How to install linux as a guest operating system from a usb flash drive

I need to install Ubuntu on MacBook Air exhaust OSX Lion with a CD player. The only instructions I can find are for installation on CD. Can someone point me to a doc that explains how to install starting from a flash usb dirive or tell me how it's done with VM Fusion 4.0?

FWIW, the box is I7 processor clocked at 1.8 GHz with 4 GB of RAM and 256 GB.

Thank you

Download the linux distribution to install
the download will come in iso file

assign to your virtual machine instead of a CD

    Hello

    I have a Toshiba Satellite U400-10j.

I have Ubuntu on my USB flash drive, now I want to boot from it.

I can't find the option in the BIOS to boot from the Usb flash drive.

Second, I noticed that the phone also has an internal memory card reader.
I could load Ubuntu top then to start the memory stick as well?

Your help will be very appreciated.
    Thank you.

I think that it s not able to boot from a USB key on this laptop.
The best way is to use a CD. There, you can start on this notebook and all other laptops.
In the Internet there are many versions of CD of Ubuntu and other Linux systems.

And as said Feliks, it s not able to boot from an SD card because it is not in the BIOS.

Guest operating system is Oracle Enterprise Linux 4 - it has a static address 192.168.192.72. Both machines have DNS server, and default gateway.

The client is running Oracle 10 g, oracle emctl provides db console on port 1158 and listener SQL expects the requests on port 1521

windows back can ping 192.168.192.72 - and linux can ping 192.168.192.2. Windows: back ftp can connect to linux server on the standard port 21 ftp and windows IE can see properly http://192.168.192.72/ -> default page for linux apache (on the standard port 80)

  • How to recover a W7 OS on the new HARD disk USB flash drive?

I have my Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop friends. HARD drive have a lot of bad sectors, but it was fun to do:

    • a copy of the image of recovery dell USB flash drive via Dell Backup and Recovery Application
    • a copy of the very important files
    • and a copy of the 2 partitions to each image using Acronis True Image application file:
    1. FAT16 Pri 39, 19 MB FS: FAT16 Partition: 0xde (EISA configuration)
    2. Pri, Act 14.65 GB NTFS RECOVERY

RECOVERY partition have the same content, such as a usb flash drive with I used to do a recovery Dell image.

If she buys a new drive HARD this what should I do/use to recover Windows 7 from a USB?

PS. I have nothing to lose and I try to play with the hard drive has failed.
First of all I do partition of LBA 0 to 80 GB first where bad sectors and hide this partition.
Then I do these partitions 2 "dell" and the rest for system files.
Then I recover these partitions of 2 "dell" using Acronis True Image.
Then I use a usb flash drive to recover Windows 7, it retrieves for maybe 10 seconds and he said that, please restart.
When it shows BOOTMGR is missing, press ctrl + alt + delete and now I see only 2 partitions labeled OS ~ 298 GB and RECOVERY ~ 2 GB.

    The problem is resolved.

The best solution is to use ImageX 2.0 to extract file Factory.wim partition RECOVERY or USB flash drive. Just search on google. New installation of operating system is also an option - I know about it. Fortunately, this Dell factory contains no useless software.

    Thanks for all the help!

  • How to boot from simulated USB (flash drive) mass storage device?

I do some development work on the anaconda, the Installer used by Red Hat Enterprise Linux and reconstructions based off of him.  I'm testing support of USB flash drive facilities and would rather test my changes using image files from a USB drive physical - a bit like editing an .iso image to a CD instead of using a physical CD of closure.

I found a reference to the Framework of Linux-USB Gadget API, which looked exactly like what I was looking for.  After the reconstruction of the almond, I was able to run:

    • modprobe dummy_hcd
    • modprobe g_file_storage file = CentOS - 6.2 - i386 - netinstall.iso

After that, the office immediately get the image as if I had actually plugged a USB stick with the same content.

I am also able to connect this virtual USB device to a virtual machine, but when I start the virtual machine, it has no option to boot from the virtual USB device.

    Any ideas?

VMware Workstation does not directly support boot from USB but you can use a third-party utility called Plop Boot Manager to boot a bootable USB disk and you may be.

  • How to increase disk space without guest operating system reinstallation

    Hello

I take advantage of VMWARE with linux host and vista 64 comments, but I encountered a problem, running out of disk space.

During the installation of VISTA, I chose 25 GB of disk space, as recommneded by IG of installation).

    Now I need more space.

According to the virtual disk manager, I did

    VMware-vdiskmanager mydisk.vmdk 40 GB - x

increase to 40 GB. It seemed to work, as I received a message,

    "Disk expansion completed successfully."

Now "The VM setting" windows says HD 40 GB. But internally under VISTA, disk space is always 25 GB. In fact, the size of disk file (view on the side of linux) is only 22 GB. No idea how to increase disk space. He must start from the installation, but it's a little painful.

    Thank you.

If the guest is Vista or Windows 2008, then you should be able to extend the partition while the system is running.

Take a look at this article: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial133.html

Windows NT/2000/XP/2003 won't let you do that, while the disk is online.  Vista and Windows 2008 changed things.

For versions of Windows Vista/2008, look for the Dell ExtPart.exe utility, as it will do the job for you.

    See you soon,.

  • Error on installing XP as a guest operating system

I'll put up my first virtual machine and can't.  I installed Workstation 6.5.1 on windows XP Pro SP3.  Then, I created my first VM and tried to install XP Pro SP3.  When the Assistant asked the guest OS CD, I put my original CD in the CD drive, and then, when he tried to install from that drive, I got this error: CDBOOT: cannot boot from CD - Code: 4.

So I then created an ISO CD image and placed it on the HD and then host computers instead of pointing the wizard on the CD player, I pointed to the ISO file.  But I got the same exact error message.  If something is wrong with my computer or my approach to this virtual machine.

Of course, I would appreciate the help.

Host computer is Dell Optiplex with 3 GB of RAM and IDE drive 500 GB HD and IDE DVD-R.

    Thank you!

I was hoping to avoid the problem of CD Boot by transforming the CD ISO and pointing the wizard in the ISO file.  But that doesn't seem to work.  How can I skip the question bootable CD?

An ISO standard is simply a picture of a CD (or DVD)... so if the drive is not bootable, the image will not be!

Find a bootable installation disk, or use the floppy boot (or diskettes).

  • Portege R600 - 13 X - how to reinstall the operating system on the new HARD drive?

    Hello

I inherited a Portege R600 - 13 X of my colleague, who hit and killed the hard drive. I installed a new hard drive, but you don't have operating system installation diskettes as he said that the computer has not come with any. To make things even more difficult, I believe that the optical drive may not work. My old R500 had a dead optical drive and after I replaced it (he has not yet worked) I was told it is perhaps something to do with the ribbon cable, which piggy back off the coast of the SD card reader, then to the motherboard.

Anyway, is it possible for me to install Win 7 Professional (I have the original windows key) from a USB flash drive? Or y at - it a specific OS recovery/reinstallation disk that I can download Toshiba?

Any advice would be very welcome
    Thank you
    NJ

I have a Portege R600, and he has been a formidable workaholic, although now showing its age with newer software.

I think these machines came with pre-installed Vista and your friend must have created a set of recovery discs when they got off the machine.

Toshiba did release a drive to upgrade when Windows 7 is released which was available to the buyer within the free upgrade period you. You may be able to find a disk, but you will need the Win7 license to go with it.

If not, your only option is likely to be to buy a disk and license. Of course, you can find the specific Toshiba drivers are missing. If you think about it, it's extremely unlikely that you will be able to locate what is essentially a free Windows 7 download install disc.

Without an optical drive, you need to use an external USB drive and the BIOS to boot from that first force.

I hope that you have succeeded.

  • NB100 - How can I reinstall OS from USB flash drive

My laptop TOSHIBA NB 100 has no CD-DVD player.
Operating system is Windows XP Home SP2.

    Operating system won't start.

Laptop start not at all so I can't run any kind of test when I turn it on.

The thank you screen come on it says launch safe mode, the networking of safe mode, safe mode comand prompt or start windows normally. But no matter who I chose, that it does not start it only goes to Windows and looks like its starts but then shows the blue Windows screen & stays there.

So I want to reload Windows from my USB flash drive.
The BIOS boot sequence is the USB HDD - FDD - FD - CD memory.

What are the steps for loading Windows USB flash drive?

If that does not work then I want to connect another laptop with Windows CD in the CD - DVD drive laptop.
Will this work? The laptop will use the Windows CD in the drive of the laptop to load the operating system?
    How to make this connection?

    Hello

You usually have an external USB CD/DVD drive to boot from the Windows XP disc or the Toshiba recovery disc.

But there is a method that allows you to install Win XP using the 2 GB USB key.
This is possible because the NB100 BIOS supports booting from USB key.

    Pease check this Web page:

+ Installation of Windows XP using a USB Flash Drive.

    Hope it could be useful.
