ESX server 3i 3.5.0 raid failure

Hi all

I guess this has been asked before, but I see nothing that quite matches the point, that I am now.

I was running from ESX willingly until this week, it seems that undergo a 3 discs on a Bay raid 5 3 everything all at the same time, I managed. The system would start and run for a while but would eventually fall. I copied all the data store of data through the client Infrastructure to a Workstation window, I'm not sure how to back these virtual machines on and running to a new installation of ESX, as it seems that when the copy of the files have been renamed? It seems not as simple as the copy of the stuff in the new data store.

Concerning

You can do it the same way that you have downloaded the files. Open the browser of data store, create a new folder with the name of the virtual machine and download the files in this folder. Once downloaded, right-click on the vmx file and select Add to the inventory.

  • Implementation of the array for esx server

    Hello everyone:

This is my first post here, and I'm a newcomer to virtualization. I've seen given the task of putting in place an esx server. Now, I need to configure a processor computer double hearts HP DL380. I need to set up a 20 GB partition for esx and the rest of the disk space for the second partition for the VMs.

My question is, what is the best configuration of raid for this scenario.

    Thank you.

The best option will be to go for RAID 5 (HP RAID DDG), if you want a higher level of redendany (2 disk failures) go for RAID ADG (RAID 6). I recommend that you create a table and two driving logic. A first for the ESX operating system and second to the VMFS. VMFS to allocate a larger share.

  • Specification of disk for the ESX Server

I set up a new ESX Server.  Internal drives will be used for ESX - no data warehouses.  Complete 7.2 K rpm SATA drives (RAID-1), or is there an advantage to walk up to the 15 K RPM SAS drives?

ESXi does not fast disks (or any disk at all). You can even install ESXi on a USB stick or SD card. Once loaded, ESXi running in memory and only to rewrite the disk configuration changes.

  • Shut down or migrate VM offline (on a disconnected ESX Server)

We have 4 ESX servers in our infrastructure. After a failure of three of them under tension, but there is not (esx-02).

On this host, we have virtual machine called f12-dns-02. Now esx - 02 is disconnected, but this always considered virtual machineis as running, why?

We can't stop it or move to another host (each option is disabled).

How can turn us this machine to another esx Server?

The virtual machine must be registed for this ESX host running vmware-cmd commands. and if you are in the directory of the virtual machine then you can use #vmware - cmd vm.vmx stop

    #vmware - cmd vm.vmx stophard

If the second command does not work, try again with a space between the stop and hard

So without the SSH access, I think that what you use is device of vMA.

I have install ESX on my first server.

Because of the problem on the motherboard, I put hard disks that stood on the raid1 in to another server in x 3550 IBM.

After the reconstruction of hard drive (raid 1) and when ESX started, I saw a strange legend.

  • ESX Server performance

Hi all, first post on VM Community Council.

I use the PC for about 2 years and I start looking to ESX server.

One thing, I want to clarify the performance issue.

This is a case that I got here:

We have 3 Dell PowerEdge 2900 III with exactly the same hardware configuration:

    • 1 quad Core Intel® Xeon® E5450, 2x6MB Cache, 3.0 GHz, 1333 MHz FSB

    • 4 GB 667 MHz (4x1Go), DIMMs unique access

    • Windows 2003 Enterprise Server

    An application server

    Only one DB server

A single server for 'other' purposes

We need to reproduce the same configuration 3 times.

So instead of buying new hardware, it would be realistic to install ESX server on each server and to create 3 VMs (with the same specifications of 'material' as their original conterpart) per server and still get a reasonable rate of return?

As I said I'm not currently using ESX and I couldn't find a 'clear' answer to my question...

If you need more information, please ask me... or don't hesitate to 'redirect' me to any specific post / thread / doc.

As mentioned above, I would look to increase the physical RAM in each of at least 8 GB.  RAM for these inexpensive boxes looks - £160 of Crucial for 8 GB, a bit more than Dell is no doubt.

Also the RAID controller in each server must have cache battery backed on this subject, so that may need to add more.

Please give points for any helpful answer.

  • Cannot ping my esx Server

    Hi all

I hope you can help, this problem has been driving me crazy for some Richard now!

Firstly a bit of history... We have a Compaq ML760 running esx 3.0.1 attached to 2 SCSI disk bays. On weekends, this system was powered down by our partners to outsource in replacement of the ups in the rack. When turning the power on it we lost communication with the inverter boards... a new case, few new readers and reconstruction of the RAID the latter we have an ESX that starts in the log on screen with no obvious errors.

So, the problem is that since we cannot ping or connect to any other way of our ESX Server. Now, before that I have to go any further in my opinion, it is worth noting that I'm not an expert of linux/esx I know enough to login as root and run a few commands.

I have read several discussions around this issue and none seem to apply to my situation. Not only did I not ping my ESX, when I log into the ESX I can't ping any device, even the entry door. I had a quick glance at the configuration (should not have changed during the upgrade of the UPS!) and everything looks ok to me, feel free to correct me, the info is here:! esxcfg-NICS. JPG!

    any ideas would be appreciated!

