Presentation of ID host ESX host LUN to the VCB Proxy Server

I have a typical scenario where I have 3 ESX servers with 3 x 800 GB LUNS in a storage group separate on a CX 310 SAN box. The host LUN., of these 3 LUN Ids are 0, 1 and 2.

I have a specific host that starts from SAN, from the same box of CX 310 SAN. At this point of time, I have no choice to use this server as a Server Proxy VCB. As far as my knowledge goes, LUNS of the ESX servers must be made visible to VCB Proxy Server, as they are presented to the ESX servers.

My question here is, as the designated Proxy VCB server is booting from the SAN, he already has a host LUN 0 to Id the logic unit number this is the start of. The Id to host ONE of the first 800 GB LUN in the ESX Server storage group is also Host Id 0. Now, if I try to make the LUNS in storage group visible on the VCB Proxy Server ESX, is there not a shock of the VCB Proxy 0 host Id and Id host ESX Lun 0? I'm confused, I don't have a test envirinment where I could try this before I could actually go forward with any solution.

My intention is to perform a backup outside LAN of the VMDK.

Any help is that this respect is very much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

(1) Yes, you can have different host for VCB then for your ESX host LUN ID

(2) Yes, you can use the identifiers of naa, it will automatically use the identifiers of naa, no need to configure anything at all.

  • Adding storage to esx. Problems with VCB proxy

    Hello

I just added 4 FC LUN and them have initialized on ESX 3.02 with no problems.

I went to the VCB proxy, which had the automount disable, then I think that I made a mistake because I put them online (done not initialized) and after that Vmware can't access these drives vmfs.

Try to solve this problem I did the automount disable and scrub, but I don't know what to do next. Should I restart VCB proxy?

According to some posts here, I've run ' fdisk-l/dev/SD all? "command and it shows that these 4 discs didn't fb partition type.

Based in another post, I ran fdisk against each drive but I don't have the ability to place the partition type.

Can someone help me on this?

  • Is it normal that luns appears in win2k3 VCB proxy device manager?

    Hi all

Running Vsphere and VCB mounted windows 2003 with EMC cx500. Have zoned so that the vcb proxy can see all the san LUNS. I ran the DISKPART automount disable commands, but I see all my san LUNS appear in the Device Manager, and when I go to disk management, they have all posted, don't wait for someone to put in form by accident.

Just curious to know if it is as expected and others see the same behavior.

    Thank you very much!

    Hi Liam,

I have the exact same behavior on all my proxies VCB (7 of them!)

  • Get the LUN of the ESX host Info

Is there a way to extract the info from the ESX host LUN?  I need (s) Lun sees number/ID to match the storage admin ID...

  • ESX host cannot see the data store

Hello team, I have vcenter management 5 2 host esxi5. now added an esxi4 in the cluster and added iniitators for file systems. I can see the paths under this host of esx4 showing the LUN of the registrants. but I'm not able to see the data to store. When I tried to edit a newly created virtual machine to find the iso from the data store, it shows only the local hard disk of the host, which is a UCS blade. exsi5 hosts the two ok to see all data stores. can someone tell which part is wrong? Thank you!

Looks like there is no problem with the presentation of the logic unit number since you can see the path to the LUN from the host.

Is - these created data VMFS storages are 50 ESXi? If so, the VMFS version 5 (VMFS 5) which is not supported in ESXi 4.1.

In this case, its expected that the host ESXi 4.1 will not show VMFS5 data warehouses.

  • VI3 vm LUN at the recommendation of hosts vsphere 4.1

    Hello

"Note: virtual machines created in an environment of ESX 3.x will work perfectly on ESX 3.x and 4.x hosts." However, when you upgrade the virtual machine virtual material it can only run on ESX 4.x. If you have a mixed environment of hosts 3.x and 4.x, do not improve the virtual material until all ESX hosts have been improved in 4.x. "If the virtual hardware is upgraded before upgrading your ESX 3.x host, then your VMs can only lie on your hosts 4.x.

I'm looking for the best way to get the VM manged VI3.5 platform, servers, and storage in vsphere 4.1 vsphere Platform of servers and storage.

