ESXi 4.1, ESXi 5.1 - migration of data base and other issues

Hello, we have a pretty small environment ESXi 4.1 Enterprise Plus
with 3 guests. We have a standalone physical SQL server that hosts the database
and a VM Server 2008 64 bit running vCenter. I wanted to use Server 2008 R2
for the vCenter, so I intend to install a new VM running this OS. Is it possible
the new basis of use 4.1 existing vCenter 5.1 (I guess he needs to)
mise_a_jour/migration) and have 3 4.1 ESXi hosts to vCenter 5.1 report? I have
then remove the vCenter 4.1 and upgrade the hosts of 4.1 to 5.1. The
Another option Im contemplating implements the vCenter 5.1 with a new SQL
database.

Also there are issues keeping the hosts at 4.1 when using
vCenter 5.1 for a few weeks?

Thank you!

Is it possible to have the new vCenter 5.1 using the existing base of 4.1

Years: This is not possible, during the upgrade to vCenter Server 4.1 to 5.1, I saw the database schema changes. Schema be compatible freshly installing vCenter server 5.1 and connects to the 4.1 database and do not support.

A report of hosts ESXi 4.1 3 Center 5.1?

Years: It is possible, ESXi4.1 works seamlessly with vCenter Server 5.1. Once you upgrade to vCenter server 5.1 level, all the host esx4.1 will connect to improved vCenter Server 5.1

The other option I'm contemplating implements the vCenter 5.1 with a new SQL database.

Years: you lose all configurations and need to connect ESX4.1 to the new host Server 5.1 and reconfiguration

Also is there any problem keeping the hosts to 4.1 using vCenter 5.1 for a few weeks?

Years: As mentioned above, it works and it is compatible.

    (3) load a custom table with the tables listed in the MVPRDEXP. EXP in the production system. Run a script to create a script to export for all PSRECDEFN where the RECTYPE is 0. This identifies all application data tables. You may want to dms export large tables in parallel.

  • Migration of virtual machines from a data store, and then delete the data store?

    Hello

I have a future deployment this month and my Director wants to build a new RAID 6 array, create a store of data with the new table and then move all the VMS to the newly created data store.

Then he asked me to take the old data store and remove it and the available space between the deleted data store and other stores of data in our shared environment. The question is when the new raid is created and vm has migrated to the new data store, which is the best way to remove the data store empty and make sure that the space available for other data stores? Any help would be appreciated...

    Greg ~.

If all controls are met, you can go ahead and take it apart without any problem.

    I have re-iterate below checks:

-No virtual machine is in the data store

-The data store is not part of the cluster data store

-The data store is not managed by the DRS storage

-IGCS is disabled for this data store

-The data store is not used for vSphere HA heartbeat.

Especially highlighted 2 controls. Please note that SIOC can be enabled on the data without SDR photo store

  • ESXi 4 VMs migration from one host to another without HA

We are facing a problem of automatic migration with VM ESXi migration between hosts in the cluster. Even though we have disabled HA and no reason apparent for migration. We have two virtual machines residing on a host, and the host does not work normally. However, I have noticed that when we have turned off or the other virtual machines and once again, he climbs to another host in the cluster.

The host tasks log shows now that the migration has been made by the SYSTEM when the power on. And once one of the virtual machines migrated even without power and with a similar journal entry showing that this has been done by the system. This can happen due to a shortage of resources on the host computer even if HA is disabled or are there other reasons that this can happen?

    Hello

I'm sure that's the reason for your behavior described.

  • ESXi 4.1 upgrade to ESXi 5.5 while all virtual machines and data warehouses

We have two servers ESXi 4.1.0 348481 (Essentials) and we need to upgrade to ESXi 5.5 for support of Windows Server R2 2012. We intend to use the interactive upgrade. We want to ensure that the virtual machine is preserved. More precisely VMFarm001 where ESXi is installed in the same data store as VMServer1. VMServer1 is our largest server and cannot be migrated to another data store easily because we are not allowed for vMotion.

