HIT KIT necessary verification

Hello

I just wanted to check that I need in fact the HIT Kit do with a PS6000 MPIO.  Currently without the HIT Kit tools, I see 1-way via my iSCSI Initiator on my Server 2008 R2.  The target that I discovered is the IP of the group.  My understanding of how this works, the IP group is an IP virtual, with the other IPS on Eth 0-3, less than.  I am unique path to the IP of the group now without the tools, but after I installed the tools... I'll see what?  All of the IP addresses behind the group IP address?  Or even the tools will manage multiple paths (2 physical network adapters on the server goes to the network iSCSI with eth CM cables connected as well).

This is the document that I work out now http://en.community.dell.com/dell-groups/dtcmedia/m/mediagallery/20094620/download.aspx

Thank you.

You're right in that to have the multiple paths on the PS6000 you will need to install the HIT Kit. Version 4.5 is the latest, and that's the one we recommend that you install. If you log in to the support site and go to the download section for the HIT Kit and scroll to the bottom, there is a section of the documentation for the HIT Kit and you will see the installation and user guide that you can download. It guides you through the entire process on what you need to do to get it installed and configured. Please take a look at this document and not hesitate to let me know if you have any other questions.

  • VM Exchange or SQL with instant HIT Kit and VSM

    Hello

I wonder if someone could explain a bit more on integration of VSM and HIT kit without scenario ISCSI based comments like below...

Exchange and SQL servers are run under vm on Vcenter/Vsphere 5.5 environment, and there is no comments ISCSI connection which means that all disks are vmdk.

So, based on this scenario, is it possible to use the HIT kit to restore data (granular level) even if the snapshot has been taken by VSM data store option?

    Thanks in advance...

    Hello

No, you cannot use HIT / ME in this case.   The HIT kit requires the MS ISCSI initiator to work properly. For creation and restoration of snapshots.

VSM is against the whole VMFS data store.  First VCS invites you to create snapshots, the VMware VMDK VSM will require instant volume EQL.

VSM don't offer currently not at the file level restore.  However, you can do it manually.

Bring the EQL data store snapshot online.

Connect to a node ESXi and add this snapshot of the data store to that node.

(With storage add, after a new analysis of the ESXi iSCSI initiator)

It renames the snapshot of the data store for: "snapshot - XXXXXX -

You can do a few things here.  Copy the original entire virtual disk of the snapshot to the data store. Or more generally to add the file VMDK from the snapshot on another virtual computer as another drive.

When you start the virtual computer, it will appear as a new drive letter.  Then, you can copy individual files of this copy.

An important thing to note.  When you use a snapshot, you will use instant reserve.  So make sure if you attach not already 100% instant reserve that increase you it as much as possible.  If you consume the reserve of the snapshot, you work with is removed.  According to which EQL FW version, you can borrow from the free space.  This is especially true if you replace a VMDK set.   That will use up to the reserve very quickly...

When you are finished with the EQL snapshot, make sure first that no VMs still use it.  Then put the instant EQL offline in EQL GUI.  And then do a rescan the iSCSI initiator in ESXi GUI.  This will cleanly remove the volume from the node ESXi.  Otherwise, he might try constantly to reconnect to the EQL snapshot, generating errors repeated in the EQL GUI and alerts if you have set up.

  • Windows Server 2012 R2 HIT Kit

Anyone know when will release a version of the TUBE kit that is compatible with Windows Server R2 2012?

    RichardSkinner,

Being how R2 is so new, I have heard no official word on a date when he will be released. I'm sure it's on the roadmap but genius has to do all the tests and development in order to ensure that everything works as it should. I would recommend to just keep checking back from time to time and if I hear anything I'll let you know.

With the imminent release of Server R2 2012, when can we expect a continued SUCCESS / ME?

There are two hours... I must have missed it!

Sorry, but I don't have exact date yet.  From the information I have that is planned for Q4, so some time between now and January.

You can give your sales representative a call, they can have more information on when it will be released.

  • IQN concurrent connections

I have a few non cluster Windows terminal server virtual machines running in vmware on a group EQ (ps6000 and ps6210xs). Virtual machines have connections iscsi volumes data on the equalizer. I'm restricting access to volumes by IQN of the terminal server that hosts, so I leave the "allow simultaneous connections from initiators with different IQN" unchecked for these volumes.

