Ethernet to the airport also on?

I have my Mac connected directly to our home Airport Extreme via an ethernet cable. That same Airport Extreme acts as our main wifi router. Until recently, I didn't cause to turn on the wifi of the handiest airport on my Mac, but I have to if I want to use the new Sierra "unlock with Apple Watch" and copy and paste between the characteristics of devices, that which I want to be able to use.

My question is, is my default Mac using the connection of the cable as my internet source or have two internet connections active will complicate things?  Is there a way to prevent the Mac to use the wifi for the internet, but still have it on for the other features it offers?

Thank you.

Nevermind, I found the answer outside this area communities:

http://www.Macworld.com/article/3039842/Macs/can-you-use-Wi-Fi-and-Ethernet-on-a - mac-to-the-same-SystemRoot\Cluster\Reports\Validation

You can dictate the order of preference for which network source is used in settings > network on your Mac. By moving "Ethernet" upward, your Mac always uses the Ethernet Wifi or any other sources listed below, as long as the Ethernet is an active connection. If something happen with your Ethernet connection (cable comes off, maybe) your default settings for Mac to the next source in the list that has an active connection.

Apparently there is nothing wrong with having active ethernet and wifi connections at the same time.

where can I find a coaxial cable to the adapter cable ethernet to my Airport - have time warner line coming into the House but need to ethernet adapter to use the airport for router and modem

Unfortunately, a co - ax for Ethernet card will not help you.

The reason is that the Apple AirPort routers do not have a modem on board, you therefore need an external modem separated if you want the airport to be able to provide Internet access to clients connected.

Co - ax cable connects the modem. Then he use an Ethernet cable to connect the modem to the "O" WAN port on the router from the airport.

Check with Time Warner for recommended modems that are compatible with their service.

  • DeskJet 6940 connected via ethernet to the airport cable, do not print

    Hello

I used to run my HP Deskjet 6940 printer using a USB connection. I recently installed an Apple Airport Extreme so I can print wireless. If necessary, the printer is connected to the airport by using an ethernet cable and turned on the light green network. On the advice of a HP rep by phone, I uninstalled all old HP software and reinstalled HP software downloaded from the HP website.

When I try to add the printer to my 'system preferences', it opens a panel that contains the following options:

Protocol: Automatically selects "line printer daemon - LPD.

Address: Empty but allows me to type in the IP address assigned

    Print using: no idea.

More than two things: when I open the HP Device Manager and select "set up a network, information network configuration printer seems in good condition but the Manager does not allow me to 'apply'.  Not sure if this is important but no the printer utilities appear in my folder utlities since the new software download. Thank you.

Looks like you are using a Mac.

First of all, the driver for the Deskjet 6940 is built into Mac OS.  You really didn't need to download additional www.hp.com (sorry for the bad advice) stuff.

Next, we'll check that the printer is on the network.  In Safari, select bookmarks, display all bookmarks.  Select Hello in the left pane, and then check the Deskjet 6940 appears on the list of devices on your network.

Then, follow these instructions to reset the print Mac subsystem: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1341

Now add the printer to the Print & Fax under System Preferences applet by pressing the [+] button.  The Deskjet 6940 should be among the kind Hello from printers.  Select it and press Add.

I think that should do it.

  • Why is my slower than wifi ethernet download speed when using the airport extreme?

    Hi all

This is my first post here, so please bear with me. I currently own stunted 2011 Macbook Pro 13 inch and an extreme A1521 from the airport. My ISP has promised 50Mbps downloading and sending 10 Mbps. When I connect my MPro via ethernet/wi-fi to my modem I get as promised. When I connect my MPro via wi - fi to the extreme I get 48Mbps download download 9Mbps and it's ok. However, when I connect my MPro via ethernet to extreme I get 8-9Mbps download and 9Mbps. Anyone know how to fix this?

If you check the 'fine print', your ISP has promised "up to" 50 Mbit/s and 'up to' 10Mbps.  The ISP might provide more than that during periods of slow activity, like the days of the week during the day, but much less during evenings when there are many more users on the Internet.

When I connect my MPro via ethernet/wi-fi to my modem I get as promised

I assume that you meant to check the Ethernet connection, you disable WiFi on Mac when you do this. And unplug the Ethernet cable when you check the speed of the WiFi, correct?

If so, this tells you that the Ethernet port to both the modem and the Mac work properly, and WiFi work correctly as well.

