  • Dell Modular Disk storage hardware provider service stops during a VSS backup

On my Windows 2012 Hyper-V failover cluster, using 2 R710 servers with iSCSI and SAN MD3220I. When the backup (backup of Altaro Hyper-V), I get these 3 mistakes of two servers during the backup every night. Service was set to restart.

    Someone help here?

Julian, my problem is very similar, though different because I use Veeam.  Here is what I posted on the forums of Veeam - if all goes well, it will help you

Looks like the solution is to uninstall the 'SmVssProvider' who, when running "vssadmin list providers", is listed as:

    The provider name: "SmVssProvider."

    Provider type: hardware

    Provider ID: {24e4e8a3-69cb-4370-8b7b-c5276cd49765}

    Version: 10.84.02

This service is launching the premium add-on snapshot service that you can buy for the MD by Dell line. If you do not buy it, you don't need this provider. (for as far as I understand it at least)

To uninstall this provider, navigate to the folder in the folder storage uninstall VDS - VSS MD. By default, it is at:

C:\Program Files (x 86) \Dell\MD Storage Software\VDS_VSS\Uninstall Modular Disk Storage Hardware Provider (* BE CAREFUL here and double check your path.) There is more than one with a similar path and name.* uninstall program)

Once inside this folder, run the "uninstall modular disk storage hardware Provider.exe.

Note that the uninstall program is very rudimentary - there is no GUI or confirmation that it's over. The file and the service will simply disappear.

This will remove the "SmVssProvider" and the corresponding Windows services:

'Modular disk storage hardware provider' (SMPROVIDER1. EXE - identical to SmProv ~ 1.exe).

In my case, service of 'Modular disk storage hardware provider' has been set to start "Automatic", although it did not work, so I was unable to uninstall the provider without stopping I/O or disruption to my VMs. There is no restart request either. Although YMMV so proceed with caution.

  • Modular Disk Storage Manager

We are decommissioning of an old server hosting the Modular Disk Storage Manager software and I was wondering if there is a procedure to move it to another host.  Is there a way to copy/export configuration and import it to the new host?

The configuration is stored on the MD table itself. The only thing that is stored on the server's IP SAN network addresses, so that he knows where to find.

So you can just download the last DVD of MD resources for your San, install it on the new server, leave the auto discover table and confirm you can see everything. Once you feel comfortable that it looks good, you can retire the other server (uninstall MDSM or just format the old server).

  • Reduced block size but no big change on the disk storage

    Hi all

This is my first post on this forum and I hope that I won't have any rule of Recommendation to report a question completely distinguish...

I need your advice on the disk storage of a BSO cube, here are the details:

Make tests on a cube of OSI, I reduced the size of the block of 76 032' to 11'232 bytes. Then, I was interested to check if the disk storage has been reduced... So, I took the same set of data and loaded into the old structure as well as in the new structure. For both structures, I have applied exactly the same calc script + has not changed any other settings (such as "cache" for example).

When I checked the results, I was really surprised because with the same set of data, it must 13go to the old structure and still 10 GB for the new even if the size of the block is really small... I've heard that "compression" could play a role here, but except for the compression, you have an idea of the reason why the disk storage is not smaller whith the new block size?

Thanks in advance for your different tips and best regards,
    Laurent
P.S: the density is not very good because I tried to do tests on a smaller data set than the real...

^ ^ ^ You just stated that all of the data is not representative and is actually smaller than reality. So that means you load (approximately) the same set of data in large blocks and small blocks. Guess what happens when it is compressed...

To answer your question, the real test would be, for a number of limited but representative of blocks (good luck with that one), blocks of size reduced and complete tests. That will give you real world block size.

BTW, I'm guessing / hoping that you did all members of dense upper level dynamics. There is almost never (well, sometimes, but really very rarely) a reason to store the dense upper limbs at level. A large part of the time forms dense member of lower level can also be set to dynamic.

  • The CARS performance bottleneck will be the shared disk storage?

    Hi all
I'm studying CARS and I am concerned about the bottleneck of CARS I/O performance.
If I have 10 knots and they use the same disk storage to contain the data, then
they're going to do i/o on the disk at the same time.
    Maybe we got more latency...

Will it be a performance problem?

How RAC does not solve this kind of problem?

    Thank you.

All 10 nodes connected with storage shared by FIBRE cable which give faster latency also all nodes interconnection must be a GIGABIT switch. This option two is going to solve the problem of slow disk i/o.