I started implementing MPIO with HIT / ME a few weeks ago and today I noticed that some of these volumes of data have now the checkbox "allow simultaneous" checked. Is this something that happened during the MPIO configuration? Is it necessary, even if it's still only one IQN (multiple NICs) name?

    Hello

That doesn't seem right.   However, you run the Setup Wizard remove and exclude the subnets of iSCSI SAN?

You join an AD domain or change the host name after you have configured the iSCSI?  Even as a test, then add volumes later?

When you connect to a volume, WIndows creates a static entry for the connection using the IQN name at the time.  If you later join a domain or change the host name, this static entry is not updated.  There the old hostname.   The HIT kit has the ability to create a new ACL on the fly if needed.  Either you put that one IP address, it detects the other one creates an account CHAP to another IP on the fly.

What version of firmware EQL and HIT / ME software?

  • political choice RAID

    Hello

AM to Setup a PS4210x (24 x 600 GB 10 k) and I was wondering what type of raid to pick up. Its a single table for a small company (office staff 70). They use file, Exchange, RDS via VMWare servers. Standard of things really.

It takes about 5 TB so I could go RAID 10, but that doesn't leave much room for the expansion/snapshots etc. They don't really have the extra IOPS / s.

I thought RAID 50, but a colleague told me that was not recommended these days. Could I see that this is not recommended for the 7.2 k drives but we don't use them, I guess it will be ok?

I wasn't sure about RAID 6 due to the eventual reconstruction of time because it is the only painting in the society. I hear sometimes rebuilding RAID 6 can be bad.

Being the interest to hear what people think.

    Huw-

    Hello Fabrizio,

Good thing about Dell PS storage is then you can go from R10 to R50/6 without losing data.  It will be extended to a larger capacity RAID level.  You can simply can do the opposite.

Exchange and VMware tend to be smaller, IO, but with more random.  Which is best served by R10.  What is "RDS"?

Caution on the use of R6 w / 7.2 K drives is they take longer to rebuild, because they are slower and get big these days.  10K / 15K disks are so much faster and less their rebuild times are much better.   Also the rebuild time is also depending on the load.   More load longer equal reconstructions.

I suggest you start by R10.  Install SANHQ and follow the model of I/O.   Also use thin volumes put into service on the side EQL.  VMware VMFS, Windows 2K 8 + (w/HIT/KIT) Windows 2 K 12 + all UNMAP support.   Also known as the recover space.   With VMFS, this is a manual process to the VMware CLI.

For Windows, if you use the MS iSCSI initiator to connect to the volume (even on a virtual machine in VMware) you can install the HIT / ME software.  Available on the EQLSUPPORT. DELL.COM site.  This improved offer MPIO, integration with SQL, Exchange, and SharePoint.   Provide consistent snapshots and adding UNMAP support for Windows 2 K 8.  Again, it is native in W2K12 +.

RAID50 vs R6.  Once you get some data in SANHQ there is an appraiser of RAID. You can get an overview of the different RAID levels using existing data.  Gives you an idea on the impact of possible performance.

R50 is slightly faster than the R6, however the 4210 is the current gen controller and it's pretty fast. Combined with 10K disk rebuild times should not really be very different.  The software also has detection of impending failures. If it is triggered it will reflect the failed drive first, instead of forcing a rebuild.

The only con against R50, is that it is two aggregated R5 RAIDsets.  So if there is a failure during a rebuild the RAIDset fails, and disconnect all volumes.   R6 is the most secure RAID level by far, but it comes at a cost of performance on the Scriptures.  However, the readings are better on R50/R6 compared to R10.

There is a technical report that has more information on the RAID policy choice.

    It is available here:

    en.Community.Dell.com/.../New-EqualLogic-RAID-Tech-Report-Considerations-and-Best-Practices-Released

There is a guide of best practices for VMware + EQL storage.  It is very important to set up correctly the first time.  Fix then requires more time because it requires restarting and the mode of maint.

    It is available here:

    en.Community.Dell.com/.../20434601

Something that gets missed when formatting your NTFS volumes (or vmdk), do not accept the default allocation size.  It says 'auto '.  Change that to 64K.  You can do that on drives C:, but all data drives must be formatted like this.  This aligned I/O bandwidth of 64K used on the Dell PS Series SAN.  Especially when executing R50/R6 that can improve the efficiency of all entries.  He is known as a 'band full writing' in terms RAID.  It takes a minimum of operations to such writing.  Stripe partial Scriptures require more operations.  Works fine as well for the R10.

    I hope this helps.

  • Remove PS snapshots automatically - how?

    Hi, I have a three node Hyper-V 2012 cluster connected to a SAN, iSCSI, a PS6210XV network.

I am currently back up virtual machines using Microsoft DPM 2012, using EQL hw provider.

Backups are running fine and fast, but whenever the DPM runs a backup, the PS generates a snapshot of SAN of the volume that contains the vm. When the backup finishes, however, the snapshot is not deleted, but stay on the line until someone deletes it.

How can I have my snapshots automatically deleted after a backup operation?

I don't want to use the Hyper-V software provider to make my backups.

    Thanks :).

You have installed the latest HIT kit, version 4.7?    Looks like you are running fw v7.x EQL?   A change in behavior of the snapshot was introduced at the request of the customer.  If a snapshot is online, do not remove it w/o first put it in offline mode.  V4.7 HIT a code to make it when a delete VSS snapshot is requested.

  • The Group PS6100XS and Hyper-V Server 2012: migration of storage between LUNS corrupts VM

Well, I'm puzzled! Summer hit my head against this whole week. Basically, ranging from a virtual machine clustered LUN on the Bay EqualLogic corrupts the virtual machine. Here is my configuration:

    1. SAN 1: PS6100XS 6.0.1 firmware, 2 LUNS configured as CSV, 1 as a quorum disk
    2. SAN 2: FreeNAS 8.3.0, 2 LUN (ZFS-formatted, for what it's worth)
    3. Server 1: Dell R310 running Windows Server 2012 with Hyper-V installed feature. 4 network cards: 2 made team for traffic LAN, 2 for iSCSI with HIT KIT 4.5 configured for MPIO.
    4. Server 2: Old box SuperMicro running Windows Server 2012 with Hyper-V feature installed. 2 network cards: 1 for LAN traffic, 1 for iSCSI with HIT KIT 4.5 installed
    5. Created and all cluster validation tests passed
    Here's what works:
    1. Ranging from a virtual machine of the LUN if there is no activity on the VHDX
    2. Move a VM all LUN the EqualLogic to any number of unit logic FreeNAS or vice versa
    3. Move a VM between LUNS on the FreeNAS
    4. Move a VM between LUNS on the EqualLogic BEFORE I created the cluster (just using Hyper-V Manager, not the Failover Cluster Manager)
This is what kills the VM whenever:
    1. Create a virtual machine through the Failover Cluster Manager - is not matter which node owns the storage or the VM - tried all combinations
    2. Take an active virtual machine, power and move a LUN EqualLogic to another EqualLogic LUN. The move signals the success, but the VM blue screen at the end of the move will and will no longer be able to start. It's basically fried.
BTW, I tried also to disable one of the iSCSI NIC on the R310 - what does not help either. Any ideas? I have a case goes with the support of Dell EqualLogic, but so far they have been puzzled. Anyone got something like this works yet?

OK, after Dell tried about 5 different times to tell me that my setup was not supported (actually claimed that EPA software was not supported!) I finally got someone who gave me workaround: disabling ODX by changing the key "reg" HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\FileSystem\FilterSupportedFeaturesMode from 0 to 1. This "fix", but it also takes one of the most interesting features of the 2012 Server + EqualLogic: ODX! With active ODX, I can move 20 GB in< 1="" sec.="" with="" it="" disabled,="" it="" takes="" around="" 2="" minutes,="" depending="" on="" network="">

  • Replication question

I have a 300 GB volume which currently holds 20 GB of files of database MSSQL (MDF, NDF, LDF)

This volume has never been reproduced in the past.  Just now, when I created this volume to replicate to an Equallogic off-site, "pending data transfer" immediately jumped to more than 71 GB.

Why would it, as this volume has never been implemented for replication in the past so there shouldn't be any incremental change to synchronize, and the volume contains only 20 GB of total data?

    TIA!

No, the table is a block level device, when a file is deleted by default that the info is not given in the table so that it can cancel the allocation of the blocks.  There is a new standard called UNMAP that will do just that.  But he had been in place from the beginning to UNMAP the blocks.

Windows Server 2012 and W2K8R2 with HIT kit 4.5 will do it.   Or file system EXT4 linux also supports SCSI UNMAP.

However, currently UNMAP is NOT supported with replicated volumes.

  • To connect to a host to EQL groups in separate without

Is there a pick up and right way to do it?

    The configuration looks like this:

-Group 1 in subnet a (1 GB SAN, older)

-Group 2 in subnet B (10 GB SAN), most recent

-Host is connected to all subnets through different cards is a Windows Server, has HIT Kit and MPIO work group has

-Subnet A and B are physically and logically separate, no traffic can flow directly from one to the other

I would use the host to be able to access and transfer data on and between the two groups (application using based on the host mirrored, etc.).

HIT / only supports ME a MPIO for each host institution, is obviously the first thing to be not 'ok', I would have had to include two subnets A and B.

Should what disasters I expect if I decide to do it anyway? This will never be a supported scenario (and the HIT / have supported me for more than one configuration of MPIO, one set per group f.ex.)?

    Hello

The only downside, including the two subnets in the MPIO HIT, is that it will periodically attempt to connect to a cluster with network cards on the other subnet.   The connectivity check fails and just use NIC which can reach the appropriate group.

  • EqualLogic tools - what does what?

Nobody knows what the HIT KIT's or software SANHQ not?

    -Allthebest1976

The HIT (Host Integration Toolkit) Kit is a set of tools that provides, among other things, snapshots to the current demand for EqualLogic.  It includes their own VSS writer of so that if you take a snapshot of a LUN EqualLogic connected to a server, it will first use this driver to stop all the entries to apply instant consistent.

This feature is only available if you use the inside the VM iSCSI initiator to connect directly to LUNS on the EqualLogic Bay.  If you are using VMDK files for virtual machines then the HIT Kit will have little value, but if you use directly attached LUN for things like Microsoft Exchange, then, it is useful.  See also their Auto Snapshot Manager for VMware (http://www.equallogic.com/partnerships/default.aspx?id=6523) and Microsoft (http://www.equallogic.com/partnerships/default.aspx?id=6467) products.

It also provides additional value as MPIO improved but that there are still invited initiated iSCSI connections and will complicate somehow your configuration (more info about MPIO on a virtual machine when you use EqualLogic, look here: http://communities.vmware.com/thread/259695?start=30&tstart=0)

As others have said, SanHQ is a great tool to monitor the performance of your EqualLogic Bay.  Dell has done a really nice job with this software because it is clean and gives really useful information (as the latency of the IOPS / s and storage).

    Hope that answers your question.

    Hi all
Hello everyone, I have a multi-dossier block in a form where one of the values of elements is of LOV.user can select the value of LOV.

If once the user selects the value of LOV and moves to the next of the multi-file record, and selects the value of LOV again, I shouldn't allow users to select the previous value of the user in order to avoid duplication of records.

and important remark is that I should get there before you save it in the database because once registered in the database I can compare the values and hide the previous value.

  • HIT the integration of the Kit.

    Hello

We have recently installed the latest kit (appearing as 4.0.9000) HIT on a couple of R710s that is running server 2012.

Does anyone know why you have to connect the VSS for the "Dell EqualLogic Storage Manager" volume be 'happy '? Of course, I understand the snapshots require VSS volume, but isn't it risky to have this VSS part mounted on the host server?

We have set them read-only, but I'd rather not have their accissible at all if possible (given that there is a system volume.

I would be grateful for answers to this problem.

    Thank you

    Rhidian

There is no risk of the connected control vss volume.  VSS-Cointrol is a gateway to pass info to / from the table.  It's not a volume of 'system '.  You cannot harm him, i.e. If you have tried to format it would fail.
