Guests of workstation running on VI3 infrastructure - issues?

So far, we rotated only server O/S of our infrastructure VI3 (no treatment intense or interactive graphic type).  I wonder if I will support a few dozen invited workstation in this same environment. These guests could be interactive and graphic oriented. Is this a bad idea? Other people mix invited os server and workstation hosts in a single environment. We will be at a time looking for VDI and other desktop-oriented solutions in the near future. Optimization recommendations which should be made to these guests would be greatly appreciated as well. Thank you

We have about 8000 OS VM desktop computer and have seen great returns.  Most of them perform in their own instance of vCenter, but we have a handful that are running in the same vCenter as our server VM.  We created a new cluster for the Office of VM.

Here is a good book of white worth

  • 9 workstation running Windows 10 Pro?

Before I commit to upgrading my computer (i.e. the physical host machine) to 10 (from Win7) Windows, please someone can tell me if VMware Workstation version 9 on it survive the upgrade?

From the Win10 updated, I did it on some other machines some service applications non-Microsoft restarts automatically after the upgrade.

However, as long as a reinstallation of the VMware on Win 10 9, if necessary, gets me back to operational status after that the level Win10 and I do not lose the virtual machines then I'll go ahead.  But for-warned is for arm so all information would be welcome.

    Thank you!

Without even trying, I would say 'NO' because there are problems with 10 workstations running Windows 10.

You normally won't loose virtual machine if you select upgrade instead of a new installation of Windows 10, but to actually use these virtual machines, you must upgrade to VMware Workstation.

  • Our guests in ESXi running VMWare Workstation can join LAN

Educaional purposes, I have the following configuration:

1 'server' with 6 cores and 16GB of RAM

On this server, I installed Fedora 15

On fedora 15, I installed VMWare Workstation 7.1.4

Inside VMWare workstation, I have isntalled ESXi 4.1

Now, my problem is the following.

Any isttalled of the virtual machine in VMWare Workstaion can surf the internet and see the other devices connected to the local network. Physical and virualized machines.

Virtual machines installed in the ESXi peut obtain DHCP from the DHCP server on the local network or physical addresses.

Virtual machines installed in the ESXi cannot ping the GW, nothing beyond the Gulf war or other machines on the same LAN. BUT they can ping the ESXi...

For ESXi virtual machine is implemented with bypass and four NIC

Now, anyone have no idea why my Windows machine gets DHCP but cannot send traffic the other way around? For me t looks like it stops at the level of the ESXi host. But I canoe understand why.

  • I just bought a HP Win 7 (unfortunately) workstation running. My previous computer ran HP XP. Windows will not let me install my fonts.

Don't get me wrong, the HP workstation is great, it's Windows, I just can't stand.

I tried to double click on the fonts to install and Windows returns an error message. I tried dragging the fonts in Windows 7 fonts folder and it gives me an error message. I downloaded AFM to PFM because Windows says I need the PFM files, but when I run the AFM to PFM, it returns the message that the PFM files are already there.

I bought a laptop Sony a couple of years ago with Vista and fell on this problem. I despised Vista so I sold the Sony and remained with XP on my HP Workstation. In fact, I was so p - o'ed on Vista, I went out and bought a Mac Pro and Mac Book Pro, as I intend to dump Windows altogether. Unfortunately, the vast majority of my work required of Windows programs.

Given that, I decided to go for the new HP workstation because I had heard horror stories less on Win 7. I was then going to sell both of my Macs.

Unfortunately, it was a BIG mistake because now I'm stuck with a work station $3,400 that I can't use to work on my documents InDesign, Illustrator and Word that have all of the fonts I was running XP (and which run WITHOUT problem on my Mac).

It is a problem of Windows, and when I tried to contact MS supports, I was directed to HP since Win 7 is pre-installed on my workstation.

I just got the phone with HP Technology Support and they say they can't help because even if it IS a WINDOWS PROBLEM, they do not support software related issues.

I even tried to copy the font files to the Directory Windows on my old PC, nothing helps.

I'm willing to put this thing on eBay so I can't empty MS FOR GOOD!

Any help would be LARGELY APPRECIATED1

  • Will be hardware drivers installed on a guest OS is running even if they do not work on the host operating system?

