• HP Ultrium 960 tape drive not recognized by ESX 4

  I have loaded ESX 4.1 on my HP DL 585 G2, which has a LSI Logic LSI22320 connected to a Ultrium 960.  ESX does not recognize the drive.  The adapter is available, but the path says 'Dead' where the camera would be when you view the storage adapters in vCenter.  Now if I plug my old Ultrium 460 he sees the current drive with no problems.  I remember testing the 960 on 3.5 and had no problems.  Is there a problem with the 960?

  I installed a 3.5u5 ESXi on a HP ProLiant DL380 G4, dual Xeon 3.2 G and 12 GB of RAM.

  I have a (Smart Array 642) SCSI card to my tape drive unit (HP StorageWorks 960).

  All my gear is on the compatibility list, but I can't get the esxi to see my tape drive.

  I tried the KB (http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?cmd=displayKC & docType = kc & externalId = 1000024 & sliceId = 1 & docTypeID = DT_KB_1_1 & dialogID = 89914880 & stateId = 1% 200% 2089918820).

  The drive is configured correctly on the SCSI card, it appears at the start and I updated the firmware of the tape drive to a Linux compatible with HP Smart Update Firmware.

  Anyone with any ideal about how I can make it work?

  I always learned to NOT to use a tape drive on a RAID controller, at least for SCSI parallel such as you have.  I don't know the exact reasons of techniques, just what is usually recommended.  It seems that the Smart Array controller may not be the best choice.

  My configuration is not exactly the same, but similar.  I have a HP 920 LTO - 3 drive using SCSI Ultra320 connected to a non RAID Adaptec 29320LPE controller.  (29 series single channel East, 320 is UltraSCSI 320, EPA is half-height PCIe).  I've used this with ESX 3.5 and ESX 4.0 currently.  Host is a HP DL385 G5.  Guest operating system is Windows 2008 with Backup Exec 12.5.

  So I did not anything the same as you, but many closely related pieces, which can give you a direction for a suitable alternative SCSI controller, if you can't get your configuration to work.

  Your problem is, the 960 GTX requires UEFI in the motherboard instead of a standard BIOS.  HP didn't start using UEFI until mid-October 2012.  There is no way to upgrade the BIOS in the UEFI.  The last video cards that does not need UEFI are the GT of 640.

  Seems good.

  960 is 9.5 inches in length and requires a power of 400 W.

  Check the clearance in the tower. Measure along the 645 to verify that you can adapt a 9.5 inch to 10-inch card in the case.

  Hard drive cage can be in the way.

  Check that your has a PCIe auxiliary cable as the 960 supply requires six extra pins to connect. The manufacturer will usually provide an adapter if you need. Or you can get one online.

  The problem you are experiencing is caused by the fact that the GTX 960 requires UEFI in the motherboard instead of a standard BIOS.  HP didn't start using UEFI until mid-October 2012.  The last series of video cards that does not need UEFI is the GT 640.

  I suggest you contact the manufacturer of the graphics card for redress.  Maybe they have a NVIDIA GTX 960 with a level lower vios BIOS or maybe they are going to exchange it for a GTX 660.

  Your situation is not unusual as there are a number of positions on this forum where the NVIDIA GTX 9xx series would not work in many old HP PC.  With a few exceptions, the graphic cards of NVIDIA GTX 9xx series would not work in HP PC consumer placed on the market before the 01/10/2012.

• HP Pavilion p6-2104ed: 960 GTX prevents the computer start

  I bought a HP Pavilion p6-2104ed years but wanted to change the GPU. I have moved everything to a new case (Coolermaster 280), updated the standard power supply in a Seasonic 650 W 80 + gold and bought a new GPU (GeForce GTX 2 960).

  The computer works perfectly in the new deal with the old GPU (Radeon HD 7550) but does not start with the GPU nw.

  -J' I connect the GPU with a cable PCI for power and its lights and the fans turn on.

  -There should be enough power to run all (650W).
