ESX 4.1 to 5.5 upgrade process & path

Can someone point me in the right direction regarding the upgrade from 4.1 to 5.5.  Is there a direct upgrade path?  Or should I first put to 5.0?

Also, what are some of the common questions admins have met?  Bugs and workarounds?

Any comments would be much appreciated.

Artemis

You can go directly to the version of vSphere, ESXi 5.5, this is a path entirely supported, see: VMware product interoperability Matrices

Here is an article with the methods that you can use to do this update: VMware KB: methods of upgrade to ESXi 5.5

Note that if your ESXi hosts vSphere are managed by vCenter Server, you must upgrade your vCenter Server server to version 5.5 before upgrading your hosts.

  • Local virtual machines VMFS (upgrade process)

    Hi all

I would like to upgrade an an esx 3.5 esx 4 (both in local drives). The VMFS data with machines store virtual esx 3.5 (4 material) should be kept. And the question is, will the upgrade process (by using the upgrade utility-vsphere host client) crush the local VMFS?

    Thanks in advance.

No, it uses the same version of VMFS. Your guests are kept. When the server is upgraded, you must update VMWare, and virtual hardware tools.

  • Lab Manager 4.0.2 upgrade process

    Say for 4.0.2 release notes

"before you can upgrade Lab Manager, you must upgrade the vCenter server.

See the Lab Manager 4.0 Installation and Upgrade Guide for

    more information. »

I watched the Installation and the Guide to upgrade for more information, but nothing is mentioned about the upgrade to vCenter 4.1.  Lab Manager 4.0.2 does support vCenter 4.0 Update1/2?  I think so but I would make sure before that I upgrade.   Here are my planned upgrade steps:

    1. put at manager level of laboratory 4.0.1 to 4.0.2

    2. turn to level vCenter 4.0 U1 to 4.1

    3 upgrade ESX 4 U2 to ESX 4.1

    is this supported?

Director of the laboratory of 4.0.2 is backward compatible with vCenter 4.0 u2/u1/GA

Regarding the upgrade process, unless you are already on a 64-bit operating system, then there's leg work to do the upgrade to vCenter himself.

If you are already there, then it is fine.  LM may be the first in this situation.

If you need to migrate vCenter, so long that the INVESTIGATION period change in fact... it is good.  If it does not change, you can tell the LM Wizard to change the IP address of vcenter.

If you forget to change it, you can simply update the web UI of LM.

overall, LM must be quite tolerant changes when you go in LM 4.0.2.

I have windows 7 key to business, how can upgrade to windows 10. I see that it is not included in the upgrade process.

In some forum I read, I can upgrade with a small charge for windows 7 ultimate, and after that I can move on to W10. Someone can tell me where and how do I upgrade to W7Ultimate?

    Thank you

Windows 7 Enterprise is a volume license customer, it is not eligible for the free upgrade offer. If you have Windows 7 Enterprise through your employer, contact the network administrator or your Help Desk Support staff for more information on the upgrade to Windows 10 company.

If you need Windows 10, you can purchase one license other wise, then perform a custom installation. You will need to reinstall the drivers and applications and also to save your personal files.

Try temporarily disabling your Antivirus utility and try again.

If the transaction went through, you can retrieve your product key, try the upgrade manually:

Go to the order summary page, you can find your product key:

    https://www.mswos.com/

Press the Windows key + X

    Click System

    On Windows, click the link:

    1. simply download: upgrade-from-ESX4.0-to-4.1.0-0.0.260247-release.zip

    2 use VUM guests 4.0 to 4.1.

  • ESX 3.0 to 3.5 upgrade and new WITHOUT

Our courses VMware environment consists of 2 ESX 3.0.1 hosts with VMotion. They share the storage on a San. Another physical server is used for Virtual Center 2.0.1. The whole environment was not properly Setup and we want to essentially from scratch, moving to ESX 3.5 U3 as well as to move the servers to another data center and a new NO. Our current plan is as follows:

Updated current host ESX 3.5 U3 and Virtual Center 2.5.

Install ESX 3.5 U3 on another temporary host, and move all the guests to this host.

Physically move the two ESX servers to the new data center and conenct again WITHOUT.

Make a fresh installation of ESX 3.5 U3 on hosts, configure new environment, test VMotion and ensure that everything works.

Move the temporary host to the new ESX environment guests.

Y at - it no gotcha with this plan. We want to use the 30 day ESX 3.5 trial on our temporary host, because we only licenses for 2 guests and only need to this host for migration as a temporary location to permanently keep our VM customers.

Looks pretty good, though, migration will provide less downtime by comparing the upgrade on the spot.  Be SURE to backup your virtual machines before.  New ESX 3.5 installation would be nice, unless you want to keep the old performance data.

    1. install VC 2.5 from scratch with database thus created VUM.

    2. install ESX 3.5 U3 and configure all settings and networking.

3 configure the cluster HA, VMotion and DRS.

    4. disconnect the ESx 3.0.2 cluster hosts and add new cluster ESX 3.5 and VMware Tools upgrade

5 perform the same procedures until everything has been on ESX 3.5 U3.

  • On the 11i upgrade process

    Hi all

I have a few questions about the upgrade process, we have Applications 11.5.10.2 on 9.2.0.8 database installed on IBM AIX 5.3 Server.

As you know extended support requires patches for applications and data base. My first question is; should I upgrade database to 10g or 11g, is there an advantage of the differences between them, all interoperability issues?

My second question is should I do upgrade the databases first or after patches of applications according to the note: 883202.1 (reference Patch minimum prerequisites for Support extended on Oracle eBusiness Suite 11.5.10)?

And my last question is; I tried running DBUA and DBCA just for the test but two files point to same ORACLE_HOME and hurt, I can fix these files but I think that other dependent files will also point wrongly ORACLE_HOME, is it a utility (autoconfig?) to fix these files?

Thanks a lot for your help

  • Upgrade process 2.2 and 2.3

Is there a process to upgrade from 2.2 to 2.3 meter use vCloud. I guess this is a minor update, because there is not an increase in the number of major version. I would not mind setting up a new server, but I don't know what to do to be reported. I can't plan the upgrade at midnight on the end of the month, so it would be somewhat need to old and new versions. I have found no guidance for this on the page download or these forums, but if I forgot something, please direct me to it.

We have a version of the patch coming out in the next weeks which will include a place in upgrade from version 2.2 to version 2.3.

It also includes some other minor changes as a patch for ESX 3.5 hosts and vCenter Server 4.0, zip code and the country to add to the report of client, SMTP fixes for specific email servers and validation of the email for automatic reports.

  • Upgrade process

    Hey guys,.

I have currently a cluster of ESXi hosts 3.5U3 I'm looking to upgrade to 4.0U1.

KB1016262 of reading, it seems that my approach will have to apply a patch. Since this seems to be a patch for ESX4.0 and best practice is to upgrade vCenter before upgrading ESX, the recommendation seems to be a long process:

    • Go vCenter to 4.0

    • ESXi 4.0 upgrade

    • Apply the specific fix to ESXi

    • Last upgrade vCenter for 4.0U1

    • Patch ESXi

I've experienced the bug in our test environment, and what I understand, that it will not affect, for example, the host update service to connect to a server and upgrade. Is there a reason I can't do just this:

    • Put the hosts in maintenance mode

    • Last upgrade vCenter for 4.0U1

    • Upgrade to ESXi ESXi - 4.0.0 - 1.9.208167 - upgrade - release.zip to ESXi4.0U1 with

It is much less updates and reboots, and experience in our laboratory has been that each update/patch took some time, and I really want to minimize downtime.

PS, final step that I use VMCLI to apply the hp - esxi4.0uX - bundle - 1.2.zip.

    1. you don't have to put hosts in maintenance mode during upgrade to vCenter.

    2. you can go directly to vCenter 4u1 without 4.0.

    3. use of the update to upgrade Manager ESXi is 4u1.

    4. apply all patches released after 4u1.

  • VMware tools and host of virtual hardware upgrade process

We currently have 8 guests esx4 we plan to upgrade to esxi5.  Our downtime window is relatively low.  We should have sufficient time to upgrade all hosts, but I'm not so sure that we will be able to get all the vm tools and equipment as well updated.  Is there a common question VMs on the older virtual hardware and vm versions tools until our next maintenance window?

Or would it be best to try to get half of the hosts and all the computers upgraded this time and the other half next time?  We have not all hosts the value automatically vmotion machines so that they remain in place unless you have an accident.  In addition, in this scenario is any problem to launch half esx4 and the other half to esxi5?

Any advice or ideas would be appreciated.

    Thank you

    Steve Hrabak

Is there a common question VMs on the older virtual hardware and vm versions tools until our next maintenance window?

There is no problem.  Your guests will not be able to take advantage of some of the new features added with vHardware 8, but as they are upgraded they will be.

    http://www.VMware.com/support/vsphere5/doc/vSphere-ESX-vCenter-Server-50-new-features.html

y at - it no problem running esx4 half and half to esxi5

No worries there, too.  The only thing that you must do is upgrade to VMFS5.  The bed and breakfast vSphere5 no cannot be able to see a LUN VMFS5, but everyone can see and use a LUN VMFS3

  • ESX 3.5 to 4.1 upgrade - advise

Need help on how to upgrade ESX 3.5 to 4.1

    Here's the scenario:

    • We have 4 ESX 3.5 standalone host running free version of esx - "VMware ESX Server 3i 3.5.0 build-153875.
    • All 4 hosts connected to shared storage (NFS) NETAPP
    • We have a separate environment where we have bunch of esxi 4.1 servers and Virtual Center server 4.1
    • I can't add 3.5 servers to existing VC because they are free and there is no license server in new infrastructure.
    • These two environments have their separate shared storage (nfs)
    • I want to upgrade from 3.5 to 4.1 servers (we lic esxi 4.1) and add them as a cluster of 4 servers to article 4.1 of the existing VC
    • Please tell us how a. would improve 3.5 to 4.1 and b.      Add them to existing VC.

    Thank you.

You can add NFS to share this ESX 3.5 Server ESXi 4.1 servers? If you can - then for each ESX 3.5 server power down the virtual machines and remove them from the inventory - on one of the ESXi 4.1 Add the itsinventory of VMto - once the host ESX 3.5 is empty rebuld with 4.1 and add to the vCenter environment and backward the VMs - repeat until all hosts are upgraded
