ESX4.1 network

First of all, I must say I'm not a person VM, I work on the side network.  We are conducting a debate on how best to integrate the 10Gb network adapters in our environment.  I have read a document dealing with the use of their 10Gb NICs in VMWare.  We currently have up to 10 1 GB per server connections in a switch of Cisco C4900M.  The cost is very high and I'm sure you can imagine what looks like the rack with up to 8 ESX servers per rack.  The Intel document mentions VDS a few times and I am sure that we do not use VDS in our environment.  I want to be able to 10 GB connections two port channel/trunk together and spend all of our traffic through this port channel.  This traffic will include service consoles, vmotion and traffic from the server vm.  Our VM system administrators do not feel that this.  They are always eager to have a separate copper to connect to the service console, or even of vmotion.  Personal networking feels that this can be performed through the port channel by creating a vSwitch and then by creating groups of ports that are members of the vSwitch.  And of course, we'll add the tag of vlan for the port group.  Is what someone does this and is ready to get an idea of trunking esx servers.  I'll also join the Intel document I've read.  Thanks for any info you can provide.

Thank you, Calvin, this is what we as thought network types but we receive disagreements on the side of the virtual machine in the House.  It seems pretty clear, channel ports and the trunk the 10 GB, create a vSwitch and add Exchange to the vSwitch.  Once again thanks for the info.

Hello

My advice would be to start by being clear on what you mean by a port channel. Types of networks as we want to talk to LACP - but VMware does not support this in general.

A lot of the Adviser comes from an older technology. Where VM traffic performed a NIC could flood until the management traffic on this NETWORK card would be reduced from 1 GB. Copper separate has become a practice best that was almost.

Be realistic, no virtual machine will flood a NIC 10GbE in such a manner. We have tried, with iperf, and we could not always bring a network of management in offline mode. Regardless of any old advise you read, there is no reason that this does not work. In fact, all our lab environments use a single 1 GB NIC for iSCSI, vMotion, VM traffic - and management. I wouldn't do it outside a laboratory, but the point is, it works very well.

Edit: I would also point out that the HCL for 10GB network adapters is very low. Get one that is listed. I had a customer wishes to use a certain brand of network cards, and this was a complete disaster with the seller to provide no compatible drivers HCL.

  • Migrate to vSphere/ESX4 host of the no routed private network to the public network mgmt mgmt

    Hello

I'm looking for advice on the best method to move guests to U2 ESX4.0 of a private network that is not routed on one vlan routed public. It is complicated by the requirement to keep all the VMs on the server farm running with no downtime / failure. Is this possible?

    Our farm config is:

1 x VM VC4 (32 bit) with two network adapters:

-1st NETWORK adapter connected to the vlan routed public (193.x.x.x)

-2nd NETWORK card that is connected to the private network not routed for mgmt/service console all ESX hosts. (10.0.0.x)

-Files local host on the vCenter server for DNS resolution of the ESX hosts on private non-routed network mgmt

10 + ESX 4.0 U2, console svc host 1, console svc 2 and all about vmotion network private not routed.

-The local Hosts file on each ESX host facilitates DNS on the network of mgmt ESX host.

    * We intend to keep the vmotion/vmkernel on the private vlan not routed

Here are the steps that I have written so far:

1 Vmotion all VMs off ESX host and switch to Maintenance Mode

    2. unplug and remove host ESX VC

    3. use VMware KB Article: 1022078 to change the address on the service console

4 update the hosts file on the VC and all ESX hosts with this ESX host's new public address

    All suggestions welcome.

  • No network connection on ESX4

    Hi all

    EU ESX4 machinery cluster

have a 2003 server that cannot connect to the internet

yesterday it was nice a static ip on the machine, nothing has changed.

tried to activate DHCP but im getting APIPA is a flat network so not configured

all servers in VC Lady segment workin very well

try to remove the card and install again without success

Its an AMD pcnet accelrated adapt.

    What cab be the problem?

