eSATA vs usb external

I have a Dimension 8400 that I use an external hard drive USB 2.0 external WD for backups. The computer sometimes 'loses' working paper that becomes a major nuisance. In addition, WD makes more noise (IE clicking) lately and I want to add a new one or replace it completely. Two questions: an external esata will be more reliable as the computer to acknowledge and not "lose"; is it true that I can use a PCI express esata with my 8400.

My main concern is reliability, not the speed improvements. Thank you

    Hello

I have W7 Professional (32 bit) installed on an Acer Ferrari 5000 with 4 GB of RAM. I have a 1 TB WD My Book USB external hard drive connected via USB.

When I access the drive to play an Explorer of W7 film shows my folder & first screen load files instantly, but then the green progress under the full path bar direcory slowly starts to move across the screen and may take up to 3 minutes to stop. Durning his time my pc performace Marc everything stop. The video load but Windows Media Watch does not respond and the hourglass (or a circle in W7) shows the application as it is busy. Finally, video begins to play but jumps several images at once, even if the sound is fine. After about a minute the video started playing at double speed, befire the entire process repeats itself until it catches up with the sound and the video will play very well for about 10 minutes.

Videos are not damaged (I can play my portable hard drive very well), the device signals healthy in the WD diagnostic tool and the firmare for the device is up to date (on the WD site).

I see a lot of people in this forum have problems with W7 64 bit, but there is no mention of 32-bit issues. Also there never was problems with the device was detected or is not accessible - gal just access the device. My only job is about from the drive to copy the movie on my laptop and play it from there - which kind of defeated the purpose.

I left a similar post on the WD website, which so far had no response. Is it a question of W7/USB? Any other ideas would be useful.

Speed on USB hard drives is relatively slow at first. You are looking at maximum read anywhere between 25 and 32MBs speed if the CPU is not do much else at the time. Supported playback mode tend to transfer bog down over time, as the fragmentation of the file. USB is convenient but firewire and eSATA are faster and faster.

  • 250 GB USB external hard drive is compatible with Mac OS x on an iBook G4?

    Hello

I just bought a Toshiba 250 GB Usb external hard drive because the seller advised me telling me that it works in my iBook G4 Mac OSX computer.

I made it and I see it on my desktop with a folder called System Volume Information and 2.32 GB available.

I tried to copy a file and I got a message saying that the disk is not editable.

Where can I find the instructions to initialize if it's compatible?

    Thanks in advance,

  • Satellite L20-100 can be started from a USB external hard drive?

I recently bought Toshiba Satellite L20-100 and I wonder if:
    1. is it possible to boot this machine from a disk usb external drive?
    2. it is possible to attach another internal hard drive?

Assuming that the two answers above are 'no', how can we solve the following problem: I need hard drive space, I need to launch 3 systems of separate Wxp operating on the same machine (Toshiba Satellite L20-100).

You are right. The answer is no. Only thing you can do is to create 3 partitions and install on each a favorite OS. Using the Boot Manager, you will be able to choose one that fits in the beginning upward.

I would really appreciate the help. I own a satellite 1800-712. I have receently bought a usb external hard drive for some extra memory (IE Toshiba MK4026GAX USB Device)

When I connect it to my usb port it records any with the computer. The green light so there is power to the hard drive. The usb ports recognized of other fine features (a modem and memory stick)

I tried the external hard drive on a desktop pc and it works fine.

I have downloaded all windows xp service pack updates and updated my bios. Don't know what to do now.

Please help and thank you in advance!

    Hello

Although sometimes, I know that the OS is not able to recognize the external USB device, because the device external USB (HDD) consumes more energy than the 500mA.
The USB ports provide 500mA power and if the device needs more power so it s is not possible for the Windows operating system to recognize the external device.
You have an external power supply for the USB HDD? You should use it.

    Good bye

    Hi Philippe,.

Welcome to the Microsoft Community and thank you for the post about it

It seems that when you connect an external hard drive Seagate USB to your computer, there is no indication in the drive. I appreciate the action that you tried to solve the problem.

I would like to know the following information.

    (1) what version of Windows is currently installed on your computer?
    (2) have you tried to connect the hard drive to other USB ports?
    (3) you are able to use other USB devices?

I suggest you to connect the hard drive to another computer and check.

Your answers are important to us, please write to us with the requested information so that we can help more.

  • Computer laptop (Vista) does not take account any new working USB external hard drive

Hello, I'm under the latest version of Windows Vista Edition Home Premium on a Dell XPS M1210 and spin in the problems with the connection of my second USB external hard drive. In other words, when I plug the drive (a Seagate expansion 1 TB), nothing happens. Literally nothing, no notification of installation of the driver, no sound is played stating that the system recognized the device, no new entry in post working or disk management. I connected this drive on another computer running Windows 7 and it worked without a problem, so I do not suspect the problem to lie in the hard drive, but with my computer. My other external hard drive USB, a Maxtor Basics Portable 250 GB, works perfectly, but there more than two years. I bought the 1 TB Seagate as a backup and an upgrade, but I plan to go back now that there is nothing more than a big black Clipboard with a green LED clear too much room. What can I do about it?

