EqualLogic replication

Hi people,

I hope someone can give me some advice on EqualLogic replication.

I created a Volume - 1600 GB in size, and it has been set to replicate to a partner.

The part I don't understand if the total replication reserve - I put this to 160% of the volume - that is to say. the reserve must be GB 2560

However, the real 'total replica reserve' in the Group Manager is listed as 256GB.

I noticed that the "replica volume current reserve" is indicating that it is 160 GB - this score, then with the figure above. I assumed that this figure is data currently on the volume, although I can't confirm that.

This means that you need to configure replication, once the volume has been implemented with all virtual machines and data?

Otherwise, I add 1000 GB of data on the volume and it has already reproduced several times, what happens to the size of total reserve replica? They update automatically or do I need to configure replication for the correct figures? This amount of data would change after initial replication are causing problems for replication or failures?

Thanks for your help

Rob

Hello, RobertPBham...

Total reserve of replica is a percentage of the current Volume of replica reserve that provides extra space for the replicas.  If current reserve replica Volume is 160 GB at the moment and the Total replica % reserve is fixed to 160%, then the total reserve of replica size is 256 GB (160 GB x 160%).

If the current Volume of the replica of reserve then increases, then the Total reserve size replica also automatically increases accordingly.

I hope this helps.  Please let me know if I can provide additional information.

Have a great day!

  • ESXi 5 Disaster Recovery Design

    Hi all

Was hoping someon might be able to point me in the right direction. We are currently running vSphere Essentials 5, more with 2 ESXi hosts in our production environment. The 2 hosts are connected to a PS4100XV Equallogic. We have an other PS4100XV in our Dr site and plan to replicate the production SAN volumes to DR over a 100Mbps fiber link. We will install our final host at the DR site.

Ideally, in a DR scenario, I would like to host in the Dr to point to the local SAN Equallogic DR. However I am not sure if the host must be in the same cluster as production or separate. Essentials plus allows only 3 guests, so we cannot have a second group.

In addition, if we vMotion servers to Dominican Republic, they would still be running from the production data store unless we change the data store, so of course, but then not not sure how that would influence the Equallogic replication.

I think we could just look for the data store on the Equallogic in DR, then add servers to the inventory, but do not know how this would impact vCenter. We have vCenter server works as a virtual machine.

I don't know there are a few best practices for this scenario and would be interested to hear if anyone has any ideas on how to address the issue? We are small enough environment and have only 15 servers.

    Thank you!

If we were cold migrate virtual machines to host ESXi DR site only, we could theoretically promote volumes on the site of DR EQ and then put on virtual machines?

If you migrated cold VMs to the ESXi host at the DR site, they will have to find on VMFS data warehouses that the ESXi host already has access to. You only need to promote the replica sets created EQ, if you wanted to access the replicated version.

  • VMware DR solution without Site Recovery

    HI team,

    Note:-WE do not MRS.

I have two site located at 1 KM on the other and is conencted Black 8 Gbps Fibre. I have plans to build a new center data with 4 esxi host and the VM 20 on primary host and 2 and 10 VM on the site of Dr. storage DELL Equallogic will accompany 10 Gbps conenctivity.

Application (virtual machine will be in courses running on the primary will be replicated to disaster recovery site using Equallogic replication Manager software.

Primary and DR will be like a configuration LAN same but actually having the physical difference 1 KM between them. It will be my DR about.

Design looks ok, but I have some questions related to the installation that are mentioned below.

    1. can I manage primary and DR esxi in the same group since I was a very good replication synchronization and a link dedicated between them. LUNs that are folded on main site will also show at the DR site.

    2. If I been general installation both primary and DR VMware vcenter but seen primary and DR two different cluster. Main when LUN relicated to Dr. storage how I can mount them in DR esxi server without putting them in shape since they will always have the availability of recent data in terms of VM.

I use the vm in the primary case fails that I can use them as a primary application.

    Thanks in advance.

Yes, that's exactly how we do it. vCenter actually extends from the Dominican Republic to the site so if production fails, your vCenter infrastructure is already running in DR. Since it is a virtual machine, thus, you also have the possibility of a migration between sites if there is no scheduled maintenance.

It is also a good example where you can set certain rules of DRS to ensure that you always know where your vCenter is in the case of an unplanned outage. I would create a rule that imposes the first host to your vCenter cluster (using one should decide, not a must rule) so that you can simply point your client vSphere to this host and raise vCenter first of all, when you need to - this saves checking each host to know where he is.

  • Replication groups two Equallogic

    Hello

I have two groups equallogic each connected to a separate switch dell, storage and switches from dell that they communicate with each other at all.

is it possible to configure replication between two of them on IP management? or what is the best practice in this case?

    Hello Dan,.

No sorry.  Replication can go on the iSCSI network.  The sending group creates and session iSCSI on the site of DR to transfer the data.   You will need to create a route between groups in order to use the EQL replication.

  • EqualLogic remote replication an auto-montage cascade, can link a replica for the slower berries?

Hello, I was wondering if anyone had an answer to that:

    We have recently installed 8 bays EqualLogic (4 x 6100 x + 4 x 6100F).

