Fixing of the bad blocks

In the earlier version of the operating system, if you had a few bad blocks on your hard drive you can use disk utility to erase the drive, check for bad blocks and somehow isolate these defective blocks to not be used.  El Capitan appears not have not not this as an option.  He do as standard?  Is there another way to isolate the bad blocks?

The installation is redundant these days because modern disks are "SMART", which detects and remaps blocks without the OS X find out about it. Once defective begins reported to the level OS the drive has run out of 'reserve blocks' and it is likely to fail completely in the very near future.

My advice would be to immediately back up and replace the drive.

  • NTFS bad block errors in Event Viewer

    I have a Dell 510 m with XP and a Toshiba HD. There are a few bad blocks that I see with the Diagnostic CD. They have not worsened in recent years. Recently, I saw a few 'Bad Block' errors in the event viewer. Diianostic CD shows me a bad block as before.

    My question is: when the Bad Block error, is to say that the ranking system, NTFS marked which also block bad, so he's not getting used again?  Otherwise, CHKDSK (the /R option?) will find the new bad block and mark it unusable?  If not, is there a way to do this?

    There is no option to replace the HD. I just need to keep this laptop going long enough to decide what to buy to replace.

    Thank you

    Peter

    24 KB in bad sectors. = 6 clusters currently is not a serious problem. However, you must check regularly for some time to ensure that the number does not increase.

    Of course, any bad cluster can be bad news if it coincides with the location of a vital system file.

    You must also use chkdsk for repairs under this part of the report:
    Correcting errors in the Volume Bitmap.
    Windows found problems with the file system.
    Run CHKDSK with the /F (fix) option to correct these.

    Edit, Find with Volume Bitmap use search for more information:

  • NTFS-bad blocks

    Hello
    A couple of times a day, I get this error in the event viewer:

    The device, \Device\Harddisk0\D, has a bad block

    I don't know what it means,

    (a) I have a couple of new bad blocks each day, or
    Guard b) NTFS hit the SAME bad blocks once or twice a day

    I guess that the second. I would have thought that if the bad block allocated, NTFS self-identify as unusable. If its probably in a file.

    Yes, there is a way to establish which file (s) is affected?
    Is there a way to know how many blocks faulty NTFS think there?

    I am reluctant to let chkdsk trouble the front disc, I know what is likely to be affected.
    CHKDSK in read-only mode is a single error in the index and full custom.
    Is there a way to repair the index (without making the repair of security) so that chkdsk can complete and me with bad blocks?
    Thank you

    Usually, it's "Bad sectors", blocks probably means a larger surface area.

    The best way for a repair, is to boot to xp, to the menu of the cd installation cd,

    Press the key r (recovery console), recovery, select 1 for c:

    Press button for password. Type: CHKDSK C: /R

    Once her thru, type: EXIT

    Let xp start, remove the cd.

    In addition, bad sectors, blocks defective, only means a faulty drive, be prepared to

    replace it. If you run an IDE hd, use xps. XCOPY

    This already installed utility allows you to move all the data from the hd to another hd,

    Set the new slave, nearest to you to MB, format it, run, type: diskmgmt.msc

    Once through, go to run, tpe: XCOPY C:\*.* D:\/c/h/e/k/r

    Are for everyone in the window BACK, once its thru, youre done. D: being

    the new hd, so different asigned letter, then use instead.

    During RMAN validate the structure I noticed that I have a lot of files with the corruption of the data. Then, I run DBVERIFY and identify files and database objects. I know what to do with broken tables and indexes, but the 2 lines are strange for me:
    (1) object with the segment type 'TYPE2 CANCEL' on undo tablespace
    (2) block broken on data file user who is empty (without any object on it)

    What I eat sort of these bad blocks or leave without changes?

    My DB: 9i
    My OS: Linux x 32

    Ok thank you. So this bad empty block leave without doing anything? I ask because I do not know if Oracle making a few flag automatically or not. Flag means a space Oracle knows it's bad block and do not write something again in the future.

    If it's the bad block, then it is still impossible to write too...

  • "The device, \Device\Harddisk0\DR0, has a bad block" on Dell Vista SP2

    I am repeatedly getting the error "the device, \Device\Harddisk0\DR0, has a bad block." in the event viewer. Recently, I fixed a security problem that prevented me to install windows updates. For this, I ran CHKDSK (see results below), System File Checker, and a complete analysis of the system of McAfee, spybot and Malwarebytes, both in security and the good start. How can I check for errors on my HARD disk?

    --------------------------------------------
    My problem earlier wire: http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/is/genuinevista/thread/60c76236-abd2-4fea-8980-007f424a8eb0

    Although most things seem to work very well, "the device, \Device\Harddisk0\DR0, has a bad block." error still occurs in the event viewer despite the installation of updates/CHKDSK and SFC. Check the results of said disc 'the volume is clean' and the System File Checker showed no errors. Windows resource protection did not find any breach of integrity. Any ideas, what is happening?

    In addition, I don't know if this is related, but a problem with the wireless network connection keeps recurring. "Windows wireless service" is not automatically start during the boot. It must manually be diagnosed and started. He gave the following error message:

    Hello

    You look at the statistics of SMART to see if the hard drive is a failure.
    http://mikemstech.blogspot.com/2011/12/how-to-detect-failing-hard-drive.html

    If he is not in default, you run chkdsk /f /r to ensure that bad sectors are marked. One way to do this forum works it offline.
    http://mikemstech.blogspot.com/2011/12/how-to-perform-offline-system-integrity.html

    If the disk is failed, you may need to save your data,

  • Bad blocks on the new drive

    I have a HUS724030ALE640 HGST fairly new (7 k 4000 3 GB Ultrastar) that shows an unusual number of bad blocks (107) for a new disk. I just bought 26 of them and the rest 0 defective. Should I guarantee return this puppy?

    Get information from the disk utility:

    Reallocated sector Count : 00000000006 B

    bad blocks has been published after use, or they were already there after unpacking?

    If the last: I wouldn't worry about 107 defective at all.

  • How do I unlock "the disc has a bad block"?

    "My computer information" error log has about 200 "legacy - disc - has a bad block."

    I did Defrag, disk cleanup and eraced of things that I don't use much

    I think that the block of 'bad' is interfering with "Outlook Express" also

    Select Start, run, type cmd and press ENTER. Type "chkdsk c: /f /r" without the quotes and press ENTER. Make sure you include the spaces indicated. Enter Y when asked if you want to run chkdsk on restart the computer. Quit and then restart the computer.

    Marking bad sectors on a hard disk takes time so be patient. Delimiting does not repair a defective sector. He places pointers to the reader by saying the system not to read or write to these areas that have been damaged.

    If the number of defective sectors continued to increase after using the procedure above several times, then you should replace the disk. If an important system file is written to a bad sector, you can corrupt the registry hives and lose the entire contents of the disc.

    However if have run chkdsk you not see more new bad sectors, then the reader can work for you for years.

    I tested it on three computers different windows 7 and I still got the same error.
    CnMemory support won't accept as an error, they say that it is the problem of Microsoft Windows 7.

    Here is one video.

    Hi Edward,

    Welcome to the Microsoft Community Forums.

    It seems that the system marks all free clusters as bad and the event log registered as "the device, \Device\Harddisk1\DR1, has a bad block. We will analyze and identify the cause of the problem.

    Perform the steps:

    Method 1:

    Queries or sets the bit of impurity of a volume. When the volume dirty bit, one is set, autochk automatically checks the volume for errors the next time the computer is restarted.

    Syntax-

    fsutil dirty {query | value}

    Reference:

    Fsutil dirty

    http://TechNet.Microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc788091.aspx

    I would like to know the output of the following command:

    fsutil fsinfo ntfsinfo

    Method 2:

    You can run Chkdsk from WINRE.

    In order to solve this problem go chkdsk from WinRE (Windows Recovery Environment) mode and search for the issue.

