  • Manage an ESXi host using vCenter Server?

I understand it is possible and requires of the specific licenses for ESXi hosts, even if I find information on the VMWare site a bit confused as to what I need exactly. We have-

    1 License Server Standard 4 x vCenter

4 x vSphere Enterprise license 4 (who manage our ESX 4 hosts this site)

3 (and soon 4) remote sites that have the same server ESXi

I would like to be able to manage ESXi host using vCenter as well, is this possible with what we have? If this isn't the case, can someone direct me as to what it takes?

    Thank you

You need the standard by CPU socket for each host license to add to vCenter.

You can always create a separate environment and get the Essentials Bundle (up to 3 guests max) for $500:

    http://store.VMware.com/servlet/ControllerServlet?Action=displayPage&env=base&locale=en_US&siteid=VMware&ID=ProductDetailsPage&ProductID=126843700&RESID=psfyPAoBAlkAACQ2y-kAAAAX&rests=1277824287882

So you should have 2 vCenter servers.

  • Transfer rate between ESXi host using "Veem backup and FastSCP".

    Hi all

I have two ESXi host connected with Eth - 1 G ports on an HP switch

now I'm trying to transfer data between two hosts using "Veem backup and FastSCP" tool

a 1 MB/s transfer rate is normal? you know a way to improve the performance of the network?

Note that no collision or inadequacy not discovered on the way to the switch

    Thanks in advance

    Hello

This work is a line perhaps? If you use VMFS as target, you must double check the block size, if it is the default 1 MB, the maximum size of a vmdk disk is 256 GB.

The value you got 274878668800 bytes, divided three times by 1024, gives you exactly 256.0007095336914 GB. This is probably the problem.

PS: I saw your error screencap you come to Italy, visit us on the pages of Italian user :-) group

  • Can upgrade you 5.1 to 5.5 ESXi host using the zip file?

I read the KB articles which seem to indicate that, to upgrade an ESXi host, you must use a vSphere Manager or an ISO on CD or USB.   But I saw someone go from 5.1 to 5.5 by downloading a zip file and running the commands, as indicated in http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US & cmd = displayKC & externalId = 2008939.

When you connect through the vSphere client, it seems to indicate that it has updated to 5.5, but I fear that this may not be an upgrade path has officially supported or may be missing something.

Anyone here can comment if you can upgrade between the press point with a zip and and the upgrade of the above method fix?

    Thank you

Yes, it is a supported upgrade path, take a look here: VMware KB: methods of upgrade to ESXi 5.5

  • Windows 2008 R2 VM disk system increased substantially after moving from VM to ESXi host 5.1 to 5.5 ESXi host using vCenter Converter Standalone

    Hello:

I moved a Windows 2008 R2 VM from a 5.1 ESXi host to an ESXi host 5.5 using vCenter Converter Standalone.  The c: / drive system passed largely to where I now have to extend the volume.  Is this normal/expected behavior?  Perhaps the conversion/move creates temporary files I can delete?

    Thanks much for the ideas.

This is not the expected behavior.

Size of the disk is defined during the conversion and which will not increase by its own during conversion.

Now, you need to V2V, if you want to reduce the volume.

I have worked in related directly to each ESXi host and selecting the ESX host, in respect of the summary page, there is a link to dissociate it from vCentre server.

  • Nested ESXi - problem when adding the cloned ESXi hosts to the same data center in vCenter

    Hi all

I installed a VM ESXi5.5 on top of WOrkstation10 and made a clone of it. Two of them are accessible and functioning very well themselves.

However, when trying a add these hosts to vCenter, he begins to complain that:

"Data store"datastore1"is in conflict with a store of data that exists in the data center which has the same url.

and will not let me add the second host. Is there a way to fix this?

    Any help would be appreciated...

Try to delete the local data store and re-create it.

  • Best design for the use of 8 physical network interface cards on a 5.1 ESXi host

I have 8 physical network cards to work with on and 5.1 ESXi host using Enterprise Plus license.  I need to repair the following traffic:

    Management traffic

    vMotion traffic

Virtual machine traffic (probably 2 natachasery will suffice for this)

    NFS traffic

Won't fault tolerance.  Natachasery-how much should I dedicate to NFS, vMotion, and traffic management?  What failover policy I should use (active / active) (active / standby) for each?

It is business more licensing and vSphere distributed switches are used.

    Thank you

Yes, I would put the backup in the switch as well as management traffic and vMotion is they use vSS or vDS. The other option would be to reduce your vDS for NFS traffic of 4 natachasery 2 natachasery and then or to add to the existing vDS that contains management and vMotion VM traffic to add it extra bandwidth or create a new vDS with these 2 natachasery. But at the point of my original thought around creating a vDS is based on all of my bandwidth throwing together and then cut it but I want it and do not have to trade around natachasery after the fact. But there are so many different ways to achieve that is the fun part.