We have two servers and have set up a SAN array in each part of the machine consisting of a simple storage pool (2 x 6100 (RAID50) + 2 x 6100F (RAID6)) in order to use the auto-montage cascading.

I played with the replication distance, and I can't seem to find a way to link a replica to a RAID type or a member. Ideally I would like to bind all replicas to our tables more nits that are running in RAID 6.

It doesn't seem that this is possible, this is possible by having one or more slower berries in a different pool and replicate to this pool instead. The reason why I was initially resistant to this idea was that I wanted to be able to exploit the performance of all the bays via auto-etagement, as opposed to spending tables for replication that would do anything for most of the day.

    Thank you

    Hello

OK, you can decide what to put in common the delegate space is, but not which Member or RAID type.

  • EqualLogic storage pool - replication

I am very new at EQL replication and am trying to wade into white papers.

I have several questions that I expect to have answered. But first a bit of my setup.

I have a PS6110XV (firmware 6.05) and one Storage Pool and Volume/LUN serving an ESX HA Cluster. The volume has been created (not by me) to its maximum almost 4.8 TB (high volume) with very little for the snapshots (5%) and local reserve. Common current use is 2.6 TB with a little over 1.8 free to.

I'm trying to understand my options of setting up this unit as a primary group to replicate on a PS4110E and will have questions. First of all, I grew up the PS4110E in its own group and am able to connect to the local iSCSI of the PS6110XV network. Everything is good with regard to connectivity at this point. However, Im faced with the question if I need to evacuate my volume entirely on the PS6110XV and start over with a new distribution of volume because the primary group fails for lack of space, which according to me is the lack of space that I have to return to the local reserve.

1 should I a local reserve on the primary group equal to or larger than the part 'in service' of the single LUN on this unit?

    1a. If Yes to 1;

My current volume on the PS6110XV shows 2.6 TB in use, however, I managed to get my HA cluster up to 1.7 TB. However, the volume on the LUN EQL shows still 2.6 TB of writing that I've previously run. I tried the vm tools to reclaim space, but now it is understand only oriented thin provisioned LUNs. Have I not an option to recover space on the thick LUNS, which should leave me theoretically with enough free space in the logical unit number to perform the initial replication?

    1B. If Yes to 1, not 1:

Can I add a second table of members (in my case a much PS5000 ELDERLY) to the primary group in another Pool of storage and use to the local reserve of my LUN PS6110XV just to accommodate replication?

    1 c. If Yes to 1 and no to 1A and 1B:

I have to evacuate my PS6110XV and start over and be smarter with my allowance and reserves to ensure that I consider the replication from the beginning?

    2. looking forward: once I get this configuration I have will locate the secondary group over the WAN. I have a lot of bandwidth, but I am willing to confirm some things. I understand that I can not NAT traffic. Telling me that I have the unique opportunity to set up a virtual private network, or go with a transfer L2. Is this correct? What I am especially struggling here is whether the default gateway of the NIC management or group should be accessible to the remote location. I don't know if I am articulating here and I'm strong enough with the side network, but think I should set up correct routing (not not using NAT) within the correct one iSCSI networks WAN link?

Thanks for any advice or information here. I really appreciate it.

    JK

    Do not remove the Member.

First of all I would like to convert the thick volume a thin provisioned volume.  Who will the new unallocated space in the pool of free space.   Supprimer delete snapshots, and rerun the recovery operation.  You may need to increase the percentage to reclaim space.

Then try again to configure replication for the PS4110.    Once you get the replicated data, you can then move the DR table to its final location.

Both need access to all ports on both sides.  Then yes a VPN.

    Kind regards

  • Storage vMotion with Syncrep on Equallogic San

    Hello

We recently bought 2 San Equallogic (PS6510ES) and turned on synchronous replication between them.

We use ESXi 5.5 and followed the best practices guide to disable TCP ack and 60 logintimeout value.

Everything seems to work fine until we tried Storage vMotion/migration and cloning VMS on the San.

When we did the migration of 2 volumes on the EQL SAN storage (the target volume has active syncrep), the target volume will be out-of-sync and then the storage vMotion will hang sometimes.

The worst is when such a problem has occurred, all other volumes on the EQL constantly to respond also. All volumes will not respond until we rebooted the corresponding ESXi host (NOTE: simple shut down/power outside the host won't help.) The San EQL will only return to normal after a reboot of the ESXi host).

If we pause / off the syncrep before Storage vMotion, the problem will not happen.

    Is this normal or not?

In addition, whenever the problem occurred, the latency of writing the corresponding volume will be dry and we will receive alerts similar to the following:

    connection iSCSI target ' xx.xx.xx.xx:3260, iqn.2001 - 05.com.equallogic:xxxxx - test-volume ' initiator 'xx.xx.xx.xx:xxxxx, eqlinitiatorsyncrep' failed for the following reason:

Initiator, disconnected from the target when connecting.

    Thanks in advance.

