ESX 3.5 - RHEL 5.2 - do we need to restart the VM during the recovery of storage

Hello

We have a cluster of ESX 3.5 and RHEL 5.2 in our environment.

We have a situation to recover storage LUN of Redhat Linux 3.5. We took apart the file system.

but the team said ESX we need to reboot Linux host to remove the luns.it is a production company.

I'm new on ESX, can you please let me know if it is possible to remove the lunx nondisruptive storage.

Kind regards

Sylvie

Welcome to the Forums - to remove the virtual disks in ESX 3.5, you must power down the Virtual Machine - once virtuaql disks are deleted the LUN that uses ESX 3.5 to ethem tstor can be returned to the storage pool.

    Hello

Recently, I installed a server Dell OpenManage Essentials to monitor my ESX 5.0U1 hosts. I installed the VIB 7.1 via the Update Manager and everything was fine. I could detect and identify the hosts to OME and troubleshooting tool I could connect via WSMAN and retrieve all the details of the server. I also had the successfully servers send traps snmp on the server of the OME.

I didn't watch it all for a few weeks but noticed this morning that the OME server could no longer see any servers ESX and WSMAN wouldn't connect.  I want to restart the services/agents of dell on the ESX host computers without restarting the computer, but do not know the CLI commands. Could someone please.

    THX

I was on the phone with Dell's VMWare support last night for just this question.

Here restarts all the services management and worked for us.

We do not MOE, but OMSA on connections to remote VMWare host management is no longer accepted.  The following fixed it without a reboot of the host.

    restart the /sbin/services.sh

  • Close VMware ESX 3.5 & 4.0 hosts... What about the DRS?

    Hi experts,

Here I begin this discussion to know the following:

DRS configured as entirely not automated, no rules.

    Issues related to the:

What happens with DRS to deploy new virtual machines with Virtual Hardware 7?

They will receive only on ESX 4.0u2 hosts?

Could cause instability on the other virtual machines?

I raise this because I have no experience in mixed environments, and I expect the DRS feature so smart that moves and power on virtual machines on hosts that are able to manage virtual machines with virtual hardware that is compatible with, I'm so innocent?

Virtual machines with Virtual Hardware 4 can be moved throughout of these clusters 3.5 or 4.0, but what happens with VM with the newest virtual hardware?

If they had moved in any case on a host ESX 3.5, what will be the behavior of this virtual machine?

Last, but not least important, what do guys suggest to bypass this until I have all migrated hosts?
(Migration of all hosts will take more than a month, support and SLA issues, so I need a workaround solution)

Thanks in advance for your time and answers this!

  • ESX 4.1 and 4.1U1 - do I need to upgrade?

I recently noticed theres an ESX 4.1 update 1 on the list of downloadable products.

And then go to the main page to download and read the details of the ISO and the ZIP, it's vague as to whether or not it applies to 4.1 ESX host.

    given that refers only s pre 4.0 and 4.0 U1 4.1 upgrade.

We currently do not have the Update Manager gui app installed from what I can tell and im wondering what the best practices for the determination of the need to patch.

something that can analyze existing hosts to determine the necessary adjustments.

in the past, my experiences are to be updated simply offline using the iso on a dvd.

then use AUVS to upgrade hosts, to upgrade your clients must be vmotioned off the coast of the esx host as the host must be in service of update/install mode patches. You can use hostupdate if you have not installed VUM but I would recommend creating VUM if you can because it really makes your life so much easier when you have to update your hosts, the vmotools, the versions of hardware and install the third-party tools such as powerpath

  • Restart VM after you restart the ESX host

    Hi all

    I am using VSphere Enterprise.

Here my little question, makes VMs always restart after back us running or stopping of the esx host?

In esx 3.5, when I reboot an esx host, all the virtual machines in this host are still alive (without restarting).

    Pls advice

    Thank you

The only way, a virtual machine can rest running when it is running on ESX server is restarted is that if FT is activated - in this case, the connections will be seamless switch to the virtual machine "shadow". This is a feature of vSphere, so I don't see how you did not the VMs restart on your ESX 3.5 - even with VMware HA environment, there will be a short break because the VMs will be will be running on the other nodes in the cluster.

  • FQDNs for ESX environment when DNS servers are VMS within the ESX environment

    Hello

    I was wondering,

When the implementation of a new infrastructure from scratch, with an ESX cluster from scratch

and when the servers DNS themselves will run inside the cluster,

Then, it is advisable to use IP addresses instead of the domain name COMPLETE for the right ESX environment?

Here's what I've done so far:

    -installed 1 ESX host

    -installed donain controller as VM

    -installed PSC and VCSA

    -created the new cluster

-installed the second ESX host, added to the cluster.

I installed a VM DC as the first thing after the installation of the initial ESX host, I could have started using the domain name COMPLETE for the ESX environment at this time.

    However, I didn't do it.

For installation of the VCSA and when you add ESX hosts to the cluster, I used IP addresses instead of the FQDN names.

It seems stupid and dangerous for me to use domain COMPLETE the ESX hosts themselves, because the domain controller is running in the cluster.

