Disk space is missing/disappeared...

Recently, I noticed that there was a drastic/sudden drop on my Tablet Surface RT / 32 GB of disk space.  I can't explain 4.5 GB of space.  I'm up to 8 GB free on the 24 GB on the main partition and I moved all my media files and documents of my 32gig MicroSD card. So that leaves only windows/office, Cache Office, installed applications and configuration settings for 3 users on the C: drive and which is reported as being 17 GB!

So I investigated the use of the disc is to show the following numbers (and Yes, the trash is empty):

17.2 GB in use

7,69 GB free

Then I studied the size of folder and it does not add up to 17.2 GB

MSOCache: 1.29 GB

Program Files: 959 MB

The program data: 94 MB

Users: 2.94 GB

Windows: 8.32 GB

What happened to the valuable 4.5 GB of missing disk space on the primary drive?  It seems that this has happened after the recent patches/updates?  How to bring back this space?  I tried the normal disk cleanup process, but he didn't get this kind of space.  I have a lot of space on the MicroSD card, but I can't install apps on this disc and it's a slower drive.

Any help would be appreciated.

Surface RT is awesome!

Ray:

Have you seen Surface FAQ disk space?

http://www.Microsoft.com/surface/en-us/support/surface-with-Windows-RT/files-folders-and-online-storage/surface-disk-space-FAQ

I wonder if the recent decline was due to an update of Windows? Try this:

Open the charm of parameters, type disk cleanup, and then tap Settings. Choose defragment and optimize your drives from the search results. Tap optimization.

(maybe some temporary files will be deleted?)

You can free 3.5 GB if you create a recovery USB disk (and delete the recovery image on the Surface):

  • ~ 30 GB of disk space are missing on my T61

    Hello

My T61 has a 80 GB drive. I use ~ 45GB (including program files, Windows etc.), and I have only 2 GB of free space. Where have I lost 30 GB of disk space? I guess that's something to Lenovo that uses disk space for backup. Can I check that? If it is used for the backup, delete old backups?

    Thank you

    Erez

first of all you don't have 80 GB of hard drive space in space, as the manufacturer of HARD drive use 1 GB = 1000 MB, while the BONES see 1 GB = 1 024 MB, so the moment where you format your HARD drive, there are already 80 x 24 MB of space missing. While the rest of the lack of hard drive space are mostly taken as a backup and backup recovery, if you want to remove them just go to folder Thinkvantage-> Rescue and Recovery, in which you are authorized to view and delete backups, but make sure that you remove the smallest to the largest, otherwise the process will freeze , due to insufficient space, you have on your hard drive.

I use Premiere Pro on a Mac to edit video. Whenever I have a project, I noticed that a lot of hard disk space is missing. I deleted all of my video files and almost all my project files. I went in Finder on Mac to see if I could find were the room isn't, but I'm not able to see all the really big files that could be made of the space. Does anyone have any suggestions? First of all, most of the people working in these programs use more than a sub-Go of disk.

Second... I don't think you have check your files from the cache, the database & such? Look in the drive of the project files tab / Scratch...

  • Missing after pre-allocating to extra 40 GB hard disk space

    Hello

I use Windows 7 with VMWare fusion and everything works fine except after a few days, I'm already low disk space.

What virtual machine installation automatically allocated 40 GB by default Windows C: / / hard drive. On the settings tab, under the hard drive, I moved the slider up to 80 GB and checked the "pre-allocate disk space" option before applying the settings. It took a few minutes to complete and then the extra space was absent from the partition on my mac, but when I run windows folder C: / / is still only 40 GB, and I can't find where the missing space disappeared.

Anyone know how I can develop either drive C to the 80 GB that was to be distributed on it, or otherwise restore disk space lost from my mac?

    Kind regards

    Jack

    Hi Jack,

    Welcome to the forums.

After resizing the virtual disk, you must tell Windows 7 to extend its partition. Go to the management of records within your guest and extend your C: drive with available disk space.

    Hello

I finally solved the problem by removing the somr registry keys and then he met again today. I decided to fix it permanently.

I have not explored all the possibilitiies, but here's a simple solution: just delete the following key

By removing this key you wil lose customization files. This probably isn't a big deal, but you should know.

