Do I need certified readers?

Can I mix readers certified and not certified in my PERC 5 / I array?

What's the story with the certified readers?

Thank you

You can, but I wouldn't.

Here are some things you need to know about the readers:

1 consumer/desktop/computer portable readers.  These discs are designed for operation 8 x 5 and are programmed with settings in order to optimize their as the only drive in a machine, with lax timings and thresholds of long recovery.  These discs are generally unsuitable for use in RAID storage or business devices.

You will experience almost certainly some problems with consumer drives... nothing random timeouts/connection offline similarly not be seen by the controller at all.

2 business readers.  These discs are designed for operation 24 x 7 and are programmed with settings in order to optimize their when used in conjunction with other disks in an array.  Timing and the error thresholds and the recovery are very small and very strict, on the assumption that they would use in a high-performance configuration, redundant.  Business records are also scheduled to meet a series of commands "enterprise" drives to consumers are not.  Business controllers expect readers to answer correctly and on time to these requests - consumer readers don't know how to meet these demands of business readers do.

You can or can without any problem with the readers of the company's sales in the retail/credits - depends on their narrowness and settings they are at the height of what awaits the controller.  Generic/detail of the models typically have relaxed a little more settings that certified readers, allowing them to be more generally compatible with several devices, but also may lead to questions to communicate effectively with the controller.  Some drive manufacturers tweak and test their firmware to be compatible with the different controllers.  Take the WD RE4, for example: they have lists of compatibility indicating what controllers they have tested and verified compatibility with.  These are not considered "certified", that specific OEM approved no new firmware, but there is a very high probability that they will work without problem.

3 certified disks.  These drives are enterprise class disks, but are loaded with a special version of the firmware, tuned to the specific needs and parameters of the controller for which they are certified.  Orders of the controller and the settings expect concrete answers or wait for answers in a particular time frame, certified firmware ensures that regardless of the brand or model of the player, this player is guaranteed to answer how and when the controller expects.  Certified firmware is loaded on the disks by drive for the OEM manufacturers.  This isn't a practice Dell - HP, IBM, and most of the names of big 'storage'... is the only way to ensure the reliability and performance of their systems.

All that said, as a recommendation or suggestion only, you can use 'good' company not certified discs, class OR certified readers but I would not mix them if it can be helped.

    Hello

Short story 'no '. However, you must create and image of your current system on DVD or on a network drive and a bootable CD to start a recovery program. You can do this with Rescue and Recovery or with Acronis True Image (my preference).

Note that the image you have on the disk is the Lenovo factory image. It is usually best to create an image after you installed all of your software on the computer and configure.

  • Add records

    Hello

We have a MD3000i currently configured with 6 X 146 GB drives, now we want to add 6 more readers to this device, these new drives are drives of 1 TB.

    question,

Can we add these new 1 TB drives this device? or they have 146 GB drives?

    Thank you

On a MD3000i, the device must always be in unified mode. Any MD1000 is Garland off a MD3000i must also always be in unified mode.

Split mode is reserved, if you want to divide a MD1000 in 2 and give readers half to 2 different servers (each server would need a PERC5E or PERC6E inside).

Note that only Dell PowerVault certified discs will work in a MD3000i (or any MD1000 Garland out of it). Certified readers will be the Dell name/logo on the label and have a Dell partnumber on them (as well as the manufacturer original partnumber and model).

  • RAID 5 problem with R410 Perc 6 / i controller

I have a Setup RAID 5 on a Dell PowerEdge R410 (4-300 GB Hard Drives).  I'm moving hard disk of 300 GB to 600 GB hard drives, so I can increase the available storage.  I replaced the drive in the Groove #2 with a 600 GB drive first, because he was already in a failed State.  After the reconstruction, I waited til the next day for the replacement of the other drives 600 GB drives.  When I replaced the drive at location 0 #, the drive into the #2 Groove entered the predicted state failure during rebuild.  So, after the reconstruction, I replaced the drive in the #2 Groove a 2nd time with another 600 GB hard drive.  During this rebuild, the reader Slot #0 also entered a predicted failure State.  So I let the server run for a few days.  And now the two Slot #0 and #2 (the ones with the new 600GO drives) are in a State of predicted failure.  I can't believe that I would have 3 bad drives in a row.  I use all Dell certified readers.  Can advise you, what do I do then?  Update the firmware? Going back to the old drive?  It is a critical production server, so I need to minimize all the time as much as possible.