    The following layout

    VMFarm001

    Dell PowerEdge R710

    Data store:

    Storage1 - 1.36 TB

    VMServer1 - MS Server 2003

    Install ESXi

    Storage2 - 1.82 TB

    VMServer2 - MS Server 2008 R2

    VMServer3 - MS Server 2008 R2

    VMFarm002

    HP ProLiant ML350 G5

    Data store:

    Storage1 - 95GB

    Install ESXi

    ISOs

    Storage2 - 1.82 TB

    VMServer4 - MS Server 2008 R2

    VMServer5 - MS Server 2008 R2

I have a feeling I'm worried for nothing given that option during the ESXi upgrade and keep the VMFS datastore.

    Thank you

    Yes, that's correct.

I recently finished the upgrade of lots of stand-alone hosts ESXi 4.1 (with local storage only) to 5.1 and all were successful. The same process applies to 5.5, so you shouldn't have a problem with preservation of VMFS data warehouses (and all virtual machines).

  • Can I have a free server backup or extra esxi 5.5, as a backup to my other server host free esxi 5.5?

    Hello.

I have a server free single esxi 5.5, operation of the virtual machine from one storage device shared iSCSI.

Where it breaks down, can I have a free host of alternative esxi 5.5 manually that lights up, and start the virtual machine to this shared storage server? Sort of a manual of high availability?

Yes, it should work, assuming that the ESXi version is the same (i.e. hardware version of the virtual machine is supported by the two hosts).

As long as you don't try marketing the virtual machine of these two hosts at the same time, you should be fine in a VMware perspective.

However, please keep in mind that - according to the physical hardware - it might be possible that, for example, Windows requires a reactivation.

  • Update my ESXi 4.1.0 to the last and largest House

Once again, my apologies for this newbie question.

I was ESXi 4.1.0 running for awhile and wanted to bring it up to the last and the largest.  However, I must admit that I'm totally confused the naming of the files on the download page.  There are a lot of files, just download everything (assuming Yes since I am so far behind the times)?

Y at - it a particular order that they should apply?

    OR

Just download a single file that combines all the previous patches/updates and applies?  IF Yes, what is this file?

    Thanks in advance.

    Bill W

I assume that you have downloaded the patches of http://www.vmware.com/patchmgr/findPatch.portal

Basically the patches as update - from - esxi4.1 - 4.1_update02 are cumulative (as you can already see in the name of the file). I suggest that you install this update fix, followed by the latest available hotfix ESXi410-201204001. You can skip ESXi410-201201001 in this case, because it updates the same components that the mentioned before the last patch.

  • Free version of ESXi can support for configuration of start and stop virtual machines via vSphere Client?

I have read and found some documents on ESXi.

According to the documents, I know that ESXi free version does not support some advanced virtual machine configurations and does not support write to ESXi host permission. But when I download ESXi from vmware.com, I can't find the free version. He will always be a trial of the licensed version edition because I can always do the configuration of start and stop virtual machines via vSphere Client installation. I can also run scripts (lamw) pl in vMA to stop the ESXi host (authorization to write ok?)

Then I confused. How can I get the really free version of ESXi? Or will the free version after 60 days of evaluation?

Start/stop above configuration is in vSphere Client via 'Configuration'-> "start/stop VM"-> "Properties"... «-> "Allow the virtual computers start and stop automatically with the system" actions setting and stop virtual machines can be configured to "comments"turn off computer"or"Suspend".» Can any body tell me if it's supported by ESXi free edition?

Is the free version of vSphere Client too? Because when I use the vSphere Client, he told me that I have 60 days of evaluation. This confused me again. I think that vSphere Client is always free, am I right?

Any suggestion or advice is much appreciated.  _

    Micky

Configuration of start and stop virtual machines is available with the free version and licensed, with the free version you would be configured everything via vSphere Client, where as with a licensed version, you can optionally use scripts to configure it and also issue restarts/stops using scripts.

