Family Tree Maker Version 16 installation problem

I need to install Family Tree Maker Version 16 on new computer which has Windows 7 and IE 9 64 bit.  When I try to install I get the message that Family Tree Maker Version 16 Setup has detected IE 6.0 (or higher) is not on this machine.  Since IE 6.0 (or later) is required, you want to install it now.  What should I do now?

The next thread (especially the long post of "Jim - CT") has a number of tips to the subject of making the work of the 16 with Windows 7 64-bit version: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-windows_programs/want-to-load-family-tree-maker-version-16-onto-lap/1868a1f4-5a73-4498-82d4-dcc9a0efec8e

I am trying to load Family Tree Maker version 16 on my lap top. I have Windows 7 64 bit and FTM claims, it does not load on 64-bit.  Whjat I do now?

    Hello howstreet,

First, check to see if the program is compatible with the Windows 7 Compatibility Center.
Family Tree Maker is recommended upgrade if your version is earlier than 2008 FTM.

If you have an older application for Windows XP or Vista, which does not work in Windows 7, you can make it work properly by running the program in compatibility mode.
    1. to start, find the application or the shortcut which is the cause of the problem, and then right-click on it and select Properties.
    2. then, select compatibility in the menu tabs at the top of the properties page:
    3. now check the box run this program in compatibility mode "dethrone" and select the operating system you want to emulate. For most applications, this will be Windows XP SP2. Once you are finished, click OK.
    4. When you then run the application, it must run under compatibility using the OS mode you have selected. If it runs properly, try another selection of OS in step 3, and then try again.

Run the installer in compatibility mode:
1 right click on the file icon installation.
    2. click on properties > compatibility.
    3. Select the compatibility mode for Windows XP.
    4. click on OK.
    5. run the installation program.

After installation, run the program in Windows XP compatibility mode by doing the same thing with the installed program.
If this does not help, if you are running Windows 7 Professional or ultimate, you can try the program in XP Mode and Virtual PC. If you use the version of Windows 7 Home Premium, you can not use the XP Mode but can perform a search on the internet for 3rd party virtualization programs. You can find a few free programs that are very good.

    I hope this helps.

  • My Vista SP1 is not compatible with my Family Tree Maker version 16. __

I have the program windows Vista SP1 and my Family Tree Maker version 16 is not compatible with it. What should I do so that I can use this program on this Vista computer? Thank you

    Hi tondsmith,

Family Tree Maker is compatible with Windows XP? (You don't actually say if it worked on Vista but is no longer works since installing SP1). If this worked on XP and then try to install in compatibility mode.

1 / locate the "setup" for Family Tree Maker file and right-click on it.

2 / in the drop-down menu, click Properties.

3 / in the Properties window, click the Compatibility tab.

4 / in the compatibility window you will see a section (top) marked 'compatibility mode '.

5 / in this section, you will see a box with the words "run this program in compatibility mode for" to the right.

6 / click in the box to appear a "tick".

7 / in the dialog box below, you should see "Windows XP (Service Pack 3)."

8 / If you don't see it, click the arrow to the right of the box and select Windows XP (Service Pack 3) from the drop-down list.

    9 / Finally, click OK.

10 / your Family Tree Maker software should now begin to install in compatibility mode for Windows XP.

If this does not work (it usually works) then you may need to upgrade to a version of Family Tree maker that supports Windows Vista.

  • When you try to reinstall Family Tree Maker version 9, I can't go past a required DLL file error message. LTKRN10N. DLL was not found.

Family Tree Maker no longer supports this version, but I don't want to upgrade to a new complex program.  Do a search, I found a page of FTM, who explained that the program needs a set of files to display and manipulate images.  These files are supposed to be installed as a group and the software will check for one of them.  Support provided FTM one page set of measures to "solve" the problem, but it did not work for this version.  Supposedly, the file is found somewhere in Windows.  I'd appreciate any help.

    Hi bendtraveler,

As there is a specific problem of the program, I suggest you to contact the manufacturer of the program for better assistance on this issue since it is not related to Windows.
  • How can I update v16 Family Tree Maker (windows XP) to install on Windows 7?

