openSUSE 12.1 as a guest in Workstation 7 / 8?

Hi, I checked the release notes for workstation 7.x and 8.x, but they say not much on what version of openSUSE is supported as a guest. I'm currently under openSUSE 11.2 in Workstation 7.1.5 (7.1.0 Release Notes say that this is supported), but I want to improve my openSUSE.

Is 12.1 openSUSE supported as a guest in the Workstation 7.1.5? Is 12.1 openSUSE supported as a guest in 8 workstations?

Thanks in advance.

Markus

12.1 openSUSE HCL is not supported in any of the versions of vmware work.

the latest version supported is opensuse11.3 on WS8.

So far, we rotated only server O/S of our infrastructure VI3 (no treatment intense or interactive graphic type).  I wonder if I will support a few dozen invited workstation in this same environment. • openSuse 11.2 Guest - it connects to the outside, nothing can connect to it

Help.  I did a little research and see nothing on this sort begins this thread.  I have XP sp3 as the host (32 bit) and openSuse 11.2 64 bit guest.  Vmware 7.0.  So I did a default installation of openSuse 11.2 as a guest, it installed fine.  I put her to the bridged network.  By default, it seems to have installed dhcp, that is fine.  Thus, linux guest system can connect to other resources on my local network and internet, so, it seems, networking is also a fine configuration.  In addition, I ping the linux system invited the host and all the other machines on my network.

HOWEVER, I am trying to run apache or glassfish in my linux system.  I know they are run properly, because I can start them and then open and connect to the latter via the firefox browser in the guest operating system.  However, NO other computer on my LAN can somehow (other then ping) to connect to the system called linux.  Any port or ulr I use.  If I didn't know better I'd swear there is a firewall installed and functioning as a default in the linux prompt.  However, from what I understand from others who made the installation of openSuse 11.2 even deafult tell me, this is ridiculous - there is no default firewall not installed with openSuse, so that it cannot be.  So I have no idea.  I've used several other windows guest operating system and they all work very well and can be access by other systems on the network (assuming I have set them as bridged).  So I don't really think it is inherent in vmware to change a setting, but there may be a special set of hoops you have to jump through to get a linux system works properly in a vmware guest.

ANY ideas?  I am at a loss and unfortunately am not at all a linux expert.

I think that comments firewall is turn on. Try to stop it and then try connecting to another customer. $/etc/init.d/SuSEfirewall2 stop or find the firewall script in /etc/init.d

  • VMWARE Workstation or ESXi

I currently run VMWARE Workstation on my Windows XP host computer. I have a laboratory facility 5 machine Windows active directory in an environment "TEAM."

It is soon time to expand my lab at 7 machines and want some advice on what I should do next. I was going to one of the 2 courses.

    1. update my PC by replacing the host OS 32-bit to a 64 bit OS. Get a more powerful CPU and go to 6 GB of RAM. I'm still worried about the disk i/o, however many machines with what I have all my guests running on a single hard drive. If anyone cares to elaborate on the performance by running that this many machines off 1 disc it would be greatly appreciated.

    2. get the material needed to create an ESXi whitebox. I really don't know much about the capacity or features of ESXi. I guess the main thing I want to know is that you can configure a function of 'The TEAM' as in VMWARE Workstation. I find this very handy feature.

If I decide to build an ESXi server, is installed in a VM guest in workstation for practice? Is this desirable?

From what you say in this thread, I think I agree with NWhiley. Stick to the workstation and add to your current HW configuration. I would definitely add additional hard disks, maybe even an external storage array. The outer table has a great performance insofar as, if you decide to go the route of ESXi to a later date, it will be easy to take your storage with you space. This will be your least expensive option (in terms of money & learning curve) and does not get to ESXi in the future. It's one of the beauties of virtualization, you can grow in stages

A virtual machine with this record is IMHO a ticket to the problems. I wouldn't like that of any useful data in a virtual machine.
Too much RAM and CPU using a vmdk more in addition to the other side.

If you really need the RAM and the CPU you should also give a preallouee vmdk virtual machine.