When I connect my MPro via wi - fi to the extreme I get 48Mbps download download 9Mbps and it's ok.

If this tells you that the Ethernet connection between the modem and the AirPort Extreme works correctly, and wireless works fine on the AirPort Extreme.

However, when I connect my MPro via ethernet to extreme I get 8-9Mbps download and 9Mbps.

Well, you know that the Ethernet connection between the modem and AirPort Extreme works because you can register 48 Mbps Wireless.

Thus, the possibilities are narrowed to two elements at this stage:

    (1) the Ethernet cable is defective or making intermittent contact. Try another Ethernet cable, to ensure.

    (2) If you have turned off AirPort Extreme and rebooted several times, and you know that the cable between the Mac and AirPort Extreme works properly, then you have reduced the question down to the Ethernet on the AirPort Extreme, which is probably defective switch.

If you have not already done so, try other ports Ethernet on the AirPort Extreme.

As a last resort, perform a reset material on AirPort Extreme and put up again. To perform the Hard Reset... power on AirPort Extreme for a few minutes, then hold it pushed in the reset button on the back of the unit (near the AC power plug) for 7-8 seconds and release. Allow a minute for the AirPort Extreme restart orange light flashing slow.

I once went through two consecutive airport extremes with the same question about 8 months ago, so it can happen.

If you're still having problems, then it is time to take the AirPort Extreme of Apple Store... If you have one near you... or contact the Apple Support directly by clicking on 'Contact the Support' in the upper right area of this web page.

    Good luck!

  • The Airport Extreme WiFi intermittent 2nd generation

I'm having a weird problem with loss of WiFi on my Apple Airport Extreme.

My 2nd generation that apple Airport Extreme Base Station began to close its WiFi broad signal several times.  It happens usually after 60 minutes or less works very well.  Power on and the new runs for awhile until it stops again the WiFi.  Green light normally forward either static rest without flickering to indicate data transfer, or it will just dark.  Sometimes it will turn off WiFi and then restart WiFi a few minutes later and appear to be good.  But mostly it just stops and I can, he extinguished/turned on to operate correctly with the WiFi again.

Airport Extreme is connected by ethernet cable to my modem/router main fiber (which is a different floor home) and it is set to "Bridge" Mode  It worked without any problems and I did no changes to my system.  My ISP did update my modem broadband fiber a few weeks ago to a "Virgin Media Hub 3.0"I understand was made by Compal.»  It seems to work perfectly and I have no problems with speed download or reliability in wireframe.  I was away from home for about a week and was able to access my wireless IP camera remotely via my Airport Extreme with no problems.  The problem started almost immediately on my return, but, as I said, I did no changes to my network.  I have never had this kind of problem before with my Airport Extreme.

I am running OS X Yosemite on an iMac that is connected by a cable ethernet to the Airport Extreme and seems to work very well even when WiFi is de-energized on the Airport Extreme.  Airport utility reports the airport as current firmware version 7.6.7.

I used network utility, Fing, and it showed that my Airport Extreme has multiple IP addresses, which seem to conflict with the IP address for my three AppleTV.  I manually changed the IP addresses of the Apple TV to another IP address not conflicting, but Fing always shows that my Airport Extreme has three IP addresses and I still have the problem of WiFi.

Any other suggestions on a probable cause of this problem or the best way to solve the problem would be much appreciated.

    Thank you!

The question is the 2nd generation AE is now too old.

I would say the power supply (external or internal) is dying.

It service life is approximately 5 years... your must be 8 years old. so the solution is simple... buy a new one... or I'll tell... Newish...

Can I use the Ethernet connections on airport express at the exit of music over wifi to a set of speakers?

    Sorry, but no.

I don't want to use the PIN audio output on the Airport express, as it is analog

Perhaps you weren't aware that audio port on the AirPort Express audio book Terminal analog or digital, according to the type of connector used. See this link on the AirPort Express specifications to confirm... http://www.Apple.com/Airport-Express/specs/

In other words, for the Express deliver audio analog, connect a standard stereo mini plug with connectors appropriate to the other end.  To ensure that the Express deliver audio digital, plug a mini Toslink cable to the audio port on Terminal AirPort Express.  An example is in this link... • The airPort Extreme (2007) and Time Machine

    Hi all

I read the info "how to ask a good question" and apparently you need details. I'll try and be concise but informative with my problem. It has been a long journey to get to where I am, but hopefully, with a little help from this amazing community, I can get to my destination.

