Free space suite iPhoto to move Photos

When I was invited to migrate my iPhoto library pictures, I didn't know I'd end up with double consumed disk space.

My Macbook Pro (mid-2012 retina) has a 512 GB HDD and my original library resumed ca 227GB, so woops, almost all of the capacity has been suddenly consumed.

So, step 1, to be sure, I copied the old iPhoto library on an external drive, where he consumed now 227GB.

I then deleted the original iPhoto library from the hard drive of my Macbook, expecting release of the same CA 227GB and emptied the Recycle Bin.

But now it looks like I won only about 10 GB of free space by doing this, so my almost full hard drive is almost full.

Is there some cleanup process I have to follow, in order to free the other 200 + GB I thought I'd be able to go back?

TIA

When I was invited to migrate my iPhoto library pictures, I didn't know I'd end up with double consumed disk space.

This isn't.

While both libraries claim to manage 227gigs of space, by the magic of unix hard links, it's the same 227 concerts, good enough. In other words, the two libraries are pointing to the same files on the hard drive. So, the removal of the iPhoto library back 10 GIG because it's all the content of the library that was exclusive to iPhoto.

Bottom line, you still have the same amount of space used, as you have, nothing has really changed.

  • Move photos on external hard drive after migrating from iPhoto to Photos

I have a lot of photos and have you run out of space on my MacBook.  After doing some reading, I discovered that I should be bale to move my library to an external hard drive, then the point of Photos to run from the external hard drive.

I have recently updated to El Capitan, and as part of this upgrade that my photos have been migrated from iPhoto to the Photos.  I just checked the current location of my library and I found two.  One is named Photo library and which resembles the pictures one use which makes sense.  However, I also have a file called iPhoto library and it is listed as a library migrated under file type.

My question is, when I copy my pictures on the external hard drive also I copy the migrated thus iPhoto library?

My question is, when I copy my pictures on the external hard drive also I copy the migrated thus iPhoto library?

Yes, if you want to free up your internal disk storage moving two libraries of the iPhoto library you have migrated your external drive and the new library of Photos.

The two libraries share the storage for the original images and previews.  As long as one of the libraries is always on the internal disk and using storage, storage is not released: see: Photos saves disk space to share images with your iPhoto or Aperture - Apple Support libraries

Drag the two libraries to your external drive, then double click the pictures library to open it in photos and test it. Once you are convinced that the copied library works well, you can delete the original in the internal drive.  Do the same for the copied iPhoto Library if you have installed iPhoto.

  • I have an Air of MacBk 2010 & I get the mssg "system is out of memory of the application", so it is impossible to open the Mail, Safari, etc.. But sometimes I can't. I deleted photos or videos for free space; no luck. What should do?

I get the message "your system has wearied of the memory of the Application." So I can not open Mail, Safari, or any application.  However, I can periodically, the first thing in the morning, after I Shut Down & power up, not after a reboot.  I deleted a lot of photos and videos to free up space, but not luck.  IPhotos, I get the mssg. "cannot import pictures because not enough free space on the volume containing the iPhoto library."     The problem might be related to: 1 overheating, 2 PureVPN although I installed about 5 months ago and it was very good; 3. the MB Air was diverted (I'm worried that PureVPN may have something to do with it).  Or is this a sign that I need to get a new laptop?  Thanks for any help you can offer!

release disk space and short-term memory are two different things. If your computer is running more disk space, it will have a negative effect on your system.

  • How to move photos all photos and remove iPhoto and Aperture libraries?

How can I move all the my iPhoto and Aperture photos to Photos and remove iPhoto and Aperture libraries?  Photos automatically links to the old library on migration to save space with two libraries.

As a related issue, there don't seem to be anyway to determine if a picture is stored when viewing Photos.  Incredibly frustrating when there are duplicates because how do you know who I should delete?

No - nothing is connected - once you migrate a library it is independent and did no link to the original library - you can remove it if yo want

However the removal of the original library will save the little space and is not repeated because it uses hard links to the original and previews so the new library uses little extra space

As duplicates - what difference does make? They are duplicates so delete an and smells like another - even - you do not have any what visibility of the underlying files (and do not need to do this) in pictures

Pictures is a new program and this is a learning curve - and is not a professional software like Aperture, so it is not expected at all what Aperture is - is better than iPhoto and get closer to the opening, but I doubt it will ever open

Hi Kirin, for more information on the other category in the view of storage , see this support article.

There seems to be a bug in the about this Mac Look storage tab > system report > storage. It's probably different.

Omni DiskSweeper can show you the exact size and location of all your files. It will be the inventory of your disc from files that occupy more space. It can also give you a fairer read disk space than the Finder or storage tab of the about this Mac. If you want you can even delete files from OmniDisk Sweeper. But beware, some items may be important for your system.

  • How to free space on the hard drive?

Hello, in my "On Mac" section, it says I 233 MB of space on my 121 GB of Flash storage. Previously, I thought it was video files, but it was buggy mac section. I refreshed, hoping he would show me how much space I had left, but he stayed the same. That is the problem. I use my macbook for College written work and - maximum - work on Adobe Creative Suite. When I work on these I use a separate USB key due to the size of the files.

The only files I have actively created/downloaded on my macbook are the files in the files of my 'Documents', 'Pictures' and 'Applications '. When I use "Get Info" on each, I see that my photo folder is great, My Documents folder is large 1.17 GB and my Applications folder is large 14,68 GB 889,9 MB. These are the only files that I use and backup the files needed for my Macbook running and working properly, the only files I want to keep.

My question is, basically, if there is a way to lose all the files on my hard drive that are not necessary to keep. I'm not too good when it comes to computers, so I don't want to not just randomly start deleting things. Just to get these road, my garbage can is completely empty and I have nothing in my downloads folder. I have also no large files to film and, when I searched my Macintosh HD for files larger than 500 MB, there is no evidence, so I guess that this is caused by a large amount of small files (I tried to restrict research naturally but then come files that I wasn't sure of what they have done and therefore have not removed the still). If it helps, my about Mac filed 100,64 GB of my free space as 'other '. But I know that is not how much space was taken when I got the Macbook earlier this year and it should not be the size of the files that comes with it by default. There is also a way to restore all the files on my macbook at their stage of default, that I would also be interested, especially if there is a way to do it without rid of files I already have.

I guess that's a very basic question, can someone help out me?

    1. never remove all the files that you do not understand the purpose. If you do, it's like opening the hood of your car and take bits out of the engine ebcause you think they are not necessary.

    2. it seems more likely that you must rebuild your Spotlight index.

    See the following page:

Update to iOS 9.2.1 requires at least 610 MB of free space on your iPad. Please change your synchronization of media options to make more available storage.

You have a question? Your free space currently on the iPad is indicated in the settings > general > available, the message you get is a generic message, for example if you've synced a lot of music or movies/TV programs to the iPad from iTunes on your computer, then change your sync options, deselect and then remove them from the iPad.

Or you can update via iTunes on your computer (in iTunes Summary tab), which require less space because it can use the computer (but that will download the iOS version whole, not only the update).

But however update you, first take a backup, copy purchases on your computer's iTunes library (file > devices > transfer purchases) and preferably grab your own copy of any important documents/photos

I can't defragment my disk hard because I need 15% free space and have only 12%.  It is a Dell Dimension 2300, aged about 10 years.  I run Disk Cleanup and delete everything I can think and moved large files on an external hard drive. Outlook Express is another source of wasted space.

You must empty the deleted items folder. Right click on the deleted items folder, and then select "empty folder deleted items.

Records of your Inbox and sent items should be used to store messages for a short period. Large system files are prone to corruption, and then you lose messages. It is much safer to keep themessages in a created Local user folder.

Compaction could earn a good amount of disk space.

A parameter that might be useless by default is that for temporary internet

If your drive is formatted as NTFS another potential gain arises with

the text of the name of the folder appears in blue. If it isn't
compressed, you can compress them. Right-click on each file and
Select properties, general, advanced, and check the box before you compress
contents to save disk space. On the general tab, you can see the amount
acquired by deducting the size on disk size. Folder
compression is only an option on an NTFS formatted disk partition / partition.

  • Is there a problem if I extend my drive c with any free space?

I have a 750 GB HDD partitioned into 5 seats, namely

    c:---75 GB
    F:---200 GB
    G:---150 GB
    H:---150 GB
    I:---103 GB
but since I have only 10 GB of free space left in my c: drive I want to extend my c drive but I don't have a copy of my windows, so I want to increase my c drive without format my drive c. any body can help?

The essential point is that the only way to extend a drive is that it cannot be that in free space is contiguous to the partition that currently hold the drive C. open disk management and in the lower pane confirm what partition is now to the right of the C partition. This is the one, in that you have to remove or change in order to provide a space for drive C to expand.

Although the disk manager has the ability to shrink a partition it will reduce only the right side at the end of the score but you need initially left space to the partition. If you can, as suggested by the most simple is to back up the content, delete the partition, extend the C drive, the quantity required and if any space flying over creating a new partition to restore the data.

You can also download MiniTool Partition Wizard , that allows you to define which end of a partition to shrink. However, the partitions on an active system manipulation it has its risks and it is strongly recommended that you perform a backup anyway before you start.

An option may be to move some of the files currently on the C drive on another drive. Although you can not move the whole user profile easily many key issues that often take up excessive space can be moved, particularly music, photos and Documents folders can be moved using a utility provided in Windows.