So I used IP addresses only to ensure the ESX HA cluster and the characteristics of heartbeat stay ok if something were to happen to the DNS server.

However, the VCSA installation and when you add hosts to the cluster,.

the MISTLETOE gave me a warning, indicating that it is preferable to provide a FULL domain instead of an IP address name.

I am of the opinion that if you have no physical DNS servers, it is not a good idea.

My opinion is that when your nameservers inside the ESX cluster itself and you do not have 2 redundant external DNS servers, so it is not wise to use the FQDN for your ESX hosts, PSC and VCSA setup.

In my view, using the property intellectual property is much safer in this case.

I was wondering what is your angle on it.

Do you see the same way, or have different opinions?

    Hi smetter,.

It is advisable to have a working DNS for vSphere environment however the use of DNS for things like vSphere HA have been removed in more recent versions of the product. Refer to the section of the guidelines of the general network of this document for more details: https://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/techpaper/vmw-vsphere-high-availability.pdf

With this in mind I wouldn't be worried about use of FULL domain for the addition of services like the ESX host, etc.. Failure where HA would be restarting the virtual computer, there is no dependency on DNS so it will continue to work as expected and, subject to the availability of resources the virtual machine starts on another host.

According to your vSphere licenses, you may also like to consider the implementation of anti-affinity DRS VM to keep your DNS Appart servers and on different hosts. This can prevent your servers DNS are declining when the failure of a host. You must have Enterprise edition or later for this.

    Kind regards.

  • Files ESX - read-only

    Hello

Is there a way to read any file ESX, I want through the provided API. With respect to my research, I have found no api for read only access to all ESX file I want.

    What I'm looking at is-

An ability to access the files ESX to read some of the configurations, specifically, I'm looking to read the pam settings and ssh setup an ESX host. What I want to achieve by connecting to the virtual server of the ESX host Management Center.

I looked on the web access list and alive to the ESX host, they do not seem to offer what I want to achieve. Please advice if there are approaches to access the files to esx. I also checked the vCli, the cli of the power, and the esxcli, I would if I had missed something.

    Thanks for the pointers.

    Kind regards

    Tripard

You will need to restart the service pass so that the changes take effect. Run the following command "/etc/init.d/hostd restart" and then when you refresh the page, you should now see the new file

  • Reboot ESX with MSCS Cluster nodes

    Hello

I have an ESX Cluster that must be restarded. This host cluster to a MSCS Cluster (without recommendations affinity VMWARE DRS...).

    What is the best practice?

-Keep maintenance mode, as the other VMS running vmotion or,

-Set the DRS affinity as soon as possible and the node of MSCS Cluster stop when necessary (only comments stop or other actions to do before?) or,

    -Any other idea?

    Thank you

Should not able to vmotion for DRS wikll MSCS cluster node does not work - strting with the ESX host that has the standby node place it in Maintenance mode and manually knew node MSCS nodes - restart the host ESXi get node maintenance - once it is up and the lcuster MSCS is stable - the main failover node MSCS and shute to the bottom of the virtual machine - place this host ESX to Maintanance mode allowinf DRS to evacuate VMS running - restart the ESX host brings the VM MSCS back up and replace the workload in this node MSCS.

  • ESX host must restart?

I'm confused as to why would need a host ESX reboot in order to change the number of ports on an existing virtual switch.  I read it wrong.  A virtual switch can have maps of physical network (natachasery) added and deleted without a reboot - I did yesterday.  A virtual switch can have VLAN extra added without a reboot.  Did - it mean if the ESX host has an additional physical nic added to the HOST, then a reboot may be required?

I must be confused about the word 'port', but under properties vSwitch in vCenter, the Ports tab has 'Add' gives you a chance to create a group of ports (VM, VMkernel, Console of Service).

VCPs and VCPs in gestation, can clarify you?

    see you soon,

    KC

The vSphere Client will show a standard vSwitch with a default value of 120 (4.1) or 56 (4.0) ports, and you will need to restart the host so that any change to this effect to take parameter. This is true of standard vSwitches, distributed vSwitches can be changed on the fly. There are many other differences between standard vSwitches and distributed vSwitches, for the rest of this answer, I will only talk about standard vSwitches.

Just like a physical switch, a virtual switch is composed of a number of ports, ports on a virtual switch can be used by the virtual machines, the VMkernel and the Service Console (ESX only). Virtual ports are always grouped into a group of ports - port group can contain a single port or multiple ports. A group of ports for virtual machines is not a set number of ports, ports are dynamically assigned to the Group of ports that you turn on virtual machines that have their network card configured to use the port group. You can connect the network adapters on multiple virtual machines on the same port group, a group of ports used by virtual machines can contain multiple ports. Ports used by the VMkernel and Service Console are only ever make up a single port because there is never a single virtual connection for them. Port groups have various attributed assigned to them on their safety, Traffic Shaping and NIC Teaming tabs, as well as their VLAN name.

Why the host does not require a reboot? It has everything just...

    Scott.