  • Replication

Just, I configured the traditional replication between the two bays of series dell equallogic ps 6000xv. I managed to move all the vdi, I wanted to move. First of all, I created collections of volume and settles in the maximum limit of eight lots. I just realized that in the group in the source, I used a lot of space and I miss. If I delete my volume collections it disturbs my volumes being replicated on the partner server? I want to use it with another machine to retrieve the replica volumes. what I have to promote the collections of replica volumes until I try to boot from them?

    Hi Jamie,

Collection volume won't effect of space or replication.  A collection means you want all these volumes to be replicated or broken at the same time.   Usually, because they are inter connected.  I.e. volumes of logs and data.

You must promote or clone a replica to access.   Although promoted replication does not work. on this volume.

    Hello, Tom...

For volumes that are configured for asynchronous replication between two groups of Dell EqualLogic, you can use Dell EqualLogic Auto-Snapshot Manager Microsoft Edition to create consistent Copies with Smart Replica applications.

  • Issue of Dell PS6100 replication and DR

Hello everyone, I have 2 PS6100 SAN in two other site (site A and site B) for DR purposes. The VM .vhd files are stored in a volume on site A SAN. While the volume is replicated to site b. replication works very well. Our MRC is the following: when A VM site goes down. 1 interrupt us the replication from site A to site B. 2 volume) we turn on the virtual machine to site B. 3) promote us the incoming line to site B. 4) attached to the Hyper-V host using ISCSI initiator. (5) provide online on Hyper-V host volume and assign a drive letter. (5) and then attach to VM. My question is, can the volume PS6100 repeated in volume? So I don't have to go through this process. I would like to just start the VM DR in site B and have the fixed volume. Details of the two sites: WAN link 40Mbps Dell EqualLogic Microsoft Windows Server 2008R2 host servers Microsoft Windows Server 2008R2 VM PS6100

    Hello

N ° there is no direct replication like this.   You need to watch a replication based on the host for this ability.   You can only promote or clone a replica to access.

  • Dell FS7610 replication question

We currently have a FS7610 NAS and an EqualLogic PS6510E (with ~ 100 TB useful).  Our company just bought another FS7610 and PS6510 for replication purposes (the two new units will reside in another data center) and in the coming months we'll probably buy a bunch more (FS7610 and PS6510s) which will also replicate each other.  At this point, I don't know what to expect, but I am a little concerned about bandwidth Layer 3.  I talked to a couple of sellers of Dell and got two different answers on this... but on a FS7610, replication happens on the front-end or back-end?

    Thank you in advance!

In the case of the 76xx, replication is performed by the FS, not EQL table nodes, and it uses the subnet of the iSCSI network to perform replication.

  • EqualLogic & large virtual file shares. 4 TB +.

    Hello

We have accumulated a large amount of raw video and it begins to grow at 2 TB per year.

We currently have a virtual windows file server with an OS of RDM level to Equallogic volume.

Is - that the best way to continue to 10 GB + or have us think differently?

    vVols?

    Thank you

    Damien

    Hello Damien,.

I'm sorry but I'm not sure what you're asking.

EQL supports up to a volume of 15 to. Type of GPT partition supports this format. Depending on how your data is stored, you can use several volumes of inside the VM with RDM.  (letters of different drives or mount points)   That would avoid the use of dynamic disk and extend volumes.  Each virtual machine can have four adapters virtual SCSI with 15 drives on each card.  Which is about 900 TB per server. Instead of using RDM, you can use the inside the guest MS iSCSI initiator to connect to EQL volumes. Who removes this limit of 900TB.   That would allow to use the Host Integration Toolkit for Microsoft.  Improved MPIO and uniform/snapshot replication.   Also add support SCSI UNMAP to W2K8 R2 &. He was born in 2012 & R2.

Re: 10 GB +, I'm assuming you mean 10 Gb Ethernet?   10GbE doesn't impact much the size of storage if you grow only at 2 TB per year.  There are benefits to 10GbE, of course, if you intend to go anyway.

vVols works very well as RDM.  So not real huge advantage here.

Questions I would have is what the IO load you currently see?  From SANHQ.  What is your current EQL HW and ability?   The latest addition to the EQL family, the 6610 has up to 84 drives each and you can have 16 of them in a single group.  That is a huge amount of space with 6TBG readers, 1.3PT of RAW capacity.

    Kind regards

This seems to be a problem with the new security restrictions in Windows 2008 SP2. • Replication question

I have a 300 GB volume which currently holds 20 GB of files of database MSSQL (MDF, NDF, LDF)

This volume has never been reproduced in the past.  Just now, when I created this volume to replicate to an Equallogic off-site, "pending data transfer" immediately jumped to more than 71 GB.

Why would it, as this volume has never been implemented for replication in the past so there shouldn't be any incremental change to synchronize, and the volume contains only 20 GB of total data?

    TIA!

No, the table is a block level device, when a file is deleted by default that the info is not given in the table so that it can cancel the allocation of the blocks.  There is a new standard called UNMAP that will do just that.  But he had been in place from the beginning to UNMAP the blocks.

Windows Server 2012 and W2K8R2 with HIT kit 4.5 will do it.   Or file system EXT4 linux also supports SCSI UNMAP.

However, currently UNMAP is NOT supported with replicated volumes.
