ESX host must restart?

I'm confused as to why would need a host ESX reboot in order to change the number of ports on an existing virtual switch.  I read it wrong.  A virtual switch can have maps of physical network (natachasery) added and deleted without a reboot - I did yesterday.  A virtual switch can have VLAN extra added without a reboot.  Did - it mean if the ESX host has an additional physical nic added to the HOST, then a reboot may be required?

I must be confused about the word 'port', but under properties vSwitch in vCenter, the Ports tab has 'Add' gives you a chance to create a group of ports (VM, VMkernel, Console of Service).

VCPs and VCPs in gestation, can clarify you?

see you soon,

KC

The vSphere Client will show a standard vSwitch with a default value of 120 (4.1) or 56 (4.0) ports, and you will need to restart the host so that any change to this effect to take parameter. This is true of standard vSwitches, distributed vSwitches can be changed on the fly. There are many other differences between standard vSwitches and distributed vSwitches, for the rest of this answer, I will only talk about standard vSwitches.

Just like a physical switch, a virtual switch is composed of a number of ports, ports on a virtual switch can be used by the virtual machines, the VMkernel and the Service Console (ESX only). Virtual ports are always grouped into a group of ports - port group can contain a single port or multiple ports. A group of ports for virtual machines is not a set number of ports, ports are dynamically assigned to the Group of ports that you turn on virtual machines that have their network card configured to use the port group. You can connect the network adapters on multiple virtual machines on the same port group, a group of ports used by virtual machines can contain multiple ports. Ports used by the VMkernel and Service Console are only ever make up a single port because there is never a single virtual connection for them. Port groups have various attributed assigned to them on their safety, Traffic Shaping and NIC Teaming tabs, as well as their VLAN name.

Why the host does not require a reboot? It has everything just...

Scott.

  • b/w esx hosts VMotion using CF Storage share.

Hi, I wanted to know the esx communicate anything to the storage when its doing a vmotion. Lets say I make a vmotion between 2 esxi hosts share the same storage. I have a private just vnic to vmotion and a separate management and logging FT.  My vmkernel default gateway is the management of vnic. I do all the fiber channel for the shared storage.

Once a vmotion over, the new esx host must tell the storage that the vm now lives on me. If storage is all CF, how do?

Yes, locks are on the VMFS file system, so the connection of storage is used.

  • ESX host has a virtual machine that must be behind a physical firewall

We have several hosts of ESXi.  Some are standard ver3.5, while others are standard ver4.1.  All guests of stand alone.

A host ESX ver3.5 has 6 virtual computers assigned to the network port of the single on a vSwitch stand-alone virtual computer group.   This switch has 3 uplinks.

One of the virtual machines must place the physical while the rest remains in front of the firewall as well as the ESX host firewall.   I am told that this can be done by assigning one of of the uplinks to a subnet that is behind the firewall.  And this is the best way to manage it.   My question is: is it possible?   My experience limited with physical firewall and what knowledge I have of VI3, we would need to create a separate vSwitch to do this and assign the VM to these switches... and that's if the uplink can be assigned to a physical switch that connects to another switch behind the firewall (I think).

Something doesn't seem quite in here... I'm not sure it will work.

Sounds good to me. If it is a separate physical switch to connect, then you will need an additional vSwitch. If it's just a separate VLAN you could - depending on your current configuration (VST) - just create a new port with the appropriate VLAN ID configured Group.

  • You can restart nfs storage WITHOUT having to reboot ESX host?

    Hi community

I wanted to know what your experience has been reset to the nfs storage devices WITHOUT having to restart the ESX servers. I can stop the virtual machines that use the storage, but would like to avoid off ESX hosts as they require a visit to the data center for put in operation and I can do all the rest of the House.

My options are either then restart the ESX host (that I can do it remotely of course) or the ESX Server restores in the nfs storage when it is up?

This is the first time such a restart will be required so I use

this as a learning experience and the VMs on those ESX hosts are not

criticism.  (although don't tell users which.) )

    Thanks in advance

    Yes, of course you can.