    Task

To produce a backup solution Time Machine for the family spending as little money as possible and using the BRIC and broc, I already have.

    Equipment available

I have a House with some ethernet cables for most rooms that through switches to allow a variety of, most entertainment devices to communicate. It is:

    1 x NAS/Media (ReadyNAS Duo v2) server,

    2 x TV (Samsung),

    2 x TEU (Beyonwiz),

2 x Apple TV (a 2 nd generation the other is the latest version)

    2 x DVD players,

    1 x iMac.

    2 x 8-port switches,

    1 x 16 switch ports,

    1 x AirPort Extreme (2007).

1 x Airport Express (age unknown but older than the extreme)

    1 x Fritz! Box 7490 Modem/Router

    Courses in place

All the associated TV stuff are connected in 2 rooms through ethernet via switch 2 x 8 ports switch 16 central port and then to the Fritz! modem/router box.

There are also all the usual WiFi going on with mobile phones, iPads and laptops.

Remarkably, it seems just to work!

However, I want to add some backup data on our computers. I tried to do by using the ReadyNAS as it is supposed to support Time Machine, but I can't it to appear as a backup destination. So, I thought, as I have AirPort Extreme, I add it to the network and attach a USB HDD for Time Machine since it is supposed to be easy. However, I've been home for hours and cannot make the HARD disk appear in system preferences/Time Machine.

I plugged the Airport Extreme in one of the switches 8 port said to create a wireless network with the same details as the Fritz! The box according to another article of the support (Airport Extreme wired AND expand network - need of entry). Airport utility shows me Wi-wired connections and seems to work.

I look at the AirPort Extreme disks tab and can see the attached USB drive here. However, it does not appear as a choice of drives available for backup in Time Machine preferences. I tried 2 different discs with the same result.

    The Question (finally)

How can I get Time Machine preferences to show the USB disk attached to AirPort Extreme as a valid choice for backups? If anyone can give me a little help in the right direction, I would be very grateful.

    Thank you for reading this,

    Grant

Unfortunately, the key here is that the version of AirPort Extreme you have does not officially support Time Machine backups on a drive to the USB port of the device.

The only version of the AirPort Extreme, which will officially support Time Machine backups on a drive in the USB port on the airport is the 802.11ac current version that looks like a "tower". Older versions of 'flat and square' of the AirPort Extreme don't support Time machine with a USB drive attached.

To check, please see "Time Machine in charge of USB drives" in this Apple support document... AirPort base stations: discs on USB - Support Apple

Support for time Machine to USB drives

OS X Time Machine supports compatible USB drives encrypted, related to the time Capsule (802.11n and 802.11ac) AirPort and AirPort Extreme (802.11ac).

Given that the average life of most wireless routers lasts about 5 years, and your AirPort Extreme seems to be about 9, your AirPort Extreme did very well for you... much better than the average. It might be time to start thinking about a replacement who will be responsible for backups Time Machine... either a time Capsule (i.e. an AirPort Extreme with a built-in hard drive) or another AirPort Extreme.

  • Not switching devices not between the bases of the airport?

    Hi all!

I write because that through my research, I have not found quite the answer.

I have 5 Airport extreme (AP) in my house. One of them is connected to the ISP (this also ISP DHCP box) box. All of them are set up to extend wifi as a long string.

The problem I have is that I can't connect the AP via ethernet, creating a network of "roving". Is it possible to approach but?

Because currently my devices switch base station that I propose. If I was connected to the AP1 and I'm still in the range of it, I don't connect at the base next to me (which has a faster speed of the internet) and my connection is slow/drops.

    Is there a solution?

    Thank you!

    Best

    Alex

The problem here is that wireless between the airports will not quite work... If they work at all.

You have a 'main' AirPort Extreme connected to your ISP modem/router using an Ethernet cable, and the airport is to 'create' the main wireless network... is that correct?

And, you want the other 4 airports to extend wireless signal from the 'main' airport... is that correct?