First I detach AMD virtual machine network map and add an Intel E1000 (which is the default for Windows 2003 VMs) instead, then clean AMD currently installed network devices in the virtual machine Windows 2003. See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/269155/en-us (method 1)

If you can not always connect to the network, check the virtual network. Are all uplinks 'up' and they show the correct speed/duplex? Also make sure that physical switch ports are configured correctly, for example, VLAN, spanning tree portfast, switchport mode access (no secure port).

  • ESX4 NETWORK card driver update

    Hi all

I need help here. I have ESX 4.0 running on a Dell Poweredge 2950 server. I installed a new network card, then I downloaded the driver because a restart would not recognize the new card.

Now the document for the installation of the driver needs to mount the CD that contains the driver and place to the location that contains the file offline - bundle.zip and then run the command

    esxupdate - bundle = & lt; off line-bundle & gt;. Update zip.

My question is since the Dell server is to an offsite location can I place and download the .zip on my home directory on the server and run this command, and what I have to give the full path such as home/user/offline.bundle.zip. What is the correct syntex

I come from a solaris environment, so I'm assuming that if there is a similar function to the package instead of/var/spool queue.

    Kindly help

    Concerning

In short, Yes.  To expand a little bit, you will need to know root to run this command if you have logged on with your standard account.  Make sure you su - or su and use the full path to the binary esxupdate (/ usr/sbin/esxupdate).  If you knew - so you take on the complete environment (paths, etc.) from the root, if you just knew so you always use your standard user account environment and therefore would need the path full access to run the binary file.

If you have found this helpful at all prices please points using the correct or useful!  Thank you!

According to the material used in the host (e.g. network adapters), you need to either inject drivers appropriate installation image / iso using the Image Builder or cehck if the hardware vendor provides you with a custom installation image (see, for example, http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/04/DriverDetails/Product/poweredge-r620?driverId=XWYR5&osCode=XI51&fileId=3005015335)

  • Adding a network interface in the console service to access a different subnet

Currently, I have an esx4.1 with a service console host.

It is connected to a 172.20.32 subnet on its virtual switch.

I have another virtual switch that is not on the supreme court that pertains to a subnet that is dedicated for backups and inter-server communications.  We call this the "back-end network.  It is on the 172.19.8 subnet.

Our backup software requres that the supreme court have access to the backup target that is on the network "Backend".  I need to implement the supreme court so that he can see this goal and be able to carry traffic through the 172.19.8 subnet.

Is this possible, and how would I do?

The easiest way would be to add a second Service Console to the virtual switch on the 172.19.8 subnet

  • Activation of vMotion on ESX4.1

    Every morning.

I am looking for some advise and help on activation of vMotion on our ESX4.1 of 2 nodes cluster. We have recently upgraded to the Enterprise version of vSphere until now have capabilities of vMotion. I try to configure things but because of my lack of experience with this am a bit stuck.

I activated the license that allows me to configure now vMotion.

I created a new VMkernel, assigned an unused vmnic, left the VLAN ID empty and selected 'use this port for VMotion group', put in the IP address and subnet mask but the DG was left blank. Everything seems to proceed without problem, but I see that the NIC does not appear "observed IP varies. Also, I cannot ping by IP VMkernel new are assigned. This course is not allowing me to use vMotion.

My question is, what do I need to enable the NETWORK card somehow? If so some can help me to do so.

Should the ESX restart? is there anything else I should do to complete the configuration of vMotion to allow me to use it.

    Help much appreciated.

    Thank you.

    > My question is, what do I need to enable the NETWORK card somehow? If so some can help me to do so.

Check the other side - switch. Port is enabled on the switch? Is port right VLAN?

    > The ESX needs to restart? is there anything else I should do to complete the configuration of vMotion to allow me to use it.

No, the restart is unnecessary here.

You can check network connectivity VMkernel interface with the vmkping service console command.

  • Call "HostNetworkSystem.UpdateVirtualSwitch" for the error of the object when you attempt to add the second NETWORK card

Hi there - first post here, so please be nice :-).

