  I'm sorry to say this, but the 24-character error codes indicates a drive failure, which means that the drive is defective and must be replaced.

  You always have access to the data stored on the disk? If you do, then save as much information as possible and look for a replacement drive.   I have a HP Pavilion laptop g6-2218nr that will not start.  When you run the marketing diagnostic test and the hard drive diagnostic test, both tests showed the hard drive DST short FAILED.

  The error code indicates that the hard drive is faulty and will need to be replaced - a brief guide to do it yourself is detailed below.

  Your laptop is considered as coming with a 320 GB hard drive, but you can install just as easily a 500 GB or 750 GB HARD drive if you want a little more space - readers at the following links are examples that would be perfect for your laptop.

  Once this is done, simply use your recovery DVD to reinstall the operating system on the new drive - this is described in the document of HP here.

  Hello David.

  Of course you can upgrade the HARD drive to a larger drive, but it is not easy to do on this model.

  The keyboard must be removed to access the screws underneath. Screws at the bottom should be deleted, then you can remove the top cover. An audio plate must also be removed before you can remove the HARD drive.

I guess that means that the hard drive has failed once again and so I have no doubt about how to solve this problem, but I write this query to ask: why?   Boot from the CD.

  Yes, the hard drive must be replaced. If you are still in warranty HP will send a replacement. If it is not in warranty, you can buy a SATA notebook hard drive retail. Don't forget to get one with a capacity at least as large as the original 750Go hdd to use HP recovery discs to reinstall your operating system and software. It may be more grand, but of no small ability.

  So what happened was first fine could start my computer, but it would "lock" occasionally.   Stop using the laptop. Replace the hard drive with a new one. Get a SATA to usb adapter to connect the old drive (which you will eliminate) to another computer to try to save the data. There is a good chance of data is still recoverable this way.

  Each time the short hard drive DST test fails with 24 alphanumeric characters "GDSDBX-TLR7RJ-9XL03F-604J03" which indicates that the hard drive has failed and which needs to be replaced to solve the problem

  This problem could be due to an Application or a driver conflict, virus issues, corruptions of files due to incompatible applications, incorrect judgments, update failures due to conflicts, mounted sudden power so portable, sudden falls etc...

  HP will offer a replacement HDD if the laptop warranty is Active, otherwise you can buy a SATA hard drive in a nearby retail store

  Please make sure that you get at least equal as long as the original one in order to use recovery disks. If you need you can buy a bigger, but not smaller hard drive capacity. For example, if you have a 500 GB hard drive you can improve it to 750 GB hard drive, but not 320 GB hard drive

  Please try the troubleshooting below indicated once the steps:

  Step 03. Plug the AC power adapter / (leave the battery for now)

  Step 04. Press the power button and check if the unit is operating normally

  If the steps listed above is not enough, then you can try reinstalling the hard disk on your laptop

  If the problem persists again please Contact HP if your HP laptop is under warranty, HP could replace the hard drive and provide recovery media to restore the operating system to factory after the replacement (if you have not yet created recovery disks/USB support)

  Note: Back up all personal data on an external drive if possible. Otherwise, you can connect the HDD defective via SATA USB adapter with another PC or a PC even after replacing the HARD drive & put in place of the operating system and try to copy / retrieve files.   I experienced detention and the system freezes on my Compaq CQ2909EO desktop. Guarantee was completed two weeks ago, and unsurprisingly the problems started almost immediately after that. Quite a few errors have been resolved, so I installed the drive in my Compaq and method to rearm the system settings and reinstall Win 8. I was able to do the reinstall without problem, but when running Windows updates the system froze again. It crashes every time, the first thing that can happen is the HARD drive light on the front turns off. I knew what to look for in the event log and found half a dozen events like this:
