ESXi nested using SSD LUN

I have 9. Workstation something and I have 2 guests of esxi and some 2008 R2 and 2012 servers.

When I put the Windows based guests on the SSD LUN, they get near speed ~ 450 - 475 MB/s.

But when the esxi guests invited nested Windows it contains, and I put this nested on the lun SSD, Windows prompt it you only ~ 120 MB/s.

The tool I use is SQLIO IOPS / s, MB/s and together to write and random read.

Is this normal? There is a bottleneck for the driver from the disk of the esxi?

I think I could get at least 400 MB/s, but only 120 MB/s?

Thank you

I/O bound tariffs of charges of work badly in nested SMV, particularly on hosted products (post work and Fusion).  When you run a VM nested under item of work/Fusion, 20-25% of a non-nested VM performance is fairly typical for a related workload I/O.

  • I have a question about the ESXi upgrade using Update Manager...

    This is probably a stupid question, but I've never played and update ESXi using Update Manager.  We need to update ESXi ESXi 4.1 4.1 servers before vCenter 5.0 U1 from U2 (there is a known issue where the ESXi 4.1 servers receive the GROUP after upgrading vCenter to 5.0 U1).  We used HP ESXi image to install ESXi on our servers for new installations.  This image contains ESXi.1 U2 as well as the drivers of HP and CIM.

    4.1_U2_Oct_2011_ESXi_HD - USB-SDImgeInstlr_Z7550 - 00241.iso

    Can this same image HP ESXi 4.1 U2 that we used to install to new ESXi servers, be used to upgrade our 4.1 4.1 U2 ESXi servers using the Update Manager?  Or, upgrade package should be used for the upgrade?  Also, if an upgrade package must be used, is it OK to use one provided by VMware, or will be losing our HP specific drivers and CIM to do this?

    Thank you

    Hello

    You can import custom HP ESXi 4.1 U2 ISO in Update Manager (don't forget to use the latest version of June 2012, available here: https://h20392.www2.hp.com/portal/swdepot/displayProductInfo.do?productNumber=HPVM06) and update the hosts with her.

    In a second step, you can then import the last custom HP ESXi ISO 5.0 (available here: https://h20392.www2.hp.com/portal/swdepot/displayProductInfo.do?productNumber=HPVM09) and update the hosts again with her.

    To be on the current ESXi 5.0 patch level you finally apply the latest patches from VMware via the Update Manager.

    I'm talking about vSphere 5.0 here people. Thank you so much everyone. What can I do or what I missed? I need to migrate my VMs nested under my ESXi nested successfully.

    Thanks again nested VM experts!

    ESXi does not support on your processor hardware-assisted virtualization.  If your processor is AMD - V, there was a design flaw with the first generation of AMD - V parts that we have chosen to not to bypass.  You will not be able to run virtual machines nested on this material.

    ESXi 5.0 supports AMD - V only on later processors and family 10H.

    The commands work with ESXi.   You can configure ESXi to send logs to a syslog receiver in the advanced settings.  ESXi also can copy the log files to a location of data store.

    With the vMA, the vi-logger component is configured to extract the newspaper of ESXi (and vCenter as well).

  • Manage an ESXi host using vCenter Server?

    I understand it is possible and requires of the specific licenses for ESXi hosts, even if I find information on the VMWare site a bit confused as to what I need exactly. We have-

    1 License Server Standard 4 x vCenter

    4 x vSphere Enterprise license 4 (who manage our ESX 4 hosts this site)

    3 (and soon 4) remote sites that have the same server ESXi

    I would like to be able to manage ESXi host using vCenter as well, is this possible with what we have? If this isn't the case, can someone direct me as to what it takes?

    Thank you

    You need the standard by CPU socket for each host license to add to vCenter.

    You can always create a separate environment and get the Essentials Bundle (up to 3 guests max) for $500:

    http://store.VMware.com/servlet/ControllerServlet?Action=displayPage&env=base&locale=en_US&siteid=VMware&ID=ProductDetailsPage&ProductID=126843700&RESID=psfyPAoBAlkAACQ2y-kAAAAX&rests=1277824287882

    So you should have 2 vCenter servers.

    If disk dropped cleanly then header status would be OLD, then you are good to go with this record in another diskgroup... But before that, he must clean up his headerstaus with the command "dd" to make its candidate status...

    I'm worried because we usually add LUN to one only if a disk group V$ ASM_DISK. HEADER_STATUS = CANDIDATE for this LUN.

    Ask you guys to admin to clean for you...
    For example
    DD if = / dev/zero bs = 8 k count = 1000 = / dev / rhdisk12-> rhdisk12 is the disk that you want to use

    Once above the command is executed, see its status from v$ asm_disk. It shoule have candidate status

    Nested only is not currently fully supported, I would not use it as a strategy of DR.  Use nested case fall into the categories of PoC, Dev, test and demos.

    Not a production-use case by an effort.

  • Turn on F/T - ESXi nested / VM WS 9 Lab - help Pls (have done my research)

    Hello people,

    Before you start, I did my research on this topic, but not a lot of chance.

    PC: Mobo = Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3 / Proc = Core AMD FX 8320 8 / RAM = 32 GB / VMware Workstation 9 last Build / ESXi 5.1.0 build 1065491 (nested)

    Question: I just took the course install configure manage and noticed that the lab was nested and fault tolerance has been activated using these strings for a given virtual machine:

    replay.allowBTOnly = true

    replay.allowFT = true

    Replay.Supported = true

    Now I have a 64-bit Windows Server 2012 that starts well for the tests. Adding these lines to test F/T does not work well.

    I also added the "vhv.allow = TRUE" string in the config file of the ESXi server as shown in this link:

    http://communities.VMware.com/thread/341818?start=0 & tstart = 0

    Another link, that I ran was:

    virtuallyGhetto: how to enable nested vFT (virtual fault tolerance) in vSphere 5

    The error I get when shooting to the top of the virtual machine:

    This virtual computer is configured for 64-bit guest operating system. However, 64-bit performance is not possible. Longmode is disable for this virtual machine.

    Any help / suggestions are appreciated. I'm going out of town will be slow to respond back, but thanks to all for your time.

    PS: as suggested here, I also used this link to see if the option to "nestedHVsupported" was real and connect to my ESXi server.

    virtuallyGhetto: having trouble allowing nested ESXi in vSphere 5.1?

    Although the binary translation is supported for 64 bits on a physical AMD hardware customers, it is not supported for 64 - bit reduced nested in a virtual machine.  64-bit embedded host can be run with (virtualized) support virtualization.  Unfortunately, fault tolerance for a nested virtual machine requires the full binary translation, because the monitoring of the performance of the virtual processor unit is not able to provide the necessary support for fault tolerance using hardware-assisted virtualization.

    In short, you will only be able to perform fault tolerance on 32 bits of the nested VMs.

  • Virtual ESXi / nested virtualization and VCA

    Hi all

    We tried to install some new virtual ESXi servers in our dev environment. to help our R & D.

    The problem is that our clusters must be activated EVC - Merom Genesis so that R & D for work stuff.

    I tried to use the following two articles:

    http://www.virtuallyghetto.com/2011/07/how-to-enable-support-for-nested-64bit.html

    http://www.virtuallyghetto.com/2012/02/how-to-configure-nested-ESXi-5-to.html

    After finishing the first link, the ESXi virtual is able to run 64-bit virtual machines. So all is well (although I stumbled upon both problems with this - apparently, you can't physical host the virtual ESX running in a CVS in the first place of accommodation).

    So after the ESXi virtual is able to run machines virtual 64-bit, I continue to the 2nd link and it doesn't work. I do exactly what the guy said there is still the virtual ESXi is not compatible with the EVC cluster and the 64 bit hosted on the virtual ESXi VM cannot run after changes to the CPUID mask.