Now, I don't know if this is specific to my setup I was able to solve the problem by removing only 1 value:

  • Deletion of drive to the VM makes disk space disappear

I'm new to esxi, then I've probably missed something obivous. But I'm running a Server Windows 2012, and I wanted to add a new hard drive for storage.

I added a new 2 TB HDD (virtual disk new created, used thick Prov. and scsci), but then (for other reasons probably) it is a not introduce yourself in my server, little matter what I did, so I decided to remove the hard drive and then try again. And here's the problem, these 2 TB that I previously had been assigned but now deleted, moved from my data store. I expect the free space on the data store to increase these CT 2, I just deleted the virtual computer, but not... they are not there. I tried again, but with a smaller size this time (40GB if this is important) and deleted, same thing... disk space is not go back into the data store.

Now, I guess I missunderstood, or more probably not clicked on something else which is necessary. That's why I'm here hoping for the support of you guys =)

    1. what should I do to get this "loss" space?

    2. (question bonus and sort of off topic) no idea as to why the new disk does not appear in my server Windows 2012? I did the same thing for freenas and he showed here.

    Thank you!

When you have removed the disk you selected the option 'remove virtual machine and delete the files from disk '?  You will need to do a new analysis under storage to the reclaimed space.  Let me know if this helps.

So I noticed weird things with the hard drive, it loses the space without having added anything in it, I tried everything that I saw on various forums, still does not work.

First, someone said I should activate deactivate the disk-based restore points, did, and it is still eating place.

Then I searched more and saw someone who says that I should download 'CCleaner' and it will remove most of the things that are most certainly in space and which are not necessary, did this cleared space, but he eats ALWAYS a space

Also, someone said that I should get 'TreeSize', done this, cleared up a lot of space, but after a while, half of the space that I had deleted was already gone (it's a 6 GB, otherwise a lot for you, then good for you, there is plenty of space for me)

Scanned several times, nothing has been detected

I always desperately trying to stop this, but nothing works and would appreciate any kind of help.

This is the same service that animates the views of storage in vcenter, so there is no need to update each intervals of ~ 24 hr 5 min. is what you'll usually see by "space"stats, which cannot be changed."

  • Error message Microsoft Word "Word could not create the work file. Check the amount of disk space on your startup disk. »

I have a MacBook Pro, retina 13inch OS X el Capitan Version 10.11.1 with 16 GB of memory. It's brand new and I have recently installed Microsoft Word/Powerpoint etc. a disc that I bought a few years to my previous MacBook. It seems to work very well, but whenever I want to open a word document a message comes up saying "Word could not create the work file. Check the amount of disk space on your startup disk '. However, once I click 'OK' this message disappears and my word file opens without a problem. I have 16 GB of memory on this laptop and it's new I have not reached anywhere near the maximum amount of storage so I'm puzzled as to what this message means. How can I avoid that this message popping up everytime I open Microsoft Word? Any help would be appreciated!

This has nothing to do with memory - it's the SSD. Word tries to create a temporary file to use as a backup if the program crashes while you are working. First, run the Microsoft Update program to see if there are updates you have missed. Second, Microsoft currently supports only versions 2011 and 2016, so if yours is older, you should consider the upgrade. Thirdly, I suspect that the temporary file is not get created so that you have fewer cancellations (maybe any) and that if the program crashes you have to restore.

  • Cannot free up disk space on drive c.

    Hello

I have an older version of Windows XP on my computer and despite the use of the function of disk cleanup, add/remove programs functions and Windows components, so to try to defragment the computer, I receive the message that the computer is low disk space.  I took all the programs that I don't use and attempted to take off from documents unnecessary, games, etc., as well, but when I check the C: drive on the 'Properties' tab, it shows almost the entire hard drive used.  I do not know what but because I even do not play a lot of games on it, have images or music programs and I can't understand what is on the hard drive of the computer.  If it of the adware or spyware, I can not say because when I tried to install an adware/spyware detector, he cannot do that because there is not enough disk space!  Obviously, something takes all the space, but how I tell me what it is and more important still, how do I get my computer?  Thank you.

