Disappearance of the desktop icons

My desktop icons have all disappeared, and I can't put anything new on the desktop.  If I try to move a desktop folder icon in 'computer' I get a message saying "the file source and destination are the same".  I can't use system restore because apparently my computer has not followed the restore points.  What else can I try?

I use an HP computer came with Vista Business pre-installed, so I have no disks.  This is about a week he has after Adobe and Windows updates settled there.  I tried to uninstall them but no luck.  I have Norton 360 installed, but it tells me that there is no problem.  Help, please!

Maybe their attributes changed to hidden, a virus could do.

If this does not work, try to install the Windows updates and reboot your computer. I would also like to run a virus scan. Good luck!

    Hi akilsun,

-Remember you proceed with recent computer between the calendar changes when things worked fine and now?

This problem occurs if the function display desktop icons has been disabled.

To enable this feature, see the following article:
  • The desktop icons disappear

Start and the desktop icons disappear when the computer is left unattended for a period of time.

All I have is the wallpaper and the cursor of the mouse.

    Computer must be restarted.

I have attempted to correct the problem with all possible suggestions, but I have to restart computer each time.

    Please help.

    Hi reda

Thank you for taking the time to help me with my problem.

I tried method 1 and it did not help, I tried method 2 and I received an error message indicating that the sfc scan has failed and method 3, returned a negative virus detection.

Out of pure frustration, I pulled the cables at the back of the computer and left the cable VGA/SVGA male PC to another port on the computer (at the bottom of the computer toward the upper left side), and it seems to have done the trick - why I do not know?

Since the cable, the computer has been running at 100%, and the problem seems to have corrected itself.

Thanks a lot again for your answer.

    Kind regards

  • the desktop icons disappear when I connect through a VPN

On my Windows 7 Professional 64-bit, SP1 system, automatic reorganization and snap to grid are unchecked.  And I don't have problems with icons on a restart.  I have problems when I access my system in my home using a VPN and the DRC.

Sometimes when I connect, I find that most of my desktop shortcut icons have disappeared and the few remaining ones are reorganized.  It happens every time and I did not understand a common denominator as to when it occurs.

I copied all my desktop shortcuts to a folder on a different drive if I can put them all after they disappear, but when I copy and paste them on the desktop, they do not return to the same places they were in front.  Instead, they are lined up on the grid starting at the top left and go down and creating more columns until all the icons were pasted.

So, I have to manually, drag and drop them where I want them to be.

Like others who interrogated him about the desktop icons, when I right click on the desktop I do not receive a "Properties" link as shown.  I'm getting , sort by view, refresh, paste & paste the shortcut, cancel deletion, New, screen resolution, Gadgets and Personalize.

I also tried another solution that said"right-click an empty space on your desktop and Select the desktop icons.  When I right click, I get the menu described in the previous paragraph.  Then when I start to clicking on icons to highlight, the menu disappears.  If I pointed out all the icons first and then with the right button on the desktop, the menu and the highlighting disappears.

How can lock the desktop icons?  I agree with the donor who asked a parameter for "don't mess with my desktop computer EVER.

    Hi Jane,

Given that the problem seems to occur when you access your system from home using a VPN (Virtual Private Network) and RDC (Remote Desktop connection). I would like you to post your question in the TechNet forums for help.

  • shortcut on the desktop icons disappear in windows 7.

    Hello, good morning.

I'm back with yet another question.

I've recently converted to Windows 7 from XP Pro and have had problems. This last is rather strange. It seems only to happen Monday a.m.. The shortcut icons disappear from the desktop. Today - Monday - they have waited until between 10 and 11:00 go AWOL, but have been known to leave earlier.

I tried a few remedies offered online following (Yes, the 'Show icons' box is checked) and so far nothing seems to improve the situation.

I am currently using Windows 7 Service Pack 1.

I use the software on a Dell Optiplex 380 which has been upgraded to 2 GB of RAM - processor is an Intel Core 2 DUO 2.93 GHz - it is a 32-bit operating system.

I managed to find a number (KB 2670504) on the Microsoft Web site. This document or software fix or anything that was to offer a solution to the problem, but I wasn't able to find it on the Web site.

I can only say that I had no problems like this with the faithful XP software. It ran like a champ. But I guess time marches on.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Kind regards

Thanks for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

I understand that you have with disappearing icons on the desktop and the start menu. We are happy to help you in the matter of fixing.

Please follow the following suggestions to solve the problem.

Method 1: Check if the Show Desktop icons is enabled or not. Follow the steps mentioned below to do the same.

Right click on the desktop, point to view , and then click show the desktop icons.

Method 2: This problem could be due to corrupt system files or viruses in the computer. So, you can try to test the problem in safe mode and see if that helps.

Step 1: See the link to start in safe mode.

Start settings for Windows (including safe mode)

Step 2: If you are able to turn off the computer in safe mode, I suggest you perform the clean boot because your system in a clean boot state can identify if all parties third party applications or startup items are causing the problem. You must follow the steps in the article mentioned below to perform a clean boot.

How do I perform a boot in Windows

Note: See "How do I reset the computer to start normally after a boot minimum troubleshooting" to prepare the computer to start as usual after a repair.

Also, try to run Microsoft Security Scanner to check if there are viruses in the computer.

    Microsoft safety scanner

Note: The data files that are infected must be cleaned only by removing the file completely, which means that there is a risk of data loss.