    Someone knows something similar? Someone has ideas of what I'm doing wrong or can give me some ideas on what to do?

    Thanks in advance,

    Nitzan.

    In my view, the following option:

    CPUID.1.ECX = 00000000000000001010001000011001

    should be

    CPUID.1.ECX = 00000000000000001010001000111001

  • Question about ESXi 5 use cases

    Hello

    My name is David Baldock, and one of the IT guys here at work suggested that with the help of VMware ESXi 5 could allows me to accomplish what I need to do on my system, without having to close and restart between Linux and Windows 7 for different tasks.

    I recently upgraded my PC to a processor Intel Core i7 - 3930K on a motherboard ASUS X 79 Sabertooth (VT - d support in BIOS) with 32 GB memory DDR3-2133 2 NIC and an AMD HD graphics 7970.  While I have not a card SCSI or SAS in there, I have a 256GB SSD OCZ Vertex - 4 2 x 120 GB OCZ Vertex 3 Max - SSD IOP, a 600 GB 10 K RPM Raptor H/D and a Blu - Ray SATA writer.  The SSD & H/D is on SATA 6 Gb/s ports, and the Blu - Ray is on a SATA 3 GB/s port.

    I normally run Linux on my PC, but the photo post-processing software that I use (DxO Optics Pro 7.5) works on Windows 7 and using OpenCL to take advantage of the computing power of 7970 HD.

    I understand that the VMware ESXi 5 installs as a hypervisor directly on the hardware and then allows multiple VMs to be run simultaneously on the system.

    Read on ESXi 5 (see courses and link below), I don't know if I should add a SCSI or SAS card, or if I can install and run VMware and OS on the SSD Client, using the large Raptor H/D to common storage?  There is a 2 to drive Iomega NAS connected to my network (and I have several external drives with SATA or USB-3 interfaces), with future plans to add in addition to stand-alone drives NAS or a big NAS RAID Array.

    The main question I have is if the material resources are dynamically reassignables between Virtual Machines?  For example, if I'm normally running Linux, then I would most of the CPU cores and the video card to "assign" to this virtual machine - but when I need to process the photos, I want to be able to boot Windows 7 and "reallocation" most of the hearts of processor and Passthrough the 7970 HD for this virtual machine to provide the computing power for the DxO Optics Pro.

    Is it possible to use VMware ESXi like that, or I'm better stop the PC and reboot between operating systems?

    Thanks for your ideas and suggestions.

    Take care
    David Baldock

    For Serial ATA (SATA), a drive connected through taken SAS controllers supported or supported integrated SATA controllers. SATA drives will be considered remote, non-local. These discs will not serve as a partition to scrape by default because they are too far away.

    Note
    You cannot connect a SATA CD-ROM device on a virtual machine on a host ESXi 5.0. To use the SATA CD-ROM device, you must use the IDE emulation mode.

    Install ESXi 5u1 on the system, then upward, setting it up as a host server. Then use another computer (Yes, you need to have another system actually configure/use the host) to configure passthrough and others. I don't know if it's available in the free version, so you don't have to try it and see. Be aware that you will be able to use the video adapter on a virtual machine single at some point.

    I just activate DirectPath of e/s on my own host (a nVidia Quadro NVS 290) video card. It requires a restart until it's available, however.

    So, if this works (for you too) enable you, reboot the host and then attach one of the virtual machine to the video card to use. You will then be able to use your other system to open a console window in this VM (from the Client vSphere connect directly on the host server) to do what you want / need.

    In General, is not a big problem to use a SSD instead of a HARD common drive.
    The laptop supports the SATA interface and you use a SSD SATA 2.5 disk.
    I can't recommend a specific brand, but in some rare cases, it may be possible that you need to update SSD firmware offering SSD manufacturer