My old computer used Windows XP and had Family Tree Maker version 16 on it. I now have a new computer with Windows 7. I tried to install my old program on the new computer. During the Setup process a message came that says that the program is not compatible. Is there a fix, or does that mean I have to buy a new version of Family Tree Maker?

Try to install in Windows XP compatibility mode. If this does not work, buy the latest version.

  • Incompatible program, I have a problem with my ancestry Family Tree Maker program 2012

I have problems with my ancestry Family Tree Maker 2012 program.  I have contacted ancestry and have tried everything they suggested a fix.  Maybe they thought THAT FTM crashed in windows.  When I click on the FTM icon on my desk a message appears indicating that FTM was badly closed the last time.  He suggests to compact the file, but I can't get open FTM to do this.  The message keeps telling me that Windows has detected a problem and he'll let know me if a solution is found.  When I right click the icon FTM the menu has "inconsistent application" at the top.  When I used the resolution of Windows problems he also indicated an incompatible application.  FTM was working great for me.  Inproper closing was caused by a power failure while I was with FTM.  My computer is a lot of work and is common to the updates being FTM.

    1. what version of Windows are you using?
2 have you made changes on the computer before this problem?

If you are using Windows 7, I suggest you to try these methods and check the status of the issue.

After find you the program that is causing the problem, you will have to perhaps to update or install a newer version of the program, if you rarely use that you should consider uninstalling the software.

  • My Family Tree Maker 6 2005 version will not work on Windows 7

I've recently set up a local network with the computer of my husband that is running Windows XP. There our version 6 Family Tree Maker 2005 installed and wish to access it from my new computer running Windows 7. Family Tree Maker, I installed from the original CD (him even that we used to install it on his machine originally), but when I try to open our family through the network, I get the message "the file you are trying to load is from a newer version of Family Tree Maker and cannot be loaded. To upgrade the call 1-800-548-1806 (a number in the United States). I didn't update anything because the two installations of the program should be the same. Help!

It's just a thought - is - it possible, some time after that you installed version 6 of 2005 on the XP machine that an update of some type has been downloaded or installed to it and so it's actually newer than what's on your disk that you have installed on the Windows 7 computer.  Most of the software indicates the version number detailed in a Help menu and choosing an element of words.  You could try to see if the versions are actually on both the.  As you may know, they have a support site, but it probably won't have a great utility for the 2005 version: http://www.familytreemaker.com/Support

    Hello

    • What version of Windows are you using?

    Please see these methods:

    Method 1:

You can check the following link and try to run the Fixit to solve the problem.

When you run an .exe on a Windows Vista-based or Windows 7 computer file, the file may start another program

    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/950505

    Method 2:

  • I saved my family tree on my desk, now I can't open family tree maker in W8

I got a new laptop.   I copied my family tree from my old computer to a USB key.   I downloaded Family Tree Maker 2009 on my new computer and copied on my family tree on my desk.     I was able to open it and it worked fine for a while.  Then, I had a problem w/Ancestry.com with my password and have corrected since.   However, now I can't open Family Tree Maker from my office.   He tells me that the file is not closed correctly, to go to the Tools Menu and the "Compact Files.   I don't see any "compact" file in the Tools Menu.  I have probably several genealogical trees open somewhere, but I can't find them.  Thank you!  Kathleen, Lawrence, MY.

    Hi Kathleen,.

-What is the exact full error message?

I don't think that Family Tree Maker 2009 is compatible with Windows 8. Reference: Compatibility Center. I suggest a right-click on the taskbar and select Task Manager. In the Task Manager, click on more details and under the control of process if you can find any instance of Family Tree Maker, if so, click on the process and click end task. Also, restart the computer for a couple of times and check if you are able to open the application.

As a work around you, try to install the application in compatibility mode and check if it helps.

If your Family Tree Maker 2009 version number is lower than 18.0.0.307, you need to install the latest update. To check your version number of Family Tree Maker 2009. See the help link and check out them.