One little mistake with a drive can increasingly do all the unreadable disk.
Préallouée record on the other side are also stable and forgiving error like a physical machine on hard drives ordinary.

I use vmdk growing with a dimension nominal superior say 200 GB only for test VMs.
For virtual machines with VMDK preallouees only valid data should be used

I'm running a Win7x64 Machine (host and guest) with Workstation 7 and I came across a problem after a failed to stop... after that my host system restarted I could not start my guest operating system that the vmx file was broken.

I created a new machine virtual and added the original virtual disk (vmdk) and could restart the virtual machine. It was only after restarting when I realized that I've revertet to the initial state of the virtual machine and all the changes that I stored in snapshots disappeared.

So I tried to do the same steps again and instead of using the original vmdk, I tried to use the one of the last snapshot. But this was not possible (the virtual disk parent has been changed since the child was created)

Can I do to solve this problem? the parent disk was not changed at all, but I guess that the initialization of the system created new logs etc...

    symptom: guest vm

does not start: says "the specified file is not a virtual disk.

history: this particular comments works fine; I've done about 30 shots

during the last 2 months.  The guest is not a copy - even if she did start life as a full-clone

another linux-client with or without an operating system installed.  In any case, I've used it to very good

    effect for 2 months now.

So last night I wanted to power off of the host, while I lived my usual steps:

    (1) stop my os of burst (# shutdown - h now)

    (2) even worksation vmware (file - & gt; exit)

    (3) stop start vista (not "suspend" but the real stop turn off the power).

    (4) visa bluescreened.  Now she is doing this every so often, so I thought that it would be

    a big deal.

    (5) this morning I tried to turn on the virtual machine and I got the 'not a virtual disk' error.

My best guess at this point is the bluescreen stopped some write cache to be

flushed to disk.  The funny thing is, after the previous bluescreens 3 or 4, the

Comments to restart without a hitch.

shrug In any case, just to be weave, I disabled write Vista for outside cache

\vmdk_files - subdirectory of *.vmdk files, light, & can be useful
    -end-

I checked the VMDK and newspapers - and the VMDK all look great.

Last departure also seems to succeed?

As it seems that instant 36 is not used so far - I was just going to throw it away and try again.

To do this, you would change the line vmx file

    scsi0:0. FileName = 'suse11.2_x64 - cl1 - 000036.vmdk.

    TO

    scsi0:0. FileName = 'suse11.2_x64 - cl1 - 000035.vmdk.

and then try to restart the virtual machine. If that works then remove all the

    suse11.2_x64 - cl1 - 000036-* files

  • What is the problem with the bridged networking option?

I have an iMac intel with 2.5 GB of RAM under Snow Leopard, I recently installed VMware Fusion 3.0 and installed OpenSuse and Windows 7 as guest operating systems. Everything seems to work fine when I use the NAT option for networking. Whenever I try to use a network bridge or the internet or communication between the mac and one of 2 guests is possible (I have only run a prompt at the time). The system seems to create an 'unknown public network' that is an obstacle to any communication.

Does anyone know what could be causing this?

    Thanks in advance.

FWIW, I have no problems switching between NAT and Bridged under VMware Fusion 3.0 and Windows 7 or any other guest operating systems and with good connectivity between the host and guest network and/or reviews and comments.

One thing to remember when you change the default value of NAT at the bridge while the Virtual Machine is running, then one needs to release/renew the IP address.  Take a look at: Understanding Networking in VMware Fusion

As to which area Windows 7 puts the card network in the present has nothing to do with VMware Fusion and is only feature in Windows 7 and you, the user of Windows 7 need to learn and understand how the networking (including the Windows Firewall) is configured and works in Windows 7.

  • Nested VMS (XenServer)

    Hi guys,.

On my test machine (Dell XPS M1530), I fortunately run several ESX and ESXi 3.5 & 4 guests in Workstation 6.5.1 Build 126130 and these hosts are fortunately able to execute nested computer (Windows 32 and 64-bit) virtual guests.