What that means I can the current map VI 3.5 to a newly configured LUNS ESXi 4.1 vsphere servers and re platforrm inventory the VM from the installed hosts recently updated?

Can I map the new LUN storage system to the current VI3, 5 and use svmotion.pl to move them from the virtual computer to new LUNS, map the new LUNS to the new servers and re inventory them?

What that means I can the current map VI 3.5 to a newly configured LUNS ESXi 4.1 vsphere servers and re platforrm inventory the VM from the installed hosts recently updated?

Yes - there is a minimum change in VI 3.5 and ESXi 4.1 VMFS file system

Can I map the new LUN storage system to the current VI3, 5 and use svmotion.pl to move them from the virtual computer to new LUNS, map the new LUNS to the new servers and re inventory them?

You can it is not necessary

  • Cannot add raw lun if the host is connected to vCenter

I have MS cluster disks in HP EVA4400. They are presented to my guests. If I self host then I can add raw disks in VM but if I add host to vCenter then the lun of the bullies appear no more.

Probably, if I anyone these LUNS and present with different lun ID then they would appear but can't bring those LUNS offline.

Anyone have idea where I should start to investigate?

I think that what you see is the expected behavior.

In a cluster environment, you can add a unit logic as a ROW only one number. While adding, a mapping file raw device called (vmdk file) is created. On the other node MSCS, you must connect to this mapping file (via Add existing virtual disk) rather than create another ROW.

Access to the RAW LUN through multiple files for mapping (if you manage to somehow create them) could cause problems with locking and possible data corruption.

  • Presentation storage to hosts on servers separate vCenter

    Guy couple of questions:

    1. Can someone please check that I can present safe storage to hosts that are managed by two different vCenter servers?  The original vCenter server has MANY LUNS connected with VM 50 or so running.  The new vCenter VM has a single cluster with a single host.  I need to move the hosts of origin to the new vCenter server by disconnecting > remove > add, but I need the only host in the cluster of destination to see all the storage hosting the original already see.  It was my understanding that since it is a clustered file system, you may add VMFS volumes to hosts in different groups, differect vCenter servers, etc..  Is this correct?  I can't really have any downtime during this time.
    2. If the only way to migrate a virtual computer in a cluster must be a cold migration, how I never migrate my vCenter VM to a new cluster?  If I stop the virtual machine to perform the migration, vCenter will be down to stop me moving it.  Sorry if it's a lame question. We recently moved to a machine virtual for vCenter... we were always physical.

    1. Yes, you can safely do this.  I just finished a migration of virtual machines in a cluster of 3.5 on VirtualCenter 2.5 a new vCenter and 4.1 hosts.  I had storage presented to the authorities and simply stop VMS, removed from the inventory and then added to the inventory and blah blah blah.

    2. I suppose I never tried, but you could stop the VM vCenter and then connect directly to a host with the vSphere Client and add to the inventory on the host, power back on and see if the virtual machine.  I guess it would be, but I'm not 100% sure.

  • Non-visible LUNs to the second esx Server

Hi, I have two HP G4p esx 3.5 servers attached to an MSA1000 with a hub via the emulex fibre FCs I had created two LUNS on the MSA with the ACU. One esx server sees the two LUNS created but the other cannot see the LUNS even after doing a rescan. Sometimes when making him analyze again the VI is suspended. I have obsereved both esx servers to see two different WWPN pointing to two different targets. I want both esx servers to see the same LUNS shared so I could run somewhat your since I'm new to vmware technology. I enclose a snapshot that I think could someone out there with the possible workaround to the issue.

    Thank you

I agree with other posters - make sure your zoning is correct on the FC switch and also ensure that you have checked boxes correct and applied, in the selective presentation of storage (SSP) within the ACU. If this is all OK, a new scan of the storage should display the logical unit number.

You're talking about the different WWPN is the Emulex HBA on their respective hosts.

  • Should the hosts to access the same VMFS * always * be grouped?

    Hi all

As stated above, given a config where there are several ESX / I host & multiple VMFS volumes, you should set up clusters, then present the storage shared for clusters, etc.

However, I see a config for the moment where there are a number of 'independent' hosts (managed by the same VCenter) that are * not * in a cluster, but each host is running VMs to the same shared storage.

Is this a reasonable config? It is not me! I'm looking into why they have not grouped (they have business licenses), but I wanted to check if it is an acceptable (i.e. supported) config because it seems a little strange to me!

(If I could be pointed toward a document covering so it would be ideal to support my argument).

    Kind regards

    Hi Paul,.

You are right, there is no such requirement as incase of Windows Cluster.

  • vSphere HA detected that this host is in a network other than the master vCenter Server is connected

    Hi all

I try to install a vSphere 5.1 environment (vCenter 5.1 (799731))... It has never been so difficult to get a VMware product running.

    Problem:

As soon as I create a Cluster HA (with 2 ESXi 5.1 (799733)) I get the message:

"vSphere HA detected that this host is in a network other than the master vCenter Server is connected"

    I tried everything...

    vCenter place in other networks

    Multihomed vCenter

Place the vCenter in the same network as the ESX host

Doublechecking ip, subnets, gw, name resolution, vSwitches

nothing done... is this a bug?

vCenter and also the two hosts of ESXi now resides in the same L2 network.

    ESX1: 10.254.250.74 255.255.255.0

    ESX2: 10.254.250.77 255.255.255.0

    VC: 10.254.250.29 255.255.255.0

The message may not be correct.

Please... @ someone out there... Help! I'm at the end of my knowledge.

  • Add the host Cluster in the Cluster data store

How can I add host/HostCluster in the Cluster data store after the cluster data store is created. I know that we can add at this time, when you create the cluster data store, but how can we add it as soon as it is created?

I think that as long as the new host has access to all the LUNS that comprise data warehouses in the cluster data store, then no further action is necessary.

Make sure just that if using CF then zoning is configured correctly and the LUNS are not hidden from the new host.

Also, make sure you restart the analysis for new data warehouses on your new host so that it can detect data warehouses

  • Set the permission on a stand-alone host failed with the script that I made

I made a script to set the permissions on our ESX host.

The goal is to set the permissions on the host itself. The same permissions when connect directly with the vsphere client to the host.

The problem is that after running the script, that the permissions are not set to hostlevel. They are only vissible connecting to the virtual Center Server.

    This is my script:

    #$esxCred = Get-Credential
    $vcServer = read-host "Virtual center server: "
    $vcServer =  $vcServer.Trim();
    $cluster = read-host "Clustername "
    $cluster = $cluster.Trim()
write-output "Credentials for ESX hosts "
    $esxcred = get-credential

    #Connect to vCenter
    Connect-VIServer $vcServer | Out-Null

#Connect to ESX hosts in cluster
    foreach ($esx in Get-Cluster $cluster | Get-VMHost) {
     write-output $esx
     Connect-VIServer $esx -Credential $esxCred | Out-Null
New-VIPermission -Entity $esx -Principal '<DOMAINNAME>\ESX Admins' -Role NoAccess
     }

    #Disconnect from vCenter
    Disconnect-VIServer $vcServer -Confirm:$false | Out-Null

Does anyone know why the permissions are not set on hostlevel?

When I run the New VIPermission when connecting to the esx host, it works well...

    Hello

In order to operate, you need to replace:

    New-VIPermission-body $esx - Principal 'BUSINESS\ESX Admins"- role NoAccess-Server $esxConnect

    With:

    New-VIPermission-entity $esx. Name - main 'BUSINESS\ESX Admins"- role NoAccess-Server $esxConnect

It is not good to work with objects, comes from a single connection and use directly, as part of another connection (relay something like ToString() + OBN will happen).

    Kind regards

In the old thread of comments, the script generateVMList.pl is mentioned. Anyone know where I can find it?

    Thanks in advance

Which you mentioned call is actually correct, but Sourceforge recently got attacked and they have disabled some of the webviews, is why you can not access it. However, it is still available on sourceforge, but you will need to use SVN CLI which allows to reach the repository vGhetto. I enclose the script in this response pending
