HP Deskjet 842C printer will print on limited user on local Windows XP Professional SP3

Hello, I have reinstalled my HP Deskjet 842C printer on my Windows XP Pro SP3 machine.  I am unable to print on any user account. It allows to print network computers when a user account when they are on the user account.  Only, it will not print user of the local computer account.  I have a canon also connected to the computer and it will print on the user account.  If I go from the user account to an administrator account, it prints.  I added users, authenticated users, and the names of my accounts to the tab titles and gave them all the permissions.  She still does not print.  In printers and faxes, the icon indicates the printer is "ready", either in the user or administrator.  What happens here? He used to work.

Update: as an experiment I've reinstalled the drivers for an old Win XP laptop and was able to print from the user account on this.   When I try to add the printer in the user account the ability to add a local printer is dimmed however the possibility of adding a network printer is clickable.

I found the solution to it.

Bidirectional support should be tell-activated (ie. not checked) in the ports tab.  In an administrator account goto Start > printers and faxes > right click on your printer > properties (properties of the printer in Win7) > uncheck bidirectional support.

I hope this will be useful to anyone who can search for it in the future

This is caused by the failure of one of your cartridges.  Remove the black print cartridge and print a test page.  The printer prints at a normal speed?  Is therefore the black cartridge was the issue and needs to be replaced.  If it isn't then, put the black back cartridge in and remove the color cartridge and the test page printed.  If the printer now prints speed the color cartridge is responsible and must be replaced.

Jason, thank you for your help and your time.  The problem is resolved.  The prompt for more information brought me back on the many steps and methods.  Main problem proved to be a misalignment of the cartridges.  Corrected by a number of iterations of the alignment process.  Return the printer to its owner in several weeks and hope it works satisfactorily with her pimp.  He is 89 and blind if, of course, he relies on his wife who is not too computer savvy.

  • Stuck transport - DeskJet 842C

The cartridges are stuck on the right side of the cart and will not spend. When I turn on the printer it makes a grinding noise and I can see the cartridges trying to get around, but they do not. I have cleaned the printer and made sure there is no paper jam anywhere, but it still does not work.

    Hello sds.

    I suggest you try this:

Turn off the printer, open the lid and turn on the printer. As the transport attempts to move (producing grinding) unplug the power cord from the printer. Now try to move the carriage by hand and if you can, move all the way to the left, and then again in the middle of the printer. Turn on the printer again and hopefull this will solve the problem.

The Deskjet 842c printer is old enough and I don't have one on site to check myself, but the first or the second of these two documents describe another step to try to correct the stall of transport (look inside the printer, on the far left and compare your printer for images in documents):

  • PRI all-in-one HP Deskjet 3520: Deskjet 3520 printer all-in-one copy, but will scan and print computer

This printer has always worked well... used only occasionally. The cartridges are fine.  Everything prints out fine computer, it scans very well, but does not copy.  Looks like it's copy, but shot out a blank page.

Welcome to the HP community @273frustrated,.

I understand that your 3520 Deskjet is no copy making more correctly however, you can print and scan without a problem. I will do my best to help! I might be far away but I suspect that there could be a problem with the printhead and it printing black ink. I say this because when you print from your computer, normally the ink colors mix to create a composite black, and when you print copies, it's only the black ink cartridge that is used.

I want you to try a power reset and make sure that the printer is plugged directly into the wall, avoiding bars power and surge protectors. This ensures that the printer is full on.

    Turn on the printer.
With the printer, unplug the power cord at the back of the unit.
Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
    Wait at least 15 seconds.
Plug the power cord into the wall outlet.
Reconnect the power cord to the back of the unit.
If the printer does not by itself, press the Power button to turn it on.

HP Deskjet F2210 printer will not print my documents with the exception of my e-mail address highlighted who is on the document, it is not cartrages, as it will print one page black and multicolor of the internet. Help, please.

If you found problems with print quality with the only printer without printing from the computer, then it is a hardware problem.

You may need to contact HP (1800-474-6836) support. Looks like a print head may be bad or needs to be cleaned manually. I don't think that this printer has a detachable printhead to clean manually.

  • Re: HP Deskjet 710c printer driver will work for 712c printer under Windows 7?

It's very interesting, but my Windows 7 64-bit system does not list any driver printer tor the 710C.  Printer drivers are for the 450, 460, then 5100.  If the 710c driver is not available, including available pilots would argue the DeskJet 712C printer?

The drivers are sent through Windows Update.  Try the following: click Start, devices and printers, add a printer.  When the list of printers, click Windows Update.  Wait a few minutes to fill out the list, and then select HP for the manufacturer and HP Deskjet 710C.  For the x 64 version of Windows 7, you must apply the patch after you install the driver.  [Edit - patch is available here.]

In fact - what HP means without out and say what they deem a legacy device (printer) and even if they included a universal driver (Microsoft put in Windows 7) and it should work without doing you anything else - it is perhaps not fully functional as it was in previous operating systems where they (HP) it supported.

HP in this case is the manufacturer of the equipment and in all related case material - the hardware manufacturer is responsible for the materiel support (drivers, software, etc.)

You can follow the advice of HP, if you want to:

But really what they're trying to say is, "your printer is old - buy a new one from us so that we can stay in business."
