File CTK.vmdk

Does anyone know what a ctk.vmdk file that exists in a vm folder?

Yes, the CTK files are processed by VMware for all virtual machines with track changes enabled. It is an advanced technology that allows products supporting the changed block tracking (such as Veeam Backup and replication 4.0) for making extra passes extremely fast.

CTK file contains information of the VMDK file to track changes. The concept is quite simple (it is my understanding): CTK file describes the State of each block for monitoring purposes and contain the USN (sequence number) for each block in the corresponding VMDK. In this way, any application can request a VMware API "tell me what block changes since THAT time', and the API that will tell easily by simply comparing the sequence number provided with the current USN on each block. If provided USN is smaller than the current one for particular block, the block has changed (and must be backed up, replicated or other treatment).

Basically, there should be one CTK file by file VMDK and CTK the file cannot grow out of proportion to the number of blocks in VMDK (because it stores only 1 card per block VMDK). CTK file is thousands times smaller than VMDK real, because it stores only a few bytes of information (USN) for each corresponding VMDK KB 256 block (I'm sure it is 256KB, used to calculate a time using debug/stats CTK data, just don't remember not sure to 90%).

These files are permanent and cannot be deleted after backup/replication.

I hope this helps!

  • -files ctk.vmdk keep coming back.

    Hey guys,.

I have problems with the ctk files - keep reappearing.  I am aware that this has to do with the change block Tracking (CBT) but I need it disabled.  With this licence, I am unable to properly use VMWARE JETTÉ TOOL COMMENTS BACK (get them).  I think that it is a tool to backup old Dr. VEEAM that allowed them in the first place, but since we moved to 6.0 VMWARE replication we need more CBT.  Here is what I do to turn it off, but it keeps turned on again.

I downloaded and used the script from the following link:

    https://www.Veeam.com/kb1113

Basically, it resets the CBT without having to stop the machine.  Sets the " " ctkEnabled "value to " false.

After he is executed, the '-ctk.vmdk ' files disappear and I am able to use the tool COMMENTS BACK to the freespace Windows operating system through VMWARE, which in turn transmits the information to my SAN.  Whole slim and trim!

After about one day, CBT gets reactivated on its own and the '-ctk, vmdk "files reappear.  I don't know if this has something to do with the way I'm disabling online or another software is kind of allow.  If it is because I have to stop the machine so he could stick so I'll do so during our next scheduled maintenance window.

    Any info will be appreciated.

    Thank you.

The script you mentioned is usetr for the RESETTING of the CBT so it essentially disables CBT creates the snapshot and deletions of snapshots and activate CBT return.

  • Reset cbt - cannot get rid of the ctk vmdk files

    Hi, I have a known problem with the backup of my virtual machines where I need to reset the CBT. The procedure I have the backup software is as follows;

    Solution:

Please follow the steps below to reset the CBT for a specific virtual machine.

    1. turn off the virtual machine

    2. right click on the virtual machine, click on "Change settings", find the 'Options' tab and click 'settings of Configuration.

    3. set the value of 'ctkEnabled' to false

    4. set the 'scsi0:x.ctkEnabled' to false for each disk of the virtual machine in question

    5. open the source folder and remove all - CTK. VMDK files.

    6. turn on the virtual machine

    7. power off the virtual machine again. This step is necessary to update the table of CTK.

8 turn on the virtual machine

    9 replay backup task.

So I have 2 VMs. VM1 and VM2. Both are win2k12 r2 (they are created the same day, the same way, installation of r2 std win2k12, patches, etc...). In step 5, for both servers, even if I delete the ctk.vmdk files, they are automatically reproduced so I can't delete them. Then I continued with the neverthless steps. After step 8, I saw that for VM1, has more ctk.vmdk files so that they are deleted somewhere in the process by the server itself. So my guess is that step 5 is not relevant. The problem I have is that even if I did exactly the same thing for VM2, ctk.vmdk files are never deleted. I reboot 3 times, I tried to manually remove them several times, they always, never to return, they are deleted.

So, basically, I can't reset the cbt on VM2. I double check this ctkenabled are all 'fake' (tried also uppercase) still no luck. Any ideas how I could get rid of these ctk.vmdk files?

    Thank you

Hi, proved that there was a snapshot. As soon as I deleted it, the ctk files disappeared.

  • Help recovering files flat.vmdk supplied thickness necessary!

    Hi all

First of all, some background on my current configuration (and I'll try to keep it short and sweet)...

I have 3 1 than to hard disks in a 5.x ESXi host I use in a RAID5 array.  The RAID is actually implemented and managed by a guest Windows Server 2008R2 VM on the host.  When I created data warehouses to build the table, I've formatted each of hard drives and added inside the vSphere Client as VMFS data stores.  When I added the readers to the configuration of the VM of comments, I put them to be supplied thick lazy-reset and all 3 have the same size (930.2899996 GB).  Each disc has an and a single VMDK and this VMDK takes up most of the usable usable VMFS partition sectors.  Inside of the guest, the virtual disks were formatted using Windows Disk Manager like dynamic GPT disks without starting and then adjust upward in a RAID5 array.

    What has happened...

A week or if there is during a backup/cleaning of the virtual machine, I accidentally deleted a 2nd guest VM which has also consulted with data warehouses (I was testing Windows Server 2012R2, impressed) without separate configuration of the 2nd VM first, data warehouses and eventually remove the VMDK files from the disk.  I am recovering files flat.vmdk at least 2 of these discs.  As this happened, I spent many hours of research online about VMDK recovery and disk running scans trying to find the missing VMDK (again unsuccessfully). Nothing has been written to one of these discs, and the VMFS partition is still in-tact.

    I know...

Geometry of the disk, the file names, logical sector size and number of sectors files missing VMDK (recovered in the log file of the last successful start-up of the VM)

Using the above information, I have a model created for a descriptor ready replacement VMDK file as soon as I can retrieve images flat.vmdk

    What I've tried so far...

ESXi Shell & vmfs-fuse-> Navigation data storages show volumes are empty.  VMFS-fuse mounts the volume, but no VMDK file cannot be found.

UFS Explorer-> same basic idea.  VMFS partitions are found easily and show good healthcare, but I can't find the files there, either.

Hexagonal view using of UFS Explorer, I autorévisés several areas that I know are within the area of data and verified the parity RAID5 withdraws (to be confirmed), it seems that the data is always there and in-tact.

DiskInternals VMFS Recovery-> attempt to analyze the disk, after 36 hours of scanning on a single disc had not yet reached 10%.

    What I would like to...

Find the starting location for the file flat.vmdk for each disc and do an image binary dump of this position to the end of the VMDK file (sector of end computed by the starting location + number of sectors for the VMDK's newspaper).  Since all 3 discs are identical in the sense of VMWare, this place of departure should be the same for all 3 disks.  I have an external HD to 3 TB in waiting for the dump once I know not where to start.

Worth I feel is actually locate the start position in hexadecimal view (I do not know what hexadecimal values, I need to look for).  Sanbarrow (continuum) of the site (VMDK-basics), he said he's looking for the mbr as header of the file, but I've not found in my records.

Last note 1: this isn't a company or business system.  This is my personal home server and I have legitimate licenses for all the OS running on the host computer.

Grade 2: Yes, I * have a backup, but it is around the age of 2 months and lack about 300 GB of files that have been added since the last backup.  Can I recover a good part of the missing data (about 60 GB) back to the source and copying/download files, but there are still about 240 GB that I can't copy (source no longer exists).  My fault for not having more recent backups, but worse is still not a TOTAL loss (about 85 percent recovered from backup & original sources).  All disks in the guest system VMDK is stored on a separate DSS and have experienced good backups of the primary system on a separate disk drives).

Any assistance with this would be much appreciated!

    Thank you

    Brian

    Ok...

So, after several weeks and countless hours my best, I finally decided to give up and call it closes unexpectedly.  Finally, I reformatted the hard drive and rebuilt the RAID from scratch - it is just the initial synchronization now and I will fully bring my last backup to the table at this stage ends.  The most important things I have known and confirmed backups of already, but I'll never recover the archival footage that I had done previous laptops, but at least it's not a TOTAL loss.  I've not spent by them in a long time, so I doubt that something very important, but there are still some bugs the stew out of me.

What bothers me more, however, is the lack of response at all here.  I read on previous posts on the subject, describes the situation in detail as well as what I need help with, and after 3 weeks and 60 views... nothing.  I thought that VMware would have an active, reactive and useful community much more than that and I must say that I am very disappointed.  I hope that all those who might find themselves in this situation is able to get the help they need.

    I hope everyone has a great 2014!

  • Help, XP won't boot, missing the virtual file Disk.vmdk

I am attaching a file "collect information of technical support.

Don't know what happened, virtual disk of the virtual machine consists of 21 slices "Virtual Disk - s001.vmdk" through the "Virtual Disk - s021.vmdk", but a couple of these files are missing. Unless the files are still present in another folder (for example lost + found), or in the compartment of bits, then I'm afraid that only a recent backup will help.

If you have any more of these files, it may still be possible to extract some files in the current hard files by replacing the missing files by dummy files.

  • Cannot add again invited in Fusion 7 hard disk file existing (VMDK)

    Hi all

Since the upgrade to Fusion 7 (and MAC OS 10.10) I can't select an existing VMDK file to add to a newly created virtual machine: all the VMDK files (any directory they are in) are dimmed in the dialog box.

No idea what is causing this behavior?

    Thank you

    Tim

Assuming the DescriptorFile hard disk exists s ("Virtual Disk.vmdk" vs binary scopes for example "Virtual Disk - s001.vmdk") with disc type twoGbMaxExtentSparse that only the hard disk DescriptorFile not will be not grayed out when you try to add an existing drive so that the only other thing that comes to mind is permissions.  Normal authorization on the hard files by default is 0600 or - rw - from a Terminal.  BTW, I have no problem adding an existing drive to a computer virtual with VMware Fusion 7.

  • Could not open a file to VMDK using SAN transport using Netbackup 7.1 "you don't have access rights to this file.

    Hello

I'm trying to backup VMware clients using Netbackup for VMWare 7.1 using the type of transfer to san, and the forum NBU told me that my vm-admin user has no right of access to the VMDK file. However, I checked and I can download the backup host VMDK files and take and remove snapshots as vm-admin user.

The servers are configured as follows:

    vc01 is a Win2008R2 vSphere 5.1 Server

ENC1-bl09 by enc1-bl12 are blades running ESXi 5.1

VM-bak01 is a Win2008R2 NBU media server 7.1 server and is defined in NBU as backup VMWare host

Data warehouses that contain the VMDK files for the guests are all about EMC and HDS storage accessible via the San by the NBU Media Server and ESXi servers (although mapped through different areas)

ESXi servers have access to local data and NFS storage warehouses too, but none of these warehouses are used by clients.

I could save a few guests we via NDB, but they finish in time because the network is not fast enough. Estimated time of 8 days for nightly backup!

  • Merge files delta.vmdk to parents

After several days of search/search on Google, I can't find the solution to my problem...

Here is my situation, I have a basic flat disk, a disk of delta1 based on basic disk and a delta2 disc disk delta1-based. How to merge the delta2 delta1 disc but not basic disk drive?

More recently: I use the SSD as a data store and is very limited in space. All my VMs on the ESXi host are clones related since a flat basic disk using the decsribed here:

    http://sanbarrow.com/linkedcloneswithesxi.html

virtual machines are works fine, except that the snapshots and its associated delta records are never deleted. I have tried disk Consolidation without success. It still gives the error as "impossible" access file because it is locked. It makes a little sense because my other running virtual machines use this basic disk.

So, what I'm looking for is a way to consolidate/merge records delta up to a certain level, not all the way back to basic disk. I can make using VM Workstation but cannot find a way to do this in ESXi.