    Hello

Most likely, there is not enough power for the USB port of your machine to the external device do recognize. As a test I would have you test the issue on another USB plug.

I recommend you contact you either OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) or the manufacturer of the motherboard if it is a machine of casting House and get the latest chipset drivers for your motherboard.

  • "Computer does not allocate a drive designation letter and is not displayed when windows Explorer opens to USB external drive.

Original title: problem connecting to USB external drive

I tried to install a 30 GB drive to Fireball over using a disk enclosure external hard Octigen SATA-USB 2.0 on an Acer Aspire T671 under Vista Premium computer. The system recorded new material, installs drivers and registers an entry on the massive safe removal as a "USB storage device" icon However, the computer does not allocate a drive designation letter and does not show the opening of windows Explorer.

The hard disk is configured as a master, as described in the user manual.

How can I make the computer recognize the drive and assign a drive letter?

    Thank you for the help

    Hi FAH300,

If you are not able to format the drive, there may be a hardware problem.

I suggest formatting the disk using the instructions linked by wb2001.

  • How can I disable the internal mouse pad when you use a USB external mouse

I want to disable the internal mousepad on my Dell laptop and use a mouse USB - external connected instead, because tapping the heat of my hands seems to move the cursor, if the letters and words are mixed.

    Hi Martyn,

Most laptops have a function key (FN) which can be used in combination with other keys for example FN + F2 or FN + F7 to disable or enable the touchpad.

If you are not able to disable using the function keys, then try the following steps.

To disable the touchpad in Device Manager, follow these steps:

    1. Click Start.
    2. In the start search box type devmgmt.msc, and then on enter.
    3. In Device Manager, expand mice and other pointing devices and locate the touchpad.
    4. Right click on the touchpad and click on the disable option.

Following the steps above should help you disable the touchpad.

  • Updating ESX 3i 5 - how add/detect a USB external storage on the host drive

I guess that this has been asked several times in the past, but I can't seem to get this to work for me.  All I want to do is use this USB external drive to back up files hard find in my volume of "datastore1".  I would like to implement a script, or even do it manually, where I tell you about my ESXi host just copy the files in VMFS volume in the external USB storage drive.

My physical server is a Dell PowerEdge 2950, and it uses ESX 3i update 5.  I use a 250 GB Maxtor One Touch II USB external storage device, and it has been formatted with NTFS.

Currently, I don't even know the controls able to detect this USB device.   I read only so that my drive to be recognized by the host, it must be ext3 or FAT32.  NTFS would be 'read only '.  I was hoping I could format the external drive through the ESXi (by command line), but maybe I'm deceiving myself.

    Thanks in advance

I'm sorry to say that you are trying is not possible - external USB are not usable by ESXi or ESX =

  • Change of keyboard USB external Apple connected to the Macbook Pro

    Dear ladies and gentlemen,

I need your help. I have a MacBook Pro running the last Sierra 17 "MacOS. I bought a 27 "Thunderbolt display and wanted to use a full external keyboard USB Apple (with the help of the digital keys). I have connected to the screen "USB port, closed down the internal screen MacBook... magic happened... keyboard poped office to the top of the screen external AND external full resolution was working properly..." Unfortunately only for 1-2 minutes, then the layout changed back irreversible in a layout resembling the layout if I would press "alt". Only way I could "resolve" to disconnect the keyboard USB plug and then plug again... but after 1-2 minutes did the same thing...

I tried to plug the USB plug into the MacBook Pro directly, but the same thing happened...

I am so unhappy that I can't use correctly the full length external Apple keyboard, large... Any hint/resolution?

Thank you for your help in advance,

    Péter

System Preferences > keyboard > Input Sources > [√] see Input menu in the menu bar

... then the menu icon before, choose «Show Keyboard Viewer»

Now, look at the chart of the keyboard that appears on the screen. If the Alt/Option key is stuck, the key will be gray, as if it is held down. If you press it again, he himself is not?

  • Toshiba Canvio USB external drive does not work well

I hope this is the right forum for this question
Please help me with my external hard drive, Toshiba Canvio usb e05a032bau2xk.

It worked fine, but not now.
My OS is win xp, sp3, home ed.

The Toshiba drive is more steady and is almost impossible to work with now. I checked with Device Manager that says the drive is working correctly.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled the driver, cleaned and Defrag the disk (when I was able to access) but it works still very badly now!

What else can I do to find out what is the problem with this Toshiba drive and return it works reliably?

  • Installation of Windows from CD-ROM, usb external for portege 2000

[b] how can I install windows all external usb on my portege 2000 CD-ROM

    Hello

It is a common situation for users without an internal optical drive.

My main advice is to install from the HARD disk instead of installing from a CD or a DVD.

How you reach this goal depends on your possibilities.
The most common solution is to boot the machine into the operating system already installed, copy the content from the installation media to a temporary folder on the local hard drive.
    Start the installation from there.

If you have a clean machine (no OS) then you must be able to boot from one of the supported devices:
FDD USB (USB HDD or USB CD).
