• Video card for first Pro CS5

  I'm currently has the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 285, Win7, 6 GB RAM and periodically get the crash program and the following error when you work with projects: driver problem detected OpenGL NVIDIA with the display driver.

  I want to upgrade to a better video card and would like a professional recommendation. I want to stay in the range of $400-$500. Most of the recommendations that I looked on the forum seem obsolete compared to products currently listed on the NVIDIA site. Thank you.

  What Bill meant that with only 6 GB of RAM (which is IMHO not enough RAM to run Premiere Pro CS5 + to the satisfaction of most of the people), the high-end cards would have been a total waste of money: performance of the RAM and the large pagefile expansion will severely limit any provision of performance for the high-end cards to the point where these cards would not be a faster than cards much cheaper. In other words, there is a mounting system as fast as its weakest link (in this case, the low amount of RAM and the generally slow hard disks that are used to Exchange files). Increase in the total amount of RAM 12 GB (or better yet, 24GO) would significantly reduce the need for such a huge, slow the pagefile access. Even the fastest SSD can't stay with the RAM in terms of throughput and latency for access.

  And which causes this slow performance of your system is Windows increases generally the file exchange - and with only 6 GB of RAM and a relatively heavy such as Premiere Pro resources application, it would requre a rather huge swap file. But if you do not use a swap file, especially with a low amount of RAM installed, the system will crash during a session of editing/rendering/encoding with "out of memory" errors.

  I don't think that there is any best card.

  But I also have many of these same cards, one in my editing system in my personal system.  960 really works better.

  You have several choices, depending on things like budget, and if you need/expect commercial support for the card.  The least expensive and most effective option would be to go get MacVidCards on EBay.  Just look for this exact word on EBay and hunt around for its EBay page.  Dave takes on PC nVidia cards and makes them compatible with Mac Pro EFI, so that they can start successfully, view the grey Apple screen and run at full speed.  nVidia will not support that, nor will Apple and retailer of the card or the will.  But, you will have access to cards that have historically been PC only.

  On the other end of the spectrum of: grand prize and less performance, you have nVidia Mac-specific maps.  Some of them are listed here.  I would not recommend any of them, but you will get the support of the end user of any manufacturer buy you from.

  You need a Mac Pro 3.1 or higher.  The last crop of Mac towers are in 5.1

  Card for the Mac would be a Quadro FX4800 or you can wait for a new Quadro based Fermi card for MAc which must be in a little while (don't know exactly, but before the end of the year).

  I can't afford a lot so I went for a Gigabyte Nvidia 730 2 DDR3.  I tried two different cards, but still not not start hp blue screen boot, so back thinking them they were defective. However, research in the forums, said some HP computers may not be able to upgrade graphics cards many past spec on board can anyone help and tell me what I could run?   Today, another factor when choosing a video card is the age / the version of BIOS in your PC vs model of the video card.

  Is no longer a simple comparison of consumption of current power supply and PCI Express version.

  I am inclined to believe that I could take advantage of GPU acceleration when editing as my PC is a little under spec. I have a card but when I switch to the GPU acceleration, it works but whenever I stop moving / play / rub on the timeline the preview screen becomes black.

  I don't know who might be the best card to get for my reqs. I don't think I put great demands on the software, but it still hurt. Most of my editing is the lengthy interviews 3-10 min. 2 camera multi-camera editing. I still need to change the curves of RGB, corrector of three way color, transitions and sometimes careful noise reduction. One of these leaves of evil from my PC. All the usual titles, music & voice etc. but nothing too heavy like movies or the insertion of a lot of video lines.

  I'm also a little casual work in After effects too.

  PC spec is:

  Intel Xeon CPU 1.86GHz (2 processors)

  12 GB of RAM, which I'll update to 16 GB

  64-bit op system

  Windows 7

  Radeon HD 5450 graphics card.

  1.   2. If my assumption on your exact model of the CPU is just a new processor i7 with 4 cores is better than your two Xeons 4 strands because they have no hyperthreading.
