you should be able to uninstall components without DEP problems, because the software will be more active.

On the DV9000 series, I do not believe that the BIOS supports in all cases turn off DEP at the hardware level. Good luck, Rick Rogers, aka "Crazy" - Microsoft MVP http://mvp.support.microsoft.com Windows help - www.rickrogers.org

Sometimes I would be considered sober...  I'll try to work in some chatter as soon as POSSIBLE.

Here's my standard order to determine the DEP from the Explorer errors:

Note that as I collect things that people tell me cause their DEP problems (I add them at the bottom), it seems that you can get one of these... :)  You can consider ditching McAfee - at least temporarily, to use their tool and uninstall instructions official:

    http://service.McAfee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?ID=TS100507

Don't forget to restart later and test.

You can always reinstall McAfee later if you feel compelled to do it, right?

When the Windows Explorer (not Internet Explorer) is wrong (especially when right click), begin to suspect third-party add-ons explore extension.

Those who would be the Explorer extensions that do not belong to Microsoft.  This means that extensions that you have added.  Solution Explorer extensions are generally well and installation of certain applications will install extensions from Explorer solutions for you, give you a choice and sometimes they can be added without your knowledge when you install the new software.

Solution Explorer extensions are sometimes added as a new right-click option, you see on folders and files (like the scan of this file, open that file, play this song...).

If there is something in particular that you do during exploration that you know will be the cause of the problem, which will help focus on the problem and the help that you suddenly know, when you have found and corrected.  If you can get there when you want it, make an adjustment and then there is no message the next time you don't do anything, you do, you have found and corrected.

First of all you need a way to see what modules explore you have installed now and a way to turn them off (not uninstall them) so you can understand that we are at the origin of the problem.  You can have a lot of extensions not installed Microsoft don't even know you about.

Download ShellExView here to see what Explorer extensions you have loaded:
    http://www.NirSoft.NET/utils/shexview.html

ShellExView does not install anything on your computer, simply of runs and displays.

After launching ShellExView, under Options, choose "Mark non-Microsoft Extensions" and extensions not Microsoft will be pink, clear, but on some systems which is a difficult color to see, so click on display, choose the columns and move the column Microsoft closer to the top, so you can see on your screen without having to scroll left and right.

Click on the column header for Microsoft sort display (by clicking on the column of Microsoft) then all the non Microsoft extensions are on top and easy to see.

Non-Microsoft extensions would be things you have added (non-Microsoft) and are what you should be suspect.

You can also Google the name of a suspect add-on and see if there is any success on the mistakes of the DEP and what other people have done about it.
    You can Google something like:

Explorer XP crashing (you must fill in the name of add your suspect on.)

See what kind of search results hits you get and are looking for solutions or situations that sound like yours.

I'm not a defender of trial and error, but I can't think of another way to do...

Right click and disable the non Microsoft extensions one at a time (or maybe in groups of 3-5 at a time), keep a list, so you can enable them again later if you wish. The result of the change is immediate and no reboot is necessary.  Test your failure condition.  If the Explorer starts to behave, you will know that an extension of this group of 3-5 is the culprit in order to start to enable them one by one until the Explorer fails again.

If you recognize all the extensions that have been added or recently downloaded, start with these first.

Don't forget - disabling the extension does not uninstall the extension - it is just disabled so you can always turn it on again.

Disable them one at a time until your right click on do not generate an error, then restart and test again.  You have disabled the last extension would be suspicious.

You can also just disable all non-Microsoft extensions, restart and allow them one at a time until you find the one that generates the condition.

If you have a large number of extensions, you can disable them is small groups, 3-5 at a time instead of 1 at a time until your system starts to behave.  When it does not, you will know that the problem is one of the extensions of this small group and you can enable members of the Group at a time until the problem returns, then the problem is with the last extension that you enabled.

The hope is that you will find an extension that caused the error, and then you can figure out what on this subject - either uninstall it or see if you can get an update of the author of the extension of their web page.

I have not your problem, but I can when you toggle extensions, the extension is immediately disabled, so disable an extension does not seem to require a restart, but if you think that you have found the problem, I reboot and repeat the test in any case to be sure the problem disappeared.

If you post your non-Microsoft extensions list, maybe someone will recognize it as a potential problem.

If you find the offending extension that's the problem, please let us know what it is that I can add to my list.

Some I know not: menu popup "CtxMenu Class" in the context of McAfee VirusScan menu.

PowerDesk ZIP Extension was a culprit
    PowerDesk v7.x was a culprit

PowerDesk 6 and 7 will crash Explorer if certain versions of Norton installed.

    Hello

Don't forget to check with the Game Maker support and ask in their forums known issues
as others have probably experienced similar problems.

    =====================================================================

It is a fairly complete general performance convenience store that should help in the
issue. Use the startup clean and other methods to see if you can identify the cause and/or
    eliminate the problem.

What antivirus/antispyware/security products do you have on the machine? Be one you have NEVER
on this machine, including those you have uninstalled (they leave leftovers behind which can cause
    strange problems).

    ----------------------------------------------------

    Follow these steps:

Vista and Windows 7 updated drivers love then here's how update the most important.

This is my generic how updates of appropriate driver:

This utility, it is easy see which versions are loaded:

-Free - DriverView utility displays the list of all device drivers currently loaded on your system.
For each driver in the list, additional useful information is displayed: load address of the driver,
Description, version, product name, company that created the driver and more.
    http://www.NirSoft.NET/utils/DriverView.html

For drivers, visit manufacturer of emergency system and of the manufacturer of the device that are the most common.
Control Panel - device - Graphics Manager - note the brand and complete model
your video card - double - tab of the driver - write version information. Now, click on update
Driver (this can do nothing as MS is far behind the certification of drivers) - then right-click.
Uninstall - REBOOT it will refresh the driver stack.

Repeat this for network - card (NIC), Wifi network, sound, mouse, and keyboard if 3rd party
with their own software and drivers and all other main drivers that you have.

Now in the system manufacturer (Dell, HP, Toshiba as examples) site (in a restaurant), peripheral
Site of the manufacturer (Realtek, Intel, Nvidia, ATI, for example) and get their latest versions. (Look for
BIOS, Chipset and software updates on the site of the manufacturer of the system here.)

Download - SAVE - go to where you put them - right click - RUN AD ADMIN - REBOOT after
    each installation.

Always check in the Device Manager - drivers tab to be sure the version you actually install
presents itself. This is because some restore drivers before the most recent is installed (sound card drivers
in particular that) so to install a driver - reboot - check that it is installed and repeat as
    necessary.

Repeat to the manufacturers - BTW in the DO NOT RUN THEIR SCANNER device - check
    manually by model.

Look at the sites of the manufacturer for drivers - and the manufacturer of the device manually.

How to install a device driver in Vista Device Manager
    http://www.Vistax64.com/tutorials/193584-Device-Manager-install-driver.html

If you update the drivers manually, then it's a good idea to disable the facilities of driver under Windows
Updates, that leaves about Windows updates but it will not install the drivers that will be generally
older and cause problems. If updates offers a new driver and then HIDE it (right click on it), then
get new manually if you wish.

It is not recommended to use ANY registry cleaner program such that they can do more harm to your any good operating system that they claim to be able to do, and that includes the registry Option in CCleaner.

    1. Open an elevated command prompt. To do this, click Start, click principally made programs, Accessories, right-click guest, and then click run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type the password, or click allow.
    2. Type the following command and press ENTER:
      sfc/scannow

The sfc/scannow command analyzes all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with appropriate Microsoft versions.

Have you tried to clean your Temp folder, you can do this by typing folder in the Start Menu RUN box.  This will open your Temp folder, there, you can remove all Windows will allow you to do.

It may be necessary to show both hidden and system files and also uncheck 'Hide known file types' in Control Panel / folder Options / view to navigate to the mentioned location of Temp.

This example may or may not work for you with your program, use the built-in Administrator account to perform the installation?

"It seems that the"Run as Administrator"command gives you administrative privileges only, and they are not enough to install Java (and OpenOffice, by association). To work around this problem, you must actually connect to the built-in administrator. Open a command prompt with admin rights by clicking Start, type cmd in the search/run box, hit CTRL-SHIFT-ENTER. At the prompt, type:

NET user administrator / Active: Yes

Then disconnect from your regular account and folder administrator integrated, where you might be able to install the program. When you are finished, open a session to your regular account and, for security reasons, disable the built-in using administrator account:

    «net user administrator / active: No.»

    Change Data Execution Prevention settings

Data Execution Prevention (DEP) is a security feature that protects against viruses and other security threats by analyzing your programs to make sure that they use the system safely memory.

If you choose to protect all programs, you can always turn off DEP for individual programs. If you think that a program does not run correctly when DEP is enabled, check for a compatible version of the DEP program or an update from the software publisher before you change your DEP settings.

    1. Click to open the system.

    2. Click Advanced system settings.  If you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

    3. Under performance, click settings.

    4. Click the Data Execution Prevention tab, and then click turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select.

To turn off DEP for an individual program

      • Select the check box next to the program that you want to turn off DEP for and then click OK.

If the program is not in the list, click Add. Navigate to the Program files, search for the executable file of the program (it will have the .exe extension) and then click Open.

To turn on DEP for an individual program

      • Clear the check box next to the program that you want to turn on DEP for and then click OK.

    Hi MARYMac2011,

Data Execution Prevention (DEP), is a security feature that can help prevent damage to your computer from viruses and other security threats. DEP can help protect your computer by analyzing the programs to ensure that they use the system safely memory. If a program tries to code running (also known as the execution) of memory in an incorrect way, DEP closes the program.

Data Execution Prevention (DEP), follows the programs to use memory. If DEP finds memory used incorrectly, DEP closes the program and let you know. If you trust the program, you can add it to an exceptions list so that DEP won't close it, but you must first check with the manufacturer of the program to see if there is a DEP compatible version available.

Refer to this article to add it to the list of exceptions in the DEP:
