  All you need to do is to run the transfer Assistant again, and when it starts it will ask if it's the new pc or old.  Say that it's new and then he will be asked where the files are located and you direct them to the reader.  NOW, I did this on a pc once and had a little problem with the service pack level.  The SP should be the same as on the old machine.  for example, I saved on SP2, and I tried to restore the SP3 and it wouldn't work.  I had to remove the SP3 and then restore.   How do you reinstall Windows?  If you have used the HP Recovery system to recover from a hidden partition, backup should have been reinstalled.

  I suggest you call HP support.

  You can use a hard drive, but it is not the drive on which the system or the boot is running.  If you have a second drive in your system that contains system information or startup, you can use this disk for backups.  The wizard backs up (Start / Control Panel / backup and restore) will guide you through the process and provide you with the options you can choose to send the information - which should include this disc hard if it meets the requirements more fully covered in the following article.