ESXes automatically reverts to the storage.

  • Restart VM after you restart the ESX host

    Hi all

    I am using VSphere Enterprise.

Here my little question, makes VMs always restart after back us running or stopping of the esx host?

In esx 3.5, when I reboot an esx host, all the virtual machines in this host are still alive (without restarting).

    Pls advice

    Thank you

The only way, a virtual machine can rest running when it is running on ESX server is restarted is that if FT is activated - in this case, the connections will be seamless switch to the virtual machine "shadow". This is a feature of vSphere, so I don't see how you did not the VMs restart on your ESX 3.5 - even with VMware HA environment, there will be a short break because the VMs will be will be running on the other nodes in the cluster.

  • How to restart vm esx host in different work HA?

I understand that VMOTION = migration hot virtual machines on esx hosts. So, if HA uses VMOTION, how HA restarts VMs on another esx host when the original, we're out of service?

I guess it will take to create an another vm on the available host using the same on the san .vmx file?

IF we were to do it manually, it will be just import a virtual machine to another host on the right?

    Correct me if im wrong?

A bit confused on the works of the HA behind the scene

    See you soon!

VMotion and HA are not related or dependent on each other.

    (1) again, this works because the virtual machines themselves live on storage shared and not bound to a specific host ESX (i). ESX implements non-persistent locks on a specific virtual machine, when the host goes down, these locks will eventually timeout. HA will launch the failover, allowing it to reregister the VMs failed and restart. Manually, you can walk through this process by the presence of a virtual machine that lives on the shared storage that runs on HostA, then it turned off and cancel the registration of the virtual machine. You would be so I re-register on HostB and turn on, and voila, you've just simulated a ghettoHA.

Here are a few extra links/documentation which may be useful for you better understand it:

    HA said:

    http://www.VMware.com/products/VI/VC/HA.html

    vMotion explained:

    http://www.VMware.com/products/VI/VC/VMotion.html

    http://www.VMware.com/PDF/vmotion_datasheet.PDF

    (2) vMotion as you know already, performs a live migration of a virtual computer between two hosts, where as HA you will get some downtime of the virtual machine while it is rescued. The key is HA doesn't provide true high availability, it's just faster to recover. If you are looking for a true HA, take a look at VMware FT www.vmware.com/files/pdf/resources/ft_virtualization_wp.pdf

  • ESX host cannot ping the default gateway.

    Hi Experts,

I have connected ESX hosts to switch cisco as well by the ILO and other ports.

    Cisco switch configuration;

int gig 1/0/21 and 1/0/13 gig and gig 1/0/14 are configured as access ports because they are carriers/tagging vLan as a 306.

Cisco switch, I can ping the ip address of the ILO, but I can't ping the IP address management and vice versa.

    IP Managment

    10.197.204.10

    255.255.255.0

    10.197.204.1

    VLAN 306

Attached the screenshot shown in the diagram.

    your help will be appreciated.

    Concerning

Don't know what it is, but there must be something simple that you miss

Let's go through each step of configuration for both ESXi network connections (ILO work already, so we do not touch).

Check the configuration of switch port physical interface GigabitEthernet1/0/13 and 1/0/14.

    switchport access vlan 306

    switchport mode access

    spanning tree portfast

Only connect the cable network for vmnic0 to host and make sure what vmnic0 presents itself as 'connected' in the DCUI

Make sure the VLAN ID is empty.

Make sure you then the IP settings are correct (IE without typos,...) and restart the management network from the main menu.

  • Changing the DNS server for ESX hosts?

Our network administrator will change the IP address of the DNS server.  In this way, we will change those corresponding to ESX hosts.

    We would like to know

    (1) can we change the DNS server on execution of the ESX hosts without going into maintenance mode?

    (2) under what circumstances the ESX host will do use DNS servers?

    (3) memory, we should add all the IP addresses of ESX host in the hosts file in the Service Console, where is this hosts file located at?

    Thank you

    Tony,

Use "service network restart" command to restart the network service

    Do not forget also that...