However, I'm trying to gain exposure to Citrix products and downloaded and installed the free version of XenServer 5.5 and Netscaler VPX (virtual appliance).

I have managed to get of XenServer running without problem and can connect using XenCenter without any problems, but when I try to start the client device Netscaler VPX, I get the following error:

"HVM is required for this operation."

Google returns a few hits related to the nested running VMs, so I modified the XenServers including .vmx file:

    monitor.virtual_exec = "hardware"

    monitor_control.restrict_backdoor = "TRUE"

.. .and restarted XenServer - but still no luck.  Someone at - it any other bright ideas?

    Thanks,

in ESX you only need support from VT to run 64-bit clients - which means that you can run nested 32 bit machines virtual everything using ESX in my computer, but you cannot run 64-bit guests.

In XENserver its similar - you have VT-supported by Windows-guests - so this will not work when running that can run Linux-guests

Can I add this USB device to my virtual guest later in VMware Player?

I feel like the installation of VMware Workstation for just add this USB device installation. I have no experience of using VMware Player. I've always had of VMware Workstation to support me in everything I've done, that's why I ask.

I can only imagine that maybe VMware Player will limit to deal with the addition of devices/units, but what is the truth?

Peripheral USB themselves act as plug-and-play.  As long as you have configured the virtual computer to have a USB controller and have installed the drivers (via VMware Tools) in the comments, you can attach any USB device to the guest with workstation, player, server, Fusion, etc..

Workstation already includes the UI player interface so that you can test your VMS how they will be displayed to users who have installed Player.  There should be a shortcut installed for it.  You can run your VM via player INTERFACE and to answer to your question here, I think.

  • 10 workstation online best way to keep the host offline and guests?

Newbie question: Workstation 10 - have a host Windows 7 Ultimate x 64, several guests Linux Mint 17.3 (KDE). The machine is portable i7 with 16 GB of RAM. The network is wireless only (cannot use cable in current situation).

I would keep the Windows 7 host permanently out of the network. The guests are online and used for web and similar access. What would be the best way to set up on the side of the network, assuming that it can be done?

Thanks a lot for your help!

    PH

    Hello

Well this is... depends on what you intend to 'offline' for the customer.

If you are planning that the guests to be accessible from the outside (I mean through wifi to your host), the host has (?) to be somehow connected, so online?

There is perhaps a way to restrict connections from hosts on the outside... so that web page in emails do not work, but the host is will still be able to receive a part of traffic in my humble OPINION.

With my knowledge and my experience, I know:

-You can connect a guest with his * own * USB hardware. I mean you can disconnect from host a WiFi USB (or USB ethernet adapt) card and connect it to a given host. So the host could be offline (no wifi, no ethernet), but the guest can be connected through the material, it will set up.

-guests could communicate with each other via a 'host-only' adapter or a bridge (as your ethernet NiC).

-When the ethernet NiC host is physically connected (and guests on her bridge), communication between clients is broken... but a software solution is to add a dummy loopback adapter to simulates network card is connected. In this used during travels by train, without ethernet or wifi, to avoid changing the working configuration of the guests in bridge on the ethernet adapter that I used to have to work! :-) Modifying simply physical WMnet0 (eg) to ethernet virtual network configuration microsoft Loopback to tour.

Took the 3 above stated and your configuration:

    -1 host must be offline

-several guests that should be online

-ethernet to the home not connected

    You can try to:

-installation of a map of looping to the host (http://www.groovypost.com/howto/microsoft/install-a-loopback-adapter-in-windows-7/ )

-connect and configure a physical map of wifi USB to one of your comments (comments should have a virtual USB controller installed).

-share your comments above WiFi connection.

-Configure the * other * invited to use the above share under their gateway address (and DNS I guess?) and set up their virtual connection through the loop (you may need to manually change the address/subnet of the closure to match that of the shared connection).

    It's an idea to dig.

Own a unique login prompt works for sure, but use it as a gateway to the other guests might be the tricky part (at least for me)!

    My 2 cents! ;-)

    Kind regards.