If so, then all the following 'rules' must be applied:

    (1) your 'main' AirPort Extreme must be at the heart of your home

    (2) each airport expansion must be on the same distance from the AirPort Extreme

    (3) each extension airport should be located, as it is closer to the 'main' than any other Airport Extreme AirPort which is the extension of the network

The reason is that Apple offer wireless are works such as the hub and the spokes of a wheel.  AirPort Extreme 'main' would be 'hub' and each of the 4 Extenders would be located at the end of the separate 4 "rays". In this way, each extension connects directly to the 'main'... airport which is the only way an airport can extend wireless network.

In other words, you cannot "extend" the network several times. Although you can have multiple extensions, each of them must be connected directly to the "main" airport  They cannot connect to another airport that extends the network already and lay it again.

So, please tell us how well your current configuration meets the 3 above for a comprehensive wireless network.

  • Is the Airport Express optical fiber compatible? (Verizon Fios)

Is the Airport Express optical fiber compatible? (Verizon Fios)

Verizon wants me to have one of their routers. Is it necessary if I already have an AirPort Express?

The airport is a router, not a cable modem. Verizon are likely to provide a cable modem that is also a router, and therefore has an entry for the cable and several outputs ethernet; It can also have wifi.

You can probably turn off wifi if you prefer to use the airport; and there is nothing prevents to connect airport entrance to one of Verizon output using its wifi and ethernet ports. As long as it is reasonably recent, it should detect that it is connected to a router and configure properly.

  • Problems of ' 09 Time Capsule to the Airport Extreme upgrade

I with success the setup a new Airport Extreme (AE) and I want to continue to use my Time Capsule (TC) 2009 as a backup drive. However, I have questions. What is the right way to implement these devices to play nice?

I have currently the modem ethernet fall on the AE WAN ethernet. Then I have another ethernet cable connecting the AE LAN ethernet in the TC WAN.

In addition, I have the TC Network Mode as 'OFF' and his router Mode as 'Off (Bridge Mode).

    Is everything is OK?

All correct so far.  Also check the Internet tab to ensure that the TC is to connect using DHCP = AirPort Utility.

At this point, what other problems are live you?

  • Is there a better application of configuration of the airport as the Airport utility?

Utility of the AP does not have options for what he used.  Is there a configuration utility more professional which can be used with the latest AP Extreme, Express and Time Capsule?  For example, the AP utility won't let me configure my extreme from AP to "connect to a network.  The only options are "Create a wireless network", 'Extend a wireless network' and 'Off '.  It WON'T let me set up my Airport Express like that, but I would also do that with my AP extreme, since it is only six feet from the main Internet access (Time Capsule).  I don't really need two transmitters as close to each other and I cannot use Ethernet in this case.

This is just one example.  If for no other reason, I would like to see what other settings are available with the hardware.  Y at - it a more complete installation utility?

Y at - it a more complete installation utility?

Sorry, but no.  More than 3 years ago, Apple has removed 20 + useful features and options of AirPort Utility.

If you still have an old Mac running Leopard (10.5.x) or Snow Leopard (10.6.x), you might be able to use it to look for options of 'missing '.  A PC with the AirPort 5.6.1 for Windows utility may work as well.

  • no more WiFi which extends from the airport express and Time capsule

I have no more WiFi which extends from the express airport and Time capsule.

    and once it worked...

airportconfiguration-app also works, but the graphic display allows to have a straight white line. now, it's one interrupted...

Your unbroken lines in airport show connections ethernet utility... broken lines show the wireless connections.

So it depends on the extend method you used.

I think at this moment, things are configured wrongly... for some strange reason things happens and elements on a stand-alone basis, return to a default mode.

The best way to manage it is full factory reset on everything... and repeat the installation.

I have no more WiFi which extends from the express airport and Time capsule.

It seems to me that you extend a NON-APPLE router... in this case, your Apple routers must connect by ethernet and create a wireless network. Routers Apple cannot extend the NON-APPLE router wired.

The express could extend the TC or visa versa... by wireless...

Then I suggest say us what is the main router in the network?

You have connected by ethernet to the TC or Express or both?

If so please reset completely the two elements and try again. Make sure they are in bridge mode... It's the network tab. Router Mode is turned off.

And your wireless tab is configured to create a wireless network...

Use the same name (SSID) and even the security setting and the password as the main router to network roaming (extend wireless ethernet).

If the Express and transport CANADA are the same, both will have this configuration... If the express extends to wireless then it should NOT be connected to all the way to ethernet... (sequel to wan side at least) and it will be set to expand wireless on the wireless tab.