  • 5.5 ESXi hosts disconnection of the vCenter 5.5.0b

Good evening.  I recently deployed some new hosts HP BL465c G8 running the HP OEM install ESXi 5.5 (not the one just released 02/18) and the two hosts have been disconnect from vCenter four times in the past week.  I can sometimes connect to the host via ILO and restart the vCenter agent, but more often without having to start the host hard.  In addition, one of the VMFS5 content of the data store disappeared and the virtual machines residing on this data store have declined because the hosts could not find the configuration of the virtual machine files. Strangely enough, the data store showed spaced used and I could see all the directories within the CLI, but not vCenter client or Web-based Client.  I have two tickets to windows with VMware from HP support team, but I wanted to know if someone had a similar problem.  I'm tempted to rebuild with the latest OEM installation or rebuild as 5.1 or 5.0 if version 5.5 is not fully cooked.  Thank you.

    Scott

The issue proved to be the OEM HP install and specifically the pilot v1.1.7 for HBA QMH2572 adapters that it contains.  We have rebuilt our 5.5 ESXi hosts using installation OEM HP published 02/14 (contains recommendations
v1.1.12 pilot) and that solved the problem of stability.

  • Retrieve message to ESXi host Summary tab "Configuration issues."

Using VMware Perl SDK API, how to get the message of 'Problems of Configuration' tab summary ESXi host?

For example, I have an ESXi host disconnected from the cluster, and in the summary for this host tab, there 'Problems of Configuration' message "disconnected from esxi_hostname in esx_clustername." "Reason: expired license."

Is it possible to recover the message above through Perl SDK API? The host is already disconnected from the cluster, not sure if this is possible.

Yes, you can take a look at the configIssue (http://vijava.sourceforge.net/vSphereAPIDoc/ver5/ReferenceGuide/vim.ManagedEntity.html#configIssue) for the object HostSystem connecting to vCenter, i.e. When this information appears. It contains a table of configuration problems and it is exposed in the API, which means that it can be accessed by using one of our SDKs including the vSphere SDK Perl

  • How to restart annex 5.1 ESXi host?

    Hello

Any method of restart ESXi host 5.1 on the calendar? Thank you.

    Kind regards

    YMIM

You can schedule the reboot of the ESXi host using PowerCLI.

Install the PowerShell and PowerCLI module on any Windows System.

    PowerCLI start programs

or, you can run the commands below on PowerCLI prompt to test.

Then save it the script to run as the specific annex filename.ps1 and Windows Task Scheduler.

    SE connect-VIServer vlab-esxi2 - root username - password "password".

    $vms = get - vm | where {$_.} PowerState - eq "Receptor"}

    foreach ($vm in $vms) {Shutdown-VMGuest - VM $vm - confirm: $false}

    sleep 60

    Restart-VMHost-Force - confirm: $false

See this post to know how to program a PowerCLI script.

  • ESXi host security

What is a good strategy to use AD to authenticate access to an ESXi host?  (I don't want to use root).  Can I create multiple groups in AD with different levels of privileges to access an ESXi host using SSH?  Or can I only use the ESXADMINS of the group do?

    Thank you!

    Hello

Fixing a VMDK broken-> glass break

Configuration of the equipment of CLI-> break glass

With the help of AD does not lighten the need to reset the password every day 50 +. That will still happen. AD simply adds the ability to add other users who are managed remotely, it does not control 'root '. So you still have to do that. This is why I don't really like integrate AD ESXi, I rather integrate HyTrust and let HyTrust manage my passwords. It will change them automatically for you every X days. It will be Thycotic and Xceedium actually. Two other password systems. You can already use one in your store, if you do, see if it will work with ESXi.

Regarding the ESXCLI, some esxcli orders can be executed with nothing more than your credentials of vCenter. Some require 'root' access to run. Even user access may not work. If you use the vSphere Management Assistant, you can control who does what on a host as well. I prefer it on powershell. Or sit on a Windows or Linux host vCLI. I have this and the use of powershell. Adapt the tool to the solution. I use them all according to what it takes. My scanner to 'security' for example uses vCLI/SDK on Linux and uses your credentials from vCenter for most. If it requires identification information specific vSphere I report only to VMware to solve.

I'd build my own tool using puppets, Chief, or Perl and wait for it to change passwords, set the new password in an encrypted safe and another tool to recover, connect through a proxy and capture my actions for the purposes of audit, can once again change the password automatically with 50 + guests. Again, it is a glass break situation that requires additional verification. All of these features can be duplicated using the free tools and a little ingenuity, but it can just take the time to do.