    Thanks in advance,

    Byron

    Hello

A predictive failure is reported on a drive when there is excessive bad blocks on the disk. Since you have rebuilt the drive in the existing table, most likely other readers had bad blocks that were copied to the new drive. What operating system do you use? There is not a way to get readers off predictive failure, once they are reported. There is potentially a much larger problem with the table. I recommend you make a backup of all data files.

  • Slow writes PERC H700 and Samsung 850 PRO SSD

I saw several posts about this, but don't see a solution.

I have a few servers R710 with H700 controllers. I have installed Samsung 1 TB SSD Pro 850 and see writing very slow compared to other performance SSD tested in one box, simply slow in general. SAMSUNG SSD are ~ 500 MB/s in both sense when connected to the stand-alone desktop computer, but ~ 500 MB/s read and ~ 45 MB/s, writes when it is connected to a server.

    1. 1 x SSD in RAID 0 - no redundancy, just to test the performance. I tried all combinations of memory cache writeback and read before possible setting (enabled, disabled) and has never had more than ~ 45 MB/s, writing.

    2. 6 x SSD in RAID 5 with all possible combinations of never getting write cache over ~ 110 MB/s, writing.

    3. 6 x SSD in RAID 10 yet one time all possible settings of the writeback cache - ~ 140 MB/s.

Finally, I installed 120 GB Intel SSD and got more than 400 Mbps in both directions without worrying about the RAID or cached.

What is the problem with the H700 and Samsung SSD controllers? No one knows how to fix?

Any other R710 compatible controller, which do not have this problem? Might be able, JBOD? I also tried a stop the controller PCIe Board without a bit of luck (bottom of basket or any compatibility issues)

    Thanks in advance.

    P. S.

The controller is a latest firmware and the BIOS and other components. Used Dell Repository Manager iDRAC discovery and the ISO bootable to update everything.

SAMSUNG SSD are on a latest firmware as well.

    Hello.

The Samsung 850 Pro SSD are not validated or certified to work with controllers from Dell, and as such, there is an incompatibility of communication between readers and the controller at the firmware level. Thus, you are required to achieve the unexpected poor read and write performance regardless of the controller cache settings. Consider using Dell certified readers.

    Thank you.

  • PowerEdge T320 / Seagate Savvio 15 k SAS hard drives

    I'm trying to improve our hard drives from 10 k to 15 k, it's a drive RAID5 4 with a H710 perc card.

I replaced the first hard drive with a Seagate Savvio ST9300653SS disk and it worked great, but every time I try to substitute a different drive it always comes back with a predictive drive error, that happened on 4 different new readers.  The only difference seems to be the revision of the firmware on the drives, he who works is YS07 and all failed drives are 0004. I have improved the perc card later. I was wondering if anyone has seen elsewhere, or have any suggestions?  You want to understand this in the case of a drive failure.  Thanks in advance

  • POWEREDGE 2900 RAID 10 HAS NOT DEGRADED

    Hello

I have a Setup raid 10 on a server PowerEdge 2900, Perc 6 / i. There are 4 250 GB drives, set up as a Raid 10. A drive has failed. I tried the disk with a hot swap size even more recent. The server crashed and restarted, Post message showed during initialization F/W and writing degraded disk virtual, but restarting Ok. When I OpenManage it shows degraded and only shows 3 locations of the physical drive page. New drive is orange flashing on the right indicator light.

