Help restore backed up files

I had problems with Windows Vista, so I used the Center backup and restore to back up all my files before performing a system restore. I then used the system restore to restore the PC to its original configuration. Of course, to restore the system also eresed all data files, which I expected. So far everything worked as expected. When I went to restore the files, restore Windows told me that the backup files were not valid and suggested I check the hardware configuration. As far as I know, nothing has changed in the hardware configuration. Any ideas I could try next? The main thing lost was family photos.

Thanks in advance for any help.

  • Help restore the temporary files

I just restored my Dell Dimension 4700 to factory settings, but before I did, I used the file and Transfer Wizard to transfer all my files on an external hard drive up, but I don't know how to restore them now that I am up and running again.  They seem to be in Temp folders.  Any help ASAP would be certainly appreciated.

External hard drive LaCie and Genie Backup Software that comes with it is what the Temp files are on (at least this is what I think it is).  The files settings and Transfer Wizard helped me transfer my files before I restored my system to factory settings, but I do not see how to restore now.  Help

    Brooklyn Babe

    Babe from Brooklyn,
All you need to do is to run the transfer Assistant again, and when it starts it will ask if it's the new pc or old.  Say that it's new and then he will be asked where the files are located and you direct them to the reader.  NOW, I did this on a pc once and had a little problem with the service pack level.  The SP should be the same as on the old machine.  for example, I saved on SP2, and I tried to restore the SP3 and it wouldn't work.  I had to remove the SP3 and then restore. Typing of my new Windows 7 64 bit and love it! Soli Deo Gloria!

    Hi handymanken,

    1. what operating system do you use?
    2. you have made no changes to the computer before the broadcast took place?

    Method 1
If you have any security software installed on the computer it would take more time for the backup center to back up files. Try to disable security software and try to make a backup and verify.

If it works fine afterwards, enable the security software.

Follow the link for more information

    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows7/disable-antivirus-software
    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows-Vista/disable-antivirus-software

Note: Antivirus software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you should not disable your antivirus software. If you need to disable temporarily to install other software, you must reactivate as soon as you are finished. If you are connected to the Internet or a network, while your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.

    Method 2
Run the check disk for bad sectors.

    Check a drive for errors
    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows7/check-a-drive-for-errors
    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows-Vista/check-a-drive-for-errors
    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/315265
Note: Running chkdsk on the drive if bad sectors are found on the disk hard when chkdsk attempts to repair this area if all available on which data can be lost.

  • How can I restore my backup files on an external hard drive using Windows XP SP3?

I back up my files to an external hard drive using windows XP sp2. My pc crashed and re installed with Windows XP sp3. Now I can't find the backup on the system tools utility. How can I restore my backup files. Help, please.

    Hi PML.

Yes, I used the built in «Back to the top of the tool» Unfortunately I don't have the CD. My Netbook is a HP mini computer that comes with Windows XP home. Thank you for your help and I hope to hear from you again.

How do you reinstall Windows?  If you have used the HP Recovery system to recover from a hidden partition, backup should have been reinstalled.

I suggest you call HP support.

  • Restore Windows XP files saved via Windows Easy Transfer on the same computer

After downloading and using Easy Transfer to back up files on an external hard drive (which is where they are now) for the purpose of upgrading Windows XP to Windows 7, I have now decided not to continue because the purchase of a new computer with Windows 7 already loaded is a purchase that I'll soon make and so I'd be disadvantaged I now realize given the short waiting period if I pass with a Windows 7 buy some now.
My question is: I am now able to reverse the procedure and re - install these files which are located on Easy Transfer in the external hard drive?

    Hi, Sit_hyd_skayitha,

No, this is a oneway - transfer

He was set to back up all the files (documents, music, photos, etc.), but I restored my latest backup of the system and it seems to have restored some valuable files that I thought it was supposed to be back up.

Somewhat confusingly, I have a folder containing many shortcuts to some of the files that are apparently not here, but can open the destination via the shortcut folder although it don't or unable to display the folder in Windows Explorer.

Any help to work out what is going on would be greatly appreciated!
    Matt.

Display the hidden files and folders. If no go, sfc scan. They should bail out you.

I want to back up files on my hard drive of diving, how do you do that?

You can use a hard drive, but it is not the drive on which the system or the boot is running.  If you have a second drive in your system that contains system information or startup, you can use this disk for backups.  The wizard backs up (Start / Control Panel / backup and restore) will guide you through the process and provide you with the options you can choose to send the information - which should include this disc hard if it meets the requirements more fully covered in the following article.

Here's a FAQ on the backup and restore that can be useful to some of your questions: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Back-up-and-restore-frequently-asked-questions.

Here is an article that describes the process of backup and restore in Vista: http://netsecurity.about.com/od/secureyourwindowspc/ss/vistabackup.htm.

    I hope this helps.