I took another look at your files and considered options to delete all snapshots easily by merging them in the file hard in delta first linked clones. I did some tests in my lab environment and found a solution that worked for me. If you want to try, make sure you backup the 2 folders (based on VM and VM clone) before doing anything, so you can return to the current state, in the case where it doesn't work for you!

    Here are the steps:

    • Turning off the linked clone
    • back up folder of the clone bound as the VM home folder!
    • Remove the clone related inventory
    • replace the file .vmsd of the clone related with the one I've attached
    • Add the clone related to inventory
    • create a new snapshot
    • Open Snapshot Manager, then click on 'clear all '.

What lines in the .vmsd file are supposed to do, is to make ESXi aware that he is a clone related with its own drive 'base '. Once everything worked as planned, the .vmx file must point to "DXP3Download.vmdk" as its virtual drive and all files from snapshots should be gone. As I've mentioned before, there are a few snapshot files that do not appear in the log files, so these files (probably 000032-...) may need to be removed manually.

Don't forget, you proceed at your own risk. However, "no risk, no fun!

    Hi all

I am fearing the worst, but thought I'd ask the question in any way.  We had a power outage last night and the UPS has not stopped the our virtual machines (it's a long story).

When the power came back, I tried to restart the virtual machines, but I get the same error for each a saying

    Has no power on VM
Could not power on VM: invalid metadata.
Failed to initialize file ' / vmfs/volumes/xxxxxxxx ': invalid metadata

When I look at flat.vmdk files, it is said that they are 1 KB size and modified on December 31, 1969.

Has anyone ever seen this before and most importantly, can I recover my machines without resorting to a backup?

    TIA

    Welcome to the community,

I've never seen anything like this. I strongly recommend that you immediately open a call with VMware, if there are important data on these virtual machines which cannot be restored from the backup...

    Thank you

    Stewart

You can rename the vmdk and not rename the object itself, but the vmx file needs to point the the renamed disk files.  It is in this article, http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1002491, which I pointed out above.

in the .vmx file, you will see something like

    scsi0:0.fileName = "OpenSUSE.vmdk"

  • Snapshot errors

    My configuration:

    vSphere 5.0.0 469512

4 VM Instacnes, all courses using 6.1 Veeam backup

6.1 Veeam backup and replication help

    Monthly full with incremental backups.

My backup jobs fail on ONE of the 4 cases.  A cruical to this.

Veeam support indicated that my snapshots are the cause which is not a Veeam support issue but rather the problem of VMWare support.  When I go into my vSphere Client, I see no snapshots in the Snapshot Manager.  However, I have seen this error in my events:

Warning on the Email message. This virtual
machine has 255 or more redo logs in one
creates a unique branch of its snapshot tree. The
    maximum supported has been
reached, creating new images will be not
be allowed. To create new images,
Please delete the old clichés or consolidate
    the redo logs.
    warning

Then I went to the record in the data store and saw all the Email - 000001.vmdk and Email-000001 - ctk.vmdk Email - 000255.vmdk and email-000255 files - ctk.vmdk.  I noticed while using Email - 000255.vmdk the files on hard drive hard drive 1, 2 and 3 respectively.

How can I solve?  I read on Google, I have two options:

    1. consolidate, but I don't have enough space or time so that I understood that it could take days.

    2. create a new VM and copy the disks, but which?

    3. use vCenter Converter to convert to another instance, even if it retains the slightest error to check the free space to Destination after 30 minutes.

I can not just delete all the Email - 000001.vmdk and files Email-000001 - ctk.vmdk?

    Hello

Certainly, you have exceeded the limit of snapshot.

    • The maximum supported in a string is 32. However, VMware recommends you to use only 2-3 shots in a string.
    • Do not use any single snapshot for more than 24 to 72 hours.

Since you have 250 + in the chain, the best way to get the data is to clone the drive via the cmd line >http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1028042.You can move forward, and then select the right data store (destination) that has enough space. Also check the snapshot more important in the chain and start with the same, even if you are to ignore others.

Move forward to ensure that we do not end up with the same scenario, I suggest you go to come set up alarm that fires whenever a virtual machine is running on a snapshot >http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1018029
