ESXi 4.1 vicfg-cfgbackup ABSENT

I don't want to use vma or rcli to Setup esxi backup and wonder why the vicfg-cfgbackup command is not present on the latest version of esxi 4.1. I would like to run this command in the console on the host ssh and I read howtos speaking on the use of this command from a ssh shell on the host, but it does not appear when I run.

any ideas?

Thank you

Is there a reason you want to use the appliance vCLI or vMA?

  • With the help of vicfg-cfgbackup during the upgrade to ESXi

    Hi all

We are working on the upgrade to ESX 4.1 to 5.1 ESXi.  We do this in a scalable fashion.  Take us a host ESX 4.1 since the cluster, rebuild it from scratch with ESXi 5.1 and then place it in a cluster.  Is it possible or advisable to back up the configuration of ESX 4.1 with vicfg-cfgbackup and then restore this configuration it is upgraded to 5.1 ESXi?  We do not have Enterprise Plus license so profiles host is not an option (or at least that's my understanding).

Thanks for your help and advice!

I don't know that there is an 'official' answer on that, but check out http://communities.vmware.com/thread/392759 for more information.

  • vicfg - cfgbackup.pl 5.1 change!

    Hi, I have a free version of ESXi (@home) that I just upgraded from 5.0.0 914609 6238602 to 5.1.0.

I've used some vicfg - cfgbackup.pl to save the configuration (I am starting a Flash USB drive).

    But after the vicfg upgrade - cfgbackup.pl - save is fine, but the vicfg - cfgbackup.pl - dependent fails thereby;

    Enter the user name: root
    Enter the password:
The restore operation will restart the host.
    Type 'Yes' to continue:
    Yes
    Download config bundle on configBundle.tgz...
Impossible to enter maintenance mode: the current licence or ESXi version prohibited the execution of the requested operation. Please ensure no virtual machines are running on the host computer, and retry the operation again.

Yes, all customers was arrested and the host was I maintenance (using VMware vSphere Client) mode

    I also note that a similar message when you use vicfg - hostops.pl put the host in maintenance mode;

    Enter the user name: root
    Enter the password:
Esxi2 of the host can not enter into maintenance mode.

    SOAP fault:
    -----------
Error string: the current licence or ESXi version prohibited the execution of the query
    operation of the Ed.
    Lack of details: RestrictedVersionFault

    Thus, the questions I have.

-Is it intentional that the free version (license) is not allowed to use the vicfg - cfgbackup.pl - charge (or vicfg - hostops.pl)?

You want to know whether or not it is an error on my host...

-If Yes, are there other ways to make a backup of the configuration?

    - Otherwise, I'm guessing a backup to the USB Flash drive is the only way to go, but I have tried to make a clone of disk in a lot of ways, but no equals 100% USB Flash drive, it often fails (and must take place when the host is down)

    ...

Free license of ESXi (also called vSphere Hypervisor) does not write operations using the remote CLI which is based on the API. This is an expected behavior and is not an error. For more details, you can take a look at this article that I wrote awhile back about the "fault.restrictedversion.summary" http://www.virtuallyghetto.com/2011/06/dreaded-faultrestrictedversionsummary.html

  • How to schedule a task backup vicfg - cfgbackup.pl?

    Hello

We want to plan the next task of the vicfg-cfgbackup for ESXi host on the server vCenter Server running on a physical Windows Server.  We currently use vCLI 5.

    C:\Program Files (x 86) \VMware\VMware vSphere CLI > vicfg - cfgbackup.pl - ESXi5 - root - password MyPassword s D:\ProgramData\VMware\Configuration\ESXi5.bak Server username

In schedular Windows task, we tried one of the following ways, but always without success

    (1) start a program, program - "C:\Program Files (x 86) \VMware\VMware vSphere CLI >", parameter - 'vicfg - cfgbackup.pl - ESXi5 - root - password MyPassword s D:\ProgramData\VMware\Configuration\ESXi5.bak Server username.

    (2) to start a program, program - "C:\Program Files (x 86) \VMware\VMware vSphere CLI > vicfg - cfgbackup.pl", parameter - ' - server ESXi5 - username root - password MyPassword s D:\ProgramData\VMware\Configuration\ESXi5.bak.

    Your opinion is requested.

    Thank you

I added "C:\Program VMware vSphere CLI\bin > ' in my system 'PATH' to luch vCLI command of anywhere.

Make a batch file and write the following lines there:

    vicfg - cfgbackup.pl - server SRV1 - username root - password MyP@ss s 'e:\host-cfg\SRV1.cfg '.

    vicfg - cfgbackup.pl - server SRV2 - username root - password MyP@ss s 'e:\host-cfg\SRV2.cfg '.

Then created a base on my Windows Calendar, select "Run program" in the "Action" stage and get the path of the command file created in the next step.

If you want to run several times a day, you can change the calendar created as image attachment (depending on your timing of backup).

  • ESX1 backup... help vicfg - cfgbackup.pl

I need some clarification on vicfg - cfgbackup.pl. I just installed vMA and it seems to work. I want to use vicfg - cfgbackup.pl to save the config esxi. Run this command of vMA? Because when I do I get a command not found.  Or do I run from a PC? Thanks for your help

    Nick

Do a google on "scp" and a search Windows machine, you'll probably want to use the free tool called "WinSCP".

  • question of vCLI backup vicfg - cfgbackup.pl

I would have posted this in vSphere forums but for some reason any, that there is no option to start a new thread it only here. in any case, I used the vCLI backup feature to back up my esxi server to the top, but I was wondering what it accualy backup because it did not take long at all is not a big file and I elastix VOIP server inside runing. • Back and recovery

    Hi guys

This could be referred to as a millon and a time and I hope that the solution will be easy and straightforward.

I'm a relative newbie with VMware, I can build host and guests, and that's really it.

I have to rebuild the host due to hardware problems.

I need to save my guests, how do I do it?

I have a mounted NAS and a copy of the main data store is stored here also.

Is it enough if I rebuild the host and just point to the NAS data store, all my guests and their configurations will be back straight?

I have to do something else?

    IM under ESXi 4.1

    See you soon

    Noel

So if I back up ESXi config with vicfg-cfgbackup, and then rebuild the host and import back in the config, it will simply link to the top the NAS and the virtual machine running on the NAS or added in the local data store and adding them to the inventory.

Yes - it should be. Just make sure that you have these backups in a good condition and preference test.

  • VM on Update2 and Update3

    Hello

    two questions:

1 - a VM with ESXi 3.5 U2 can run on another host ESXi 3.5 U3. Simply copy this virtual machine with the browser and add to the inventory of ESXi 3.5 U3?

    and

2 - an upgrade to U3 U2 hold the same configuration and VM on the host, is transparent?

    Thank you.

One thing that you usually when you upgrade your version of ESXi is also updated the VMware Tools in the virtual machines.   For an upgrade to the latest version of ESXi, you won't actually use the update installation CD 3.   If you don't have VirtualCenter, take a look at the methods here - http://www.vm-help.com/esx/esx3i/Patch_3i_without_VC.php.   Before the upgrade, it is a good idea to have a backup virtual machines plus one of yoru ESXi config using vicfg - cfgbackup.pl.

  • Backup error ESXi 5.5 using vicfg

I'm trying to save our ESXi server configuration using the command vicfg - cfgbackup.pl, but I got the error 'bad hostname' after entering the password. Here's my output to the screen. What I am doing wrong?

Is 192.168.75.18 the IP address of your ESXi host (without typos etc.) and is this place works?

Probably you have an error in the command line you entered, the error message print "https://=192.168...

The '=' in front of the INVESTIGATION period does not, maybe you have entered - Server == 192.168... ?

  • Configure a backup at the request of 5.0 ESXi hosts

    Hello

Is there anyway that I can configure a scheduled backup of 10 servers ESXi?

    Please suggest.

    Thank you

    Mihir

    Mihir salvation,

Years ago I was also thinking around how to manage the ESX (i) to return once crashing.

I could circle in all directions, but I come to the end that "try to save some configs" > theire is of single Point of failure.

-Get 100% of all the files that are needed to get the config back once that crashing

-At a Major relase change > perhaps this dependend files modification or extension

-Restore/backup Configs, maybe causing a kind of instability...

-Don't know if Vmware supports 100% backup and restore config

In any case, my own Solution follows.

Instead of save config and trying to restore > I kill 2 flies with 1 slap.

-Fast food (but of the mind, this is a new installation and pushing scripts,...)

-Update of the process. (New installation with the new Build number)

I use the PXE boot solution.

The server is much more stable.