    Scenario:

    VMware Workstation:

    Windows 7 SP1 64 bit host

Windows XP SP 32 bit comments

A scanner and a printer are available for Windows XP hardware drivers.  No hardware drivers are available for Windows 7.

If the hardware drivers for these devices are installed on the client Windows XP OS will work?

    Thank you.

Welcome to the community of users.

The answer is (as usual), it depends on...

My experience has been the following:

If your printer/scanner is usb based, there is a reasonable chance that it will work.

I have an old HP Scanjet (USB key) and an old Belkin UPS (USB) that both require drivers and software that only work under XP. I have an XP VM I'm running pilots of each device and software in and everything works.

I also have an old LasetJet HP (parallel port) that is not supported directly by Windows 7 and more. For this I used a USB-parallel converter > and in a VM XP, I am able to access and print. A Linux VM also recognizes the printer via the number of series-parallel adapter > and I can print it as well.

In any case, I only install the drivers for the virtual machine, not on the host computer. In fact, I can't install the drivers on the host computer, even if I wanted to, they can not even the installation of Win 7 and including Win 7-64 bit host.

If your hardware requires a custom Board, plugged into the motherboard (such as SCSI controllers) used in early scanners, the chances are pretty good it won't work that desktop doesn't pass through for PCI device (or other).

I had especially good luck with USB devices. (Not all, but most).

You'll probably just to try it and see...

    Good luck.

  • Workstation running inside Parallels 9 10

    Hello

I need to run workstation 10 inside Parallels for Mac 9.

I was able to create the virtual machine, but when I turn on the virtual machine, I get the following workstation error message:

Since I can't run 10 Workstation directly on my MacBook, is there any workaround solution you can suggest?

  • An image of vmware workstation running on ESXi 5.1 9

    Hello

I have a vmware image of Win Server 2008 I am able to run on a vmplayer running the Ubuntu 64 bit PC. According to vmplayer, it's a workstation image 9.

I also had vm workstation 8 32-bit on a 32-bit PC Win7, but I am unable to run the image here, probably because the host is only 32-bit.

I now run the image on a 64-bit server running ESXi 5.1. I know there are steps to export an image workstation to ESXi via my computer, but my workstation allows 32-bit vm convert a 64-bit image? What are my options?

    Thank you!

It is less the host operating system that is important, it is the CPU that you use and available BIOS options (e.g. "VT - x" for Intel processors)

ESXi does not support the format of sparse virtual disk Workstation uses by default, so you can use VMware Converter to convert/transfer the image of the workstation to ESXi.

  • openSUSE 12.1 as a guest in Workstation 7 / 8?

Hi, I checked the release notes for workstation 7.x and 8.x, but they say not much on what version of openSUSE is supported as a guest. I'm currently under openSUSE 11.2 in Workstation 7.1.5 (7.1.0 Release Notes say that this is supported), but I want to improve my openSUSE.

Is 12.1 openSUSE supported as a guest in the Workstation 7.1.5? Is 12.1 openSUSE supported as a guest in 8 workstations?

    Thanks in advance.

    Markus

12.1 openSUSE HCL is not supported in any of the versions of vmware work.

the latest version supported is opensuse11.3 on WS8.

  • At an i7-2820QM no advantage on workstation running i7-2720QM?

    Guys and murder,

I replace my desktop computer with a Sandy Bridge Mac Book Pro 17 or a Sandy Bridge HP Envy 17 3D (if HP ever releases it to the Netherlands).

I have 2 licenses of VMware Workstation 6.5 (Win), I will move to 7 when I bought the laptop.

With Workstation 7 (Windows) in mind, there will be any advantage to get the i7-2820QM instead of the i7-2720QM?

    I'll be switching between:

3-4 simultaneous 512 MB Ubuntu Server VM (windowed and reduced) and Aptana Studio into an Ubuntu Desktop VM (full-screen or windowed alternating).

    and

1 oracle DB Express with logical server in a VM Ubuntu (with windows and reduced), Oracle Fusion Middleware, Oracle's Tuxedo and Oracle JDeveloper in a Ubuntu Desktop VM (full-screen or windowed alternating).

And I'll also have IBM Access Client running on the host computer with up to 6 terminal/printer sessions open at the same time (negligible impact).

When the VMS works do not, I will be modeling in cinema 4 D first Sketch & Toon, drawing in Illustrator CS4 and Photoshop CS4, some Unity free 3D, navigation, watch the movie (3D) occasional strange, not HARD drive and not to make any game.

Looking at the specifications of Intel, except the price and comparing the differences between the two, illustrated below, the only significant difference is with the "Intel® Smart Cache and all the remaining specifications do not below are identical."  The obvious differences and expected, clock speed, frequency Turbo Max and Bus Ratio/base, are insignificant when you compare two processors when there is only a difference of 0.1 GHZ between the two.

Number of processor i7-2820QM Number of processor i7-2720QM
Clock speed 2.3 GHz Clock speed 2.2 GHz
Max Turbo frequency 3.4 GHz Max Turbo frequency 3.3 GHz
Intel® Smart Cache 8 MB Intel® Smart Cache 6 MB
    Bus/core ratio 23 Bus/core ratio 22

The real question should therefore be ready to pay the price difference to win such a marginal increase in clock speed, the Turbo Max frequency and the Bus/basic Ratio for the 2 extra MB of Intel® Smart Cache.

I doubt really would be able to perceive a difference of 0.1 GHZ to which however 2 MB of Intel® Smart Cache extra is a significant speed and for a power user this can make a difference but let face it goes down the price so I say buy as much computer you can afford everything in getting system that has all the other features need/want.

  • VM Ware Sever 2.0.2 - Workstation 7.0.1 compatibility issue

    Hello

I'm trying to move the flat vmdk file created on the Workstation 7.0.1 for Server 2.0.2. When I try to create the new virtual machine on Server - part HDD - use an existing virtual disk, I propose the 1Ko vmdk file, I get the message: "the selected file is not a valid virtual disk file. Please choose another. "Could someone advise where could be the problem?

I run md5sums check on both vmdk files, it's ok.

    Thank you.

Workstation always used a little descriptor plus a flat file for the type monolithicFlat - is the same with VMserver 2 (and ESX incidentally)

When this small descriptor file is considered invalid vmdk, you may need to clean the handle - it's easy - just post it or compare yourself...

A description valid vmdk defines these parameters:

    Version

    CID

    parentCID

    createType

    RW

    ddb.virtualHWVersion

    DDB. Geometry.Cylinders

    DDB. Geometry.Heads

    DDB. Geometry.sectors

    ddb.adapterType

If the vmdk descriptor which is NOT accepted set other parameters such as

    encoding

    isNativeSnapshot

    ddb.longContentID

    DDB. UUID

will help to remove this line very likely

  • VMware Workstation running without the GUI

I used to use VMware Server and configured to start some VM, I need on-site at startup. I went to the workstation to work with our ESX VM, so now I wonder if there is an easy way to get a similar behavior.

There is no a lot of information about this in the manual, I tried running ' / usr/bin/vmware - blah.vmx x ' when when I connect, but the graphical interface starts too. If I can remove the GUI and I have just the tray icon, I'd be a happy man.

Once my session X crashed and the VM kept working well, so I guess that there is a process that is actually running the virtual machine independent of the GUI somewhere can I drill to get the virtual machine started?

N ° workstation is designed for interactive virtual machines.  6.x and newer, the ability was added to maintain a virtual machine running in the background AFTER it was launched upward - however the GUI should be started to start/run prompt, AND user must stay connected (i.e. the virtual computer is running as a user process).  If you want to run virtual machines under services, using VMware Server.

  • LabVIEW 2011 Run time engine installation issue

I try to install Labview 2011 Run time engine as downloaded here: http://joule.ni.com/nidu/cds/view/p/id/2534/lang/en

on my laptop Windows 7 Pro. I have the hard drive shared in the C and D drive with plenty of space on each.

Initially the office IT guy tried to do the installation as an administrator and for some reason any installed at "D:\Program NIUninstaller Instruments\" for some reason any. He went through the installation without error, but after restarting, it seems that some of the components are installed. I never installed anything else OR on this computer, but after installation I see NI License Manager and Datasocket under National Instruments in the start menu. If I re - run the installer it seems to think that everything is installed and there is something to remove, but it is obviously not.

Subsequently the computer gave me administrative privileges on my account so I have been playing with various combinations of uninstall and reinstall myself but with the same result each time.

Any ideas would be very appreciated.

    Hi Robert,.