Can someone help me with the permutation of the reader?

    Thank you!

    Madmin46
Is that possible given that the new drive is not a certified dell disk that would cause problems?

Yes, and that's the most likely cause. Some versions of the AR4 are posted on several PERC controllers. Many times non-certified readers will work fine, but when certified and non-certified are run together, there are often questions... thinking that it is a American, South African and a Pilipino all English - speaking it may be difficult for the three to communicate because they all talk about the different versions of the same language, and language gap can cause problems on a controller which the tolerance of error and delay (patience) are thin.

  • Replacement of failed drives in MD3000i

It seems Seagate do not Barracuda more so I bought the records of Constellation equivalent [2]:

    [2] ST1000NM0023 Seagate HDD 3.5 1 TB SAS

When I install a new drive in the MD3000i 6 disks of origin stop them all and the SAN comes to a grinding halt. When I remove the new drive, they're all good again and the SAN he walks by along in degraded mode.

Why insert a new drive would cause the MD3000i to stop working?  If it's a compatibility problem, what are the correct replacement push?

Only Dell MD3000i certified readers will work in a MD3000i. The support matrix is a list of models supported by car, but also so they have to have the Dell firmware on them (what you can not put on it).

  • New HARD drive not recognized by the SAS on PowerEdge T410 controller

One of the drives has failed on my RAID 1 configuration, so I bought a non-certified dell, Seagate Barracuda 500 GB drive (other readers were 250 GB).

I turned off the machine and swapped the failed drive with a new one (cable connections)

When I boot in Sas (SAS 6 ir) controller, it shows that the disk is missing.

I turned off the server and changed the cables from the primary to the new disk, to see if it would make a difference. None. Watch again ' driving status: missing.

What I have to buy dell certified readers? I'm doing something wrong? Or is the obsolete RAID controller?

Any help would be appreciated! My primary hardrive gives signs of failure. I have a picture of him, but I'd like to get it mirrored on my new record ASAP.

    Thank you

    Hello director87

Go to the RAID properties > manage table > manage Hot Spare disks. You should see a list of all drives that detects the controller. Your RAID 1 drives will be listed as primary and secondary. The new drive should not be anything in the area of the 'State of the drive. Use the arrows to select the new disk and keys to assign it as a spare drive + /. After you assign it as a spare drive it should start to rebuild.

If you don't see the drive in the list, then check the screen of the SAS topology. If you see in the SAS topology then use CTL D to shoot to the top of the additional options. Let me know if it will allow you to do something to the reader in this screen. If you don't see in SAS topology then it does not appear that the controller is able to communicate properly with this player.

    Thank you

You can, and it can work properly.  All certified disk includes the risk of bad contact with the controller.  So, the answer is 'yes', but at your own risk.  Dell will also help you solve the problems of storage without certified readers, so if you go credits/retail, get ready to make your own troubleshooting - or be able to make experts if necessary.

You may NOT USE the SME players on the controllers of the company although.

  • How to erase the hard drive, foreign State in T630 with H730 PERC controller

I recently bought a Poweredge T630 Server computer configured with a PERC H730 controller and two 1 TB SATA (raid 1) drives.

The controller H730 being compatible with no dell certified readers, I bought 2 WD red label records to add more storage space.  The problem I have is it H730 one of the 2 WD drives senses as a 'foreign' drive  Under "available tasks", I see only two options, "Blink" and "Unblink.  Unlike other HDD WD, the controller does not allow me even an option to convert the capable RAID drive.  This only happens to one of the two WD drives. The WD with 'Foreign State' drive is not defective or damaged.  How can I clear the foreign flag on one of the two WD drives so that I can convert the two disks in RAID ready status.

    Hello

You have a foreigners view tab when you are in the bios H730? If you do, you should be able to use ctrl + N to access this screen, select the controller, press F2 and go to foreign config and have the ability to clear the foreign configuration.