  • Photos on the local disk storage

Photos is storage of photos on my MacBook Air even though I have iCloud. Taking up to 12 GB on the hard disk.  In preferences, I 'Use iCloud library' checked with 'optimize '.  Why should a space on my hard drive? Is there anyway for there no pointed out that memory?  I have a lot of room in my iCloud (143 GB) account for storage. I tried dragging and deposited in iCloud, but that did not work.

The fine print under Photos preferences settings optimize storage includes the words: "Original is also stored on the Mac if you have a storage space."

    No movies in iTunes?

If it is a result of a damaged index, force Spotlight to reindex your disk/volume:

    1. from the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.

    2. click on the projector.

    3. click on the Privacy tab.

    4. drag a folder or an entire volume (hard disk) to the list.

    5. If prompted for confirmation, click OK.

    6. remove the element or the volume that you added to the list by clicking on it, then clicking the sign less (""-"") button.

    7. close Spotlight preferences.

  • HP 13 Stream: Disk storage capacity

Out of the box, my 13 Stream had a capacity of 20 GB disc approximately; but the available capacity is less than 3 GB. All the apps together, represent less than 1 GB. Can someone explain why there is not more available capacity?

I bought 13 Stream because it is advertised as being expandable to 10 Windows, but I get a message that there is not enough storage to do.

Yes, it will work also.  You can move or create a recovery on a USB stick or an SD card drive.

Windows has this function. Here is a link to information on how to do it.

    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows-8/create-USB-recovery-drive

Thus, you can remove the default recovery partition before the upgrade because it is rendered usless once the upgrade is finished anyway. That would save you have to delete it later.

If its on a different disk, you can return to 8.1 if necessary.

  • Reference DELL Modular Disk Storage Manager cannot see MD36xxf because of the version of the firmware to high

I have a DELL MD3600f that is connected to a DELL R710. The system was all the installation and work programme, but the OS disk has become corrupted and had to be rebuilt. The system has not all backups, because it was still under construction. The problem is that a system administrator updated the Firmware on the MD3600f to the 07.80.41.60 version. According to the notes the versoin of DELL PowerVault MD Series Storage Software Resource DVD 3.0.0.18 or later must be installed before update the RAID controller firmware.

Problem is the update of the firmware is already in place and the MD storage software cannot talk to the MD3600f now because of the correspondence of Miss firmware.

No matter how lucky it is a updated software storage MD there? I tried low grade firmware, but that has been denied.

Why not give the link to the latest version; 4.1.0.88?

  • check and blue or green box returns the hard disk storage

I had this problem every since I bought the external drive.  Loads of storage there, but when I view a file, if I use all or part of it, restore it, there is a blue or green box which returns with the restored item.  The green box is enabled, and the blue box has double arrows pointing to the right.  What a pain...  I placed in checked and removed indexing and archive capabilities, and who will be after several tests some of them take off the file, but so far I can only do one at a time.  I'd rather the machine in the dumpster than that and if I replace the external hard drive, I have one problem with another.  The problem has nothing to do with windows 7 or 8, I upgraded from 7 pro 8 and they both do the same thing.   ANY IDEAS?  EVEN A HINT?  ?  I THINK THAT I FORMAT THE DISK AND THROW IT INTO THE RIVER. .

Looks like your drive came with a program that synchronizes data. Or you are looking to your Skydrive storage folder.

  • Virtual machines deployed on VSAN without selected with THICK disk storage policy

    Hello

We had an admin build 50 VMs on our data VSAN store but did not choose the VSAN storage policy while he got the default which allows you to have the THICKNESS of the disks provisioned

I have chnaged any of the virtual machines to use the VSAN storage policy (which uses a thin) but the virtual machine is still using all the space

Is there a way to make virtual machines recover white space, now they have a VSAN storage strategy?

Yes - I have to agree with Duncan. I don't think that there is a way to return/reduce the size.

An idea is, if you have additional storage, Storage vMotion VM to NFS or VMFS, converting to thin and then back to VSANS with a policy that doesn't have a "thickness".

Try it with a VM - see if it works.

A bit of a drag, I know, but I can't think of any other casual way.

    Thank you very much

    Alex

Ah, it is a bit of a problem, I'm afraid.

vSphere provides only the freespace on a level of data store, not by the hard drive.

There are a number of ways to get the freespace by hard drive, but none of them are foolproof, as far as I know.

For example have a peek at the post called Alan PowerCLI: using Virtual Machine disc

This gives the freespace, but an internal view of the BONE. In other words, it shows the OS partition information.

And mapping of the partitions of hard disk operating system is not simple.

A good method, which works in most cases, is the method of Arnim Match VM and HDDs in Windows using PowerCLI
