  Thanks for all the suggestions. Tried and thought about them, but made no difference. However, I found the answer:

  When you use the disc to 'restore' every time I was simply stack several operating systems on top of those already here. I have about a dozen versions or more I suspect No. 1 partition. This time, where do my last (I hope) restore today I paid more attention to writing when the options are available on the "formatting" the drive. Now, I completely formatted the Partition No. 1 (where I suspect that all versions of xp are kept) and pressed. Of course, the restoration has worked well and I now only ONE version of XP on my system. The display of 'properties' on the drive C: tells me now that I have less than 2 GB used and 28 GB FREE!

  Result?

  If you are using Vista, then you should consider that Vista creates an additional partition on the HARD drive.
  It s hidden and it contains backup files in order to repair the operating system if something goes wrong.

  In addition HARD drive must also contain HARD drive recovery files (image).
  These files are required to recover the laptop HARD drive.

  Frankly I'm surprised that you guessed it to install on a 5 GB hard drive, unless you have things backwards and say that you have 4 GB of RAM and a hard drive of 56.  And also, the amount of space that includes any version of Windows has nothing to do with how it performs.  Your CPU and graphics card will determine to a large extent that (assuming that you have 4 GB of RAM, which should be more than enough), and if they are too slow for Windows Vista there is nothing you can do to solve this problem.