    You can follow these steps to run CHKDSK:

    a. use the Windows 7 DVD to start the computer from Windows Recovery (WinRE).

    b. in WinRE, open a command prompt. To do this, follow these steps:

    c. on the screen to install Windows, select the language to install, time and currency format and keyboard or input method options and then click Next.

    d. click on repair your computer.

    e. click on the Windows 7 installation you want to repair, and then click Next.

    f. click on command prompt.

    At the command prompt, type the following command and press ENTER:

    CHKDSK drive: / p

    CHKDSK drive: / r

    CHKDSK warning:

    Important: When running chkdsk on the drive if bad sectors are found on the disk hard when chkdsk attempts to repair this area if all available on which data can be lost.

    Hope this information helps. Get back to us if you have more queries about Windows.

  • Bad behavior of cancellation with the additional block end no OnNewStep

    Hello

    I'm working on StepTypes requiring a block structure, as loops in TestStand (using TestStand 2012). I use OnNewStep lower level to insert the end block no during the boot block is instantiated.

    I do not manage to get a good behavior of cancellation with it as follows:

    • If I do not use SequenceFile.IncChangeCount in OnNewStep stage, when I select Cancel in the sequence editor, the only stage of boot block is removed, the end block remains. My understanding is the expected behavior: motor TestStand don't know that the no end block has been added, she has no reason to remove it.
      However, I prefer to remove both start and end block as follows, as do with While TestStand, DoWhil or for loops.

    • If I do a SequenceFile.IncChangeCount in the OnNewStep stage, when I select Cancel in the sequence editor, I get the following error, and nothing is deleted or cancelled the sequence:

    I guess TestStand increments the ChangeCount when I insert a step, and OnNewStep also increment the ChangeCount, while the operation should be considered as a single action.

    I found in the documentation of the UndoStackclass with the method AggregateTopUndoItems method, I suppose, may be the solution. But UndoStack seems to be available only from ApplicationMgr and SequenceFileViewMgr (which are not accessible from the context of the sequence).

    Any idea to get similar behavior at the correct stage of control of native stream, with cancellations?

    Best regards

    Well, I found a solution by looking at what is happening in CommonFlow.cpp (\National Instruments\TestStand 2012\Components\StepTypes\FlowControl).

    For your information, here is the code:

    Insert a corresponding END step after step again
    ' public static void OnNewStepWithEndStepFunction (SequenceContextPtr & sequenceContext)
    {
    If (! sequenceContext-> sequence-> HasMismatchedBlocks)
    return;

    PropertyObjectFilePtr file = sequenceContext-> SequenceFile-> AsPropertyObjectFile();
    StepPtr endStep sequenceContext-> engine =-> NewStep ("", gEndStepTypeName);
    UndoItemCreatorPtr undoItemCreator sequenceContext-> engine =-> NewUndoItemCreator (EditKind_InsertStep, file, L"" ");

    undoItemCreator-> BeginEdit (endStep-> AsPropertyObject());
    sequenceContext-> sequence-> InsertStep (endStep, sequenceContext-> StepIndex + 1, sequenceContext-> StepGroup);
    undoItemCreator-> EndEdit();

    _variant_t ;
    endStep-> name = (char *) sequenceContext-> engine-> GetResourceString ("FLOW_CONTROL_STEPS", "END_DEF_STEP_NAME", "", &found);)

    file-> IncChangeCount();

    to do this, or the step type will not be displayed immediately as being used by the file
    file-> TypeUsageList-> AddUsedTypes (endStep-> AsPropertyObject());

    undoItemCreator-> CreateAndPostUndoItem (CreateUndoItemOption_NoOptions, TS::ApplicationSite_DefaultSite);
    }

    So the trick is to instantiate a UndoItemCreator that points to the current SequenceFIle, to call BeginEdit with, as an argument, the step to insert as PropertyObjetct, before calling the InsertStep method, then call the EndEdit method. Increment the file change, add the step as PropertyObject in the TypeUsedList file and finally call CreateAndPostUndoItem method.