Very dependent on DNS HA, HA will not work without the correct DNS configuration. The servers ESX and vCenter server must be able to resolve the name (FQDN full) / IPs in both feel to get a working HA.

  • HA/DRS and a Cluster of 10 ESX host

    Hello

I would appreciate comments on best practices for HA and DRS configuration on the following configuration:

    • We have a cluster of 10 ESX host

    • 2 guests are related ONLY to datastore1

    • 8 guests are related ONLY to datastore2

    • All hosts are available and active in Lab Manager 3.02

    • We use no fences of network

    The questions are:

    1. If one of the hosts in the 'group' of 8 guests above fails, HA will restart the virtual machines on the 7 remaining or it will try to start on one of the 2 hosts in the different 'group' (which have no connectivity to datastore2). Please note that I use the term "group" to highlight the hosts connected to separate data warehouses.

    2. can we or must activate us DRS about this group in a perspective of Lab Manager? Even if we have a maximum of 8 hosts connected on the same VMFS volume, are we exceeding any rule DRS here?

    Thank you

    gogogo5

My best guess is that most should all magically work.

DRS won't even try to break you, he will always recommend you only migrants who are indeed possible.

Yes, normally I too would advocate this split into two different groups, but with the problem, they do not need to be joined (you have configurations for which a VM MUST go on 2 and the rest MUST go to the 8, and indeed, LM will refuse to cross pools of resources to achieve).

If disable you completely the DRS, LabManager uses a variant of the old (pre - 3.0) algorithms to try to find the compatible host less loaded (at deploy time) and put it there.

I'm too uncertain and curious about the HA situation. I have a feeling would be deeply confused on a default installation, it could be implemented, but it would be difficult to make the right constraints.

  • New ESX host cannot see SAN fiber - Clariion

    Hello

I spent about two hours, passing through communities and have tried various things without success... basically, I have a new ESX host that I've built, configured, and networked, but I can't see our existing SAN.

The SAN is a Clariion CX3 - 10 c and it hosts all of our existing VMs (we currently have two hosts attached to the SAN)

I have installed the CLI and Navisphere agent on the new host

I have started to host and that you have ENABLED the two adapters Emulex HBA (host contains two HBAs installed) because they showed as disabled by default BIOS

I have one of the HBAs connected to the fibre switch

On the fibre switch, I have a flickering green light where I plugged the fiber cable, which makes me think, it is connected OK

On the HBA, I have a green light and an orange light blink, which still makes me think the wiring is correct

BUT I do not see the front Navisphere host, and the host cannot see all storage even after re-reading.

Any ideas what to try next? I suspect that it is perhaps something to do with zoning - I must say the Emulex HBA how to find storage processors? If so, how can I go about it? From the BIOS by restarting the host and pressing ALT - E?

    Any help or advice appreciated...

Assuming that hard zoning this site should provide you with some

    Help

    http://TechNotes.twosmallcoins.com/?p=16

Also once the switch is zoned if the host is not listed on

the Clariion Navisphere agent system has a config file that needs to be updated

with the IP addresses of the SPs.

You can also manually enter the host if necessary, but your

    probably zoning question.

  • ESX host is listed in DVSwitch, but not in DVportgroups

    Hello

I have the following in a CLuster (5.5 Vcenter, ESXi hosts 5.1) problem:

I added a new ESX to the cluster (number 9 of ESX), then added 4 network cards to the DVSwitch (uses the LACP Protocol).

In this DVSwitch I 2 DVportGroups / tag VLAN

The problem is the host is listed in the tab "Hosts" in VCenter to level DVSwicth, but do not appear in the DVportgroups tabs (all hosts are listed here but not the last one..)

vmk0 migrated successfully to the VLAN 1 St... but now, it appears limited to ""... I can migrate to the DVportGroup right... and VCenter says 'ok'... but nothing changes...

I tried to migrate a virtual machine on the ESX (2nd VLAN) = > VM pings OK...

So "technically" it works very well... but the ESX does NOT appear as members of DVportGroup.