Second, shutdownHostViaSOAPAPICall.pl for the version licensed and free of ESX (i), this script will work in both free and licensed because it uses direct SOAP calls emulating the vSphere Client communication. Take a look at the documentation for details, but this of course is not supported by VMware.

  • If I put in place an openfiler VM as a data store iSCSI & vmfs on two ESXi hosts, both ESXi hosts can access two data warehouses?

If I put in place an openfiler VM as a data store iSCSI & vmfs on two ESXi hosts, both ESXi hosts can access two data warehouses?

The reason why I ask, is that I have two hosts ESXi ESXi 4 running.  I do my backups with ghettoVCB, which I modified to create thin backups on one of the drives the.  I then wput them to the server, which causes them to become thick.  Directly targets the backup in a vmfs iSCSI on the server in the face shop.  It would save a step and the vmdk backup should remain thin.

    Thank you!

The short answer is Yes. If you allow the ESX servers to see the LUN. This setting is configured to the Openfiler.

  • Cold using vMotion migration between data warehouses

To perform a migration cold between 2 not the source ESX servers and the host ESX destination need to see two data stores?

I have a host ESX 3.5 with 1 data store called data01 and a host ESXi 5.0 with a data store called data02. Using vCenter to manage the two ESX host - what I want to turn off a virtual running on the 3.5 host computer and perform a migration cold, including a data store move to 5.0 host.

    Can this be achieved?

I am unable to storage area presented to the ESX host 3.5 to the host of 5.0 and also unable to storage 5.0 to 3.5 host.

The OP is talking about a cold migration.  In the scenario described, it doesn't have to be a shared storage.  As long as the migration cold remains in the same instance of vCenter, there should be no problem.

  • Get-hard drives - storage drives data store migrate between data warehouses

    Hi all

Our current storage configuration with specially designed split-role of the bases of data storages (OS, LOG SQL, SQL DATA, APP, Exchange roles, etc.)  I do a storage store on my VMware Infrastructure and hoped to target only the disks of virtual machines that are on any data store and migrate them to another.  Rather new to PowerCli if you're wondering why the bellows of the command does not work and the reports that the file is locked.

    Get-hard drive - data store 'Datastore01 ' | Moving-hard drive - data store Datastore02

If the machine virtual itself is made aware of the command?  Would I have to enumarte the virtual machines on the first data store and then target discs that everyone has and redirect it to the hard disk Move command?

    Thanks in advance

Yes, you are banging in the sequence of commands trying to move a file on the data store without referencing the virtual machine. According to the State of the virtual machine (lit or not) of different things happen

    • VM power off - the disc is moved and the virtual machine is broken (the vmx file will always point to the original location for the HD that is no longer there)
    • Virtual MACHINE power - the disk is locked, so it cannot be moved (the error you have seen)

Another thing to keep in mind is that the configuration of the VM is also on a data store, so if you want to move the entire virtual machine you can just move the hard drives

If all the virtual machines on a data store have all their HDs on this data store then you can do something like

    Get - VM - data store 'Datastore01 ' | Move-VM - data store "Datastore02".

To access the VM configuration, but also his records. If you have virtual machines where the disks into a single virtual machine, then you will have a little more work to do to sort the records that must be moved

    Get - VM - data store 'Datastore01 ' | Get-hard drive | Where-Object {$_.} FileName.Contains ("[Datastore01]")} | Moving-hard drive - data store "Datastore02".

This is all virtual machines with a component (hard drive or configuration) on Datastore1, and then for each VM is all hard disks that are on Datastore01 and the Datastore02

  • Migration of data without interruption VM store

    Hi all

I have a vCenter with several hundred VM. They are stored in 4 different NFS data warehouses. Is it possible to pass without interruption (1 after another, and 1 at a time) of their current data store to the newly created by command line?

    Thank you.

    Hi mofr,.

Thanks to your tip, I did some additional research and found the solution to my problem. In order to limit the vCenter to do one (and only one) live migration of data store at a time, you should configure vpxd.cfg in your vCenter machine and add the following under :

    2

    16

    4

I hope this helps others as well.

    Thank you once again.