    What I did:

    -R2 Windows 2012 with IIS + WDS

-With the help of 2 actions

    1 x for WDS

    1 x for IIS

IIS part = 1: Hostcfgs (Kickstart files for each host)

2: Patch (placed the last update file)

3: scripts (host, ntp file, the advanced settings, file exchanges,...)

WDS share = deployment share of default windows where I place the iso extract binaries and files menu pxelinux.cfg,...

Then at all. Once I have a strange problem. I push things kickstart and have following

-More information freshly installed with all THE Configs as before

And once that a new major Relase is out > it is easy to integrate to PXE.

If you have only one initially effort and you need keep the patches (or by creating every time a new Source).

PS: Remember, you must be sure that the system is Stable. And with a sort of backup/restore > you never 100% could be sure that this is the case. Because you know a lot of theire ID of the object in the background...  With this kind of Solution, I could be sure that I covered everything 100%.

"vicfg-cfgbackup" is a good idea >, but never I would rely on it completely.

Just Feedback to think in the other direction.

    Best regards

  • Setup ESXi backup problems

I use vCLI to perform the backup of host ESXi on my Windows 7 PC. I use the following command:

    "c:\Program Files (x 86) \VMware\VMware vSphere CLI\bin > vicfg - cfgbackup.pl - Server".
    "10.8.7.73 s c:\temp.

    And get the following error:

Configuring backup of the firmware in c:\temp...
    GET
    https://10.8.7.73/downloads/configBundle-xyx.net.tgz expired
successful: 500 unable to write in "c:\temp": den Permission
    EEI

Please tell us which account needs to access my folder C:\temp.

If I am not mistaken the command expects a backup file rather than a backup as the target directory. Try:

    "C:\Program Files (x 86) \VMware\VMware vSphere CLI\bin > vicfg - cfgbackup.pl - Server 10.8.7.73 s c:\temp\ESXi-Backup.bak.

  • BackupExec 2012 Agent for ESXi 5 host?

We just move from ESX to ESXi 5 4.1.  We find that the BackupExec Agent of Linux is no longer talking to ESXi host 5.

Just would like to ask you if there are any 2012 BackupExec for ESXi 5 Host Agent?

    Thank you

As far as I know, we don't have Backup Exec for ESXi host agent. If you want to take a backup of the configuration files to can do this through the vCLI l command vicfg - cfgbackup.p

We just upgraded a 4.1 ESX ESXi 5 host host.

In ESX 4.1, we receive BackupExec Agent installed and regularly backup/etc and the log files.  Wonder if we still have these backups?  If so, how the server BackupExec speaks to the ESXi 5 host?

collection of newspapers is most important in that ESX ESXi, because if no SCRATCH partition configured newspapers will be emptied after a reboot.

    For the collection of newspapers

    1. as indicated in the commentary after use Syslog collector to collect newspapers of ESXi.

2 redirect syslog to a folder in volme VMFS.

For the collection of backup/etc, you can use the command of vCLI vicfg-cfgbackup

  • Question about the upgrade to ESXi 4.1 and USB keys

Right now I'm under ESXi 4.1 from a USB key (ie. a very small USB key).

If I want to "start over" and use a newer USB for ESXi 5 but keep my intact, is guest operating systems - this possible?  (For example, if I install ESXi on a Virgin USB 5.0, will I be able to import my existing operating system vmx ESXi 4.1 images, etc.?)

In addition, what's the downside of ESXi 5 running from a USB?  I spin this in a laboratory at the House and have read that ESXi basically load into memory if you really start player ESXi itself is useless and a USB key is perfectly fine.  Is this true?

If you do not want re - configure ESXi 5.0, you can proceed as follows:

    1. Use free software, called "USB Image Tool 1.57" make a picture of your USB 4.1 - software available here http://www.alexpage.de/usb-image-tool/ .  This way you can restore it to any USB in the future.
    2. After making a backup of your USB 4.1 image, upgrade installation 4.1 to 5.0.
    3. Make a backup of your configuration of ESXi using the CLI vMA tool / vSphere in Windows with the following command: vicfg-cfgbackup-next - server
    4. The new installation of ESXi 5.0 on new USB
    5. VMA or vSphere CLI tool use in Windows with the following command to restore the backup from step 3 config: vicfg-cfgbackup-load - server
    6. You should now have ESXi 5.0 works on a new USB without any necessary configuration

Alternatively, you can restore the image USB created in step 1 on your old USB in order to have a 4.1 installation handy...

I recommend that make you a picture of your USB 5.0 USB as well just in case in the future USB fails.