The problem appeared when I tried to deploy a vApp (antivirus) on the ESX... I'm stuck at the "select VLANS for the NETWORK card"... There is no VIRTUAL LAN in the list... (because the ESX host is no not part of any dvportgroup..)

I tried "adding the ESX to the DVportGroup" after having asked for credentials, VCenter says 'ESX is already part of the pole '...

    Someone had this strange behavior?

    What can I do?

    Help!

    Best regards

    S

I had a similar case, where the hosts have been posted under DVS, but not under DVS exchanges.

A restart of vCenter Service fixed the problem. However, I was not deploy any TIME or such.

  • Adding data to the ESX host store

    Hi all

We are automating the process of adding data to the esx host store. We have all the necessary inputs as a host, Cluster, data center, data store name, store (VMFS) Pat data.

Do we have the cmdlets to get the result? What is the data store should be added after the configuration of the network?

We need confirm that the data store must be there in vcenter/Cluster?

If the LUNS on which these data warehouses are defined are zoned and correctly configured as a shared, they become automatically visible on the ESXi node.

  • ESX host is not responding

    Hello

    now, I have a problem.

    a customer has 3 blade IBM HS23.

because in the course of the last 7 months I had 4 times the host esx became offline / insensitive

all the vm continue to operate therefore continues to operate production

ESX host do not react on SSH connection or telnet

I can connect after pressing F2 and F12, but then the host everything crashes

I can't connect to the vi to the ESX host client either.

all hosts are installed on the IBM's USB drive

the only thing to solve it is to off the blades and start again

also random sound. I had 3 months running good, good running 1 day and 3 weeks running good

the vpxd.log file displays only the waiting times to communicate with the esx host and then the error offline

already updated all my firmware (chasis, blades, storage, fiber brocade and IBM switches)

I started with vsphere 5.5 u1 U1 and ESXI 5.5 IBM. already updates on vsphere 5.5 U2 and 5.5 ESXi vmware u2 (since ibm doesn't have an ESXi custom 5.5 u2)

im stuck... lil last event is on 16/01/2015 (and ibm will not support since there only subscription for 3 years and no software support contract)

one last point, I'm under bacup veeam and 7.x replication but don't see a problem there.

    Thanks in advance.

    I found the problem

I've restarted only iSCSI data store and all ESXi hosts becomes sensitive

so, after searching for the qnap forum I noticed that they have released an update on 29/01/2015

test of the firmware now and see what happens

If this fails, I guess the qnap ts - 469L is not taken in charge more for vsphere 5.5

Thank you all for the suggestions

  • Reboot the ESX host as possible while on VM snapshots exist?

Can you safely do a reboot of a host ESX VM there was on this host which are off (of course), but have a snapshot exists at this time?

Because we restart some ESX host but you also have to install some Windows updates on the virtual machine on these hosts. Normally, we take a snapshot of the WM, install updates, restart, check if everything is working fine, and then remove the snapshot. But after a reboot the ESX host we also check if the VM have started and are working very well. In this case, it would cost me 2 restart and check for WM

When I could do the snapshots, installation of updates, power off the virtual machine, reboot the ESX host, turn on the virtual machine, all check and then delete the snapshots, it saves me time. Only thing I don't know and can't find is so it record to make a snapshot is by restarting the EX host and if the snapshot can be deleted after reboot normally.

    Welcome to the community,

don't worry, a restart of the host is quite VMs, regardless of whether they are active or not snapshots.

  • A server Vcenter 4.1.0 coexist with 5.1.1 ESX hosts

    Hello

I was planning on upgrading my VMware environment, but I just noticed that my vcenter server running 4.1.0 is enough CPU to run 5.1.

Is it still possible to upgrade my hosts to 5.1.1 so that I can use the latest etc. operating systems or this will cause my unstable environment.

    any advice is greatly appericated.

    Thank you

vCenter 4.1 can not handle 5.1 ESX hosts.

First vCenter Server must be upgraded to 5.1 and then upgrade hosts to 5.1. So that vCenter can manage the hosts in full transparency.