    Thanks in advance,

    Adam

Adam - I had a very similar problem in my test once environment. Everything was going well, all settings have been properly etc... but no connectivity ntwk. I had to remove my network config and rebuild. You can try just a little at a time to see if it works. Try to create a new vSwitch, move your top Service Console and assign a network adapter with the appropriate vlan information. See if it works then. That should give you an idea if there is a kind of corruption with the current configuration of ntwk.

This site will give you all the commands necessary to accomplish these tasks:

  • How to manually configure the IP, subnet, gateway on the new NIC in ESX Server 3.5

Hello, first let me say that I am relatively new on ESX Server and so the question I ask here may seem trivial but I looked through the documentation and other threads and that you have not found quite what I'm looking for.

I have an ESX Server 3.5 with a number of production virtual machines running works very well.  I need to install a second NETWORK adapter because my use of the network will go through the roof, once I convert a production server used in a virtual machine on this machine.  I have a server Dell PE 2950 and I bought an Intel Pro/1000 PT dual port PCI-e adapter that is on the list of hardware supported.  In the reading I did, every reason to believe that when I set up the server, the new network cards will appear in the VIC where I can assign to a new Vswitch and so forth, so I get it.  What I don't see in the VIC is a way to specify the NETWORK adapter settings.

The problem is that the switch I connect to, put in place by our network management staff, will not be DHCP settings of NETWORK card for me, I have to manually configure the IP, subnet and gateway until I can start talking.  When I initially installed ESX, I was able to provide all parameters of NETWORK card installation - which is not the case now with the new NETWORK card and the operating system all this up and running.  How do I do this?  Thanks for any help.

    ... BillH

Adding another physical NETWORK card to your vSwitch will make this new Teddy to comply with policies of vSwitch.  In particular, the load balancing algorithm will determine how the additional bears will get used.  By default, this is done with switch port ID.  This means that each vm NIC that feeds, will choose the next available bear to talk about.  The virtual NIC will essentially be Robin and choose the next Teddy online to talk it through and will so remain like that until a failure condition occurs, or the virtual machine is restarted.

If you know a particular VM is a high user of I/O, and you want to separate its traffic from the rest of your virtual machine, and then create a new portgroup on vSwitch0, assign this new portgroup 3rd Teddy and use the other two as before.  In addition, in your regular exchanges, remove or make sleep 3rd Teddy.  In this way you completely isolate the heavy vm from the rest of your systems.

  • Restore the entire ESX Server

    Hello

I currently have a single ESX Server 3.5 running a cluster of virtual machines, including the vCenter who runs it.  The problem is that I am running out of disk space and want to slap in addition to disks and to rebuild the RAID array.  Since I have no second box to vMotion at how can I do this without having to rebuild my entire esx from scratch Server?

Is it possible to use some kind of imaging tool that will recognize the VMFS partitions and create an image of the server on a large drive and then restore it to a larger painting afterwards?

I have no other than VCB backup tools at my disposal.

    Thanks in advance.

  • ESX Server and Dell 2950

Looking for some advice on the best way to get ESX Server running smooth on a Dell 2950

    6-drive 1 TB SAS - Raid should be configured Raid 0, 5 or 1 + 0 (10)

Also other tips you can highlight.

    Thank you

With 6 discs, I don't want to give up half of my storage.  I use RAID5 and exit the storage most of my pins available.  ESX will run smoothly on one of the RAID configs because it does not support RAID, nor she cares.  The difference here is a slight difference in the performance of the R/W between RAID levels.  With a low number of pins, however, this difference will be almost nil and not perceptible to a degree any.  Use RAID5, get most of storage that you can run as many virtual machines.

In addition, ESX will not recognize size LUNS greater than 2 TB volumes.  Create multiple logical drives in your RAID set to broadcast your I/O as much as possible.  Your VMFS block size will determine how big of a size of disk file or the virtual machine, you can create on this vmfs.  1 MB (default) = 256 GB max, max 2 MB = 512 GB, 4 MB = 1 to 8 MB = 2 TB max.

  • RAM ESX Server?

We currently have an ESX Server with 8 GB of RAM with about 6 VM. I'm going to add more virtual machines I need also us just ordered Dell PowerVault MD3000i iSCSI RAID since the virtual machines will be on the MD3000i am good with the 8 GB on the host or I need to improve?

It depends on what are virtual machines? I would look to see what memory is used by the virtual machines currently and especially if the balloon driver is used - if the balloon pilot is active without a doubt, you need to add memory - it can be checked by looking at graphs of performance for the ESX Server - activity of the ToolTip will be displayed in graphics performance for virtual machines.

    Hey all,.

I'm pretty new to vmware and part of my phone system running actross 4 ESX servers.  My question is, if I take a snapshot through the VI client, how could move this snapshot to a SAN or NAS network storage, and after doing, there would have anything preventing me to launch this snapshot on another ESX Server in the case of a massive failure among all?  I could be more complicate this, but with this system is the crtitcal mission, I'm a little aprehensive about the exparamenting with him too.

Hi - I ended up having to do such things in the past as well. I just built a virtual machine added lots of processors and memory, then for the CPU, I used the script CPUBusy.vbs from VMware (Google search which) and down it load times so that he began to max real physical processors... For memory, I just opened a massive text file in Wordpad and scroll up and down it. This gave me the circumstances to test the alarms, just don't do as a busy time or use some dev ESX servers...
