  My Seagate external hard drive does not seem to be able to connect to my mac mini... it had originally been used on an HP laptop and now does not seem to be identified on the time machine.

  To use TM, the drive must be formatted in Mac format. PC cannot write/Mac format, so I suspect that the drive is formatted in NTFS format.

  To use the disk go to disk utility in the folder utilities under the Application and format the drive. Note the disk will be erased.