I have this problem as well, and the question is larger than what these people are saying. If you open the folder and ctrl + a to select all, then go to properties, it will show that the contents of the folder is only about 5 or 6 concerts, 7 on it. the other 60 + concerts which takes the file are mysteriously non-existent. I have no idea what is causing this problem, but I can promise you that no amount of deletion it will manage because the memory is not be overtaken by what is actually stored on your computer.

It sounds like you're looking in a directory (folder) that includes hidden files and hidden folders.  What is the name of the "folder" you are watching?

While you have the mystery open in Windows Explorer, click Tools > Folder Options.  Select the view tab.  Scroll down and select the option "Show the hidden files and folders" and uncheck the box (a little further down) to "Hide protected operating system files."  Click OK.

The "disappeared" 60 GB now appears?

    See http://www.edbott.com/weblog/2005/05/tip-of-the-day-show-hidden-files-with-a-simple-script/

I suggest that you cancel the above changes when you are finished.

If you still can't find the missing stuff, download and run JDiskReport.  This will show you what takes up space on your hard drive.

  • compaction of disk space is removing the last 6 months of emails and put them in the trash. He has never done this before.

When I compact my disk space, it deletes all previous 6 months emails in the trash. He's never done this before and has since a few months I do not more. all compact space solutions without losing everything?

Compaction doesn't send your mail in the trash. Those are backup files in case something like this happens.

Two reasons the most common for what you describe is disruption of the compacting process, (never touch anything until it's finished), or bloated folders. More about that below.

Why OE insists on compacting folders when I close it? :

    About file Corruption:
    http://www.Microsoft.com/Windows/IE/community/columns/filecorruption.mspx

    Recovery methods:

If you use XP/SP2 or SP3, and are fully patched, then you should have a backup of your dbx files in the Recycle Bin (or possibly the message store), copied as bak files.

To restore a folder bak on the message store folder, first find the location of the message store.

Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store folder will reveal the location of your Outlook Express files. Note the location and navigate on it in Explorer Windows or, copy and paste in start | Run.

In Windows XP, the .dbx files are by default marked as hidden. To view these files in the Solution Explorer, you must enable Show hidden files and folders under start | Control Panel | Folder options | View.

Close OE and in Windows Explorer, click on the dbx to the file missing or empty file, then drag it to the desktop. It can be deleted later once you have successfully restored the bak file. Minimize the message store.

Open OE and, if the folder is missing, create a folder with the * exact * same name as the bak file you want to restore but without the .bak. For example: If the file is Saved.bak, the new folder should be named saved. Open the new folder, and then close OE. If the folder is there, but just empty, continue to the next step.

First of all, check if there is a bak file already in the message. If there is, and you have removed the dbx file, go ahead and rename it in dbx.

If it is not already in the message, open the trash and do a right-click on the file bak for the folder in question and click on restore. Open the message store up and replace the .bak by .dbx file extension. Close the message store and open OE. Messages must be in the folder.

If messages are restored successfully, you can go ahead and delete the old dbx file that you moved to the desktop.

If you have not then bak copies of your dbx files in the Recycle Bin:

DBXpress run in extract disc Mode is the best chance to recover messages:
    http://www.oehelp.com/DBXpress/default.aspx

    And see:
    http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#4

A general warning to help avoid this in the future:

Do not archive mail in default OE folders. They finally are damaged. Create your own folders defined by the user for mail storage and move your mail to them. Empty the deleted items folder regularly. Keep user created folders under 300 MB, and also empty as is possible to default folders.

Disable analysis in your e-mail anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer of protection that devours the CPUs, slows down sending and receiving and causes a multitude of problems such as time-outs, account setting changes and has even been responsible for the loss of messages. Your up-to-date A / V program will continue to protect you sufficiently. For more information, see:

I have about 20 shots then how do I know which one it is?

    Best regards

    -Morten Hermansen, Fanitas Green

I found the same thing. It is not a good behavior of the software, because it leaves doubts: it is not deleted, but how can I remove it?

I think that if it fails it should leave the icon to try again after you free the space.

Is a possible workaround: create another snapshot, and then delete it somewhere inside the machine snapshot tree.

For what I could see by looking at the disk space, after this deletion, the used space is lower than before the creation. I guess this operation triggers the actual deletion of the snapshot has disappeared. In addition, this deletion takes a long time, all in one

'create and delete soon' should be very fast.