We are just trying to place an ESX4.1 own deployment in our environment (no previous installation of VMWare) to our main office, using Dell M610 and blades blades M600 to what would become our DR - two sites site hosting VMS on Equallogic iSCSI SAN disks.

I configured 4 of our blade M610 with ESX 4.1 successfully and they work very well.  These blades have double NIC onboard, and after the initial installation of ESX, I could go to the virtual switch and add in the second NIC like vmnic1 (because one had already been detected during installation).  This fine workd for 4 guests on the M610 blades.  However, I came today to make my first installation on one of the old M600 blades and I encountered a problem.

Installation went without any problems and I was able to add the host in my vCenter.  I can change all the settings without problem (created the Port of VMKernal for my connection to SAN iSCSI etc, but as soon as I try to add in the second NETWORK card, he paused for a while, and then I get the following error message:)

Call 'HostNetworkSystem.UpdateVirtualSwitch' of object 'networkSystem-56 "on vCenter Server"VCEN01." ournetwork.local"failed. (network name has been changed for post).  When this happens, it locks up again for several seconds, and when the system returns, I can no longer communicate with the ESX host (Observer of events in vCenter watch 'host is not responding' and I find that I can not ping the host unless I reboot it.)

If anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate it that I don't want to proceed down to the line with our Installer if theres an underlying issue and I need to redo everything.

  • Some ESX4 configurations are lost after the reboot of the system

    Hi people,

I use ESX4 server for months.

Lately, after creating a few Pools of resources (RP) and the addition of virtual machines in the pool, I noticed that after rebooting my system, I lost all the Resource Pools, I created.

This problem of loss of configuration is not only limited to the RPs, I also lost some of the configurations of the network/portgroup after system reboot.

This problem is is produced as well when I entered "Maintenance mode" and then then rebooted the system;  and also when I typed the command "reboot" in the bash shell (I typed 'reboot' command 'sync' several times before typing.)

This problem becomes a kind of annoyance since I have to re-create the lost configuration each time that I reboot.

Is it possible to manually force the ESX4 to save the configuration for that I do not keep losing part of my configurations?

    Could someone please help?

    Thanks in advance.

    Danny

Really glad its sorted for you, as I said, I saw the question before at a customer's site and you will never know that the root is full, except if you look in the service console. It would be good to have this visible through the vi client, but in the meantime it just added monthly controls!

  • Using a LAPTOP computer and external drives to implement infrastructure ESX4 & vsphere.

    Hi, people.

Not been not not possible for me to acquire a robust and compatible to get by under ESX 4 Server (physical space at home, so many components niggle and not much more money to spend in), the only way that I would have to set up about 5/6 of the virtual machines in a field of messaging infrastructure running ESX4 in a portable high power (on the quad-core i3 / i5 or i7 processor) at least 6/8 Gb. RAM enough to satisfy my needs and requirements of the virtual computer.

However, there is another parameter to be considered: external drives for execution of VMFS file systems, because modern systems (Sata, Pata, disks etc. interfaces) are not compatible for loading system; No virtual machine are taken care on them and, in case of, the performance will never good if each of them was running at the same time.

The previous ideas must do some open and helpful (I'm sure they will) thoughts and advice:

    (1) has (or had) everyone feels with ESX4 in a processor of high power like the kind of I mentioned earlier? What has the vendor/model and material?

    (2) in the case of, how do you solve the question about to running 5 or 6 external drives for disc not computer usb virtual (AFAIK, ESX3 doesn´t support of USB drives)? NAS home (for example, LinkSys NAS200) is not enough to implement my desired purposes?

    (3) in my situation, the need of presentations good getting on ESX 4 and practice to get VCP certified, what has been your best idea in a hardware platform with space for?

As usual, I'm very nice for your answers and advice.

    Andy.

What you need to do is really not possible for a laptop - since it is a home network, I would look to get a whitebox - check-vm - Help.com or http://ultimatewhitebox.com/ sites dedicated to helping people like you looking for a box of cost effective to run reliable ESX -.
